I have two instructors that were in movies they both said the fighting in the scenes is not real because effective movements don't look good on film. They were asked to do big wide movements on purpose . So , its very hard to judge any techniques presented .

This movie has important moral lessons for those who can see them.
The 2 masters in this scene have 武德 , so this fight is a fair fight with 2 honorable men. They both respect each other. But later when he fights the evil General, it is completely different. The General has no respect, so Chen Zhen fights to win.

At the end of the day if two high level martial artists are fighting each other it doesn’t come down to which style is “better”, it’s all about which person is more skilled. Fighting is much more about the individual combatant and not so much about the style.

Yes it can- *If* you find a school that trains it properly and those are very few, you'd be much better off with wrestling or Judo then add some Tai Chi training later on.
