      She's just annoying and self-centered, and starts to throw a tantrum whenever things don't go her way. It has nothing to do with gender. Part of it has to do with being the avatar, which is disastrous to childhood, as was seen with Aang. But that does by no means excuse her behavior entirely, it just explains it partly.

    I've seen people complain about Korra trusting Unalaq so easily, but don't forget that he's her literal UNCLE. Why wouldn't she trust him? He is her family. And between choosing to keep learning airbending(that she already can use at decent level) and saving people of Homeland, I also would choose my Homeland. That is her tribe, her people that are at danger. We saw that people are literally dying because of the attacks. So I absolutely understand her choices.

    • @Celeborn93
      @Celeborn93 2 месяца назад +2

      Blood relations don't mean the same thing to everyone. Family is (to me) something you create yourself, not something you're born with. Trust has to be earned.
      Besides, the northern and southern tribes aren't unified at all, and there is a clear division showcasing how they culturally distinctive they are.
      It makes perfect sense that Korra is worried for her own family and tribesmen, but her instant trust in Unalaq as a mentor, is a big misjudgment.
      It's a perfectly fine flaw for her character to have and grow from. But i would never agree with her choice to cast everything else aside like she does. It's just poor judgement.

      @@johanluisrivas8016 Those weren't necessarily her instincts guiding her decision, as much as it was her frustration and anger. Which is why her judgement is skewed.
      The end doesn't always justify the means, and while her choice was entirely hers to make, and her growing from the mistakes that came with it, still don't mean that her approach was justified, or necessarily the right, or most healthy one.
      She acted and made her decisions almost purely out of frustration and spite, and she is right to feel these things, but she shouldn't act upon it the way she did. She shouldn't trust Unalaq so easily, when he has not earned it. A choice she herself regrets, and not just because he turned out to have ulterior motives, but because it was actively going against those close to her, who's guidance she depends on.
      If you honestly think that her decision was overall good, idk what to tell you. You don't justify behavior based on retroactive success.

On him as an individual?? clearly, which is why she tried to correct it but you making it seem like there was no purpose to why she even chose to study with him which is to LEARN SPIRITBENDING TO KEEP INNOCENT PEOPLE FROM DYING AT THE HANDS OF SPIRITS!!!! Plus harmonic convergence was almost near. Not having that skill would be detrimental. Also not to mention tonraq and tenzin were useless against the spirits. It's the Nickelodeon exec's fault the story line isn't as cohesive as Aang's. They didn't believe that fans would like a female avatar so they only allowed one season. Then when fans proved them wrong they allowed another. The writers weren't allowed to have a well thought out 3 season long story. They shot themselves and the creators in the foot but with the restrictions the creators had, they did an amazing job

      @@fantasyland3646While he’s not fully excused we have to keep in mind Aang’s age was cut short due to being in an iceberg for so long. He didn’t know how long he would be around so he had to make sure that his one airbending son was fully prepared to carry the weight of an entire culture on his shoulders. While yes, Kya and Bumi could have helped in keeping traditions and such alive, Tenzin was the only airbender and thus was integral to the nomads’s future now that they’re all gone.
      To reiterate, Aang wasn’t perfect, but he did his best in a pressure filled moment in time where if he randomly kicked the bucket the culture he fought to keep alive back in ATLA dies with him. This is why he didn’t kill Ozai, it’s not that he’s a pacifist, it’s that his people were pacifists and if he killed Ozai his culture dies no matter what the stakes were, and impossible moral dilemma. Tenzin is all that was left and Aang had to be SURE Tenzin could take up the mantle after he died.

      @@itsturniptime3699 But one also has to keep in mind that since Aang was a child when he was separated from the Nomads, his life as an Avatar cross contaminated his image of Nomads. He raised Tenzin to be the next Avatar, and that's why the new Air Nation, also taught by Tenzin, act in an Avatar way, travelling the world to help people. Real nomads minded their own business and dedicated their lives to personal enlightenment. But they also didn't willy nilly go to the spirit world- Aang was a master at 12 yet never went as part of his training. So all his life Tenzin felt shame over not being able to do an Avatar thing that only very spiritual people like Iroh and Jinora managed otherwise, irrelevant to their bending. Aang failed at carrying over the Air Nomad culture. Actually anything that was saved, was thanks to the Air Acolytes from the comics who become nuns and monks to the temples in this series- even though Aang looked down on them as cultural appropriators. They saved the sky bisons. They practiced the daily lifestyle. Aang just played Avatar with his favourite child.

    • @jademuseplays
      @jademuseplays 2 месяца назад +4

      Additionaly, Aang had to overcome the reality that his entire civilization was killed and move on from that fact. Much like Amon/Noatak, Aang must have treated his son being an airbender as hope when he thought all was lost. And, like a child in that regard, protected, celebrated, and gave special attention to Tenzin once he had developed his abilities. Aang was a father, blinded by hope of fulfilling a dream long forgotten, opening old wounds and causing emotional changes that altered his vision of what he was actually doing.

