Totally forgot to mention in the video I'm tuned a half step down. And to anyone asking about what guitar I'm using it's an Acacia Cronus :)
Hi Robert, Very cool Video, Is that guitar a barritone or standard scale?
@@Jay-nu1bk Thanks dude and it;s a standard Gibby scale
That riff is one of those that sounds way lower than it is. I did recognize the Cronus because, yeah it's on the wish list
Excuse me.
What is that guitar??
I am playing in D standard (had to tune up my sixth string as I’m usually in drop C(!
Heavy and great fun playing this! I am still learning a lot but I definitely imagine you Robert head banging while playing this w/your friends in your garage! I hope that will possibly be my One year old Boy some day!
I missed out earlier in my life. Now in my early thirties with very low vision I hope to make my own Music. Really though I want to get as far as I can with my guitar playing and learn how to record ‘n’ all of that so if my Son later wants to pursue a passion with Music I will be capable of guiding him along the way! 🤞💪🏻🤘🏻
Is your Son learning guitar?! You mentioned in a older video that your Son liked one of your guitars (forgot which beauties it was) so you told him he can have it if he learns (making sure he sticks with it I’m sure) and that’s why you mentioned you were going to hold on to that guitar.
My memory is random ‘n’ a bit vague/foggy but that instantly came to the front of my mind so my random memory is to blame for my fingers typing so dang much!!
Joyous blessings EVERYONE!!! ☯️
*Do excuse me for such a lengthy comment*
The Riff from We Die Young is also underrated. Heavy as hell
Totally agree! Love that tune! Probably my favorite off Facelift after MIAB got overplayed to death.
OOOOOOOOOOOH
SCARYS ON THE WALL
It's not underrated at all. It's massively successful.
I love We Die Young, but I would've opened Facelift with It Ain't Like That.
Fight me.
Jerry Cantrell is the reason I play guitar. He’s a riff lord. In terms of his underrated riffs, I vote for what the hell have I
Same here
Frogs for me...will go learn what the hell have I later today. Jerry really is a riff lord. His solo work is also amazing.
Besides the best riffage, I discovered G&L guitars because of him. Now I have a custom made Legacy HSS does it all.
He is Undeniably a Riff Master!
One of my faves 😈
I think "Rain When I Die" might be my favorite underrated AIC riff. It has an almost pseudo-psychadelic feel to it, but is unmistakably Cantrell in every way.
Also one of Layne’s best vocal performances.
Same here. That song is incredible
First song of theirs I ever heard, been my favorite band since
The chorus riff is so cool
Mike Starr actually wrote that song and all the riffs. He's extremely underrated as a songwriter
Junkhead is seriously one of the heaviest riffs ever *that wasn't made by Tony Iommi*
That harmony solo too!!!
Kirk Windstein has Tony best for days brotha…
If we’re going there then Matt Pikes got them both while keeping more rhythm than Kirk
2002, Jerry Cantrell plays Manchester Uni, UK. First 6 or 7 songs were all his solo stuff. Someone shouts out 'Play some Alice!' Jerry replies 'You want it? You got it!' and starts this riff up. An hour later he's played nothing but AIC. AND William DuVall's old band were his backing group, with William singing too, a clear 4 years before he joined AIC. Happy, happy times.
That intro riff has always been one of my absolute favorite riffs.
Facelift is one of the best albums ever made in the 1990's. Jerry's crunchy, raw, visceral tone defined the band from the rest of the Seattle sound in a more personal and open way. Thanks for the excellent demo of one of my favorite songs Robert! Keep up the great work!
Died is also an amazing AIC riff
Yes! Awesome song!….I believe Died is the last song LTS did with AIC….
Yup
Chemical Addiction is also very underrated and fairytale love story and killing yourself.
Hell yea I like what the hell have I
Get born again is so fucking dark man. Like eraery and sad and ghost like. Its also underrated
That Up stroke on the E chord has always given me goosebumps. But my favorite riff from Facelift is the verse riff of "Sunshine"
Good name bro! I spell it the same way! I friggin love that up stroke too. It’s crazy though cause I always thought it was Em instead of major. Seemed too dark to be major. What a great heavy tune though. I love when Lane growls his signature “Yeah” preceding that riff! Such a great band!
