And then Ebert says, "Lucas says he eventually hopes to make 6 more Star Wars movies and based on what he's done so far, I sure do hope that he does."...the irony is tremendous...Siskel's lucky he didn't live to see the Phantom Menace

    I like how they mention luke growing up . That's how u do a character arc. He started off a whiny naive farm boy. Then he starts off in esb full of gusto & confidence but gets smacked down hard by the end. The 3rd one he really is a badass. I just loved the arc that he fails & it's all part if the maturation process. Unlike mary sue she faces no adversity & right away beats main antagonist. She suffers no trials & tribulations. Even though I didnt like the prequels at least it had original new planets characters & is original. I hated the latest trilogy bc of the Mary sue thing but characters like finn & poe are wasted. All jj does in the 2 films he made were all retreads & his dumb mystery box. Zero respect given to the main 3 from the originals.

    • @jedijones
      @jedijones 3 года назад

      It's true. And don't overlook what Siskel said about the characters becoming friends to us. I believe we feel that way because we got to see those characters become friends to each other. In the beginning all Han, Luke, Leia, 3PO and R2 did is argue and annoy each other. But by the end they had truly become friends through their shared experiences. In the sequel trilogy, they decided to write Mary Sue Rey as an uber-independent woman, a fish that doesn't need a bicycle. She doesn't need any help from anyone, so she doesn't need to make any friends. She can go off on adventures all by herself and beat the bad guys on her own. She couldn't possibly be shown to need to be rescued by anyone because then she'd be a "damsel in distress." But it wasn't just Leia who needed to be rescued from the Death Star. Luke needed to be rescued from Cloud City. Han needed to be rescued from Jabba. This develops the characters. We can identify with a character who is in trouble and needs help. And we can like a character who is willing to help their friend. So finally Rey ends her trilogy as she begins, as a cold, independent loner who hasn't made an emotional connection to anyone. How are we supposed to care about a character like that?

    • @natalieps2387
      @natalieps2387 3 года назад +1

      @@jedijones excellent analysis of rey & yes we felt like the characters in the original trilogy were our friends. That's why it was called a " space opera" as well. Like a soap opera the characters became the fans friends. Like anyone you felt like turning on the tv their was comfort in seeing a character still there 5 or 10 yrs later. A film analysis of star wars ( not sure if it was rlm or another popular site ) made a good point to show where Rey's arc in the 2nd film & Luke's arc in empire were at the same time. Rey comes in flying I think the falcon & was blowing away the first order with a " joke " " I like this " where at the same time luke had his hand chopped off was told the baddest baddie in the galaxy who had his uncle & aunt murdered & killed ben , his mentor & was told killed his "dad ", anakin that he was his father ! One of the biggest twists in movie history plus he basically tries to commit suicide by letting himself fall instead of joining vader & he is rescued by leia when the garbage chute opens. So u have rey just continuing to kick ass & luke at his worst point in his life. Also luke fighting Vader was done to perfection. I dont know if people at the time already knew their would be a third I'm guessing so bc the ending of esb in no way looks like an end. Anyway luke is warned by ben & Yoda that it's a very dangerous time for him to go face Vader & save his friends. By this point luke has friends he cares about. Unlike rey who I guess we are told she is friends with people . Anyway luke is still young immature & his friends mean everything to him despite yoda saying he will sacrifice all that his friends have been fighting for. Luke says " but let han & leia die "& yoda pauses carefully thinking a moment & says yes. That luke is their last hope & like a warrior he must make sacrifices for the bigger picture. Of course Luke being a worthy hero does not care, he values these freinds too much to care about the Long term.
      So on to the long anticipated battle where luke had a small victory against vader in blowing up the death star but he did it with help from han & chewy. Han came back to help get Vader off his back literally ( another character development for han who when we met him was a selfish smuggler who only cared about himself & his debt to jabba. This move & staying with the rebellion cost han big time in esb see great storytelling that's character driven not plot driven. Han has taken a liking to luke & came back bc of his growing attachment for the kid. That's why it's such a great moment. Anyway when luke takes on Vader; a man with a lot more esp experience & power than Luke has. Vader knows this is his son & does not want him to die. He wants to turn him to his side . Nit just bc this is his son who he thought was dead but bc he inherited the force from his dad. So u see Vader us holding back a lot & really just toying with luke. When he finally has enough he just stands there & forces objects to bang into luke. Now luke is no slouch. When vader pushes him into the carbonite freezing & says " all too easy " it was a great move ti have luke exceed Vader's expectations & force jump out of the chamber. Thus impresses Vader & proves to him luke is no punk. I think he says " impressive obi wan has taught u well " then vader gets really serious & chops his own sons hand off. Luke is defeated tired sweating. Finally vader tells him he needs to hein him & if he only knew hed power he would have as a sith is beyond his comprehension. He finally plays his last card which accomplishes 2 things. He tells Luke he is his father which will immediately give luke a conflict & he knows obi wan obviously did not tell luke he was his dad bc luke is not saying it. So it also accomplishes making a liar out if Luke's mentor. Basically luke is screwed up from this duel from his head to his body. That's why esb is such a masterpiece.
      How about landos arc. He betrays han & co. But u can understand in a way his reasoning. The empire got to him & threatened cloud city & all its inhabitants. Lando basically was forced to betray han bc if he didnt it meant his life his city & all the people who lived there. Its not black & white. We also see how Vader plays dirty bc he keeps altering the deal he made. Lando feels incredible guilt when he sees what they did to his friend. He also had a heart bc he said to Vader who he made a deal with that leia & chewbacca would be left alone under his protection & after vader said to take captive of them. So lando warns han & leia that they are not even wanted by Vader they are just bait. He also saves chewy Leia & 3po & has his guards turn on the empire guards. He helps then all escape leaving behind his city & livelihood to make good on what happened to han. Again I like that Landos betrayal was not black & white essentially he had no choice. We also learn lando han leia are all just pawns that happen to be just collateral damage to Vader. They are the patsies for the prize - luke. We now have a handle on these characters who were introduced in the first one & fleshed out in empire. It's so well done. Lando then is a huge part of defeating the empire. All the lead good guys did their part to help the cause. Han & leia get the shield Down. Luke selflessly gives himself up bc Vader can read Luke thoughts so he left to stop inadvertently endangering the mission. Luke totally rejects the emperor trying his best to turn luke like he did to his dad. This essentially winds up destroying the two leaders if the empire. Even though u was 3 , we went to see jedi as my older 5 year old brother went to. I distinctly remember the crowd in its feet cheering when Vader picks up the emperor & tosses him into a mine shaft. Of course the last film just screws up the first 6 films. Anakin by way of the prophesy does indeed destroy the rule that their are always 2 sith. Vader kills the emperor & bc of the lightning hitting vafer kills him as well. So Vader even though it took many years fulfilled that prophesy. So the last film rise of Skywalker just destroyed that by palpatine being alive & stupidly his being Rey's grandad. What -??? Just desperate.to have a big twist. Vader revealed being Luke's father was a brilliant twist compared to the contrived desperate twist palps is her grandad. Just pathetic.
