How I Organise My Kit

  • Organisation is a huge part of working in film... well... it's a big part of life in general. Here is how I organise my kit and hopefully it will help you in working out the best way to organise your own kit!
    I should also note that with the cineluxe roller there is a little more that goes into making the camera safe when packing it with the lens on. I usually have some padding under the lens and the way it is packed in there makes sure it doesn't move at all.
    The small bag is just a generic tool bag I bought from a local hardware store.
    The larger bag is the Tenba Cineluxe Roller 21: amzn.to/2WgX2eY

    As a 2nd AC, my 1st is super super specific about how everything is organized. We use 2 Pelican cases, a 1560 which is our main AKS case which has hard mattes, eye brows, fresh mags, filters, slate tags, cables, and my 1st's hand unit. The second is a 1510 case which is like our overflow with mainly extras and things we'll maybe use once a week. Our cart has 2 drawers that we keep all of our tools in, everything has a label and a spot on the cart.
    We keep the 1560 on the top shelf at all times or if possible next to the camera because I'm constantly grabbing stuff from it. Besides the 1560 we keep all other cases on the bottom shelf to keep a clear work space at all times. The only other stuff we'll have on the top shelf is a a couple of onboard batteries, kimtech wipes, and pancro cleaner. If our camera isn't playing in a shot, my 1st always wants me to go over our kit and reorganize it if needed. She always says, "If you don't stay organized, you're already 2 steps behind when shit hits the fan."

    Thanks for another great video Felicia! I can second those Tenba bags - they're an insanely good investment. I have the hightop version which fits my C200 with the top handle attached, and while it's missing wheels (and can get super heavy), good quality bags last a long time.

    Hey Felicia, I've been really enjoying all your content, I found your channel when I saw your slate video.
    I review video making stuff as well but not at the film making level that you are experienced with. So this is very educational for me and probably to alot of aspiring film makers out there.
    No content is too small, love these small series showcasing simple habits and practices of the industry.
    Cheers !

    I got the hitop because I knew I would rather not have to deal with the top handle at all. It means there's a tonne of empty negative space around the camera but I can live with that.

    +1 for doctors style bags, they are great.
    My go-to bag is a medium size hard case with velcro interor. I just like having it perform double duty as my seat more than anything #TheSimpleThings .

    I went horribly expensive with Pelican. Use 24x24x24 for dropping in fully rigged RED Epic Dragon 6k and 8 Pelican 1550 for batteries and limelites and newer lights and zoom f4 audio. Got colour coded zip tags to separate support, camera, optics, sound, lighting and power at a glance from closed cases. Red for power Blue for audio Yellow for lighting Clear/White for optics, Black for trax - pods - steadicam - shoulder rig, Green for misc.

      That is real organised! For kit like that you sometimes need to go with things like Pelican. If I had a bigger camera I would look at Peli and also get a custom padded body box for the camera and accessories. Like rental houses do with their stuff. 👍

    This is great, planning to buy a tool bag soon! Did you find having a tool belt/pouch handy as well, and if so, any recommendations on good affordable ones that don't require your own belt for it to hook onto your waist?

    • @flickcine
      @flickcine  4 года назад

      I had a belt for a few years. It was a from a brand called Rocket. From memory, Bernice you are Australia based? If so you can get belts like that from John Barry in Melbourne. They're a part of Panavision.
      I'm sure there would be some around online too. Some brands to look at would be Rocket, Setwear, and I believe Shape are also making some. I would also definitely get a padded belt too because it's going to really hurt hanging around your waist all day.
      Otherwise have you thought about chest pouches instead? I found a chest pouch to be heaps more comfortable. Doesn't work for everyone though but it's something you could look into.
      The brand I got was Conterra (model: Tool Chest Radio Harness) but Setwear and a few other brands also make them too.

    Did I see you are using npf batteries for the pocket 6k? If so do you mount npf batteries rather than v mount?

    • @flickcine
      @flickcine  4 года назад +1

      For the moment, yes. It's just a cheaper option for me. Might go Vlock down the track.

    What do you do if you need to get on an airplane with the ac bag? I don’t have much experience carrying on camera bags with camera rigs onto an airplane, I wonder about the limitations typically. Thanks

    Where are your filters/what do you carry them in? Are they in the bag with the camera? They're fragile and scratch prone, but... you want quick and easy access.

    • @flickcine
      @flickcine  4 года назад

      Currently I'm using circular screw on filters. They go in another packing cell, same style as the one im using for batteries but smaller because that's padded.working on getting square filters maybe soon and I got a filter wallet ages ago for that to store them for easy access.
      Filters would be something I would store in the onset bag if possible. 👍