DUDES!!! I slept on AIC for years, so i’ve had an amazing time listening to their catalog the last 2 years! So much heaviness and brutal riffs all over the place! Jerry really is a riff god!!! 🤘🏼
Jerry is the master of simplicity.
Facelift is my favorite AIC album. Perhaps it was because i was in my early 20’s in Washington state when all of the music scene was popping off, perhaps it was because my band opened for glam AIC way back, but perhaps it was because that album encompasses what it is to live in the pacific NW. rain, flannel, boots, and coffee….
I love the riff in AIC "Put You Down" It has a very GNR Mr. Brownstone vibe to it.
My favorite AIC riff. Wouldn’t you know it, after being a slash fan for 15 years I consider Brownstone to be one of his best riffs
They used to cover a lot of GnR in the clubs so you can hear the influence.
Listen to their old demos like Queen of the rodeo. So much GNR in them
Totally agree. I wish Aliice in Chains would re record the song "Chemical Addiction" Definitely hear the GnR influence
They were once called Alice n chains 😂
the intro riff is Alice in Chains- It Ain’t Like That if anyone’s wondering
Literally the whole video is about it.
WHAAAAAT?
Absolutely! One of the best intro riffs in any hard rock song!
This "Underrated Riffs" section is amazing, keep them coming!
This song is played live (?) in the Cameron Crowe film “Singles” and the song “Would?” Is on the soundtrack. There’s also an earlier scene at the same nightclub with Soundgarden doing the track “Birth Ritual”, Chris Cornell (RIP) also appears on the street at one point (no dialogue, but he helped with the soundtrack) and the fake band in the film has 3 future members of Pearl Jam in it (Eddie Vedder is the drummer).
This movie was ripped off by NBC for the series “Friends” because Crowe was like, “the story is over, why continue it for a TV show?” So they changed names, moved it from Seattle to NYC and tweaked some of the backstories.
Big thumbs up 👍 on this one. JC is a master of manipulating simple chords and getting the most out of them. He rakes, chugs, bends, vibratos, arpeggios, etc then all of a sudden you know it’s a JC riff. He has a signature way of manipulating notes. Very special imho. A lot of Jimmy Page in Jerry Cantrell.
Put You Down is one of my favorites. Pretty much everything on Facelift is great.
Jerry really shows his Iommi influences in this track. Two riff monsters.
Yes, please do a video on the solo for “It Ain’t Like That”
I used to jam out to Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, and Metallica every night at work in the 90's.
“There I was, laid out on a table
Screamin', sweat and bare feet to the floor...”
rock on my brother!!!!!
Jerry s Harry sound
good stuff
Here I sit writing on the paper..trying to think of words you can't ignore!
Cantrell 'The Riff Lord' - love this riff/tune. Used to cover this in a previous band. It's fun and badass! 🤘❤AIC❤ 🤘
Jerry rules! His riffs are amazing and his tone is so good. Facelift is my fav AIC album
Dude what I love about AIC songs is their songs are simple yet so interesting musically
Has Jerry ever written a bad riff to be fair. Interested to know what tuning you were using Robert.
More Alice In Chains for sure 👍
It’s E standard half step down like the majority of AiC stuff
I play to this tune ALL THE TIME when I'm jamming at home, love it. I just finally started working on the solo, love that wah, it's always tricky trying to capture that Jerry dynamic though. Another easy 1 yet probably my favorite and most fun to jam to is We Die Young
Im glad im not the only one who uses his pinky for power chords! It just started happening these past few years, so much more comfortable for me !
Jerry’s Riff’s are pure gold! He’s been an inspiration for years in my playing. This song has ALWAYS been one of my favorites to play. I have a specific guitar set-up (fully modified Squire Bullet Strat w/a Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge) to play AIC songs/riffs only. Every time I sit to play that guitar I still feel that powerful feeling of what all his songs mean to me. 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼
I got the Facelift cassette tape when I was in 8th grade. I got home from San Goody and put it in and push play and before the vocals has started on We Die Young I decided I had to play guitar. Jerry is the reason I play. Love all your videos and your playing Robert so please do more AIC riffs or Cantrell style lessons, long live loud rock
Same here except I would get my cassettes from the Columbia record magazine ads where you get 12 cassettes for 1 cent. There’s was nothing better than getting that many cassettes at one time….😀…..
