10 Years Building a Wooden Sailboat for Life on the Water - Retired Couple Shares Experience + Tour

- Sombrio is a 33' wooden sailboat that was lovingly built by Ian (a.k.a. KIM) over the course of 10 years with mostly reclaimed lumber that he collected and milled himself, including Douglas fir, red cedar, and yew wood. The boat has been a huge part of Ian and Sandi's lives: the now-retired couple lived aboard the boat for 7 years, they summer cruised the Gulf Islands for several decades (and still do!), and they also did a massive 2-year trip to the South Pacific from August 2017- August 2019.
The boat has a galley kitchen with a gimbal and methyl hydrate stove, a 12-volt fridge, plenty of counter space, and a safety belt to make cooking safer when the boat is underway. The saloon has a sofa with a table for lounging and dining and lots of storage for books and non-perishable food. Moving forward, there's a head, storage locker, and a cozy v-berth with porthole windows and a hatch for ventilation.
Sombrio is an Oceania model, designed by Al Mason and built with the carvel planking method. The boat has a 26 hp, 3 cylinder Isuzu diesel engine with 50 gallons of fuel, for electricity it can use shore power as well as 2 x 100 Watt solar panels, for water there is 50 gallons of freshwater storage below deck, extra jerry cans on deck, and a saltwater pump for non-potable purposes, and for heat, there's a big wood stove in the galley.
This is a beautiful boat, built and used by lovely people and we're so happy to be sharing their boat life experience with you.
Special thank you to Simon from Finding Simon for filming the interview, tour, and some of the b-roll! You can follow his sailboat-building adventure on RUclips here: / findingsimon

@The Grey Hat Na I think you're a bit misguided bud.
Just so that you all know , Ian is a Scotsman, he’s determined, opinionated and steadfast and a great friend , I’ve loved this guy for almost 40 years , so glad he finally made it out there !
I know this boat locally for years. Even the place they moor it is an amazing spot. Some people make their fortune through their good and honest endeavour. Salt of the earth.
This truly is a boat built with love!
The couple are genuinely beautiful people, warm, kind, honest and loving, they match their boat magnificently!
It is clear to see that this is a very well constructed boat, everything carried out with meticulous care.
They keep their boat in vrry good condition, because as they said, it requires a lot of work to keep a wooden boat in good condition.
The interior is a masterpiece of ergonomics and compartmentalised, space saving efficiency!
This illustrates their experience in living aboard, both at mooring, dock and sea.
This is one of your best interviews.
I worked as Ian’s right hand building the 130’ schooner Pacific Grace back in 1997. I was 28 years old and Ian, at 45 years old, kicked my ass daily. He was a boatbuilding machine. I have a huge respect for this man. He’s a local treasure.
Really enjoyed hearing their story!
its so nice to hear from someone who have lived
My family built a sailboat and we lived on it. I kept the boat into my adulthood. Boat life is hard work, dirty work and expensive work. The dreamy parts are what makes you do it, and they are wonderful, but the reality is that the engine, mast, rigging and hull are prone to breaking and the consequences can be disastrous, even fatal. That’s why you have to poor a ton of money into it, learn as you go (to save money) and accept the risks because of the dreamy benefits. Weather and navigation are additional learning curves with huge risks. It’s worth it, if you have the tenacity and money. But keep your eyes wide open.
I really admire this couple, enjoying full freedom!
Beautiful is the word that comes to mind most watching this video. Their lives are beautiful. They are living a precious and beautiful journey together on their handmade wooden sailing vessel. It's most touching to see.
This is beautiful. Definitely a boat filled with love, happiness and joyful memories! Amazing couple.
What a wonderful story and a beautiful boat.. wish I had discovered a love for sailing earlier in my life, I would have spent the decade building a wooden sailboat. Hopefully I will come across a couple who have decided to let their boat go to new stewardship..
So inspiring. What a beautiful boat and such tenacity and determination. Amazing.
Living on a boat and sailing to new places was always a dream of mine. Never came to pass, and unlikely now, but I love seeing stories of the people who actually did it!
Kim and Sandy are truly as wonderful and loving as they are in the interview. So happy for them both they were able to have their world adventure in the past couple of years, they worked towards it for decades and they are an inspiring couple, I'm so lucky to have them as my neighbours. A great interview and very inspiring!
Beautiful boat. Beautiful people. Beautiful story. Thanks for sharing.
Please tell them how awesome they are!!! Respect...
Beautiful, industrious and adventuresome people!
A beautiful couple with a beautiful story. Despite having a fear of open water, they make the lifestyle just sound so majestic. I'm so happy they're living out their dream 💙
A work of love and art
Congratulations from OzTralia

Beautiful. Reminds me of my years as a liveaboard in Seattle.
Thank you for a wonderful video.... beautiful boat .
What a beautiful story... This couple is so inspiring. They way they've worked together and supported one another; they way they've been flexible and resourceful; they way they've realized what's really important in life. Wonderful.
You have an amazing story. Perhaps we will see you down the road.
Thank you for sharing your beautiful story... building your boat for all these yeas, and to finally live and travel with your companion. A life worth living!
Beautiful boat and couple
That boat really does have a soul that I can feel

