    Dude, what a great video! I will receive my Studio Ultra same config in a few days, so this was amazingly helpful. Waves is a non-issue for me as well...I stopped using them years ago. Ozone 9 and RX7 are fantastic tools. I also use Gullfoss and Baby Audio Smooth operator. A lot. The rest is mostly the Logic standard plugs. For video, I use FCPX and Motion. Thank you again for making this video! 🎸

      @@LonelyRocker That is my plan - in fact, on my Mac Pro I have the TC Electronics POCO card that has excellent plug-ins that I haven't been able to use because they didn't update their drivers. I have a PT 003, and an MBox Pro. I will revert back to a system on the Mac Pro which enables the POCO, and use that for recording and then send that session to the Mac Studio for mixing when I update all my plug-ins.

    Thanks for the great video- I am on a similar journey. I’ve edited on Avid for over 25 years and hit the wall when I bought a Sony FX3. Avid couldn’t handle it on my Mac Pro trash can- not to mention the terribly limited graphics with the newer releases. I tried Premiere for a few months but kept running into basic start up problems and crashes. I’m now loving Resolve on my M1 IMac. I’ve ordered the Mac Studio- I won’t get it for another month. But I think you’ll enjoy Resolve.

    • @LonelyRocker
      @LonelyRocker  2 года назад

      A rare fellow Avid user ;) I am fully migrated to Resolve now and not looking back. Media Composer suddenly feels so ancient. I have theories why avid is always behind...I think it has something to do with their code. It feels like they have adapted "old" code over the years instead of architecting new solutions for modern systems. Lots of patchwork solutions. Just my theory. Enjoy your Mac Studio when you get it!

    Great vid Dan , as far as the Waves problem I plan to ditch them for the reasons you gave in the vid all in all it seems like the migration went pretty smoothly so no real scare stories here .If you have to change to Da-Vinci don't worry it's pretty intuitive especially to someone like me who has only recently got into video production, you'll be flying in no time

    I am thinking of going from an Intel MacBook Pro running Ventura 13.1 to getting a M1 Ultra Studio. Looks like I will have to a fresh install of all my Studio drivers and software. I have Waves Mercury but also over 100 plugs of UA. I was able to use Waves on Monterrey that previously installed on Catalina although not officially working with Monterrey. Once I upgraded to Ventura my millions of Wave plugs do not authorize. Good old WUP for $240 needed. I actually use UA plugs with my Apollo X interfaces 95% of the time. The price tag of the M1 Ultra Studio is actually a very fair price for what you are getting. Besides forking over the money I am dreading reinstalling everything. Over the years I have grown my studio and it is going to be an adventure. Great video.

      Thanks! Sounds like you are in a similar boat as I was. Running the old and new machines side by side made it much easier. I slowly phased out the old machine but kept it setup for when I needed the odd thing. Was pretty painless. And I have survived the Waves purge. I'm not going to lie, I miss some of their plugins but I have plenty of other great ones and my mixes have not suffered at all...

    Just upgraded from a cheese grater to a Mac Studio. The Studio is awesome. Biggest issues were a MIDI/USB issue which MOTU fixed w/ a beta driver update. Second issue was my older version of my DAW used SD2 audio files. All of them were corrupted in the migration. Had to fix the resource header. What a PITA. Bonus... I ditched UAD plugins. No more expensive dongles.

    Thanks a bunch for posting this video. I'm considering my upgrade plan as I have an old 2010 cheese-grater Mac (using Logic) that has been upgraded to it maximum over the years. I have a bunch of Waves plug-ins and really bummed about their upgrade practices. Sound Toy plug-ins were just recently upgraded to support M1 and it looks like they are not charging for an upgrade. Even though I have many waves plug-ins I find I'm only using a handful as I have actually went back to using more of the native Logic plugins. And I've always wanted FabFilter so I think I might be waving bye-bye to Waves (pun intended). And if I'm only using a handful of Waves that I really like, maybe I'll just buy licences for the few I want; that is when they are M1 compatible. And BTW: I use DaVinci Resolve free version - works great.

    • @LonelyRocker
      @LonelyRocker  2 года назад +2

      My pleasure! Glad you enjoyed this. Yeah, it's unfortunate about Waves. It's purely a cash grab. I didn't know that was the deal when I first got in. Guess you need to read the fine print. Too many great alternatives that don't do this. And sadly, even if you upgrade a few it may cost you almost as much as the whole thing. Good luck with your decision on upgrading!

