Shawn, you are one of the best teachers I've seen, you understand how our bodies react and create videos that show what the viewers are doing wrong very simply. The images stick in the mind grass whip, snuff box, ckementime, etc. Thank you sir.
Sir, I'm a 73 year old, playing once a week and little or no practice in between rounds. I play for enjoyment, not competition, and I watched your video 2 nights ago. I played yesterday and was thinking about your comments on the grip. I have a strong left hand but my right was getting weaker, something I hadn't noticed until I remembered this video. I got my right stronger per this video, and was hitting the daylights out of the ball. Thanks for the easy to understand advice, and I need to remember that, if something in my swing goes awry, check the basics: stance, ball position, and grip. My compliments on a great, understandable video.
I am absolutely new to golf and just was like 5 times on a driving range. I am so happy that you mentioned all mistakes I make from thinking the club has to be leveled to the ground to a too tight grip... :') I will definitely will try your tips next time, thanks Shawn. A well deserved sub!

Yes….THIS !!!! After numerous years following and umpteen repeat viewings of assorted early vids, another sudden epiphany realizing the weight of the impacts good and bad. Toe up prevents releasing into ground as much (shaft torque will throw toe more downwards…I can confirm from the problem side ! LOL). Might even promote more advantageous spin too !? The angled club grip in hand does not so much literally restrict actual wrist cock but reduces that natural 90 degrees arms/shaft angle down to around 60 degrees (maybe even less)…so (imo) reduces overall length of backswing arc and the two hinge trebuchet effect Shawn has often illustrated and therefore less speed and power !)…the steeper that grip angle in hand the more angle loss. Other indirect benefits I am perceiving upon completion of viewing Having your hands more beneath you can generate more power (twisted spiral physics…) And…promotes a flatter swing plane which can also generate more speed AND in my case…(right swing, left eye dominant), it allows me to SEE ball way way better longer into my backswing as my eyes are not obstructed by my arm/shoulder taking club back…that is HUGE for me because otherwise…a) I will tend to shorten length of my backswing which is immediate power loss….or b) tilt my head which in turn changes spine angle and I hit down on the ball ! (not certain if the improved visibility is a direct result of lower hands…or because a little further from the ball and not so steep…or maybe a bit of both). Much appreciated as always. Shawn loves to talk so it often demands repeat viewings but you eventually realize that few words were wasted and that what you needed was there all along…still the best. Hey Shawn I love your videos, I'm subscribed and like everyone, honestly you have helped me gain so much yardage and confidence in my iron game but when it comes to my driver I struggle so much and have no confidence with it, I am a right handed golfer and I hook the ball way left that my drive goes 200 yards and 50 yards left
Have you seen the “throwing series” on our premium channel? Where we compare the throwing drill from wedges all the way up to objects that are longer than the driver?
I watch a lot of Shawn's videos but there's only so much one can remember. Had been snapping my fairway woods and hybrids...watched this video...went to the range and could only laugh and say to myself "Shawn you magnificent bastard!" I look forward to practicing my fairway woods now. Thanks.
Thank you for this video, I have been having issues gripping the club and now trying the way you suggest how to grip the club it feels more comfortable in my left hand (Right handed golfer). Thank you
Guess I'm going to need to work on this far more. I'm a 5 handicap and always looking for more distance. The grip you described, very strong. Of course I over draw or hook the daylights over of the ball. Perhaps leaving things alone is what I should do. Distance for Accuracy, no thanks.
Well, are you feeling that you are getting peak speed past the ball and into the direction you want to start it? Of yes, then back off the grip strength! 😀👍
@@golflessons You're the man Shawn. I definitely feel more power at impact as well as it equating to distance. You are correct of course. I need to back off the grip a bit. I believe you're grip and swing thought will get me hitting it further. Just need to work on the feel and let it go!
It would be entertaining, informative, and verification to see you and the crew playing anything from a hole to full rounds. Not to mention bringing out that competitive fire is going to make good content
This is fantastic, I love the passion you have with golf... you can tell from the way you speak it's pure fun for you. I have been playing for 2 years and still suck, but not giving up. Interestingly I always felt the strong grip was natural but I spent months experimenting with more neutral. Your explanation of the grip with the hammer makes so much sense. What are your most recommended drills I can do to improve? My issue is I hit the ground too hard and have trouble grazing the grass (unless I do a half swing... my chipping game is great). I think I have a more stiff stance like you showed I we shouldn't do. Will practice this, any other recommendations? Thanks for all the content!
Hey Brandon! Glad to be of help! If you are looking to stop experimenting and get into a way of learning that is free of defects, check out our premium channel at www.wisdomingolfpremium.com (just $9.95 per month) and start with the “beginner series” which is super clean and easy and will hit the reset button. Then you hit the ground running with the rest, all subjects golf, from putter to driver, with the BEDROCK FUNDAMENTALS that should have been there in golf to begin with. All the best! Shawn
I can't help noticing that your rotation is so...pure. You could put a pencil on the toe of your club and it would scribe an accurate elipse. Along with the fact that I too was palcing my club flat (wrists extended), I need to video my "turn" to mimic yours. I'm pretty sure that if I was to put that pencil on my club's toe, I won't like what I see, assuming I see the same swing twice?!?
Haha, that is a cool comment Shug! You gotta see the “arc-blur” and “unstoppable momentum” videos on our premium channel at www.wisdomingolfpremium.com and you will absolutely see how he “pencil on the end of the club” analogy you just used is SPOT ON!! Then see “arm swing vs body turn” video (I have a couple on youtube as well for you) to understand the underlying natural way we are wired for this.
I've been holding my club the way you say not to for quite and few years and I've been struggling the past year. I'm gonna try this and see if it help me!
"That's not a way to play golf... 🙄" Geez oh Man, such painful truths!!! I find the Internet to be weird when people talk directly to me and they don't know me. I can't wait to practice this, as it makes perfect sense and can be proven in my swing. It will also eliminate a thought process or two in my backswing, which means it should somewhat simplify things 🤘🤘
@@golflessons I've watched close to a dozen of your videos now! I don't live anywhere near a driving range, but I have a net in the backyard. Do you have videos on how to practice without a monitor or being able to see actual ball flight?

