@@WildflowersCreations i feel like i could make something of similar size with stone and iron in a few hours time :D but i could be wrong, i haven't tried anything like this yet.
Explanation: The Stakewall has a taller hitbox than it looks, about an inch or few above it. As a result sticking them deep into the ground results in a invisible collision box but the AI can't designate it as a target because the 'coordinates' of said item piece is so far under the terrain it doesn't recognize it as being in front of it. Wooden Beams has this detail too, smoke will not pass through a cubic frame made out of wooden beams, but will pass through a chimney made of walls. Basically wooden beams seems to have the vertical or horizontal width of a half-wall.
So you could make a timber beam box frame chimney and be able to see the smoke inside? My elder temple is between the swamp and plains AND has a copper deposit Infront of it for extra room. Might be a bit far away for a completely underground base, but 2 bases linked by a corridor with palisades around it would mean I could have a separate forge under copper deposit and the living area under the temple. Although trolls could destroy the copper...

I call it Elder Bank. The entrance is a narrow decline with an iron gate at the bottom - I've yet to see a mob come down to the gate at all. It's great! :)
You can build a platform attached to the pillars for a portal entrance. Portal to that level placed behind the alter itself so far hasn't been touched by the Elder boss, or any mobs, and even if they did I can just rebuild the portal to the upper level, which can also double as a sniper point for the elder boss. Unfortunately the tendrils do spawn on anything built above the alter itself, but I find it is easy elder boss farming for the trophy mount for the fireplace and the offering.
I built here too. I built walls in mine. I didn't snap them directly to the side of the pit. I left a tiny gap (As I did an outline on the ground with beams). I was able to build a fireplace that worked without any smoke leakage by leaving hole in the wall behind the fire (Easily hidden too). Nice video :) Could we get a full video covering smoke mechanics, minimum chimney sizes, dissipation rates and so on? A lot of folks - myself included - have made what we thought would be a functional chimney only to find that it doesn't count as open enough ventilation so the fires get smoked out
Note that this is of particular interest for those of us who want to make really decorative and pretty builds. Adding trim and detail to chimney openings seems to guarantee a lungful of smoke :(
i just watched the video from lets game it out yesterday, and the funny thing is that josh was just trolling he wasn't trying to brake the boss intently,
I built a base here back when you made the video on cheesing the elder boss. The corners make a good spot for a fire because the roof is missing there.
Not sure I want an underground base, but i may use this as my portal terminus - sealed off with two levels. Was looking for a rock island to build it on, this would be better.
Man, this place under the altar of the Elder was my 1st thought when i started to watch those vid, that you mentioned! But then in the vid he said that you cant dig under burial chambers, so i thought you cant dig under Elder's place too. Thank you for prooving me wrong! Also, that look on trolls faces XD Priceless XD
An interesting Trick someone can do is using Core Log beams to act as a short AI Tricking barrier around the perimeter of your base. if you use these beams as a bridge and keep it super narrow, mobs can't pathfind over them properly without falling down. as well as there may be ways to place spike traps midair... How about placing spike traps into narrow hallways to lure mobs to run though them but get bounced back and forth on them? basically 0.5m of standing space in the center with spike traps facing the center as it gets placed down the rows. The mobs try to pathfind through it only to bump into them. It may be possible to make moba walk over campfire to set themselves on fire somehow by finding a way to make mobs slide down a cliff into a pit or moat. Make a bonfire and put it inside a lane of pit, then take wood beams or log beams to make bridges over them, when mobs rush in groups over it, they push each other off the beams into the bonfire. Mobs can walk down slopes easily but can't run back up. Would be really fun if we test out roof pieces to find a way to make mobs slide off a terrain as they get confused and slide into a kill chute.

Note that this is of particular interest for those of us who want to make really decorative and pretty builds. Adding trim and detail to chimney openings seems to guarantee a lungful of smoke :(
Yes, soon
what seed was this on? most elder bases would end up getting flooded
Be neat to use the smoke mechanic to make smoked meat/fish.
i just watched the video from lets game it out yesterday, and the funny thing is that josh was just trolling he wasn't trying to brake the boss intently,
If The Elder's altar is too near the coast, then you hit water much sooner. You can still build there, but one storey instead of two.
I'm probably gonna just seal mine of and use teles to get in. Maybe turn it into a bulk storage unit that no one knows about.
lets game it out huh i see your are a man of culture!
