That's a beautiful unit and I am glad to see it in such good hands getting the internal restoration it rightfully deserves. I would love to have a unit like this for music listening!
I love your restoration vids like this. Its awesome how these units can be brought back to life. You do some amazing work man. The Kenwood one was killer too. I hope to find an int amp like that SA 9800 eventually
These have a lot of components due to the preamp circuitry and other options. The power amp itself is just the two boards in the center that are next to the heatsinks.
I don't think I ever pinpointed the cause, because I was replacing several things at the same time during each stage of the disassembly. It was not possible to test after each individual part was changed.
Quality equipment from Pioneer. This one definitely had a defective electrolytic filter. Incredible design heatsinking. Too bad the loose wire discharge destroyed some components.
I can't remember, it's been too long LOL. The distortion was a combination of dirty switches and something else, if I remember right. I replaced a lot of components on each board without being able to test each time. More stuff like this coming up too. Pioneer SX-850, in about a week if all goes well :-)
I have great memories of this amplifier. My father had one. If anyone is selling one please let me know? I would buy it for him to use. Thank you, and great work here.
I don't know, if sy wrote it already. But any kind of electrical work in a such great device, always keep in mind, that capacitors with some thousand uF can seriously put out 2-500 A of short circuit current in case that something goes wrong, limited by their ESR only. If add all series resistance in a low resistance, high current path, we still deal with 50-100 A instantaneous current capable of easily destroying any kind of output devices. For this reason, one should consider two safeguard tips: for protecting primary side, use a series bulb of 40-100 W and for semiconductor's sake, put 10 ohm / 5W resistors (these will vary depending on class and circuit topology) in the path between high capacitor banks and amplifier board. The heating of these will indicate possible problem, and they will limit current to an absolutely safe level for almost all higher current stages.
I really like that amp! I need to get to my HK PM 665 one of these days, the phono inputs are dead and there is a random popping/ high pitched squeal in one channel.
Caig Faderlube is best for controls and switches. DeOxit D100 is next best. For the tuning cap, they do make some cleaner for that, but you might be able to fix it with simple compressed air. Sounds like you have dirt or corrosion between the plates. Also make sure none of the plates touch each other as they rotate. If the bearings are accessible on the ends of the tuning cap, a small drop of detergent free oil can help a bit too.
As for the speakers, I've put close to 500 Watts into them before when testing professional amps. As long as the signal is clean, they can take quite a bit of abuse. Though they are commercial grade cinema speakers.
i have a Sansui 350A that has some noisy transistors in it, hopefully i'll get around to fixing that at some point, will be my first venture into transistor replacement.
Last I heard, it was still working fine. This was done a year ago, so I don't have the old caps anymore. Or were you referring to the ones from the Kenwood? I'll be testing those next weekend, once I have my ESR meter back.
really love your videos, nice. I have SA9500 and while trying to remove the volume knob to clean its face plate i broke the volume pot. it's now turning more than 300 degrees, no more detented feeling and volume is all wrong. Do you thing it can be repaired? (me of course, an amateur)
I have a hk pt2300, sansui tu717 and a kenwood basic m2a with paradigm 11se deluxe speakers. I'd like to clean all the contols at least and the sansui has a scratchy tuner. Do I just use deoxtit? and on the tuning caps? thanks BTW if you blast AC/DC on any of the past 2 amps, they will make tweeters catch on fire. Not too many tweeters could handle these type of amps
I'm not really sure. I haven't bought anything new in at least 10 years LOL. The last receiver I bought new was my Sony STR-DE545, which i used for the DTS decoder and my home theater audio. That was back in 2000 I think.
Repairing vintage amps/receiver can be fun, but sometimes a pain in the arse. I'm having problem with my Yamaha CR-2040 receiver, A hum in the preamp. L and R shares the same voltage. I've measured the voltage that goes into the power amps. Sadly, I accidentally shorted the -60 volts with the wire that goes to the relay. I've have recapped the preamp and the psu. I've replaced 4 transistors in the psu. But the speaker relay won't click. Is the relay broken now? I'm sad :(