Shawn, it's kinda funny you espoused Moe Norman in a previous video. There is no doubt that Moe is acknowledge to be one of the best modern day ball striker. Yet, the trade mark of the one plane swing is the Ulnar deviation and high hand aka "The Rod" as Moe would say. Complete opposite to what you are teaching here with the lower hands and then the dig at the body rising - well, the one plane the body doesn't rise (Moe does not) as the trail foot is down and rolling at impact - thats what keeps the spacing. The 2 plane swing, you have to create space and those who are unable have to make space by going up - as you pointed out. The one plane is totally different but it's just the irony you would use Moe. Other than that - good stuff, still enjoy your videos especially the cut the grass for chipping everything. Thanks
One thing that I didn't think was a problem for me, might have been this whole time! And it's setting up with the handle too high and making the leading edge flat to the ground. I changed the position and I hit the ball better.
This is the 3rd time I have watched this lesson thoroughly and each time I have picked up one more piece of the puzzle! 1 My grip - strong, flexible and tight really helps me to “cement” my arm/club unit.2 Cutting through the stem helps focus my mind on the real task, compress the ball and send my energy in the correct direction. 3 The two ball strike, for me, is proof of concept - long, focused swing, extensive contact, and the ball strike is about 4”in front of the first ball! This is how to compress a golf ball - effortlessly!
Shawn....I switched to Jumbomax grips this year to help cope with my hand arthritis. As part of that switch I'm now scratching my head over where to position the thumb on my lead hand since the grips are so much thicker. I've been experimenting but haven't settled. I was looking at how you held the hammer and the thumb looks like it goes down the side of the grip instead of the top of the grip. Your thoughts?
Could you please explain what happens just before the club makes contact with the ball.seems like the up and down wrist motion must convert to a aft to forward motion.
Thanks Shawn. You can really feel this when practicing chipping; especially if you use the bounce. The proper grip will help shallow the club and exposes more of the club's sweet spot. Thanks for this great lesson.
Thank you Sean, boy are you STEEP at the top, but you get on plane - I'd be interested what's behind that choice! How does that work for you. Compression right? What are your thoughts on having a much wider swing and still getting compression? Thanks for any pointers.
I love your content keep it up! I’m new to the game only been playing a few months. Question- Your golf swing and stance seems so much more athletic and dynamic then most teachers and you tubers out there. Do you have a video up that can teach your swing?

