It's just a publicity stunt he has more people listening to his music than ever putting out something that generalizes a whole country it's sad no one can see that and he covers his own ass by making it so open to interpretation he would be shooting his own foot if he explained the video.
Interviewer: imma ask Donald Glover what's the meaning of This Is America Donald Glover: dude, that's Childish Gambino, i have no idea, you got me mistaken
His rap name isn't childish Gambino, it's "Donaldish Glovino", and it was first "Manish Colombo" but the Colombo crime family claimed copyright infringment using a 2 million dollar contract on his head to he changed it to "baby-like Bonnano" but the Bonanno crime family got mad too, that's when he became "childish Gamblingo" and then ultimately his current rap name "mildish Gay-lingo"
art is supposed to be interpreted by the consumer. explaining art waters it down and makes everyone look at it in a singular way. which limits it. - #IAlreadyKilledEm #NellyIzm #YoungBlackSocialites
Yeah, the moment he explains it, the art loses its charm. Explaining the art will defeat its purpose. The conversation will be over. And the conversation needs to keep going in order to learn from each other and to understand through one another.
mmm the purpose of the art isnt necessarily to convey a message but rather to make you think about things that are going on. If he were to explain his meaning of the song then people would stop thinking about what it could mean and potentially because of that not realise something that wasnt intended by glover but still hold great value
I love that he isn't putting the video into any kind of context and then smoothly brings it back to promoting Solo which is the point of the whole interview anyway. Super classy.
yeah classy AF saying yeah over and over... that was gibberish bullshit. He should have an answer ready for questions like that instead os saying just and yeah all the time.
He can't explain the video because it's designed to be a conversation piece. It's designed for people to interpret it, and open a dialogue with other people about their own personal interpretations. Explaining it would rob people of what they get from it on a personal level.
@@chris135x Bro, you're totally right. Of course I believe you. I think that in 2020, a world where we are basically living in the future, it's strange that the cops only have access to old-school weaponry like this. We can do better by now, it's so wild that we haven't by now. Guns were developed in the 1600's, so the defense "Why shouldn't we shoot them if they are going to shoot us?" is even an argument.
Absolutely. When you release a work of art into the wild like This is America, the LESS you explain about it and let people THINK about it for themselves, the more impact it has. 100% the right call on Donald Glover's part.
Definitely! Artists (and musicians, of course) make art. They don't usually explain their pieces - they exist to entertain and engage, not to make an explicit political statement.
Agreed now its like an open ended question where there is no wrong answer. The video could just be a video, or it can be something deeper and yet those are both right answers to the question behind the video. Essentially the question is over. The new question that arise is what is the context that Donald was talking about, and is it his context or the people who designed the video, is it there context. I tried hopefully this fills in a bit a gray area or it just made things worse, if so sorry :/
The point is he did not need to awnser it it's a song it can be scene in many ways and it helps the world understand the videos messgae if it's in a different way
Oliver 2000 Are you an American white man? My question comes from experience and I honestly think only a white American man could/would take away what you got from this video. The video was/is self explanatory, if you don't get it, that doesn't make it BS. It just means you haven't lived a life where you would experience anything like this or even know or befriend ppl that have.
The music video was mostly race baiting. I won't give it any more credit than that. You can interpret it differently if you want, though. For example, notice that Donald is the one murdering his own people with both the ak and the glock in the video. The shootings in the video could be symbolic of the fact that his own desire to be a famous musician led him to abandon his innocent black brothers and sisters, and through making garbage music videos like this, support the popular (and wrong) race narrative plaguing the media today in a kind of Thanos-like sacrifice. But of course, the key thing here is Thanos knew what he was sacrificing. I honestly think Donald is just too ignorant to be aware that he's parroting a bullshit worldview. I hope I'm wrong.
Mutima H imagine if it was flipped and he asked u if u were a Non American Muslim woman there would be outrage another thing is that he wants the video to be interpreted in many different ways it’s his opinion on the video not yours if anything u didn’t get the point
Hardly. At that point he's holding an invisible umbrella above his answer. He's saying what you take away from it is why he wrote it. It's just a soft stance. I wish he would make his stance and yet continue to live as he does normally. Understanding why other people believe what they they may is so important to maintain growth and solidity. :)
shr00mhead lol listen to his other songs. Watch Atlanta or his stand up... you'll see he's a real artist. He was basically smaking mumble rappers in the face proving you can mumble rap with a message.
The purpose of art is people thinking for themselves. So when an artist explains what the art is about, it means the viewer is no longer thinking for themselves. It’s up for interpretation and it’s designed to be thought provoking. This Is America doesn’t force opinions down your throat. It’s real art that’s mainstream. It’s created a huge conversation and that’s its only true purpose. Phenomenal song and video... on a less serious note - who else kept shitting themselves every time the Millennium Falcon came swooping through in the background?