Did you manage to find what the problem was for the distorsion?I have a pre, that after an hour or so it started to do this(only on the left channel).I re-done some sodlering and it doesn't distort anymore.
1) Was the problem completely solved, after restoration was complete. 2) would be neat to see how many of those caps are still good and with in specs, that you removed.
Hi I have this amp also. Would also like to know if you would do this restore for mine and what would you charge ? This was really enjoyable to listen to you explain. Would really like to learn this stuff. How or where did you learn this technical stuff.
I'll be honest Maxx, I watch your repair videos over and over and each time, I get a little more. I appreciate your slant towards safety and quality - seldom found today - and you make it look so effortless. Question: where do you find your replacement transistors? I am in the process of repairing a noisy channel on a Pioneer QX-9900 needing transistors but the exact replacements cant be found. Is there a substitution site you use? - Thanks for all you do.
Any Getting Started in electronics books, there are many free PDF books The book I started on was by Forrest mims! Colin Mitchell has a great site "talking electronics" it has 5 free PDFs books IC to 555 to LED projects good luck
Hello there. I just got this amplifier from one of my friends. It's power transistors were blown off. He gave me the transistors and I replaced them. But, while opening the left power amp pcb it got short somewhere and there was a spark (2times) I took it lightly and replaced the power transistors. Now after watching your video I came to know that the relay tick in after 5secs... I remember when I switched it on just after receiving the relay ticked.. so, should I open the protection board now?
I have this amp, works well after some contact cleaner in the switches and pots - only problem is the display is very dim, about quarter of the brightness it should be :-( Sound is awesome though driving my Pioneer S910 speakers.
Hi Maxxarcade, I love watching your videos and your expertise in restoring vintage amps/receivers especially the SA-9800 amp. I just recently purchased a non-working Pioneer SA-9800 amp and I intend to have it restored by someone who has the full knowledge. Is their any chance that you can do the job for me? Where is your location? Can I contact you? Thanks.
wi ai'v got a NAD surround sound receiver AV-716 end from time tu time the left chanel stops working not oll the time I think onli wen its ghet's a litle bit hoter end thi only way make it work is to turn the volume up the components in side are oll gud its does not distort or everything else can you give me any idea where I should look for the problem
ppl think when they have a "vintage" amp a full recap resto is needed. why fix if it aint broke!? u lose value by swapping original parts. i have a pioneer sa9900 & sansui au717 all original work great. 30+yrs
I have an SA-9800 that needs this same job right now and I'd love to send it to him but after looking below, I see he hasn't answered anyone yet so I'll just go to AudioKarma.org and find someone. Great work though!
to me all the vintage electronics is the best of quality . when they made all the vintage audio they really cared about the work they did and now they just want to make a buck and they do not care all the new crap is just that crap all disposable garbage what a shame companies do not care the way they did in the past
Bonjour je suis à la recherche d'un potentiomètre de volume ampli Pioneer sa 9800 comment faire pour avoir un originale c'est une vraie galère pour le trouver j'aurais besoin d'un petit coup de pouce merci
Who was the woodworker? Is that info available? Have a minor case of envy going on here (LOL). Solid maple is much nicer than that horrendous factory vinyl wrap. Just saying...
That's a beautiful unit and I am glad to see it in such good hands getting the internal restoration it rightfully deserves. I would love to have a unit like this for music listening!
One thing is gauranteed, there is always alot of interesting music in your videos lol.
That was a very nice looking amp in great condition
You like Pioneer 70s equipment, you restored it yourself and had a beautiful custom wood case made, and you have a pony icon. Instant fan.
Sounds perfect! My grandpa has a old Marantz amplifer, he loves it for sure
I love your restoration vids like this. Its awesome how these units can be brought back to life. You do some amazing work man. The Kenwood one was killer too. I hope to find an int amp like that SA 9800 eventually