Hi Shaun, I've had a cupped left wrist at top of my backswing for as long as I have played and although I have always been a single figure player, my iron striking was never as I wanted it to be. However, since watching this video and changing my grip my striking has improved immensely. I now "remove the cup" when holding the club in umbrella mode by slightly changing my wrist angle. This gives me a "flat" left wrist throughout my swing rather than trying to manipulate the clubface in backswing/downswing.
Shawn, since switching to your methods, my right knee has started to swell. I’m sure I’m twisting it or something on the backswing. Any videos addressing the proper working of the knees hips etc.? Thanks.
I’ve got to say the strong grip looks great with you Sav & Moo etc but I’ve tried it so many times just can’t get it to work for me. I seem to strike the ball better when I just naturally grip the club feels more comfortable
This video is not weak or strong, just solid! 😝. Just deliver at the target and let the club release freely and see what works best for you; if the grip is too strong, you feel the need to hang on and not strong enough you will feel the need to manually close the face at impact!
awww man....I thought the ball was the dandelion and the stem was under the ball, and therefore had trouble visualizing it. Now that I understand the dandelion stem is in FRONT of the ball, it's clear to me and my practice swings a few seconds ago appear to confirm that.
Love the video information. I do have a question about the top of your back swing. It appears to me that you "cross/over the line" at the top. Am I looking at it the wrong way? Can you explain the top of the back swing position?
@@golflessons Thanks! I watched the video and think I understand. One PGA tour pro is famous for redirecting the back swing and that is Jim Furyk. Personally I had trouble hooking/over hooking the ball. I think I have corrected that and now mostly hit a straight ball. Is there a problem with hitting a straight ball? I can force a draw or a fade when I try to but am not using the best techniques I'm sure.
@@sfink16 yes, and also Matt Wolff is another example and the key is to never FORCE ANYTHING in the swing; we have a cool series on our premium channel called “arc-blur unstoppable momentum series” where you feel like you are just a witness to the weight of the arms and club pounding through the ball and into the direction you want to start the ball.
Hi Shawn. Thank you so much for the great videos, I started playing golf on November 2020 and have been struggling with coming over the top. These videos really help. I just wanted to ask, should our hands be low like this with our driver too? Thank you so much

Yes, what Brushymtngolfer says; get an intermediate point, deliver your action in the direction you want the ball to start through this intermediate point. See “throw the club straight shawn clement” and “why you cannot line up properly shawn clement”
Here s an observation Shawn, that has me wanting to video my swing again. Your right elbow seems almost seated into your ribs through your swing/rotation. You create what appears to be a tunnel in close to your body for your arms to travel through. This is NOT how my swing looks, at all. I know that feel isn't always real but in my efforts I am so focused on rotating that my fire my arms out trying to create this "perfect" arc. I have SO much work to do!
Way less work than you think Shug! See all my “throwing the club shawn clement” videos and then see “predict perfect contact and direction shawn clement” and “how to put the ball in the way of your swing shawn clement” and keep your eyes open for this Saturday’s video on when the trail arm should extend in the swing!