Hey Zeus Not to sound obnoxious or anything but I like to think of myself as a bit of an artist. Maybe more of a wannabe artist. Aspiring filmmaker and the odd illustrations here and there. I have an Instagram page for my art which includes a piece based on This Is America, but rather than direct you to it I’ll let you reply if you’re interested.
Archerpool music nowadays is about sex drugs and violence “(RAP)” The song “this is America” is not a depiction of America Also the purpose of art is to entertain not “people thinking for themselves” (what ever that means) in fact it would be good for the creator to explain there art. Also is it me or did the song really look like Detroit.
JAKE If you don’t what that means, then you simply cannot tell me I’m wrong. Art wasn’t made to entertain, some art is, like films, but most art isn’t. It’s meant to be thought provoking. I’m pretty sure Michelangelo wasn’t trying to entertain people when he painted The Creation Of Adam. I’m pretty sure when 12 Years A Slave was released in cinemas it’s purpose wasn’t to entertain. And I’m pretty sure This Is America’s sole purpose is to entertain. Art is an expression from the artist.
Huge respect for Donald Glover for not explaining his music video. There wouldn't be such a massive conversation surrounding it if he just revealed everything about his work, and the subject of this particular video needs to be addressed. He managed to spread awareness and really gives his audience the opportunity to educate themselves about the issues referenced in his video. And for those who see his response merely as a publicity stunt to gain more fame or money, just remember that in this day and age, there are significant risks with putting something online that is considered controversial, especially about a sensitive topic like race that could really negatively impact someone's public image. What doesn't stop someone from using Glover's words against him if he were to actually reveal his interpretation of the video? He made a very smart choice.
That all I ever think when people ask why they can't wear capes! Also a strange amount of my friends including myself want capes from time to time. These are normal people I'm talking about. Maybe its more socially acceptable than we think.
Dudes the reason he doesn't want to give his explanation on the meaning of it is because if he does, everyone else will just take his interpretation of it and make it their own and no ones views will have different interpretations of it like they do now, everyone would just say "oh this is what it actually means because that's what Donald said"
Frankie Gonzalez The most simplified answer to what he's trying to do. I agree with you. Idk what's wrong with all these other people not being able to understand something so basic.
Frankie Gonzalez I agree, it would also shift the discussion from the message itself to a critique of how the message was conveyed causing the message to lose some of it's importance in the discussion.
He shouldn't have to explain the video because it speaks for itself. All of the clues are in plain sight. Most media companies will twist his words around and then people will stop looking at the real message.
Elliott Moreno ever heard of a motif? Clearly Gambino repeating the same thing the entire video is him trying to get a message to people because it’s very apparent people need things repeated again and again to see it
Chris Why do I have to talk about it if it’s apart of the same problem? If that’s how you want to go about ending police brutality good luck. Just because white people arent protesting for their people you wanna be mad at me? Not my fault bro. Not anyone else’s either. These communities are seeing injustices and are speaking out for their people. Ain’t nothing wrong with that but you wanna feel offended. Why does the white dude have to be brought up to counter argue me? Doesn’t that make you feel weird.
I always laugh at shit like this cause he never actually changes how he acts or talks but tons of idiots always think they see him switch "characters" but he does absolutely nothing different.
Ain’t No Stoppin’ The Eagles no, he just doesn't want to turn away a large portion of the fans of the song. If he gives an explanation, it will most likely dissapoint everyone that saw it differently. And really, it probably isn't near as deep as everyone is making it.
BigSounds it is a perfect answer to let us interpret the video how we want because if he was to reveal each true meaning then there would be no more conversation about it well not as much anyways. Plus to let us view it how our eyes see it is kinda nice of him lol
Yes in other words it's ours to take it, tweak it, remix it, interpret it, fan fic it, fan art it, to do whatever we want with it. Just like Star Wars.
Oliver 2000 that's why it's called ART you little youngin! You don't get the right to decide. Go and freaking make your own damn video. This goes for ALL OTHER FOOLS who don't understand ART. Do you..,
The sad reality is that people are talking about childish gambino this is America, more than what is actually going on in America it’s an irony in it’s self. It’s done a full circle ⭕️ and it’s fucking perfect.
Oliver 2000 Social media draws our attention to mass shootings as much as it draws us away from them. By the time we've finished reading about it, there are at least 10 other things on the internet that everyone moves on to talking about. Social media and the internet stops the general public from spending too much time focusing on any one issue to do anything about it.
I think it's smart that he didn't explain the context. It will take away the mystery to it. Coz the message in the video is too complex to put in a few words
I don't get why anyone needs or wants Glover to explain his music/video. When you read a classic novel or look at important paintings do you try to find out what the artist's meanings are...or would you rather look at what they made and think for yourself? I think Glover's response is not only fair but admirable.
Actually, I do try to get at what the artist or author is trying to say, not simply how it makes me think. Art is a form of communication between the artist and the one experiencing the art. As such, I want to know what the artist is communicating to me. There might be additional insights later on, but if he's not intending to communicate anything, then I don't really have to pay attention to it, or can make up my own crap about it. The act of experiencing non-communicative art is simply me reading my own experiences into stuff, but that's just lame. I already know my own experiences.