Very clever idea and looks fun! I will try it
LETS GAME IT OUT
I built a base here back when you made the video on cheesing the elder boss. The corners make a good spot for a fire because the roof is missing there.
same, took him long enough lmao
I knew it!!! Let’s Game It Out’s Josh introduced some Valheim idea. lmao.
Flawless bunker sort of, you should make a window in middle to shoot them away with your bow, free mats for you to get after they're gone :)
Not sure I want an underground base, but i may use this as my portal terminus - sealed off with two levels. Was looking for a rock island to build it on, this would be better.
Yup, after watching your video I made a base and portal under there lol 🤣 glad to see you figured it out
You are just super helpful. Thanks for this. Subscribed!
Let's game it out is awesome... his points of view are amazing, you two guys are a perfect balance, your its logic and his is imagination...the perfect marriage....lol
It's just like a colony of ants living under the sidewalk. :-)
Can I summon the boss to fight off the raid....?
I'm gonna do this right now, thank you
i wish i could build the boss trophy location into my town like have it as a center piece but it shows red when i go to build near it. good video i enjoyed it :)
ooh, we had the same idea. my last two bases my friend and I built were under elder. I like the fences around the entrance.
but now aren't you stuck with 2 trolls outside?
Yoooo, I was thinking of making a base above that stone platform because its just a permanent fire but that is awesome too.
I was wondering when someone was going to make a vid about the elder base idea. Built mine after I killed him a few weeks ago. It fills with water though since it's near the beach. Though I found two other elder spawn points....well they are pinged on the map. hopefully I will have more dig room there. Good vid mane.
I just created two new maps to test the depth before hitting water and they're both very shallow, seems less than his in the video
portal into the base from outside
Then you couldn't bring metals down but otherwise good idea.
Just transfer those metal between the worlds
Im pretty sure mobs attack portals?
So if you put the portal *just outside* you will have to keep rebuilding it
@@aviv657 The mobs need to be able to get to the portal. If the place is completely resealed, this wouldn't be an issue. Also, I've never had a mob attack a portal, even when dropping them in the swamp for a quick repair hub. Not saying they wouldn't, but I've never seen it happen.
@@chuckchuckerson5364 oh that's for sure, i meant if someone wanted to make an entrance to the bunker using a portal outside, you will have to protect the portal
Very cool. You should maybe also test if you can make a little base below the cap of a copper deposit.
You can, but unless you dig a trench or raise a wall around it - you will have trouble with the trolls
Why dont u use the portals to get in?
Love the shout out to Josh just watched his vid aswell
This makes me want to build this instead of my personal house on my group server with friends and just throw a teleporter where my house is supposed to go.
I did this like two weeks ago it's very useful
Did you fill the whole spot? I'm not sure how to fill it unless you make a portal room. There is just so much space.
@@Firespark81 Aahhh! Portals, would be a cool way to have no entrance. Although then you have to deal with raids on your portal outpost
@@elliotyoung8760 Do raids happen on outposts you're not at? I've only had raids happen on the base I'm at.
@@Fenris420 you are right, they don't. I was just talking about the possibility of them happening while you would be at it to get to your under ground base. Although the chances would be greatly reduced since you won't be there long at all. Also you need 3 utility base peices to have a raid trigger so if you don't have those then you're golden
@@Firespark81 yea I already had a pretty massive base above it before I dug out the basement, so I moved some crafting stuff under it and made some beds, I basically just maxed out the comfort there and made a portal room
I swear everyone doing this because of Josh fron Let's Ganlme it Out lmao
This was the first trick I learned in Valheim. Its always my second base.
I was curious to know if you can get trolls to fight the bosses like eikthyr. that'd make a good video idea ;)
Trolls wont fight the elder and they would destroy wealthier but if they fight I'd like to see it
12:59
Got me actin up
I just think that's a neat trick to get short spikes to ground for a garden or road... And it prob works with other objects aswell? Perfect, more options available now.
Finally did this myself yeah can be done with stone anywhere you want but takes less time doing this and is way more unique
I um, finished building on, around and under Yagluth summoning structure
That looks cool, I’m gonna build one
I wonder - if you sink the palisade wall pieces into the ground like you've done - are enemies unable to target and destroy them? Because that would be some really useful info.