Sounds like the distance between you and the ball with the longer clubs is too close to the ball or the swing is getting too flat...see “predict perfect contact and direction shawn clement” and the “distance to ball with all clubs shawn clement”
Hi Shawn! Do you recommend the strong grip with an iron swing as well? Other videos show a closed club face with the strong grip, then tilt to straighten it out at address. Thanks!!
Hey Jared! See “predict perfect solid contact and direction shawn clement” and realize that it is a bit different with everyone; then see “weak grip vs strong grip shawn clement golf wrx” for the full gist on that.
Moe played his whole competitive career with overlapping grip; it only looked like single plane from down the line, but when he swung towards you, you could see the 2 planes plain as day…
I considered Hogan’s grip that is drawn in his book, “Five Lessons” as the gospel. I’ll have to try this. What about the left wrist. Does it matter if it is cupped or not? Will that affect accuracy?
Human anatomy is built for this! When waiting for a pitch in baseball, aren’t the wrists cupped? Tennis, fishing, hammering, all cupped (which is simply hinged on the anatomical snuff boxes in our book and cupped would be collapsed because if one is cupped, the other is bowed)
Golf grip - Would love to see a closer look how you grip it with your left hand (as a righty), because it seems to me it runs along the first joints to the palm which kind of reminds me of a ten-finger grip in some ways. Good stuff as always, thanks!
See “hit a honkin’ draw to hit straight shawn clement” and “predict perfect contact and direction shawn clement” For most, it should be slightly to moderately closed.
Your swing is way more upright than what is taught by most professionals. It looks like an anti-hook swing. Most golfers are slicers and a flatter swing plane promotes a better clubhead path through impact.
This is what they would have you believe…you should see the improvements around here; 1 to 3 clubs more with irons, towering long irons, bombs with driver, gorgeous touch with wedges…Bubba, Justin Thomas, Brooks, Jack Nicklaus, Dustin, and so many more!! You want to tech them a flat swing?😝
@@golflessons - Went to RUclips and looked at their swings. Justin Thomas swings along his shoulder line which is flat. Hogan was flat. Snead was along his shoulder line. Mickelsaon is along his shoulder line. Dustin Johnson is just slightly above his shoulder line as is Koepka. Nicklaus was upright (plane above shoulder line). Bubba Watson is upright. Your swing is more upright than all of theirs. I went and looked again and figured out what it is that makes your swing look different. Every one of the pros we mentioned except Watson has his hands above or behind his right shoulder at the top of his backswing. Yours hands are are in front of your right shoulder between your right shoulder and your neck almost over your right ear. ***By the way, your lesson on keeping the hands relatively low is good. The grip is at right angles to the palm. Allows way more wrist mobility and clubhead speed.
@@bobpegram8042 justin Thomas, jack n, Dustin Johnson, phil m, are all upright golfers . I could name many more. Shawn's swing is very sound and repeatable and he can hit the ball 300 yards right or left hand. His teaching reaches gofers of all abilities and age. He's one of the best teachers I've seen and I've studied Back through to vardon.
@@golflessons I always used to fight cutting aqcross the ball. When I went to longer clubs that stopped. I can now hit the ball without contorting my swing. Admittedly, my body proportions are unusual - very high waist and average length arms, swing along my shoulder line.
For those who use more of a single plane swing, with the arms being more extended at address, should there be a feeling of tension along the tendon then runs along the thumb to the wrist? Also, great work as always Shawn, you're the only recommended source for golf if anyone asks!
Thanks Chris! What is important is the secure hold and solid posture over the ground to be able to stay with the shot; everyone has different range of motion in the wrists and Moe would be the first to tell you to stay strain free in your actions and let the swing go to your target. Moe loved the secure grip and stayed beautifully with his shots for his anatomy. Maybe a video in there to help golfers understand if they are single plane or dual plane...🤔
@@golflessons Fair enough, thanks for the prompt reply, your professionalism and willingness to help others is unparalleled. I'll give this tighter grip a try at the range. Thanks Shawn! You Rock!
There is a lot of confusing info online. For instance, what you are saying is counter to the way Moe Norman set up. ( Arguably the best ball striker of the golf ball of all time). I also noticed that Savanah raises her arms just before her backswing very much in the position Moe starts from. I'm not saying you are wrong, just confused.
Yes! And this can work for many! I am talking about STATIC POSTURES that are too tall and not dynamic enough; Moe was THROUGH THE BALL TOWARDS HIS TARGET!!
why are we always told to keep our hands under our chin then? i need a little more athletic stance as you illustrate... will take this to the course tomorrow! Thanks again Shawn!
Any kind of “body part positioning” tends to backfire as we are terrible at it. We cannot see ourselves. So we need a solid TASK to deliver through to the target with and let the body parts find their place to accommodate the task. That is where you will find your swing.
Hey Shawn, when picking a intermediate point do I line my feet line up to the target first then pick a point in front of my club face? Absolutely love your videos #leftynation
Hey Johnny Boy! Stand down the line, pick a spot first; then you set up and feel that you are lining up the flow of momentum with that direction. See “why you can’t line up properly shawn clement”
It is physically impossible to have lead A GREAT GRIP and have lead arm and shaft in alignment; Find a video of Moe Hitting towards a camera and you will see 2 planes
I always start getting a hole in my glove first in the heel pad of my left hand under my pinkie finger. What am I doing wrong? My preshot routine I always hold the club in my left hand up like an umbrella while I pick out my target and intermediate point.
@@golflessons Re-watching the video I see my problem now. I need to grip down on the club a little lower like you do. I can't see the butt end of my grip sticking out when I grip it like I do when you grip it.

