    UPDATE 2: I finally purchased this lens in July of 2019 after an experience on location that subscribers might be interested to hear.
    I was shooting a Channel 4 Series in Caerphilly, Wales, overlooking the castle. It was late afternoon, the sun was setting, the scene was heavily back-lit and I need to compress the distance between my subjects and the background to bring the castle into the frame, so I put on my EF 70-200mm f/2.8L II lens. The shot was beautiful, full of flare and although this washed out the contrast somewhat it worked narratively to create the warm, evening look I was trying to achieve.
    At the end of the scene, I needed a wide shot, so I changed to my CN-E 18-80mm. Suddenly, pow! All the contrast returned, the colours were warmer and the flare was more subtle and beautifully rendered. It was at that moment I decided I now needed the CN-E 70-200mm lens.
    Fast forward to March 2020 when I was DOP on a two camera McDonald’s shoot in London. My C300 MKII was A-Camera using the CN-E 18-80mm lens, the B-Camera was a Black Magic URSA shooting close-ups of the cooking scene. The Director wanted tighter shots on the B-Cam than the 30-90mm lens was providing so naturally we decided to switch to the 70-200. I suggested we use my CN-E 70-200mm lens but the B-Camera operator owned a very nice EF 70-200mm f/2.8L III which he was keen to use. After the swap myself, the Director and the camera operator stood back and looked at the two camera shots on the monitor. The B-Camera now looked washed out, the colours were cooler and it appeared softer, so we changed to the CN-E version and again, pow! Back came the contrast, warm colours, nice flare and despite being T4.4 a beautiful bokeh that to my eye was more pleasing than the EF lens. Looking at the numbers one might think the EF lens had the edge but real-world tests have taught me that the extra investment in the CN-E zoom lenses does pay off in the captured images! These two compact zooms will be perfect companions for my soon to be purchased C300 MK III. Do yourself a favour…
    PS: The Canon 2X extender on this lens turns it into a beautiful 140-400mm T9.0 zoom!

      Does the 18 - 80 also have a 2x extender? And will you buy it in 2020? Thanks

      @@cncmediapro Hey. I already have the 18-80, bought that first back in 2017. Sadly it doesn't have a built-in extender and despite what I thought when making this video it isn't compatible with Canon's extenders. All the same, it's a great lens!

      Ended up here in 2023 after perusing affordable cine zooms, ha, you know how it goes. Interesting to hear some more objective and professional experience compared to most stuff you can find on RUclips so thank you for that. I shoot a lot of events/actuality etc, and the 18-80 is appealing to me even now despite being 'old'.

    I agree on all points. When I was younger we had amazing cameras, they were expensive, but we had proper servo lens setups, proper par focal. Then DSLR world came... Everyone went the cheapest route to an image. Result, the world is now filled with DP's. Now we are heading back to an era where the DP's need to get the real gear again and stop using the Photo lenses to do a job that was meant for real video glass. Nice video.

    Heck yea man! I have this same setup with the 18-80 cine zoom. I also am saving for the 70-200 cine zoom. A bit expensive, but as you said, it is a video lens! Not a photo lens. I love these lenses. I shot a short film all hand held last week in downtown Hollywood with this setup in this video, except didn’t use the shoulder rig. Held it all day. Loved it. Can’t wait to get the 70-200. These 2 lenses with the C300 M2 is a deadly combo. If ya need some bokehness, get a 24 or 35mm T1.5 prime lens and your good to go. That 3 lens combo will cover most productions out there. Great video.

      Hey Alan, yes they are great lenses. I have a 24, 35 and 50mm primes to complete the set. too. Peter

    When using this on the c300 mark II body do you need a lens support?

    • @PeterDemetris
      @PeterDemetris 2 года назад

      Not when using the locking EF mount. For the standard EF mount I would recommend a lens support for hand held shooting but for gentle tripod shots I think you could live without one.

    Thank you for the video. What manual focus are you using? I'm using the LANPARTE®️ Shoulder Mount Rig for my BMURSA MINI. I intend on purchasing the CANON 70-200 Servo Zoom lens for my BM Ursa MINI 4.6K tomorrow. I shouldn't have any compatibility issues, right?

    • @astevens101
      @astevens101 6 лет назад +1

      I rented an 18-80 on my UM 4.6k, if your firmware is up to date you should be golden, it powers the servo from the ef mount without external power.

    I'd love to see how the EF 70-200 looks when zoomed, even though the CN-E is a much better lens (and 4 times the price)
    A comparison would've been awesome

    Hello, is the Canon 70-200 worth buying? Can I zoom on airplanes flying for example? Or is it a non-zoom lens? Thanks

    • @PeterDemetris
      @PeterDemetris 2 года назад

      It's a terrific zoom lens, and I've used it for shooting aircraft where the servo zoom is invaluable.

    When do you use a Servo Zoom in a TV production?
    And T 4,4 on an aps-c sensor is not my cup of tea. I really like the EOS Cinema line from Canon, but I might go with Sony, because of the Fujinon Cine Zooms.

    • @AlanJMash
      @AlanJMash 6 лет назад +1

      Mata Hari - an APS-C sensor is a little smaller than a Super 35 sensor. Like 2-3mm difference. T4.4 is perfect because the C300 M2 is very fast camera itself. Those Fuji lenses are sweet though at 2.8.

      Hi Mata, as mentioned in the review I used the servo zoom to quickly change focal lengths, not so much zooming in vision as such. Peter.

      @@WhitehouseVideo Happy to hear my bumbling video review helped! I have both lenses now and they are amazing tools. Used both of them on a shoot yesterday and the shots look superb. I'm confident the 1.4x adapter will work on the 70-200mm lens.

    Interesting review and I would love both lenses, I am still using my Canon C300 Mk1 and use it for BBC documentaries and corporate work .You mention towards the end that the argument as to which camera you use for television is over and . I totally agree and have had this argument many times but you try telling that to these independant TV copies who at the moment insist you have a Sony FS7 just because it's the "in" camera this year. Don't forget the Canon C300 is still a stonkng good camera and I much prefer the colours off my camera as opposed to the Sony FS7. A quick question what shoulder rig have you got and what battery adapter are you using. Cheers Paul Walker

      Hi Paul, glad you like the review. It's a Zacuto VCT Pro shoulder rig and the batteries are Hawk Woods grippers which I bought from ProAv. Peter D.