    I gave up on waves along time ago because of that same issue I already bought the plug-ins I went to do an update and they told me I had to pay 200 and something dollars for it.
    Now I’m going through the same thing with UAD.
    I have a firewire satellite quad core.
    According to UAD they won’t support that.
    I’ve spent thousands of dollars not including the thousand dollar firewire satellite.
    We’re looking at about probably $4000 I spent on their plug-ins and also the fire wire satellite.
    Very frustrating very aggravating. But I will say this video helped me out a lot because I am going from a 2013 trashcan to a new M1 max studio.
    I have a lot of the same plug-ins that you do I’m glad to see that they work.
    Are used Logic Pro X as well.
    Love logic glad that there are no issues with that I know it is an Apple product but so I’ve had issues in the past.
    I’m going from Catalina to Monterey.
    Hopefully there won’t be any problems.
    Thank you again.

      @@LonelyRocker That'd be awesome, because 95% of the videos out there right now about the M1 Ultra is in relation to graphics/video performance and rendering ... I'm still on the fence myself between M1 Ultra and Max, with all the statements about the Max being more than enough for most. But on the other hand, if you deal with somewhat larger setups with heaps of virtual instruments (which I often do), then a solid CPU overhead makes sense, especially if this machine is gonna last 5, maybe even 10 years ;-) My current and dying Mac Pro 4,1 is on year 13, 11 of them with me

    • @LonelyRocker
      @LonelyRocker  2 года назад +1

      Here's my tip. 1. Spend within your means. 2. The M1 Max is more than enough to handle audio production. 3. Pushing the upgrades or going to the Ultra MAY future proof it a bit more. If you have a few extra bucks, consider the upgrades now because you can't add them later. If not, see point #1 :-)

    For pro tools to fix that all you need to do is watch and read what plug in it crashes on. Move that plug into the unused folder and start up again. Mine wouldn’t work because every Izotope plug-in caused ProTools to crash on the new platform.

    • @LonelyRocker

      Thanks Eric! I guess I whizzed through that part. I had both machines setup in parallel and slowly installed everything manually referencing what was on my old machine. I think, no matter what, there will be casualties if you are upgrading from a much older Mac. So if you have ongoing projects you may need to run two machines until you flush out the old issues. I don't think there is anyway. As I'm bailing on Waves, some older projects would have to be updated if I ever recisited them. Thanks for the Sub!!

    I finished yesterday my migration to your exact same Ultra configuration. My Daw is Ableton and everything was not looking too good with the plugins until I right click on the Ableton and choose Open with Rosetta. Its crazy…..even working with Rosetta 2 my projects, it use only 20% of the CPU when with my old top specs MacPro 2013 it was impossible without freezing tracks. And while playing, the fan of the Ultra is relax like drinking a margarita by the side of the pool. I had to pay yesterday $50 to Waves so I could open old projects that I didn’t want to loose. I also do animation and run a company related with the film industry. I don’t know any other software company with such and aggressive marketing and monetization strategy. or use time machine to backup the install on vmware and then restore to the 12.3 system

    Great video, unfortunately you probably missed a couple of recent deals by Waves to update the WUP for about $150-$180 , but that tells me that you probably don't use them that much so it's not a big deal. Many plugins like McDSP, or some of PA are charging $30 to $90 PER PLUGIN for the updates, so I don't see Waves being the worst company. It's a fair price to keep your stuff running on these ever changing OS and processor architectures. It's like a client asking you for revisions of his last 3 albums after 2 years, do you charge for the hours/days you spend working on the songs again? Hey Dan, are you having any issues with the m1 ultra and your Qcon’s acting up? My qcon pro x and XS extenders are now doing strange things with my Mac studio m1 max causing freezing at times. After many hours of trial and error testing and contacting Icon audio support, it seems the m1 pro, max and ultra are not playing nice with the hardware. And if doing firmware updates, you have to use an M1 or intel Mac only. These new macs won’t complete upgrades in imap.
    I found the usb cable on the Mac studio USB port being the connection issue. When the board freezes in logic, I have to remove the usb cable and plug it back in to the Mac studio and it works again right way, until it freezes again. Very odd. Just wondering if you are experiencing the same issue with the ultra? I’m on Monterey 12.3.1 and Logic Pro 10.7.4.

      @@LonelyRocker thanks Dan, after many hours I figured it out. The qCons for some reason will freeze up intermittently when directly connected to the Mac studio by usb. Must be a firmware issue. I actually did explain it. I didn't try to copy my old system because there is no point. Instead, I tested all of my gear and software to see what works and installed them one by one.. Catalina is so old. The Mac Studio currently ships with Monterey 12.3 and you can't install anything older on it. So you're best to set up the machines side by side and slowly install your software and gear on the new machine while keeping your old machine functioning for tasks that don't work and then decide what you want to do. I'm abandoning my trusty editing software because it just doesn't work on the new machine. With that big gap in OS's your only real option in my opinion is doing it how I explained it...good luck!

