warp.net/record... A video clip for Tim Exile's Family Galaxy, taken from 'Listening Tree'. The album 'Listening Tree' is out 6th April on Warp/Planet Mu.
@Digitos Crudos I just went to listen to that. I can't really hear the similarity but they seem like the sort of band that *would* be an influence on Tim Exile.
Not sure there are tempo changes? well if there are they are always some multiple of the original tempo. If you stick a click track behind this song it wont ever drift off a beat.
@@rngesus8057 There are tempo changes, 4 of them I think. In each case the kick drum switches to a different time signature (6 in the space of 4, not sure what that's called - 12/8?) and then the tempo changes to catch up with the kick drum, putting it back into 4/4 again. I'm sure you could work around it by changing the time signature to something increasingly unusual, but for any sane person trying to learn it, or teach it, you would say "There's a tempo change here, preceded by a funny syncopated bit with the kick drum"
I agree, concept and execution of the composition are both married perfectly and out of this world, technically outstanding too, there will be few artists who ever reach these heights
This, Squarepusher's "Dark Steering", and Venetian Squares "Második Galamb" are my current top 3. What is your current greatest electronic music piece ever now, 10 years later?
I saw Tim live at Coco in Camden some time ago. Impossible to dance to because it's too fascinating watching him work. When he came out into the crowd with an old Kempston joystick from the early 90s and started manipulating the music with it... I think I just passed out. Amazing musician.
Damned, I've heard lots of things through my 30+ years, but this one must be right up there on the baffling scale. Jeeze. I do like the first 3 minutes quite a lot more than the last two though. Will probably buy the album today.
"I'm stuck in the vast shifting space where gravity disappears. I'm orbiting some random place that I haven't seen for years. I'm darting around on a path of Brownian mystery. I can't tell what's the ground or what's the sky or what's in between! I've been away for so long that I've ended up right back home, Amongst the family galaxy of nothing that stays the same. I'm in the family galaxy and we only have one rule: Keep changing every day, don't stay the same or you'll be a fool! The family galaxy keeps changing no matter what you do. We don't know who we are, but we will always be here for you! Go nowhere, watch the world unfolding day by day, Each time in a different way. We'll swim in the sea of change- Rearrange! We don't mind where the question leads us. We know nowhere is better than everywhere. We have only one answer: We all care. Family galaxy's always there for you and me, Just like a listening tree, Come and play in the suns, They're all ours. Family galaxy wants you to come and play, and change every day Come and play in the stars, They're all ours".
Brilliant. It removed my brain, rearranged it and then put it back. At one stage I thought I was being hypnotized. Maybe I have been. Who gives a sh!t, great track!
I've been following Tim's work since Pro Agonist and this song really captures his growth . and in response... "We don''t know who we are but we will always be here for you...we'll swim in the sea of change, rearrange."
i am so exited to see this artist on Chile soon!!! he is the future and i'm someone that is looking for to reach those goals on music. TOTALLY FREEDOM about electronic style.
Syncopation Bonanza! If you can dance to this tune at the first pass you have a super developed hearing sense and rhythm. It sounds like Depeche Mode morphing halfway into Camel (the band from the 70's)
IF this track was premeditated by Tim, then you can completely hear is influence from his Philosophical Degree background. There are hints of nonduality, the now, form within formlessness. If this was premeditated ...I will say this track is absolutely pure genius!!!! If not ....then its just a bunch of happy accidents??? What a F%#!ING brilliant production!!!!! Genuis in a madman sense!!!!
Сходил сегодня пошаманил, сам с собою. И чего-то захотелось просто у костра музычку послушать. Ну ,уже после того как набубнился. Словом ,совершенно неожиданно зашла вот эта атмосферная электронщина... По своему шаманская.
After seeing this video, I had to buy "Listening Tree" album, which I spent an entire weekend listening .. tens of times. Every time I hear the album, it sounds totally different. I just can't wrap my head around it.
@TimeForBold I'll keep your considerations in mind as I listen to Yeah Ghost for the first time. Thank you, TimeForBold! I appreciate your conversation.
still think this is one of the most unique tunes ever.... how it changes tempo/structure/key? as organically as it does i dont think ive ever heard before or since... exiles contributions to first dnb then idm/experiemntal arent rivaled by many if any at all. fucking love.
i never thought i would say this because i can tolerate a solitary negative in almost any context but MAN. i was so excited for Listening Tree and the lyrics just sucked out all the fun for me. i love tim, don't get me wrong--this song is absolutely mindblowing--but even the best moments on this album are marred by it. it's not the vocal melodies, it's not his voice, it's just...oof. I mean come on man, that one about credit card debt...? Brutal. That said I still go back to this song all the time, it's really a work of art (though some of its lyrics are pretty bad too--"i'm in the family galaxy and we only have one rule / keep changing every day, don't stay the same or you'll be a fool"?!? UGHHH. RULE/FOOL?! REALLY?!?). i try to give dude the benefit of the doubt and do a playthrough of the album every now and again but i just haven't been able to look past the notably uninspired lyricism. :^\
the first track is a notable exception--it just barely flirts with the boundaries of cheesiness while managing to slip by unsinged (though the delivery on "take my advice and brace yourself" comes off a tad cringey).
ffwoodycooks Personally I love the lyrics and the whole spacey context (musically) around it. Makes the seemingly straight forward lyrics just a bit off/awkward which I think is a positive thing in credit to Tim's character. Also there's lots of little twists throughout Listening Tree which, for me, add up to enjoying the bigger picture. Maybe you're taste in lyricism's just of a specific kind? Seeing as you can't emphasize/have an open attitude with these concepts... Maybe look for the deeper meaning? The one about credit card debt (my guess is that you mean Pay Tomorrow) is really a sneer-yet-cheerfully-brought about nowadays paying methods. It's going to the shitter and nobody bats an eye (hence why it's musically kind of cheerful/without worries) 'cuz we can pay tomorrow.... Ahhh, hope this helps you enjoy it a bit more and if it didn't improve it at all I apologize. It's all about understanding perspective in the end. Not what YOU want the lyrics to be but understanding where HE comes from and WHY he dresses the music the way he does. Everything has its meaning. Happy trails!
ffwoodycooks Lyrics in music are irrelevant. The only relevant part is that they fit the rhythm of the music. Some people might say the Beatles were quite good at music. "There's nothing you can do that can't be done." "Love to hear you say that love is love." "You keep all your money in a big brown bag inside a zoo." "The movement you need is on your shoulder.""She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah""These are words that go together well" If you like words, read poetry. If you like music, listen to music.
Can't comment on the video (wasn't watching) but the song was incredible. I did not expect it to twist and turn as much as it did. At the start it sounded like it was gonna end up as a Nightmares On Wax ripoff or something.
The tempo/time changes on this are just so clever and amazing. The whole thing is so fluid and slippery. Total genius.
Sorry to correct you, but just so nobody gets confused it's "My new career". Just so it's easier for people to find it lol.
fucking exactly.
@Digitos Crudos I just went to listen to that. I can't really hear the similarity but they seem like the sort of band that *would* be an influence on Tim Exile.