I understand why, he just wants to know what is actually happening. Because when you see the video you aren’t reassured about what it actually happening in the video and you can only make assumptions, and he just wants to be assured that whatever rumor it is about the video is correct.
I've always said that my favorite thing about art is that the 'interpretation' is left up to the viewer to see. The artist just has the images in his head.
That shows how he is a true artist. He does it for himself but at the same time for everyone else. Music is one of those things that each person interprets differently and makes them feel a certain way. He doesn't want to ruin that for anybody.
mrbrainchild76 -- it's not about keeping white people comfortable. The music video is clearly emphasizing the problem of black on black crime. If you took some sort of anti-white message from the video, you must have been watching a different video.
donald: *breathes* me: showstopping. iconic. amazing. brilliant. talented. extrodinary. one of a kind. blissful. enchanting. a legend. genius. running out of words to say-
As someone living in 2021 Im glad he didnt explain it. He shouldn't have explained because if you didnt already understand what the song meant you were the problem. I truly beleive that that song was meant for only certain people to understand. He said "I dont wanna give it any context. Its not really my place" He wanted people to get whatever message they wanted from that song and only a select few truly got it. Im coming back to this because it is the first time I had ever gotten anything from the song because when it came out I was too young to understand. I know this is years later but I just wanna thank him for maing this song because it is so powerful.
I saw another video where someone asked him what he wanted people to get from This Is America and he responded "I just wanted to make something people could play on the 4th July". 😂
Sam Lung including u, our generations thinks anything is art, i sware walk into any art museum and out a pare of broken glass on the corner of the room and watch people think its part of the art gallery. ive done it worked lol its insane we think we all got it down we barely know how to remember half the shit we learn in math and science. but were experts on art lol cmon laugh with me
As soon as you say, “THIS is what it should be seen as.” The analysis stops And we need to keep coming back to things like this that make us think about ourselves
He doesn't want to discuss his music video during a STAR WARS film interview. Not the place or time. Lame interviewer. Respect why the actors are there, to talk about the movie.
TheSarahCherry but he’s happy to talk about capes and baseball games? Just a question who cares about it he could of answered and he choose not to at the end of the day they got over it
thank you for seeing the disrespect here, its not that CB didn't "want to explain" the video, its that he wasn't there for that purpose. the title highlights him in a negative manner.
I agree. The questions should respect the purpose of the interview. You're interviewing for a movie, talk about the movie, you're interviewing for a new album, talk about the album, you're doing a personal interview, talk about whatever concerns the person as long as they are comfortable with it.
Mmmm...yeah....but I honestly think he will never give this video context. He wants the viewer to interpret for themselves. Receive what they receive. And continue the dialogue.
If the song really explained itself there would be no discussion about this issue. Stop trying to look smart saying bullshit like this or repeating what you read or heard about the clip and create your own interpretation, not depreciating others interpretations
Art? This videos just leans to the black communities political views and far left political peoples it's not art it's this guy boosting people's egos like you who think shit like this is art
There’s so many interpretations and underlying meanings that a single answer wouldn’t do it justice I love his answer it’s kind of like him saying “if you’re still asking then you’re still blind” y’know like some things are better left unsaid because it’s evident they speak for themselves Edit: okay 2 things some of you are taking my comment as trying to speak FOR Gambino which makes absolutely no sense at all I’m speaking for me and me only I comment because I don’t mind hearing opposing views and obviously views that agree let me be clear once again Gambino said “No” I, me, and solely myself said what I said in my commentary above as a self interpreted reaction to him saying No those are my thoughts my views not what he’s aiming for not some underlying meaning that he’s put out there literally what I’m projecting as his reasonings for saying no. Simply put: all me. Number 2: I get that you all want to open conversations and have dialogue that’s great!! But uh I’m not sure where or how the whole Kanye and Kevin Hart conversation started but that part wasn’t me lol I wasn’t aiming for that at all not sure how it got there. P.S. I’ve gotten the comment “it’s not that deep” probably like 2 or 3 times already listen we’re different people I’m a thinker, our minds process information differently it may not be that deep and to you you’re right but hey that’s the beauty of opinions right? You have yours and I have mine 😄
It's the exact opposite of Kanye. Kanye won't stop trying to explain himself. And then ends up saying stupid things in the process, like slavery was a choice.
I don't think the underlying meaning is even the point. What i like about the video is that everyone who analyzes it throws a subjective twist on the supposed "message" behind the video. But what is displayed is a compilation of media, anyone can superimpose THEIR story over the video. I think that's the point itself, people when confronted with lots of shocking or emotional imagery will superimpose their viewes, it makes the viewers explain their beliefs rather than use Glovers and saying whether they agree with it or not. Which also coincides with the fact that glover doesn't want to explain the video. I really doubt it's as "black lives matter" as people make it out to be, i think it's much more principle.
