_Ranma 1/2_ , not _Ranma Wanted_ , although that does describe half of his problems. I'm also nervous about how this reboot is going to go. Will they do it as a period piece in 1980's Japan, and follow the manga more closely? Will they have it take place in the mid- to late 2020s, with updated technology and social norms? I'm rewatching the series, and both the Tendos and the Saotomes are _very_ traditional Japanese families, even though Suon's wife is passed. They believe very strongly in traditional gender roles despite Ranma's Jusenkyo Cursed form. And a lot of the drama comes from his many suitors and fiancees, all Genma's fault, of course. Not to mention the pacing, as the storytelling is much slower than it is today. There were also lots of filler episodes in the original anime. Finally, gender forms and roles, because of course you have Ranma, but you also have crossdressers, and effectively some other trans categories are also possible, depending on how you interpret it. Ranma himself mostly identifies as a man, even when he uses his female form to get extra food, or to tease Ryoga. But most Jusenkyo Cursed have animal forms that have nothing to do with gender roles or norms. There are a couple episodes where Ranma's female form acts as a woman, but those don't relate to Ranma in his normal state. And then there are the parts where he has to hide from his mother, Nodoka, because Genma promised to return Ranma as a 'man among men,' or they would both commit seppuku. A promise Nodoka takes very seriously, as she's always seen carrying around a katana.
What did they do with the Urusei Yatsura remake since I imagine it will be similar. It's likely though that a focus will be partially on covering manga storylines so the only times Ranma acts womanly is to hide from Nodoka. Nodoka and Ranma's proper reunion will probably be properly included, I don't think in the manga there's really any trans characters other then arguably characters cursed to be in a Jusenkyo form that goes against their identity.
It's sorta like the Ostro problem in the Mario universe "Didn't you guys say in the SMB2 instruction manual that Ostro was a boy that wishes he was a girl?" "We umm...err well that is, our current position on Ostro is....WHAT'S THAT OVER THERE?!? (runs away)" I don't have a clue how the show will compare. The original was my first anime and remains one of my most favorite. If this new thing is good, I'm ready to embrace it. If it's bad, I'm prepared to ignore it. The only thing I would like to see to either the manga or the anime would be a _proper_ conclusion. We never got all of the true-pairings finally get together in either, and we're all forced to pretend that it happens in the background. Ranma/Akane, Shampoo/moose, Kuno/Nabiki, Happosai/Cologne, Kasumi/Tofu, Genma/Nodoka, Ryoga/Ukyo...just make it happen.