I know it's a lofty claim, but I believe this is one of the greatest pieces of electronic music ever created.
Not at all, id say it definitely is the best, its been years since ive first listened to this and its just as good as it was the first dozen times
Same, actually it's one of the few pieces of electronic music which has ever interested me, held my attention.
I agree, concept and execution of the composition are both married perfectly and out of this world, technically outstanding too, there will be few artists who ever reach these heights
Yep, still all over this.
This, Squarepusher's "Dark Steering", and Venetian Squares "Második Galamb" are my current top 3. What is your current greatest electronic music piece ever now, 10 years later?

4 different time signatures in one song. That doesn't happen very often...
Simply amazing. I can't stop listening to this whole album.
Damned, I've heard lots of things through my 30+ years, but this one must be right up there on the baffling scale. Jeeze. I do like the first 3 minutes quite a lot more than the last two though. Will probably buy the album today.
Looking forward to a remastered version of this excellent vid.
Rhythm changes, lyric content, atmosphere.
I can always listen to this album ,... and it makes me feel great every time :) thank you Tim!!!
a true masterpiece! the changing times signatures of the beat with genius lyrics!! unbelievable!

Love this track, inspiring stuff this is! Transitions are awesome and that transition at 3.05 is mindblowing. Love it to bits.
This song changed my life and my vision of music completely.. I LOVE it so fucking much
Brilliant. It removed my brain, rearranged it and then put it back. At one stage I thought I was being hypnotized. Maybe I have been. Who gives a sh!t, great track!

I don't think genius need be premeditated. I say there's a vast amount of genius out there that does not involve intellectual thought.
Beautiful