Kenia Romero except when it's so inconsistent and just observing it shows the glaring holes in its narrative. Then yes observation kills a narrative. Wouldn't you agree.
Adam H in this case , it's just needlessly loaded , but Donald knows that he's going to make a lot of money in the process. So why should he dispell his video, which is so broadly topical. Every dick and Harry will interpret something of it.
Except "This is America" isn't just art. It's a huge racial and political statement. You can't throw yourself into the political arena and then choose to opt out when people are asking questions. I guess he's living up to his name: Childish
zach// My favorite part (this is a bit of sarcasm - but seems to agree with your statement): "and yeah, I just feel like, yeah..." He wants us to "walk away with whatever [we] feel like."
Amelia Chi its the rick and morty profile pic combined by his complete misspelling of the term “artsy”. Arty is slang for artillery. Definitely r/iamverysmart
I’m glad he didn’t explain, no matter what his reason was. Music is a form of art. An artist creates something to put a message out there, his art speaks for itself, it’s the tool he uses to send a message, to express himself in a way. And what’s great about it, is that every person interprets it differently, there is no wrong explanation, it’s all in how you see it. When the artist explains, it kind of ruins that. For example, the song “jealous” by labyrinth, the guy from AGT sang it for his best friend who died, another person could sing it for something completely different, like an ex who is with someone new. We should all enjoy art the way we interpret it.
Ignore him Chloe ... @ThoughtGaze please eloborate how is he being pretentious? Seems to me that you dont get the message in the video and trust me if you dont just say that! Dont knock art down because you cant comprehend the messages in it ...
Deep? Well his analysis certainly isn't. He's interpreting the headline stories to be representative or examples or some sort of oppressions against black people in society. He has turned anecdotes into a trend, which is nonsense. Mr Glover should look at the stats.
I actually really like this idea. I always thought that if I was an artist I wouldn’t explain my video either because I would not want to explain it and ever person to be like “ oh he made it so this is the idea and the only thing it could be” but if u let everybody have their own idea, then it’s innovation and better theories then what u came up with in the first place come up. That’s why they’Re many theory videos on this video. It’s pretty beautiful
LeoIsWet5 sadly there are still those with the "im right you're wrong" mentality, often associated with the need to feel more superior than others :/ Either that or they just hopping in the wagon for ez bait
As a cynic I wonder if, contractually, he was perhaps obligated not to drop any controversial bon mots until profit from the new movie is secured. Big studios stand to lose a lot of money if they're ensnared in these political battles, as we learned with Weinstein, Gibson, etc. But I really love that he declined to discuss it. Not that we shouldn't have these conversations, but the symbolism in that video was a big part of the magic. Giving concrete meaning to the symbols would reduce that magic to a formula.
Agree completely. Not explaining it leaves room for open conversations over such a controversial video. Creates conversations and open mindedness I think at least. I’ve seen so many break downs and reactions and just wow.
I really love his abrupt, direct answer. Like no he's not going to spoonfeed us what the symbolism in his art means. And he doesn't beat around the bush or use niceties to say that, he just says "no" lol Also you have to respect his boldness, in the timing of releasing this video. I bet the greedy juggernaut that Disney has become put hard pressure on him to not doing anything that's not "PC" before the release of the movie and that did not stop him at all. Bravo
I appreciate the sentiment in your comment but if you're referring to this is America being "Not PC" the only not pc part of it is the gunfire. It's might be very loud, but it's entirely within the realm of political normalcy.
I didn't necessarily mean that the video isn't "PC" and I probably shouldn't have used that word, I just meant that it is definitely a very bold video that could cause significant controversy. It seems clear to me that Disney would not want anything of the sort in the days leading up to the release of their movie to possibly jeopardize the financial return on the film. I apologize for using the wrong term.
walterjs1991 Scott lmao how ignorant are you? Y'all act like this man is so out there nobody can possibly understand his depths. Lol he highlighted nothing new.
Falling for the actual distractions. Acting like this man is such a genius the people who actually assassinate folks couldn't possibly understand why he'd be running from a bunch of white people. You know the puppet masters let this happened and encourage it right? Don't fall for this divisive propaganda. Educate and empower yourself brother. Sorry for insinuating you're ignorant I'm just so frustrated with all the lies. Time to stand up and unite all. This isn't about white man holding black man down. This should be about coming together under truth, not false narratives. One Love
Yeah, black on black crime, chaos with gun violence, mass shootings, idolizing rappers and guns then turning their backs when it matters, corrupt police brutality. The list goes on and on!