after swing analysis, Trackman tells me that my attack angle is consistently -6 degrees and launch angle is 10-12---is this a problem that I need to address?---I still have a problem hitting my driver more than 220 yds with 95 clubhead speed :(

@Tyler Hawk haha, nice! 😝😂; he has a lot of great things going on in his swing and I agree with a boat load; the problem is that he is approaching it like a bucket with a bunch of holes in it and he is running circles trying to block each hole when he could take care of them all with one great task. Biomechanics experts are body part manipulators that have not realized the brain works in a very different way!
@Tyler Hawk . I am a 'single planer', but I think Bryson's new driver method has wandered away from single plane. But hey, he's won 6 PGA tournaments so he must be doing something right. :)
Why does this video go against everything other instructors teach? Also, note that if you hold the club grip like a hammer you are in an exceedingly strong grip and likely to close the face at impact producing wild pulls and hooks.
I am so conflicted. I love your mental approach Shawn, but on the other hand Todd Graves is one of the most accurate golfers I have ever seen. And being the 'apprentice' to the master Moe Norman, he advocates 'weak left hand' with 'strong right hand'. Moe called it 'the rod and claw'. You are both genuinely great golfers, coaches and human beings. It's just so annoyingly befuddling that you have such extremely conflicting views on grip. Still luv ya tho, lol.
Well that is the thing; if the anatomy of a student fits something that “looks like” single plane, he is going to get that and I am just as comfortable teaching that; this video addresses an issue I see regularly on my teaching deck. What I teach is the HUMAN MACHINE ON PLANET EARTH WITH TASK method and whatever fits the person’s anatomy and mind best, that is what we are going with. I will never pigeon hole anyone into any method to save face.

Other indirect benefits I am perceiving upon completion of viewing
Having your hands more beneath you can generate more power (twisted spiral physics…)
And…promotes a flatter swing plane which can also generate more speed
AND in my case…(right swing, left eye dominant), it allows me to SEE ball way way better longer into my backswing as my eyes are not obstructed by my arm/shoulder taking club back…that is HUGE for me because otherwise…a) I will tend to shorten length of my backswing which is immediate power loss….or b) tilt my head which in turn changes spine angle and I hit down on the ball !

Right on Zach! 👍😀
Great video Shawn. Thank's.........
It looks like alot of my problem has been my grip.
It certainly worked earlier on the range. A Great tip Shawn Thank You 👌
So excited to start working in this. Very amature golfer, so hopefully it won't take me too long to change over to this style.
You will enjoy this a lot! The grip feels so solid and the compression with the ball is BLISSFUL!!
I need to try that two ball drill. Thanks!
Great explanation!!! Need to go practice!!
I am not subscribed to your premium channel but I have watched your other videos where you show and describe throwing your club.
I watch a lot of Shawn's videos but there's only so much one can remember. Had been snapping my fairway woods and hybrids...watched this video...went to the range and could only laugh and say to myself "Shawn you magnificent bastard!" I look forward to practicing my fairway woods now. Thanks.
😏😎☺️😝😀👍
Thank you for this video, I have been having issues gripping the club and now trying the way you suggest how to grip the club it feels more comfortable in my left hand (Right handed golfer). Thank you
Great stuff! 👍😀👌💪
@@golflessons Also MOVE TO FLORIDA so I can take lessons from you!! 😂
It would be entertaining, informative, and verification to see you and the crew playing anything from a hole to full rounds. Not to mention bringing out that competitive fire is going to make good content
You bet Michael! We are going to try and get something on camera Tomorrow! 👍👍