      You can do that on Mac too. But in both cases, if you update your OS you sometimes have to leave old plugs behind. Progress is not free 😂

    Waves is shooting themselves in the foot with that pricing scheme. People who honestly paid for thousands of dollars of Waves plugins get irritated at the pricing & just start using the Waves Complete torrents which are easily found. Plus a few plugin developers have bettered Waves offerings.

    • @LonelyRocker

      I guess they do it because they can. I’ve seen people in forums arguing in favour of this policy. I guess if you’re deeply invested you just drink the Kool Aid. I have no problem if you are offered feature upgrades. Like FabFilter does with each release. There is value in the upgrade. But other than re-skinning a few plugins and adding clunky zoomability, Waves has offered very little in terms of value. Who wants their courses? Not me. Way too many great alternatives out there. We’ll see how it goes. Thanks for your insight.

    10 years ago multiplatinum hit songs are made by old computers and they sound big and powerful so according to those facts nobody need an M1 computer to make hit songs the quality came from the knowledge you have about the technical aspect the signal path the converters and the science behind them the analog and the digital side and how your studio is build every single device count in out next device in out next device in out next device if you screw one step your audio signal will suffer without any chance of recovery not even with izotope RX or whathever plugin it's about understanding the digital logic and computer science and yes it's rocket science

      10 years ago more records were produced in big studios with proper engineers who knew what they were doing. Now everyone records at home and what is accepted as “well produced” is quite lower than before. That’s the times sadly!

      You are correct but I have A LOt of peripherals and I'd rather keep the TB4 ports free for Thunderbolt devices. I was just recommending the dock for those who have a lot of standard USB devices and why to avoid regular USB Hubs...

    • @glenallan6279
      @glenallan6279 2 года назад +1

      I hear you, but they are USB ports and for those who don't use a lot of Thunderbolt devices it would be good for them to realize those are options. Meaning by saying there are only 2 USB ports some less technical viewers might think they actually only have access to 2 USB ports. Also, unless you are getting the Ultra, the 2 ports on the front will not be Thunderbolt. So in the vast majority of cases there are 4 USB only ports on these.

      You'd think so, but I think in the arts a lot of people, even those with that kind of money, may not be super technically proficient outside of the space they focus on. Also, I don't think you are trying to do anything but help people, I just want those who don't know not to miss out on all the options they actually do have 😃.

      @@LonelyRocker Just a note, I did a clean install of Monterey (I was stuck on High Sierra for years!) onto my Trashcan and just the update to Monterey alone makes the machine nearly 50-100% faster with none of the old crashes I was getting than it was with the old bogged down High Sierra install. I am going to miss controllermate though (forgot to check that one first) but seemingly all my music software was either compatible or not necessary/easily substitutable. (Oh, well I do have upgrade Digital Performer, but I wanted to do that anyway). I even noticed my old slow 2014 dual-core i5 Mac mini with a hybrid drive suddenly got brisker and no more crashes when I updated from Mojave to Monterey, making it much more usable, so I guess OS updates (and clean installs when possible) can actually improve the machines even. Hope your Studio works out well, I'm drooling--I am resisting adding a sixth supported monitor to my trashcan just in case I finally get the Studio and have to decrease it back to five.

      @@LonelyRocker Like you I still have my old PowerMac G4 and 2006 Mac Pro. Regarding legacy apps, often my solution is the run the old OS within VMWare Fusion, which can work seemlessly, depending on the app (not great always for external devices though, depending on your planned implementation.). Ironically i still use my Apogee Duet Firework with Monterey. It is interesting how it selectively works fully with some apps and is handicapped with others (but still works well, nevertheless). Again, I am still crying about ControllerMate and have not found a suitable replacement (well, if I was saavy with Max/MSP I could do that way, but I barely have time to get to know that app well.). I should say that for a lot of apps that I used to use for quick and dirty editing (files I don't feel like opening up Digital Performer for) have all been replace with the opensource freeware Audacity now (only because I went down the Linux route on old PCs for fun a few years back, and realized that app works great on its Mac version too.)

    • @LonelyRocker
      @LonelyRocker  2 года назад

      Their business is rooted in broadcast but they have no presence in the creator world. I offered to help them but they fluffed me off. I can’t speak for Pro Tools but I feel like they have been simply patching their media composer code all of these years. It seems they can’t adapt it easily to OS updates while other company’s software just works. I finally got fed up and moved to Davinci. Is what it is....

  • @nnnnnn3647

    AVID lost a ton of editors. The older generation still uses Media Composer, but in 10 years they will disappear from the market.
    AVID commits suicide. Take many years to them to build a new version working on new hardware.