Kemi Afolabi not if you don't live in America like me who's mostly ignorant of the country's social issues. Only thing I got from the video was "America is too trigger happy"
Oliver 2000 I see your point however he wasn't here in this particular interview to talk about his music. He's here to talk about a movie coming out. I've seen the lyrical break down. At the end out the day people will take things as they want. Set the dancing aside and you have something raw. Something people don't like to talk about and that's the cold hearted truth. Fucked up things are happening in this country and people pull Thier phones out the media rushes over with cameras etc etc etc. But he's on this interview with a co-star to promote a movie not his music
Latin Ace This is America. Everything has to be spoon fed and people can’t pay attention and read between the lines. In the music video, chaos is happening in the back but Donald is in his own world. What I think the commenter is implying is that the interviewer is in his own world, paying little to no attention to what was happening in the video to the point where the video has to be explained for him and he doesn’t even have his own interpretation.
Drink Bleach theirs many different meanings thru out thr video tho. Yes donald is distracting u from the chaos in thr background but what do all those things going on in the background mean??? "This is cellly, thats a tool". What does that mean? U obviously don't know. Just keep assuming clown
Latin Ace I’m not talking about what the video means, I’m talking about what the commenter is implying about the video. Of course I don’t know what it means, nobody does because, as evident by this very video, it’s left to interpretation. There are no rights or wrongs.
I agree. I feel that is why Donald Glover didn't want to talk about it and tried to bring it back to Solo by saying something like this movie can be whatever you want it to be about..
Jacob Foster nah, man. it’s also the wrong place. this is hosted by the creators of Star Wars. Glover is their because he has to be for the movie. Childish Gambino on the other hand did not come to be interviewed. If he wanted to be interviewed about his music, he would’ve went to Breakfast Club, or Hot 97. It is disrespect. There’s level to this. Interviewer should know his place.
This is what Art should be, and expressive art at its simplistic form. When you explain an art then you lose enjoyment over what you see and what the artist has lead you to see. so bravo on the attitude.
I really dislike videos that make you watch something unrelated to the caption BEFORE showing you what you came for. And usually, what you came for only last up to 10% of the whole clip. What a waste
i really hate people that complain about things like having to listen to more information from a video they didn't have to watch as if they had more important things to do like scroll through their phone for hours and waste time until they DIE ALONE
Alfred Svantesson i think it's pretty self explanatory the second time you watch it, cuz at first i was only paying attention to Donald, then everyone was like "pay attention to the background."
I mean, he literally said he's not explaining it, which means he's allowing people to interpret it for themselves. Not for ignorant asshats to put words in his mouth like yourself
I’m crying 😭. Yo I love him . I swear when this came out I knew he wasn’t going to tell anyone what the video means because that’s why keeps the interest going because some people’s theories are mad funny and interesting 😭😭
Nick Perez you literally read the words “came out” and instantly thought he was gay. That just kinda proves the kind of people sharing things on the internet without any knowledge behind them loool
He doesn’t have to explain it, we’re definitely living it now
Big facts
c exactly. nothing new is happening. ppl are just taking action now
no we're not
KATIE SORTO me time for you

I’m so happy he said “it’s for the people” 👏👏👏👏

art should be open to interpretation. love donald's answer.
Ahhhhh you know Michelangelo’s David is meticulously calculated down to where he was originally placed... sigh... you art experts....
Ayeee it's FG!!! Love your vids man. Been following you for years
It's just a publicity stunt he has more people listening to his music than ever putting out something that generalizes a whole country it's sad no one can see that and he covers his own ass by making it so open to interpretation he would be shooting his own foot if he explained the video.
Chris Davis u are so stupid cause u do realize that was his last song. Also he is already so successful for instance, the man has two Grammys
So If someone interpreted this as a call for Africa-Americans to take up arms in revolution it would a correct interpretation?
Interviewer: imma ask Donald Glover what's the meaning of This Is America
Donald Glover: dude, that's Childish Gambino, i have no idea, you got me mistaken
Best comment by far thank you 😍😍🤣🤣🤣
You are welcome here is the meaning.ruclips.net/video/38ZfJRiuuss/видео.html
that would have been a much better answer
His rap name isn't childish Gambino, it's "Donaldish Glovino", and it was first "Manish Colombo" but the Colombo crime family claimed copyright infringment using a 2 million dollar contract on his head to he changed it to "baby-like Bonnano" but the Bonanno crime family got mad too, that's when he became "childish Gamblingo" and then ultimately his current rap name "mildish Gay-lingo"
Why is this so funny 😭😭😭

This Is America is art though.
Brush "This is America" ain't like other modern music, it's actually really, really fucking good.
Yeah for sure, best he could do is tell us how he was feeling at the time.
Beautifully said
i like Donald Glover but i like his twin brother Childish gambino more
Wtf
😂😂
Kurt's Angel yes, me too, because he is half naked
best comment of the day😂😂😂
U got to be joking right?!....they the same person freako lol
The moment he explains it.. the song is forgotten..
Tjay Nónii nope
Tjay Nónii pretty much, it’s better to let our minds wonder that way it could be a conversation piece

The real VIP
Thank you!
uhhh what? im looking at a paused clip at 2;20 and a solo poster in the middle of the screen. and ......for what???/ explain,,
its when he actually started talking about "This Is America".
