Modifying my Jeep Renegade to fit NEW LARGER WHEELS

  • I purchased a set of 17" Jeep Cherokee wheels/tires to replace and upgrade my Renegade. Like most everything else with this car, there was modification needed. The wheels didn't fit! Nothing an angle grinder and some work can't fix. Let me know what you think!

    I would've put a spacer on before grinding the caliper

    • @JrsGasolineAlley
      @JrsGasolineAlley  7 лет назад +3

      Thought about it, but to get a true hub centric spacer that is safe would involve 20mm+ with, increased wear on the wheel bearings, and the negative effects of changing the inflection point of the suspension (ie bumpsteer)

      @derekhartman9047 7 лет назад +2

      JeepRenegadeGuy true but they do make small 5mm spacers that would've been perfect for that.

      Stay away from spacer a little grinding didn't hurt anything.

    Stock wheels are actually 16x6.5 not 16x6. And I'm not sure if you understand how offset works, as you didn't really talk about it I the video, but you may have realized that this interference problem would happen before you even bought the wheels - if you knew the wheels were 17x7 +41, as that size will sit 7.3mm closer to the brakes/suspension than the stock 16x6.5 +40. A 25mm hubcentric spacer would have solved this and it would make the rims flush with the fender also. I understand you not wanting to put additional strain on the wheel bearings, but that additional strain wouldn't be much since the tires are now also wider and help to spread the load towards the center under the jeep by a little more than 7.3mm, let's call it 9mm as I'm estimating your tires contact patch to be about 2mm bulging out past the rim width... so really a 25mm spacer would be spacing out the inner track by 16mm on each side, which isn't much at all.
    On my Renegade I have 235/60/17 tires on 17x8 +44 wheels with 15mm hubcentric spacers so I'm running 17x8 +29 effectively. But I am actually putting less strain on my bearings since even with the spacers my tires are sitting an extra 8mm under the Jeep than they were before, and instead of focusing on keeping the tires the same overall diameter, I focused on keeping them light and close to the same overall weight, so my wheels and tires (50 lbs) only weigh 8 lbs more per corner than the stock 16" wheels and 215/65 tires (42 lbs).

      The factory wheels are indeed 16x6.5 (Show that in the video), and the offsets are actually -40mm. Negative, not positive. So going to the 17x7 with a -41mm offset that makes the wheel go 7mm closer to the strut and 5mm further to the fender. This was important because the wheel remains essentially centered on the hub.
      If I were to do a 25mm spacer it would essentially make the new wheels a negative -16mm offset. Moving the wheel to be 18mm further from the strut and 30mm closer to the fender. That is a significant change as 39mm is an inch.

      Just some additional info/corrections:
      The Renegade's offset is positive (+40mm in the case of the 16x6.5's), meaning the mounting surface is 40mm outward from the center line of the wheel, and giving a backspace of about 129mm or 4.8 inches. That is indicated by no defined "lip" on the wheels.
      The offset has no real indication on whether or not the spokes will clear the calipers. This is determined by the "pad height" which is the spacing from the mounting surface (rotor/hub) to the rear of the wheel face/spokes. A quick google search of the term "Wheel Pad Height" has some helpful images, although this info isn't really available or commonly discussed when dealing with basic wheel swaps. With that being said, there's no real way of knowing the 17x7 +41 would not clear the calipers without test fitting.
      I'm currently running a set of 20x12's with a -75 offset and a medium pad height, and clear the Renegade's calipers with no issues. Yes, the wheel specs are a bit ridiculous, but just shows that offset doesn't effect caliper clearance per se.
      Again, just some helpful info for ya

    First, we have the same trim level. I like what you're doing. Yes, I would have considered a spacer, but it makes me consider just painting the rim too. I love the all black look.

      Use of wheel spacers in Massachusetts is illegal (Makes it hard to get the car inspected) as well as it presents added wear on your wheel bearings.

    They make heavy duty wheel spacers. If your caliper somehow got loose it could possibly still hit the wheel.

    • @JrsGasolineAlley
      @JrsGasolineAlley  6 лет назад

      I could be crazy but if my caliper gets loose I am in trouble no matter the whee/spacer combo.

  • @keithhodge395
    @keithhodge395 7 лет назад +1

    Fine and all that but when wheel bearing starts wearing it still may hit wheel I put the BFG KO2 225/65-17 on my renegade works out kinda nice white and black do go together great on that Jeep

    • @JrsGasolineAlley
      @JrsGasolineAlley  7 лет назад +1

      The wheel bearings would be in real trouble if they were allowing 3mm of play at the hub. LIkely if it had that much movement the wheel would have fallen off already.

      @frankgonzalez9185 5 лет назад

  • @sat20387
    @sat20387 3 года назад

    That's a caliper BRACKET not the caliper itself and by trial and error I would have used washers to determine the minimum space needed to not hit the rim and bought a good pair of hubcentric spacers.

    Check your inside tire sidewall for any contact with wheels turned tight.

    • @JrsGasolineAlley
      @JrsGasolineAlley  6 лет назад

      Didn't rub. Offsets and such were all correct. The hub to spoke transition is where the issue was. Only a few mm though.

  • @zaitcev0
    @zaitcev0 6 лет назад

    I'm surprised this is possible, because on cars I'm familiar with, the caliper is attached so that it can float. Having this little clearance would still risk the caliber to contact the wheel, e.g. when braking in a turn, or after installing new pads.

    • @JrsGasolineAlley
      @JrsGasolineAlley  6 лет назад +2

      This is a floating caliper. What was ground down was not on the caliper but rather the carrier that holds the caliper. The Caliper is thinner than the carrier in the first case, and when you press the brakes the caliper actually squeezes making it move further away from the wheel.

    The stock tires SUCK!
    They only lasted me 26,000.
    I just bought a set of 4 Continental tires with a much better tread rating.
    We'll see how it goes...

    • @JrsGasolineAlley
      @JrsGasolineAlley  6 лет назад +1

      Ideally, I would have. Came across a good deal on some Jeep Cherokee wheels not expecting them to cause any fitment issues.

  • @stewarttallon5798
    @stewarttallon5798 3 года назад

    Mmm. Pretty pointless to be honest. You do know that what you are grinding floats in and out? When braking. And brake pads are thicker when new.

    • @JrsGasolineAlley
      @JrsGasolineAlley  3 года назад

      Not the case. The caliper bracket is fixed and non-floating. The caliper that mounts onto the clamp is floating, but there was not any concern of interference with that part.