  • @Oiyuki
    @Oiyuki 2 месяца назад +62

    Aang being not the best dad makes me sad but also feels correct. Aaron nomads didn’t have parents they were raised in monasteries by elders and teachers. So he would have no idea how to be a parent the closest he had was Gyatso, who seemed more like a fun, uncle, or grandpa than a dad. Not to mention the pressure and duties of being the avatar, and desperately trying to teach enough air, acolytes the culture of the nomads so that that’s not lost well also, teaching his only air, bending their arts and ways so that the skills are not lost. It’s a lot of work and I’m not surprised he accidentally (because I don’t think it was intentional.) ended up sort of ignoring his other children, and perhaps even his wife to a certain extent.

      @demo2823 2 месяца назад +3

      But the thing is, the air nomad culture is almost entirely upheld by the air acolytes who are nonbenders, and independently from Aang restored the culture. Tenzin misunderstands his own culture because it is polluted by Aang's idea of an avatar. He thinks he's supposed to be able to go to the spirit world when Aang was a master at 12 and had never. He thinks the new air nation needs to travel the world and save people. If Aang wanted to pass down legitimate air nomad culture, he could have passed it down to all his children, because it didn't matter if they couldn't bend air- the acolytes were doing it. Aang picked a favourite child and taught them how to be the Avatar.

    While Korra can have some frustrating choices or actions this season, they are very understandable
    She’s been sheltered for most of her life, lived through a very traumatic experience and realizes some of the people she trusted most have lied to her for years
    Add to that the stress of being the avatar and her insecurity of not feeling needed by the world

    While Korra is definitely moody this season, I completely understand her being upset throughout a lot of it. Everyone has sheltered and kept things hidden from her, and with them coming to light like her not being locked up by Tenzin and her own father it makes sense that her whole perception of who she can trust becomes warped. I also think that Unalaq at this first section of the season actually raises some very valid points, and I do think that she probably was going to get more out of learning from him than Tenzin, though she definitely could have ended her mentorship with him in a much less harsh way. Also, it's not like Unalaq is some random dude, it's her uncle, so it's not unreasonable for her to have some level of trust in him even though they don't know each other that well.

You don't automatically see the worst in your family just because someone else in your family may not like the other. You make it seem like he's a stranger to her, which he isn't. She most likely saw Unalaq way more than Tenzin in her life up until that point. You're bringing up tenzin fighting for her in the first season when they were in an unavoidable conflict so he was gonna fight regardless. Just like with this situation the only thing different is Unalaq's intentions weren't genuine. Plus, he had the skill set she needed that was beneficial for the current situation they were in, especially for the future going forward, while the same tenzin and tonraq couldn't even combat against the spirits. I personally loved how realistic Aang is as a father and how relatable the sibling relationship is. I believe Aang loved all his children, but he wasn’t perfect. Yes, sharing everything with his children equally hurt them, but that wasn’t intentional. He likely chose those trips to be just the two of them so he could focus on sharing with Tenzin the importance of the culture he was now apart of and had the responsibility to lead one day.

    Let's be real, Unalaq is an asshole, but he's not wrong when it comes to the avatar's journey with the spirits. This southern spiritual knowledge he had was something actually lost in Avatar lore, even in the Yangchen books Kuruk is kind of surprised to know that such knowledge was possible. So having Korra learn all these spiritual aspects of each element/nation is very timely.

    I’m a big Korra defender. She’s very misguided at the beginning of this season, and moody and bratty as hell, but I really like flawed characters. Yes, it’s frustrating to see her act that way, but it’s understandable. People seem to forget Aang’s moments of lashing out unfairly at others. He was raised by MONKS. Yet, he wasn’t always perfect or completely in control of his emotions. Narrative-wise, this season is weaker than the rest, but it’s not as bad as people say. Thank you for sharing your reactions, as always! ❤

    I feel like the set-up of how we meet Unalaq is a little bit rushed and it's made extremely obvious to the audience not to trust him. But when you try to see what Korra sees, I can understand what she's thinking. It is absolutely wrong for her father and Tenzin to keep her contained - it's how she grew up, super sheltered, having to ask for permission to leave. And I really don't think it's good for avatar development. Aang was a great avatar and I think that a lot of that can be attributed to him seeing so much of the world so young, even before team avatar. It made him open-minded to different struggles and I think it contributed to his spirituality as well.
    While I don't think it's a good idea for Korra to disregard her previous mentors completely, I also think that they should see what she's saying and support her in wanting to get a diverse education and see more of the world.

      Mmm while it’s totally understandable that he ended up not being the best parent, it would have been perfectly normal if he became a good parent as well considering we only ever saw 1 year of his entire childhood and the fact he was raised by monks.

