  • The hostile sea can also be, for some people, a protection. Several communities of the American continent have used it to reclaim their freedom.
In Honduras, the Garifunas were slaves on the run who managed to escape their fate by settling on isolated shores. The Kunas from Panama have fought for their independence in the past. In Colombia, the Wayuu Indigenous people live in an arid and remote land they escape by dreaming. The Jangadeiros in Brazil have built their identity based on their love of sailing.

My name is Jorge Marin I am a garifuna born in Honduras. I want people to know that the garifuna/garinagu are not descendants of slaves. We are prisoners of war (P.OW.) we were exile from our country St. Vincent and the Grenadines by the British government who rob our land.

The Garifunas were captured and shipped from Africa to the Caribbean. They never experienced slavery. Their two ships were shipwrecked. They escaped and lived among and intermarried with the Tianos of St Vincent. They never experienced the life of slavery that most Africans in the diaspora endured.
