Thank you for another superb comparison video. I preferred the result of the Brutfuner pencils but, sadly, had already purchased the Castle Art set because I absolutely fell in love with the tin's artwork! (Madness runs both sides of "the pond" obviously!!). Thank you for the entertainment and knowledge you bring to us. Best wishes (and Happy Christmas) - Marion in the UK.
I bought the brutfuner pastels before I even got the square 120s. I absolutely love them. I always lean towards a harder, oil based lead though. The shades are phenomenal and have helped me create some beautiful artwork. I honestly not much of a wax based fan except for prismacolors and regular Castle Arts. I'm on the fence about whether or not I need more pastel pencils. They don't look bad at all I just prefer the shades and consistency of the Brutfuners Edit: little over 1 month from time of initial comment I purchased the Castle Arts ones and I love them as well. I like the shades of Brutfuner better but that's just bring nit picky. I have been trying to make a concentrated effort to use wax based pencils more. It's REALLY nice to have a great set of pastel tints in wax and oil based. Both sets have a large selection of colors and I love both of them. I do not regret buying both. I got the brutfuners for like 17$ on Aliexpress and only 34 for the pasteltints in the tin because I had room in a zippered pencil case. It's still a HUGE savings when compared to Holbein. 🤷♀️
I purchased the Brutfuner Macarons a couple of months ago and did a swatch chart. Now when listening to your comparison with Castle Arts Pasteltint pencils, I realized that my Brutfuner set has different colors compared to what you got. 😮 The packaging was the same as yours.
Lovely comparison--thank you. I used the Castle Arts Pasteltints on a Botanicum page, and they seemed almost a bit chalky. I ended up switching to some Black Widows Dragons, just for some colors, and they blended beautifully together. It really does have something to do with the paper. Avoid the Castle Arts Pasteltints in Botanicum, because of the chalkiness and how fast those pencils needed sharpening.
thanks once again Pamela! Great video. I have both sets and I like the Brutfuner Macarons better because of the softer feel of them. However, I find they are closer in color families when you do the swatches on the same paper. Also, you might mention that the Brutfuner Macaron's colors are exactly the same name and number as the Holbeins. They don't feel exactly the same, but hey you can save $130.00!!
Thank you for the demo Pamela. I've got the castlearts pasteltint and think they are lovely and compliment the other pencils in the range, not ventured into Brutfuner pencils, keep well 💖
Thank you for another great video! I'm leaning towards the Brutfuners, because I have the 72 squares, and I love them. But what I'm wondering is if the Macarons are included in the huge 520 set of Brutfuners?
Thanks for the review! I bought the Pasteltints when they came out - also initially because the tin was so beautiful 🤩 I prefer a harder pencil and I know now that I got the set that is right for me.
I received my Castle Art Pasteltint pencils, yesterday. As I color swatched them, to my eye, they seemed to very naturally fall into 2 and 3 pencil color combinations (light/dark and light/medium/dark). I intend to use these to augment other pencils, but I did notice this, and arranged them accordingly.
As of today, August 24, 2022, Amazon has the Castle Art 48 piece pasteltint in the decorated tin, in stock for a price of $34.99 I have both of these sets of pencils and love the colors and quality of them both. thank you for a great review
Because I have the Brutfuner square pencils, I purchased the Brutfuner macarons and I love them. I also purchased the Arteza ones just to complete my set of 120 pencils. I always thought the Arteza pencils didn’t include enough actual pastels in their sets. Really, they are not bad either.
Thank you for this comparison. I have the Macaron 50 set and have been on the fence about the pasteltint set. I will definitely be purchasing them but will wait for the tin to be available again. I might also order a second set of the Macaron set since my set has 3 that are off center which makes them very difficult to sharpen in fact one of them can only be sharpened extremely carefully with my little silver Kum sharpener. I lost about 1/3 of that one and about 1/4 of the other 2. I was also wondering where the 2 sets are swatched on 2 different papers if that would make a difference in the depth of color?
It seemed like the undertones on the Brutfunner set on the blend seemed closer. 🤔 But the type of pencil makes big difference. 👍 I'm not sure which set i would go with. I can definitely see the benefit of all the highlight options!!💖
Enabler!!!!!!!! You’re awesome I’ve never gone wrong with your suggestions dahlin keep up the great work and thank you for your time and effort to make the videos!!!!!!!!
I just noticed that they must have changed the Brutfuner Macaron Selection: I bought my 50 set a month ago (September 2022) and don't have the color "1430 Wisteria"! ...What I do have is 440 Violet Storm.
it could be that they just changed the color names. there is a new 72 macaron set, which seems to have changed color names or new colours. in it you can find those changed colors from the 50 set also. 26 out of the 72 have still the old color names and numbers from the 50 set.