Used your tip today. I was so straight and accurate. Thks very much.
"That's not a way to play golf... 🙄" Geez oh Man, such painful truths!!! I find the Internet to be weird when people talk directly to me and they don't know me. I can't wait to practice this, as it makes perfect sense and can be proven in my swing.
Thanks
good lesson !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Shaft and shaft in alignment. Is this not the foundation of the one plane swing? Great videos. 😊
GOOD GOLF LESSON VIDEO
So very important, great coach
Felt like this lesson was directed to me..thank u sir
Yessir! Thank you for letting us know! 😀👍
One thing that I didn't think was a problem for me, might have been this whole time! And it's setting up with the handle too high and making the leading edge flat to the ground. I changed the position and I hit the ball better.
Right on Robby! That is exactly what this video was for! Very common issue and one that affects so many areas of the game.
Yes sir! Polished wisdom!👍😀
The greatest ball striker of all time did it from up there
You can also include a tennis racquet.all their moments of inertia follow the same path through your waist.only in golf is you can’t step.
When you get to that size; hold it like a baseball bat! The guys from the hickory days used to hold it that way like Francis Ouimet!
Could you please explain what happens just before the club makes contact with the ball.seems like the up and down wrist motion must convert to a aft to forward motion.
See “at the ball vs through the ball shawn clement” and “solid contact shawn clement”

Very cool! Nice feedback there Alan, keep up the great work!
Shawn
Shawn, since switching to your methods, my right knee has started to swell. I’m sure I’m twisting it or something on the backswing. Any videos addressing the proper working of the knees hips etc.? Thanks.
Careful with the width of your stance; if too wide, it can affect your knees because of the restriction IN BOTH DIRECTIONS
superb.
Shawn you are a goddamn genius. I use interlock and my hands feel so weak and way to spread out on the club. Gonna try this and lowering the hands
Glad you enjoyed the light bulb moment Bennett!😀👍
I love my rifle 6.5 shafts on my mp32 irons

Love the video information. I do have a question about the top of your back swing. It appears to me that you "cross/over the line" at the top. Am I looking at it the wrong way? Can you explain the top of the back swing position?
Hitting a draw; so the club is setting in the direction I want that ball to start on; see “jow to match backswing to target shawn clement”
@@golflessons Thanks! I watched the video and think I understand. One PGA tour pro is famous for redirecting the back swing and that is Jim Furyk.

Thanks ..👍
@@jdheelfan thanks..will keep that in mind.. a good session on the range with that thought will help I guess.
Shawn this makes sense. Unless you’re a single plane golfer like Bryson, correct?
Or Mo Norman
Bryson isn't a "single plane" swinger with the driver.
We still need some leverage; just watch my daughter who is more along the same lines; we still need DYNAMIC POSTURE FORWARD AND FLEXED INNTHE KNEES.
@@golflessons Actually Mo flexed his wrist downward Like Hogan But according to little mo, the grip was not in the palm but in his fingers of the left hand. The larger grip made it appear it was in the palm. ruclips.net/video/NbtwprWqDCk/видео.html

i find that with your technique i can hit short to mid irons fine but longer clubs I pull hook em.

Thanks!!

Shawn. Great vid as always but is this grip still suitable for shots where you dont need much power/hinge?
You bet! Chips, pitches, everything EXCEPT PUTTING!!
Phenomenal 👌👌👍
Shawn, didn't Moe Norman play that way quite successfully in Canada?
Moe played his whole competitive career with overlapping grip; it only looked like single plane from down the line, but when he swung towards you, you could see the 2 planes plain as day…
Great... More confusion. Every other channel says to lay it diagonally from base of pinky through middle of pointer
How do the "single-plane" swing guys make "bacon-strip" divots holding the club up higher vs. lower?
I considered Hogan’s grip that is drawn in his book, “Five Lessons” as the gospel. I’ll have to try this.
What about the left wrist. Does it matter if it is cupped or not? Will that affect accuracy?
Human anatomy is built for this! When waiting for a pitch in baseball, aren’t the wrists cupped? Tennis, fishing, hammering, all cupped (which is simply hinged on the anatomical snuff boxes in our book and cupped would be collapsed because if one is cupped, the other is bowed)
Shawn. Does this apply to the driver, woods and hybrids?
Golf grip - Would love to see a closer look how you grip it with your left hand (as a righty), because it seems to me it runs along the first joints to the palm which kind of reminds me of a ten-finger grip in some ways. Good stuff as always, thanks!