    • @TheFireMonkey
      @TheFireMonkey 2 месяца назад

      @@thecocoacouch True, we only saw 1 year, but I didn't get the impression that he was going to settle down with some sort of foster parents after that. As for being raised by monks - I'm not sure that helps much in terms of preparing you for a normal family situation. I've spent some times around both Buddhist monks and Catholic monks, and while they may be great at teaching you about spiritual matters and such, none of them seemed to have much of an idea about normal parenting. They are more like a boarding school approach where no one individual takes on the role of a parent, rather it is a group effort. So I don't think he would have learned how to be a good parent from that.
      I'm not saying he was destined to be a "bad" parent, just that he didn't really learn much about parenting at all - at least based on what we saw and what has been implied. I don't really think he WAS a bad parent, just not a great one. The only mistake we know of was that he was busy with his duties rather than his kids, and since he saw one of those duties being to bring back the air nation, and he only had one air bender child.... well, it does not seem surprising he might not have done as good a job as a parent.

    I loved your reaction in ATLA. But I am shocked to see some of the patterns a lot of (especially male) reactors have here. She is moody in these Episodes, yes. But she wants Makko to support her the first time they had an argument (she didn't ask his opinion the first time she just told him a story) and when she asked him something (2nd argument) she asked for his genuin opinion because she was lost and he was like "do what you want" (again in HER perspective).
    The uncle is the only one who supports her at this moment (she just found out that per parents lie to her and her BF does not support her in HER view). The thing with Korra is that all she wants to be is the Avatar. Her Ego and her selfworth is connected to it. And when someone does believes in her it is her weak point.
    I agree that she needs to grow and act less impulsive :)

    What's hard about this season for me is the constant childish responses from these teenagers. Korra didn't show any semblance of these trust issues in the first season, she's just jarringly antagonistic to everyone in this season, and Mako more than anyone.
    The other hard part is this season starts with an 'Everybody Sucks' structure. What Unalaq tries to tell the southern tribe is correct but it's not helpful. They have become detached spiritually, but if they just jump right back into it, they're going to be even more divided as a nation. And his motives are so terrible, he's obviously not the person that they need to be leading them to spiritual betterment. He's correct in that they need better, but he's wrong thinking he is the solution. And that's true in the case of Tenzin, Bumi and Kaya, of Korra and Tonraq, even of Mako, Asami and Bolin. Everywhere there is a divide in the start of season 2, it's a split between bad choice and bad choice, not right and wrong. That's a lot of the reason the conflict feels so empty at the start of this season

    All I'm going to say right now is, to me, they got the aspect of flaws wrong here. Flaws are supposed to extenuate traits that you have in a manner that goes too far.
    And in my opinion, him favoring one kid who happens to be an Airbender, isn't a trait Aang had.
    When he was younger, he had an excitement about teaching others his culture. He even grew to love and accept a group of people he once thought was ruining an air temple.
    Why would he not extend that to his kids? Aang created the Air acolytes. Nomads who were not air benders but who wanted to know the culture. Why were Kya and Bumi not the first acolytes?
    I'm all for humanizing Aang but in my opinion, a better way to have done it would have been if he had put too much pressure on all his kids OR
    if he had a hard time balancing protecting the world and Republic City and so ALL his kids "felt" sort of neglected.
    I just feel like taking a spirit that was so excited about spreading his culture and framing him this way was a misstep.

    27:58 Korra's situation was a little different from Aang's. The northern and southern water tribes are legally one tribe. Unalaq is the leader of both tribes. Legally, he can take northern soldiers south and take control. When Unalaq says that Korra should be neutral in this conflict, it is meant to be understood on that basis.

    • @thecocoacouch
      @thecocoacouch  2 месяца назад +1

      Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t he saying that in a manipulative way to make her more passive in the conflict? Like regardless of whether or not the south is independent, they’re being oppressed and he’s telling Korra to stand down essentially rather than helping those being treated poorly. 🤷‍♂️

    • @akosvarga7881
      @akosvarga7881 2 месяца назад +2

      @@thecocoacouch He absolutely said it to manipulate Korra but the reason Korra also thinks she should remain neutral is because Unalaq is the leader and everything he does he has every right to do legally.
      Imagine a little bit like if in your country the army rebelled against the leaders and a civil war broke out. If you (as someone with a lot of power) take sides instead of trying to be an independent mediator between the two sides, you will only inflame tensions and your own countrymen will end up killing each other.

    • @thecocoacouch
      @thecocoacouch  2 месяца назад

      Oh right yeah i see, i guess my point is though that the Avatar, as much as they should TRY to be neutral, it’s isn’t their sole job, the Avatar needs to maintain peace, but when things become one-sided like when Sozin took over or when Unalaq took over (granted he has the right) the Avatar needs to step in and make changes and sometimes even by force like Roku and Aang had to. So while I understand she needs to be neutral in a political way, she can’t be neutral when one side or one leader is oppressing the other. It’s almost like the technicality of being neutral and your explanation is what he’s using to keep her down 😆

    • @akosvarga7881
      @akosvarga7881 2 месяца назад +2

      @@thecocoacouch You are right that when someone is oppressed, the Avatar has to interfere, even by force. In the case of Roku and Aang, an independent country was attacking another independent country, so they interfere. But the point here is that it is an internal conflict of a nation where the leader and (some of) the people within it are in political conflict. Just to give you an example, Aang didn't interfene in the fact that women in the northern water tribe had less rights than men but In this case too, people were oppressed (unfortunately I can't think of a better example. There wasn't much political intrigue in ATLA😅)