Great video! Jerry’s guitar work always seems to be so underrated. So many great riffs and solos…”Heaven Beside You” is one the best solos ever…IMO
“What the hell have I ? “ Is a great one too. Underrated .
Absolutely a great underrated riff. All you youngsters need to go watch the movie ‘Singles’. The film came out at the height of Grunge and had a number of Seattle bands in it. Alice In Chains is actually performing this song in a club when the male lead meets Kyra Sedgwick’s character. Matt Dillon and Pearl Jam portrayed a fictional band called Citizen Dick in the movie as well.
I remember that time so fondly great comment. I grew up in Tacoma and Puyallup and traveled to Seattle all the time for concerts at the colosseum.
Don't forget that Chris Cornell made a cameo appearance during the part when Cliff was crankin' up the car stereo outside...until the windows broke! lol
We Die Young is my absolute favorite AIC song 🤘🤘
That whole Album is amazing!
That's awesome - glad when you thought you should make a video about it, you did in fact make a video about. Now here we are watching a video about it
Jerry is probably my favorite guitarist of all time. He is the riff master and does pretty epic solos too.
I'm so happy to see you play that guitar!! It's been so long. I remember when I started watching your channel you were always playing superstrats and less known guitar brands like that Acacia. Not that I don't like your vintage Strat, tele, esquire and LP... But I kind of really miss all your cool guitars
AIC FaceLift what a great dark sounding record .Layne n Jerry were such a great combo. BTW Robert for those who don't know you forgot to mention that it's tuned a half step down to Eb. ROCK ON.🎸
HAVE ALWAYS SAID IT FROM THE START. That pre chorus riff with the harmonies is an all time fave when combined with Sean's drumming
Love facelift. Sunshine, Put you down, I know Something, Sea of Sorrow, the Real Thing - all those riffs are hella catchy.
Get born again is in my opinion the most underrated AiC tune. Shit didn’t even make it onto an album and yet it’s my favourite AiC song.
I learned this riff and song not too long ago. Not necessarily difficult but at the same time, tough but that's what makes it so much fun to play
This is crazy! I just taught this song to my daughter yesterday after listening to it on the ride home from school! Coincidence to some degree but I do think I phone is spying on me for sure.
Please do the solo, I think this is one of my favorite songs ever! I listened to Facelift and Dirt so much when I was a teenager.
That wife laugh... be careful!
surprisingly, that song was my intro to Alice in Chains, glad I listened to an underrated song at first glance of the band
Great player! Great great writer! Great full, thick, heavy, yet CLEAR tone!
I always thought 'We Die Young" was just a killer, as well! 🤘😎🤘
Love this video.
And those little nuance bits you flagged, i found myself doing them when playing this song without thinking about it, just naturally so i think you are right.
Thanks for showing me that low E string bend on the chorus. It definitely sounds more gritty 👍🏽
" I hate those little scratchy noises..." That's why I love this channel - you're a real guitarist. Been playing myself for over 40 years, so I know a real guitarist when I see one.
It’s funny. I’ve always loved the string scratches since I was a kid in the 70’s. It’s the sound of human touch while playing. In fact, there’s a song, “Burnin for You” by Blue Oyster Colt, where it’s very prominent in the recording that I absolutely love. One of the many, many reasons I started playing 40 yrs ago.
Jerry! It Ain't Like That! Nice choice Rob.
Nice! I still find myself playing «what the hell have I» from time to time. Live that riff.
*_"It's not super wrong, but it's not super right."_* That may be the most "2021" thing i've ever heard!
I LOVE the scratchy string noise.
This and Put You Down are my favorite underrated AIC riffs
Robert gushing over Jerry Cantral..... Now I can dig that!
Loooove Jerry, He;s one of my early guitar heros :)
My favourite Alice song in 1991 when I first heard it and it still is today...
Such killer riff, always thought that ever since I´ve heard this song for the first time.