Wow! I LOVE this one!
They are living their dream. Thanks for sharing their story.❤
Love this story.. beautiful colors you painted her!
His story of how he sourced the lumber to build the boat was very intriguing. Matching the natural curve of the tree to the boat takes a really keen eye.
Remarkable couple .... amazing story .... thank you!!
So good to see people my own age doing this. Gives me hope.
Great story, thank you very much. Having built the boat must really add to the sailing! My wife and I sailed the S Pacific on a 31 foot wood boat in the late 70s. Like you we had no gadgets to fail, and navigated by sextant. A life forming experience.
Thank you for this beautiful video and sharing their wonderful story!!💗😊
Reminds me of the book I’m reading “sea wife” if u love the idea of living on a boat and are a book nerd I highly recommend it! Beautiful video I love seeing people love their dreams ❤️
Check out some of Capn' Fatty Goodlanders books....they're a hoot
Just ordered it
Thanks for the recommendation, I'll be checking it out!
Read the sequel "seamen"
Oh my goodness, so beautiful. The simple beauty and craftsmanship, just magical. Lovely story...
Thanks for another awesome video guys!!
Thanks so much Phil :)
You are almost giving me enough hope at 65... with COPD, which sucks. I wish I could sail again. And just do that for my ending years, however long it may be. Hence I'm subscribing to so many of these types of 'channels'. I'm glad to witness you two doing this. It gives me some hope. Not to forget, you guys planned all of this, and worked your butts off - so I salute you both for that.
This is definition of freedom.
what an amazing and wonderful story,{and jealous} it is to both of you well deserved and earned wish you all best of luck and safe voyages with water under your keel.
What a beautiful story. Amazing people. These are the type of people we should set our aspirations to, not selfish, spoiled, mindless consumers.
I wish them many safe voyages
Just fantastic, two wonderful people, a beautiful boat hand crafted with love and care along with life journeys that have been rewarded for fulfilling your dreams. As a sailor and a human being I have enormous respect for both of you!
How very lovely, the warmth, the maturity, the sense of adventure and tremendous practical craftsmanship. Utterly charming. Bravo guys, bravo.
I am speechless for the both of you what a wonderful accomplishment.
I recognise the marina and I'm pretty sure I've seen the boat around before too! What a beautiful vessel with so much hard work put into her. A work of art!! We were always the same with our little sailboat - often the smallest one around without power anything haha.
Beautifull story I wish you Both many more happy years to Come.
What an admirable couple you both are!
This is wonderful story of love and dedication.
And when my life is over I can float out into the Sea. No caskets no ceremonies just beautiful goodbyes. We come from the earth we should go back to the earth
I'm glad the windows stayed open for all his dreams and handwork. And he got to enjoy the fruit of his labour.
Yours is a wonderful story, and encourages me greatly that my own aspiration is actually realizable. Thank you!
Life and time are so precious. God bless you, you are so inspiring!
wow nice boat thanks for sharing vid. Nothing beats living on the water!
I love your home, it's perfect. Thank you for sharing.
That was the best one ever
What a wonderful well lived and living light you two shine. May it ever be
For the past 40 years, I've been working so I could retire. I bought a 32ft marinette about 5 years ago and that changed my mind about retirement. In 4 years, I'm going to sell my 32 ft marinette and buy a sailboat to live on. I really like the Gaff rigged cutter, so that's what I'm looking for. I just wish I had experienced the boat life earlier in life. I love stories like this one. Thanks for posting.
Gaffers are very pretty, but the gaff is heavy and dangerous, especially if you're short handed. Just a thought.
That's a great story. Congratulations you two.
Fantastic. Thank you for bringing us their story.
What a story!, what a couple !, what a boat !, probably the best boat of Love I’ve yet to see on you tube ! Thanks Alternatives
Nice couple safe sailing, its my dream to sail someday…
I love your video beautiful boat i really enjoy it i'm 58 now born with a rare disease .In my next life i will get a boat live on it.
What a great story, beautiful boat and lovely couple. Wishing you many more years to enjoy.
Wonderful story. Thank you.
Great story. Inspiring. Well filmed and edited.
Bless you both hope you carry on sailing for as long as you wish. Good Luck !
How incredibly beautiful.
This is a sustainable boat and lifestyle. I admire that and think is a good example for future generations.
A very inspiring story, seeing folks of a similar age getting out and just 'doing it' gives the confidence to realise my plans to sail into retirement.
I simply have to thank both of you for sharing such a beautiful and insightful video . It just proves what you can accomplish and do if you have the will and tenacity to stay focused . I also have always admired Al Mason as a marine architect .
Robert
North Star.
I like what you have done and think your in a good place for living a clean life. I have sailed in the Gulf Islands..... heaven.
Very few if any of the stores on the water compare to this one. Truly remarkable!
Amazing, sail on smooth seas to you both !
Thank you for sharing, just wonderful! They are so sweet.
Beautiful boat, a proper ocean cruiser with her ketch rig and double ender design. It's also painted in my favourite colour for boats, what I call work boat green, it's definitely the best colour for a wooden sailboat. Lovely story as well in the building her yourself over many years, great stuff, inspirational
What a wonderful story, and such a nice couple, so inspiring.
What a great story and video. I was captivated from start to finish. Thank you. 🙏
this is cool family !!!

I need a wood shop like that. Love to do that someday.

a beautiful boat wish I had the time to build one like it
How cool that you built your own boat! It’s great! We love it!
Do you remember where you got the 5 gallon water jug with two handles built into them. Great for locking down on deck. Wonderful boat well though out.
Thanks for posting and sharing. I am so glad for this couple that they were able to make the trip to the Pacific. Wonderful story.
Bless you all.
Beautiful boat, inspiring couple. Your unintrusive interview and video technique does the subjects proud.
They have warmed my heart and reminded me that dreams do not have to remain unfulfilled, with perseverance and love everything is possible.
Fair winds and safe harbours.
