Just a quick addendum - I installed the most recent Windows 11 update this evening and that appeared to address the issues I was having with Airlink working. Half Life Alyx looks amazing on this.
realting to the psvr and other headsets actually from what i saw yesterday when i was looking at a quest in store and a ps5vr (my brother got one) the psvr was only about 40-50€ cheaper compared to the quest3 128gb wich has far more functions and in my mind is superior as ive also seen somebody use theyre quest3 for psvr
I love the Quest 2 and look forward to getting a Quest 3. The IPD adjustment is the improvement I'm most looking forward to since the Quest 2 is just a little too narrow. The facial interface is my biggest concern though. I've got a very large head and haven't seen any wide interface for the Quest 3 yet.
The reason why many people do not need their glasses when using VR is because of something called focal length. Normally your eyes focus on objects far and near by moving the lenses in your eyes back and forth, but in a VR headset this distance is constant. Headsets can vary slightly on what this distance is but typically it’s around 3 feet. That means that however well your eyes perform at 3 feet in real life is how clear your vision in the headset will be no matter how far away you think you’re focusing. Most people with mild prescriptions do not need prescription inserts and many don’t need to wear their glasses in the headset. Nobody really tells you this cause where’s the money in that ?
I used to have a Quest 2, but I experienced some eye fatigue and also found it a bit too heavy for comfort. I didn't really explore that much software, but for me it seemed there wasn't anything right up my alley at the time. It did offer a pretty impressive VR experience though, and being an older dude who tried out some of the very first VR "rigs" in the 90'ies, it's cool to experience the tech slowly maturing. Could be I should give it another go, the mixed reality and enhanced play space features sounds like nice improvements over the Quest 2.
Mixed reality is really cool, but keep in mind it needs a well lit area to look decent. Theres a pretty big difference in how things look based on room lighting. For me, the mixed reality stuff and improvements with setting boundaries makes a huge difference. The games still need to be updated to take advantage of the new GPU performance.
I appreciate you sharing your visual impairment in your video. I’m near sided and wearing my glasses inside the headset leads to smudges quickly on my glasses. I would like a setting for visually impaired users to get us by with out glasses. Simply using bold and font sizes would be enough.
you can also get a Virtual Desktop app and just play your VR Steam games wirelessly too! Pretty neat, right? (you can also do that without an app via standard quest airlink, but it is annoying and has some minor issues + less settings
2:43 You have this backwards, you should always set the VR headset on your face and then adjust the tension on the back of the Elite strap, then adjust the tension on the top with the adjustable Velcro strap.
Despite the original quest3 strap, it is not comfortable as 3rd party starps there is one thing that original starp can do and other 3rd party straps can't. And this is when you want to lie down on the bed or lean to the sofa and watchig movie ls this is way more comfortable than other straps 😁
Lon, does the meta quest 3 support steam link? I would be interested in playing games from my steam, epic games and gog games library. I wonder if both steam link and nvidia geforce now supports vr, ar and xr for pc gaming. I wish google made a modern google glasses catered towards the consumers at an affordable price running full versions of android with access to the google play store and being able to sideload android apps.
Better the 512GB because games are becoming MUCH larger due to the more powerful chipset. Also the resale value will be much bigger, down the line. Elite strap much better from third parties.
Great review , thanks . Although i would like to see a group of glass wearers test the headsets & report . Particularly those with bifocals & multi focus lenses.
I tried the quest 3 and wasn’t impressed with it. There’s a lack of games or apps that showed the new capabilities off. Comfort level was terrible too, I could feel the straps and the headset pressing against me.
I'm surprised the warping of the MR didn't bother you. It's one of the more irritating aspects to me, since I mostly use the cameras for utility (seeing what is on my phone, talking to someone else)
Right direction but it needs to be smaller and less ski goggle like, combined with more graphics power and camera definition. It always feels like Meta does half hearted attempts and never really uses their financial muscle to deliver something that will wow people.
The main issue with vr is full length games. All the ones i play feels like tech demos. If they would make full games like they did with skyrim and fallout 4. It would be a different story. Even ps vr 2 is having issue with games.the hours i played in skyrim fallout 4 and REVII. And i think having REVII, REVIII and REIV just on ps vr is doing more harm for vr industry.
I think with the Quest 3, that will start to change. A lot of games were still taking the Quest 1 into account. Maybe a year ago, we started getting a lot more Quest 2 only games. Development takes time. Both Assassin's Creed Nexus and Asgard's Wrath 2 will be the two big heavy hitters that are full length games this holiday season. There are also bigger games like Stride Fates, Wanderer, Arizona Sunshine 2, Vampire the Masquerade (It looks like it could be a fuller game), and maybe Bulletstorm. I think the Quest 3 is comparable to the PSVR1, so I don't see why it can't output fuller games. We just need more AAA and even AA support.
I have a 64gb quest 2, yeah most games only take up 10gb at most, but modded beat saber took up 30gb with around 500 songs. This means I had a very limited amount of space for other games. Unfortunately meta's cloud save functionality was not very reliable and I lost a lot of save game data when uninstalling games to make space for new games. Lost a complete run of Resident Evil 4 to it. They may have gotten better since, but I decided I don't want to deal with that and went with the 512gb this time around. It's not a good value, but since there's no expandable storage, I'd rather just pay it up front and not have to worry about space down the line.
No oled no buy, as lcd should never be in any vr HMD, and oled should always have been the min type of panel, unless you think vr should look like you are color blind with glacoma.

Nice review. Good to see coverage of VR and you seem to be very attuned to the tech. Thanks!
GREAT review Lon. KUDOS. Even better than all dedicated Quest youtubers I've seen!
I’ve found there’s not much in the way of a general consumer focus on many VR reviews. These do really well on Amazon.

Hey lon if you do a follow up can you talk more about the software side? Such as the OS itself and the experience using sideloaded applications?

I've been using air bridge and it works.
Great review, thanks! And thanks for testing the Air Link feature as well.

You should do whatever works best for you.
You see better because the lenses included (covering the displays) help your presbyopia.

Gonna try it at future
I'm a bit confused with the airlink would it not be better to have hdmi connected with each other with the pc?
Or is there some sort of link cable?
Keep up the great work

#Gamestop said there will be a Game in 2024 that is 130gv so yea I bought the 512 on

Virtual desktop is better. Just use that.
This wasn't owned by meta I would own one.
Posted from your Google account 😅
At least you don't have to have a Facebook account now, so not terrible
I must have a broken unit, the MR looks like garbage