"its not super wrong but it's not super right" 😊 i feel you
I always hated that all the Seattle bands got lumped together as if they sounded the same. Chains was very a very heavy riff driven band. And boy did they have some nasty ones. Love it! Thanks for keeping the great music alive brother.
The riff from Died has to be one of the heaviest riffs ever, if you ever get a chance!
Cool riff! Would love to see Robert go over the solo as well.
Hard to pick a bad AIC riff. So many amazing ones but this one is near the top for me.
If you haven't done the solo yet please do it! You nailed it bro!! Killer tone!
Oof this was so good. I made so many faces during this video lol. Thanks for doing it in a way that conveys that feeling that you get as a guitar player Robert! The energy was palpable
But u have that chugah chugah bite....I went from looking at your led zeppelin vid to this ...my brain is fried 🤯
So awesome... You made me bust out my Alice in chains tunes. I used to love playing these songs.
Dam That River is the best.
Agreed! Put You Down and I Know Something (About You) are other good ones!
Something that I always hear in this song is something like pinch harmonics when he does the upward rake on the E chord. Instead of the thumb you have to get your pointy finger to pull out the harmonic. Maybe I'm hearing things but that's always how Ive played it.
More Jerry! This is one of my favourite Alice tunes, and yes, it's so damn heavy. Thanks for doing this
Thank you for making this video. This is my favorite Alice In Chains song. His best riff.
Never knew this song until I played it in a cover band over a decade ago. Excellent tune.
My favorite Cantrell riff!!
Watched this 4 times in a row. Directional picking?! Loved this one Mr. Baker. When AIC came out, for me, it was like Sabbath reborn. That grimy dirty sound! BTW my wife laughed at the no caffeine riff too.
And we die young- sickest riff off that album. Everybody digs on man in a box; which was sick. But listen to the die young riff- its just spooky good.
Jerry is a genius. Always one of my favorites especially when he was with AIC
He still IS with AIC...lol
@@CS-ru4xd for original of AIC , there was no AIC after Laynes death.
Return of the can opener!
HAHAHA
That cut after the wife remark should have brought in a black eye. Great video and a cool ass guitar.
Haven’t seen that guitar in a while.
Awesome Video Robert. You can see AIC playing this song in the movie Singles! Love this track!
Loved the Cantrell riffage! Also nice props to an underrated master !
Jerry Cantrell totally Rocks !!!! His newest solo album will be fully released soon, and Gibson is giving away a "Wino" red guitar to his specs ...but I'm not going to use Robert's page to give links,etc.... Go see for yourself !!!! He's one of my MAIN influences now days, and I am just about finished learning ALL songs from AIC Unplugged show off MTV..very cool!!! Stay safe everyone...ROCK ON ROBERT!!!!!
One of my favorites, nice breakdown!
Facelift is aic's best work. They never seemed to capture that rawness and darkness after that record. I remember getting it when it was first released. It came with a vhs video. It had the man in the box video and a live gig. One of my top 10 records.
Lol thumbnail had me thinking Pepper Keenan covering AIC!
Underrated Jerry riff in general: Bargain Basement Howard Hughes
Awesome video! Interesting how the small things make this riff so creative.
One of the BEST BANDS (and riffs) EVER!
Wow never thought of it this way! Thank you for your insights!
You are so much more subdued now that you are in your new studio. I don't know if that it is so calming have the dedicated space or what. Regardless, thanks for the continuous lessons, encouragement, and fun.
This is one of my favorites AIC riffs of all time!
The entire song is underrated honestly because when people ask me my favorite AiC song and I say this they don’t even know what tune i’m talking about, such a shame.
I read in an interview where he said that riff (upstroke E maj) and bend was him grabbing the guitar in frustration in the studio and he ploinked it out. Everyone in the room freaked.
My memory is similar except i thought he tripped which caused the upstroke and bend and the band thought it sounded cool and he thought it sounded dumb. Either way, not really a planned thing.
aw yeah dude! that album is so good!
Why sure, I'd dig a It Ain't Like That solo vid. Thanks for asking!
Jerry is a Riff Lord for sure!
Great video Robert