What can I say except... ;)
1.4 million views to see Donald say "No" , ironic
Frankie P. 1.5*
1.4 mil on why hollywood wont cast jaden anymore, even more ironic
You might want to look up the definition of irony
alex esposito Nah
Not what irony is 😪
I love that he refused to explain the video because it forces everyone to use their brains and figure it out for themselves.
or its because there's no real meaning to the video and he doesn't want to admit it
Rumford Chimpenstein I mean, whatever keeps your colon clean, girl.
he was high as fuck, has no idea what its all about himself, riding the wave now that it blew up.
PinkMetalHead it forces people to understand lol wut
PinkMetalHead It does, and I think the speculation is part of what makes the song.
I love that he isn't putting the video into any kind of context and then smoothly brings it back to promoting Solo which is the point of the whole interview anyway. Super classy.
Agreed! That was brilliant
Neither the song or video have any meaning and Glover knows it.
yeah im sure he gunned down a church choir in his video without any meaning behind it. get your head outta your ass.
jadius That was smooth. He's a pro.
yeah classy AF saying yeah over and over... that was gibberish bullshit.
This 100%, that's the best explanation from these comments as to why he didn't want to talk about it
@@alexwells6876 Thanks, man. I still think artists should want you to experience their work without explanation also.
You don't know that. Good explanation though.
@@suckitnerdSS uh that's how art is, is for people to interpret however they want

RELEVƎ⅃ƎЯ your Irish aswell???
Absolutely. When you release a work of art into the wild like This is America, the LESS you explain about it and let people THINK about it for themselves, the more impact it has. 100% the right call on Donald Glover's part.
RELEVƎ⅃ƎЯ Why don’t you shut up. Great reply. Definitely agree. Thank you 👍 xo
Seriously tho, are you a bot?
He should never explain his intentions in creating the entire experience. Interpret and move on.
Great interview, Chris.

Are you an American white man?
I love his answer! That is what a true artist does. He lets his work speak for itself and leaves it to audience perception.
To me the song and video mean that Glover has neither talent or vision.
Steve Baron exaclty
shr00mhead lol listen to his other songs. Watch Atlanta or his stand up... you'll see he's a real artist. He was basically smaking mumble rappers in the face proving you can mumble rap with a message.
shr00mhead I've seen you on like 5 comment threads now. You're trying too hard mate. We get it you don't like the song or glover now have a rest.
Steve Baron you love his answer? That's gay to love another guy
Archerpool your right, christopher nolan said the same thing when they asked him about the endings to his movies
Well said
Archerpool music nowadays is about sex drugs and violence “(RAP)”
The song “this is America” is not a depiction of America
Also the purpose of art is to entertain not “people thinking for themselves” (what ever that means) in fact it would be good for the creator to explain there art.

Neither the song or video have any meaning and Glover knows it.
Tydie freeman It's a mumble rap... There is no meaning in it or in the dancing video.
Elliott Moreno ever heard of a motif? Clearly Gambino repeating the same thing the entire video is him trying to get a message to people because it’s very apparent people need things repeated again and again to see it

Jeremy Menning
You’re a wise man.
I understand why, he just wants to know what is actually happening. Because when you see the video you aren’t reassured about what it actually happening in the video and you can only make assumptions, and he just wants to be assured that whatever rumor it is about the video is correct.
They want to know because it bothers them inside because their intuition is screaming this is you!!!!!
In other words: The revolution will not be televised.

TheSarahCherry but he’s happy to talk about capes and baseball games? Just a question who cares about it he could of answered and he choose not to at the end of the day they got over it
TheSarahCherry ikr when actors are there to promote a movie it’s rude to ask about something personal or aside from the film
thank you for seeing the disrespect here, its not that CB didn't "want to explain" the video, its that he wasn't there for that purpose. the title highlights him in a negative manner.

The song explains its self ...why he need to explain TWICE?!
The lyrics are the opposite of the video. The dancing and lyrics distract us from what's happening on the background.
mrbrainchild76 Yet you didn't capitalize very.
Explain it then
There’s so many interpretations and underlying meanings that a single answer wouldn’t do it justice I love his answer it’s kind of like him saying “if you’re still asking then you’re still blind” y’know like some things are better left unsaid because it’s evident they speak for themselves
Edit: okay 2 things some of you are taking my comment as trying to speak FOR Gambino which makes absolutely no sense at all I’m speaking for me and me only I comment because I don’t mind hearing opposing views and obviously views that agree let me be clear once again Gambino said “No” I, me, and solely myself said what I said in my commentary above as a self interpreted reaction to him saying No those are my thoughts my views not what he’s aiming for not some underlying meaning that he’s put out there literally what I’m projecting as his reasonings for saying no.