Same for my set. I bought it in January 2023 and I don’t have the same colors and I think it is not only the names that are different. Can’t say for sure though. 😅
Thank you for this wonderful review! I purchased the macaron pencils and was wondering if it was worth getting the castel arts ones as well given both sets have some different colors. Now I feel much better about spending that extra money to get the perfect pastel set!
If you do decide to purchase the castle arts as well, you will definitely have different colors. I have seen some people comment that they are purchasing both sets and actually putting them together. Some of the colors are very similar and a couple are exact, but you also get unique colors in each set. After quite a bit of testing with both of these, I have found that both of them work differently in different coloring books as well.
Don’t want to sound rude but why do you use the Dahle that way? When I use it I use my right hand to turn the handle away from me, I find it easier as I did try it the other way. Just wondering because maybe there is a good reason why you do.
I just got the Restly pastel colors that are the same as the Brunette but with a black case & it came wit ha free coloring book, BUT the pics in it are copyrighted I did a video just on the book that came with it showing that its all stolen, & I got a hold of the artists too.
I would say seeing you color with the original Castle Art set, along with their Pasteltint together would be nice 😊 Same thing with Brutfuner, using the original square Brutfuner set along with their Pastel set together 💕
Also, thank you so much for this super in depth comparison!! As always, your content is SO very helpful, useful, and not to mention very calming to listen to 😊 Much love 💞
Also again (lol), I so didn't think that Brutfuner midtone and light tone would vibe together, but wow! They really did blend beautifully together! I'm really beginning to understand the hype around the Brutfuner's (square set) and now especially this Macaron set 😍 The Pasteltints look gorgeous too but man, the blending of the Brut's is exactly what I look for especially to pair with my Prisma's!
Yes! The blending capabilities of the Brutfuner Macaron is amazing! Check out my most recent video posted today where I colored a flower with them. I put very different colors together and it really "popped"!
@@PamelasPassionforPencils Watched and saved it 💕💕 SO gorgeous!!! And as always, I often come back to your videos when I'm stuck in a rut, and always learn from your coloring style that I need to chill with being so heavy handed, because all that's doing is limiting myself (and limiting the tooth of my paper)! 😅
Other reviews that I’ve seen have called that B1228 Ice Green also and there is a B1127 spelled Gream but they called it Cream. I also ended up with 4 that don’t seem to fit anyone else’s charts. They are Green Flash B0112, Violet Storm B0440, Raspberry Rose B0678, and Salomn (yes, that’s how it’s spelt!) B0719. I am missing the Lettuce Green, Wisteria, Fuchsia, and Coral. But the extra ones that I got just about match those colours, so I’m happy.
there is a 72 set now, but there isn't any review for it yet. the 72 macaron set includes those new colours you mentioned. it could be that they just changed the names of the colours. not sure.
As I mentioned in the video, it is sold out at the moment. The other option is to purchase the set in the black case. You can always wait for it to come back in stock. It is out of stock on their website as well as Amazon.

Hi Pamela! How would ordering a pastel set benefit me? Do you think I could colour an entire page just using a pastel set?I'm leaning toward the Brutfuner because I have the 120 set and you mentioned that the Brutfuner pastel set has some deeper colours to help the colours pop off the page. Been practicing my line art. Just ordered the new book from Lulu Mayo which has tons of small cute images to colour and practice on. I think the pastel pencils would be great to work with in that book. The title is something like A Million sweet Kawaii Images. I'm also a bit confused about pastel pencil kits since Prisma and Brutfuner appear to have some in their regular sets are the pastel sets that different? What is the difference? Thanks Pamela. :)
You can get plenty of lighter colors and pastel shades in your more expensive sets of pencils like your Prismacolors or even Polychromos. A lot of these sets are fun sets to have. You have all the pastel colors all in one place. A lot of my subscribers are collectors and love colored pencils and feel like they need to have them all, which is okay. If you think you want a full set of pastels then, by all means, get them. But, just know that you can go to your other sets and pull together pastel colors too.
@@PamelasPassionforPencils Thanks Pamela, that is good advice. I thought that there were lots of pastel colours in the pencils I had. I do however find that the two Black Widow Portrait sets have been invaluable in helping me to experiment with skin colour.
The castle art ones are overpriced, overrated and cheaply made. I'll wait and see what the brutfuners are like. The castle art pastel tin is on the UK Amazon right now!!
I don’t find the cheaply made at all. I’ve enjoyed using them. Yes I paid for them because I really wanted a pastel set of colored pencils. They were the first set I purchased. I purchased the Brutfuner Macarons also.
I agree with you! Im in Australia and the castle art pastel set is $100! I just ordered the Brutfuner macarons for $27. I ordered the castle art 150 set and they are terrible! The leads are misaligned etc I have the Holbein pastel set so I really just wanted to check these out