You could put a portal down there and close the entrance completely.
Awesome! I'm not that far yet but an underground base sounds sweet.
This area in my world is right by the coast literally on a small outcrop in the sea. I would drown 🥲
Go by the other boss sites
@@Ogrillian the location was right by my main base which would have been ideal. If i come across one where it would make a good outpost i may consider it.
@@GamezEntertainz :(
I get it.
If you choose to, you may plug your seed into a valheim seed generator and it'll show you the whereabouts of other options. It's an outstanding tool.
@@Ogrillian will look it up thanks for the info!
@8:01 please listen with no context
You are a good man
This is probably already known , you can put campfire on branches in swamp when u making a tree house , first big branch usually lets u place it. (funny how u cant put fire on the wood flore but u can put it on the branck KEK) i do think swamp can be a good starting area for like day 4 if u can manage to set up decent house on tree with some windows for leveling perks
I saw in another tips and tricks video that you can dig down and place up, up to 16 times both directions.
This is cool! Could you also have an outside section above with the pillars? I'm assuming you can since you are building directly on the alter. It would have already built in supports.
Yes, you absolutely can! :) Just be prepared to rebuild every time you fight the elder. Lol.
Edit: I speak from some unfortunate experiences...
@@SethanderWald is there a reason to re fight him? Or just for fun
@@Zorkalot if you want more of his trophies to use for decorating. :) I just do it for fun though. Also, his ranged attack is great for improving your block skill.
Lets Game it Out is great
i would have just sealed the entrance, and used a portal....
Make it your portal hub
Dry wood doesn´t create a lot of smoke, our holiday cabin which is by far from luxurious doesn´t actually have a chimney and we never had smoke problems. I find the whole smoke situation a bit exaggerated, the only thing I have to worry about is not setting the whole place on fire and since the cabin isn´t air tight oxygen is no problem, we can´t make food inside though, would need a chimney for that.
I am not a wood expert though, could be some wood is more susceptible to creating smoke.
You're right. Afaik there is some wood which creates more smoke, but it is over the top in this game. Same with the thing they put in every survival game ever: running through a campfire gives you fire damage. You can see that a lot of survival game devs actually have no idea of real survival.
Sounds like a carbon monoxide risk. Carbon monoxide alarm equivalent in Valheim would probably be tricking a boar into your base and if it dies first, time to get out lol
some day they will find your cold body inside the cabin and coroner will write carbon monoxide poisoning as a cause of death. continuous burning of anything in a closed space equals suicide of the Darwin's prize kind
Stay safe and don't do strange things with your life.
@@gideonfz Well, it's a cabin, and he even said it wasn't air tight. There's obviously a risk, but I imagine it'd have a lot more to do with amount of time, space, air flow, and whether they never opened the door to go outside.
@@MortyKaiShalom It feels like we are in an iglo at night, it gets cold and the cabin is just an old hut termites have chewed on for a long time. It does have a small even less air tight kitchen.
Dying of of carbon monoxide is probably the last thing I worry about, we got it for free but neither my friend nor I are well versed with a hammer so it will only get worse with time.
The beauty is outside, we don´t really spend much time in that hole, the only thing it has going for it is that it keeps out the rain.
OK you GOT me. I finally Subbed, and it was because of this glitch base this is awesome. And I will change from swamp Ewok treehouses, to this woods instead, if, I can still glitch this when I get a new PC.
Finally Josh from LGIO contributes something helpful to the world
Game Devs: look at our bright new shiny game!!!
FireSpark81: Let me show you how many ways I can break it 👿👿👿
Thank you great video, also can't wait to see more of that space subnautica game.
so if you have enough ceiling height like you do the smoke actually dissipates at the ceiling and doesn't seem to build up or bother me down on the floor, figured out i dont even need chimneys if i have high enough ceilings with big enough rooms.
Has anyone tested the low spikes for a base above ground at all? Does it confuse them, can they not break it because of how they are positioned? Would love to know!
Great video as always, very informative!
I was wondering the same thing. I'm going to try putting those around my house.
got so unlucky when i was live on twitch, my day 75 world, the ancient bowl, (The Elder Spawn) is right on the coast line, dug two hits deep and hit water... rip elder base sadge
Why not build a portal on top of the pillers so you can fire arrows at the hordes when raids come? Unless it's a no build zone