It's really not that deep
Facts

Explanation kills art
Kenia Romero except when it's so inconsistent and just observing it shows the glaring holes in its narrative. Then yes observation kills a narrative. Wouldn't you agree.
Great art makes people think, and thinking leads to wanting answers, which art never fully provides and thus remains an enigma.
Adam H in this case , it's just needlessly loaded , but Donald knows that he's going to make a lot of money in the process. So why should he dispell his video, which is so broadly topical. Every dick and Harry will interpret something of it.

Amelia Chi its the rick and morty profile pic combined by his complete misspelling of the term “artsy”. Arty is slang for artillery. Definitely r/iamverysmart
Luis Castillo SorrowTV should see this comment chain, omg
It needs no explanation. The message is clear. Imagine if all artists were this deep.
it needs no explanation, it's pretentious garbage. imagine if all artists were this pretentious, wait... a lot of them are... whoops
ThoughtGaze you sound goofy asf
Ignore him Chloe ... @ThoughtGaze please eloborate how is he being pretentious? Seems to me that you dont get the message in the video and trust me if you dont just say that! Dont knock art down because you cant comprehend the messages in it ...
Deep? Well his analysis certainly isn't. He's interpreting the headline stories to be representative or examples or some sort of oppressions against black people in society. He has turned anecdotes into a trend, which is nonsense.
Mr Glover should look at the stats.
Instantaneous Sanic goofy is childish gambinos music video
I actually really like this idea. I always thought that if I was an artist I wouldn’t explain my video either because I would not want to explain it and ever person to be like “ oh he made it so this is the idea and the only thing it could be” but if u let everybody have their own idea, then it’s innovation and better theories then what u came up with in the first place come up. That’s why they’Re many theory videos on this video. It’s pretty beautiful
LeoIsWet5 sadly there are still those with the "im right you're wrong" mentality, often associated with the need to feel more superior than others :/
Either that or they just hopping in the wagon for ez bait
As a cynic I wonder if, contractually, he was perhaps obligated not to drop any controversial bon mots until profit from the new movie is secured. Big studios stand to lose a lot of money if they're ensnared in these political battles, as we learned with Weinstein, Gibson, etc.
But I really love that he declined to discuss it. Not that we shouldn't have these conversations, but the symbolism in that video was a big part of the magic. Giving concrete meaning to the symbols would reduce that magic to a formula.
LeoIsWet5 the beauty of at❤
Totally agree, works with story telling as well.
Agree completely. Not explaining it leaves room for open conversations over such a controversial video.
Creates conversations and open mindedness I think at least. I’ve seen so many break downs and reactions and just wow.
There is no need to explain the message was very clear!
Exactly.
The very idea that there was just one message is wrong
mrbrainchild76 there's a reason he didn't do that.
It's clear his messages is that he wants to show everyone how a terrible "song" sounds
shambla isby EXACTLY! What's there to explain. The message was very clear.
This guy is truly an artist. Not a rapper a musician an actor. No. He’s an artist awesome to see him. Awesome
He didn't wanna take the spotlight away from Solo. I respect that. he separates his movies from his music. 😟
Its because he doesnt even know what the meaning is. Hahaha
mrbrainchild76 it is
Buried YoUx how do you sound?
I really love his abrupt, direct answer. Like no he's not going to spoonfeed us what the symbolism in his art means. And he doesn't beat around the bush or use niceties to say that, he just says "no" lol
Also you have to respect his boldness, in the timing of releasing this video.
SkullCrusherG777 "PC" is such a wrongly defined term these days that it's impossible to know exactly what someone means when they say it. . .
If he explained it, he would die
Edit: 1000 Likes!?
Vapor Blue thanks at least u understand💯
I agree 100%
Nah he wouldnt have made it. Just want people to look and think for themselves. Without having to explain all the time.
Lol, smart man.
Exactly the illuminati
"And yeah, i just feel like yeah" hahaha
*IT'S A SECRET*
einstin! *YEET*
Yup,and if he comments on it he’ll most likely be killed for it,or broken down
walterjs1991 Scott lmao how ignorant are you? Y'all act like this man is so out there nobody can possibly understand his depths. Lol he highlighted nothing new.
quickdraw McGraw how am I ignorant though?what did I say that was close to being ignorant?
Falling for the actual distractions. Acting like this man is such a genius the people who actually assassinate folks couldn't possibly understand why he'd be running from a bunch of white people. You know the puppet masters let this happened and encourage it right? Don't fall for this divisive propaganda. Educate and empower yourself brother. Sorry for insinuating you're ignorant I'm just so frustrated with all the lies. Time to stand up and unite all. This isn't about white man holding black man down. This should be about coming together under truth, not false narratives. One Love
Great interview as usual love it dude
Ali Kayyal his questions were garbage. The guy from Hot Ones interviews waaaaaay better by a landslide.
Wow thanks for the love guys 727 likes...
Ali Kayyal kiss ass
Jay Sho whats your problem tho??