Those old amp are beautiful.
Sweet. Another job well done! I wish I could repair stuff like this as good as you! I tend to make things worse when I try to fix stuff like this.
Quality equipment from Pioneer. This one definitely had a defective electrolytic filter.

my 9900 sounds stunning, replaced the 1451's and regulator transistors on power supply, almost all electrolytic except filter caps.
Woohoo, nice resto!!!! I love watching these types of vids from you.
Nice work man👍🏼 I have the same amp. It still works but I want to restore it before it develops problems.
Wow! Nice unit! They sure don`t make them like they use to.
pioneer monster reciver 90 lbs or something 400 watts per ch wow there is allot of guts in that one nice job !
damn that is one great ass amplifier.
nice this is great i love your videos especially with old amplifiers

my school has one of these, pretty much the most powerful sound system in the department other than the main pa system! 800 watts of brute force!!
i have a Sansui 350A that has some noisy transistors in it, hopefully i'll get around to fixing that at some point, will be my first venture into transistor replacement.
What a beautiful amp
Absolutely! I really want one of these!
Some cleaners can eat plastic and ruin controls. Been there, done that. I stick to De-Oxit and Faderlube now.

No, but I'd like to some day. Even a 1280 would be sweet.
i wish they made 'em like that unit today!!!
Does pioneer still have parts i have a sa 8100 and a sx 980 i was able to get the last power transformer for them
that's one beautiful amp man :)

I have an SA-9800 that I bought in 1980, it could use what you did here, about how much would you charge?
I'm not the one who bought it so I'm not sure. It probably varies a lot depending on condition though.
I am torn between a pioneer SA 9800 & a vintage Luxman L 100. Does the pioneer give a warm sound that Luxman's are known for? What are your thoughts?
You did not state whether or not you were able to find the distortion on the left channel, and what was the cause. follow up.
The first song is Darren Tate - horizons from horizons 01 album.
I would like to learn how to do this kind of work.. can anyone suggest a good book or starting point?
Any Getting Started in electronics books, there are many free PDF books The book I started on was by Forrest mims! Colin Mitchell has a great site "talking electronics" it has 5 free PDFs books IC to 555 to LED projects good luck
I love it!! I really want one of these but they cost around $600 on ebay! Where did you get it?
Did you use Nichicon PW throughout the whole amp?
It belongs to my coworker, and he still has it.
will do thanks
Do you have a parts list for this restoration? Thanks for all your work!

I've been running about a year with a complete cap replacement on my SA-9800. Very happy with the results.

I found a pioneer SA9800 for $300 but still not working. I am confused to buying that machine .can repair it?
I have this amp, works well after some contact cleaner in the switches and pots - only problem is the display is very dim, about quarter of the brightness it should be :-( Sound is awesome though driving my Pioneer S910 speakers.
Check your power supply caps that powers the display. They could be on the display board or on the power supply.
Went to use this after some time and now it has a huge hum which is constant and not volume dependent.
HI! Love your videos. Can you tell me what kind of solder extractor you are using to remove the circuitry? Very Handy!
Thanks! It's a Hakko 808.
Maxxarcade
Thank you!
What bulb did you use to replace the piolet light above the switch ?
Hi Maxxarcade, I love watching your videos and your expertise in restoring vintage amps/receivers especially the SA-9800 amp. OK thanks I was desperate and used something like CRC Electrical Cleaner, I probably wreck the controls

sounds sweet
Clean the potentiometers (volume wheel), might be dust collecting inside them.
i have same system the main caps are 5 pin where to get them
1979-1980 I think.
Have you ever come across any pioneer sx-1980 units?
do you have list of all caps
is there any graphics card for dell optiplex gx520 mini tower
do you know where i can find a list of capacitors needed for the sa-9900?
The Internet try google
+mojito shake
I have a list somewhere.
***** oh that would really help. May I please get it?
I'll see what I can do.
Send me your email.

I hate those era pioneers ive got a dead tape deck and working receiver sitting in my room.
Located up North. Will charge £150 for Labour plus parts.
Do you still have this amp?
where are you located?
how much do you charge to do a recap on a Pioneer sa9800?
dj tiesto adagio for strings
cool
17:30 title song ?
Who was the woodworker? Is that info available? Have a minor case of envy going on here (LOL). Solid maple is much nicer than that horrendous factory vinyl wrap. Just saying...
you need to hoard some old guitar amps and other electronics to steal parts out of
Movement of your camera is crazy... It's making me sick.
If this video is a "lost video" why is it uploaded if it is "lost"? See what I did there
What's the song playing at the end