Callum Bishop lol
I think the messages were PRETTY CLEAR in the music video🙄
Kemi Afolabi I think you'd be surprised. Many people claim there is no message. 😒
But there’s so many more hidden messages
That is extremely subjective. There are several messages and different interpretations of the video.
The music video was pure art. He did a very nice job in it and it was very well put together.
Joseph Campbell: "Ask an artist what his [art] means... if he dispises you enough, he'll tell you."
I’m legit only going to watch this film cuz of him
Natania you are going to very disappointed
Same
I'm still not going to watch it not a fan of solo. I'll see it for free tho
Star Wars is dead
John Smith Shut up you fake woke racist.
Very humbling. That was a very good answer
2:20 thank me later
thanks
Thankkk youuu
Lol the video explains it self, I feel like he’s thinking if I have to explain it to you then exactly “this is America.”
Stash PHL ok so what does it mean
Well he mean that America have this crimes and violence but we still love america
That’s disrespectful, this is a star wars interview. This guy tried to take an opportunity to interview childish gambino when it wasn’t given to him.
I agree. I feel that is why Donald Glover didn't want to talk about it and tried to bring it back to Solo by saying something like this movie can be whatever you want it to be about..
A lot of interviewers do that. They talk about up coming projects and recent projects. They tend to do that a lot
Views from The Lookout that's what I was thinking
Views from The Lookout agreed
Jacob Foster nah, man. it’s also the wrong place. this is hosted by the creators of Star Wars. Glover is their because he has to be for the movie. Childish Gambino on the other hand did not come to be interviewed. If he wanted to be interviewed about his music, he would’ve went to Breakfast Club, or Hot 97. It is disrespect. There’s level to this. Interviewer should know his place.
Wtf is that thing flying around in the back like GO AWAY
We must know.
Meagan Cervantes the millennium falcon lmfao
The Millennium Falcon. He was a character in the movie Solo. That's why it's there lol
You never seen Star Wars?
Erica Hester gotcha, it’s so distracting in this video lmao
This is what Art should be, and expressive art at its simplistic form. When you explain an art then you lose enjoyment over what you see and what the artist has lead you to see. so bravo on the attitude.
I really dislike videos that make you watch something unrelated to the caption BEFORE showing you what you came for. And usually, what you came for only last up to 10% of the whole clip. What a waste
Manuel Stark it’s called “clickbait” welcome to RUclips.
Yung Nando then they should title it as such. Doesn't make it legal just because it wasn't a terrible
Manuel Stark 5% to be precise
i really hate people that complain about things like having to listen to more information from a video they didn't have to watch as if they had more important things to do like scroll through their phone for hours and waste time until they DIE ALONE
ESPECIALLY WHEN THE TITLE TELLS THEM THERE'S NO INFORMATION OR EXPLANATION.
It does not need to be explained
Alfred Svantesson why not? Their will only be assumptions
No, its up to yourself
Alfred Svantesson i think it's pretty self explanatory the second time you watch it, cuz at first i was only paying attention to Donald, then everyone was like "pay attention to the background."
nigga it obviously has a meaning so it can can be explained
Keala Flores it speaks for itself
I mean the song title is "this is america" wtf you think he means in the video ?? Get a clue
The video is pretty self explanatory. It’s just the state of how the country is in and used to be. You have to pay real good attention to it.
I’m sorry but that ship in the background was distracting me. I was trying to see how long it takes for that ship to circle back around.
ShifTy 15 so how long does it take
Me Too!!! At first, I was...wtf is that? Then I couldn't take my eyes off of it. Lols
ShifTy 15 OMG 😂😂😂
fuck you for this LMAO
I thought it was gonna hit them 😂😂
He doesn't have to explain because it's already been explained
You explain it to yourself what you think the video is about.
Pretty much lol
Yea like 8 thousand different ways, he can’t tell you because he doesn’t know.
Exactly.
Look at the way he smiles when he says "it's for the people" 2:40 he's not talking about the general public
I mean, he literally said he's not explaining it, which means he's allowing people to interpret it for themselves.
Not for ignorant asshats to put words in his mouth like yourself
if thats what you need to walk away with. then sure
Yeah, uhhuh okay.
He meant all of us actually, you doink.
u sound like one of those people who say he will not divide us but then divide urself lmao u fuckin tool
I think he means all people...the people. What the fuck
Donald: "I feel like yeah"
Gambino: "I feel like summer"
Sweet!
I’m crying 😭. Yo I love him . I swear when this came out I knew he wasn’t going to tell anyone what the video means because that’s why keeps the interest going because some people’s theories are mad funny and interesting 😭😭
wait he’s gay!!??
Nick Perez how did u get he's gay out of any of that lol
Nick Perez how dumb are you please let me know
But you actually cried during this interview?
Nick Perez you literally read the words “came out” and instantly thought he was gay. That just kinda proves the kind of people sharing things on the internet without any knowledge behind them loool
