In the jury, the old man in blue wearing glasses in the back is my great uncle Dickie. He was a director of tv and commercials, and was always popping up as an extra. Been on SNL a few times as well.
The early seasons of law & order are a great example of ratings not always being an accurate reflection of the quality of a show. Some of these early episodes were the very best while the ratings were mediocre. What probably saved the show was the fact that critics loved it from the beginning. The ratings really didn't enter top 30 territory until season 5 I think.
@@creatip123 haha right? I think in some ways it is a radical departure from a lot of television dramas. It requires a lot of attention to detail, it's not a show you can watch as a family if people are going to talk through it. It's TV for intelligent people for sure and it rewards people who pay attention. There is such little discussion of the characters personal lives that it amplifies the effect of the few times that they do and makes it more powerful in that way... Once people started catching on to what a well-written and acted show it was and how relevant it is to our society it's popularity increased tenfold and eventually it was a top 10 show and won an Emmy. I love watching the reruns even from the early seasons because many of the issues discussed are still extremely relevant today all these years later. Great show.
Contrast with the revival, where every shot looks like it was straight off a Hollywood set. I love that the original is back but the early stuff felt the most real.
Fun fact about this episode, this was actually ther first ever episode of Law and Order ever filmed. It was made back in 1988 as a pilot for the series.
Yep, this was pitched to CBS but they rejected it. NBC eventually decided to pick up the series and this episode ended up airing midway tnrough the first season even though it was already 2 years old by then.
Oh... Thanks... No wonder William Macy looks so young... The environment, the style of dress, the tech, the vehicles etc look so much like that 80s era...
Fun fact, the guy who says "Look at that! Do you believe these guys?" at 4:07 is actually the narrator of all Law & Order series, Steve Zirnkilton. He narrates all the openings and the disclaimers.
i love how these old episodes had activity happening in the background. it makes the scenes look more...real. and the gritty crackle sound here and there too
I loved the Ben Stone character. I can't remember if they ever delved into his backstory, like they did for McCoy. Other than references to being in parochial grade school, what was the moral fire propelling Stone. Also felt there was a lot of unexplored territory for Robinette. One more than one occasion I asked myself why he did work in the Public Defenders office. It would be interesting to have him make few cameos in the resurrected series. Heck, Jamie Ross is back.
Season 20 of SVU kinda gives some sort of insight through his son Peter who was the main ADA at the time. Unfortunately with Ben Stone being killed off there won't be a return
I have a feeling we will see Robinette again this season. Richard Brooks has come back for guest appearances a few times. I'd be really excited to see Abbie Carmichael or Serena Southerlyn who we haven't seen since they left the show.
Back when it originally aired, I felt sort of cheated by the way the Robinette character seemed lacking in depth. Sure, he was playing second to Stone and then McCoy. But I never quite got the sense of what he would do if he had to fill their shoes. And between Stone's moral high horse and McCoy's gotta win, Robinette had to be the lone black voice that sees unequal discretionary prosecutions. I really wish Moriarty could have stayed with the program for maybe 2 seasons longer. The writing for them still had potential. Thank goodness there was Lt. VanBuren on the "cops" side AND that character was allowed to develop as a full person.
@@melotone3305 Robinette never served under McCoy. He was replaced by Claire Kincaid, while Stone was still there. Robinette was opposing counsel to McCoy a time or two, but had left the DA's office before McCoy took over.
It's too bad they couldn't give small enough radios. Techzone and quantum tech shows how much technology bas improved since 1990. That assassin shouldn't have got that close to them.
IMO, the earlier seasons were the best. I stopped watching the series the last few years of the original run. Acting wasn't as good. I'm not watching the new season either.
@@ChrisCosat I agree that the most recent seasons were a little sub par at time, but there were some great performances/actors. I think its really worst in SVU, that show is honestly unwatchable at times. It tries too hard to be dramatic instead of letting tension build naturally, like it does here
The episode was loosely based on the 1986 Parking Violations Bureau scandal that resulted in the death (by suicide) of Queens Borough President Donald Manes.
That’s the point. This show’s maker has said in interviews that his goal was to make the NYPD look better than they are in real life. I don’t blame him, otherwise he wouldn’t have gotten as much cooperation and help from the real police as he did.
Ben Stone was kinda boring, I can see why people liked him, but his successor Jack McCoy actually made the show interesting. Wonder why seasons 1-12 aren't streaming on Peacock.

When the show became more melodramatic, the ratings went up. But yeah the early seasons were the best
To bad Peacock streaming service doesn't show the earlier episodes 😕 🤔
@@jeffgalus8454 For real. Someone needs to start carrying them.
because the picture quality was terrible. if only they shot in 4k 60fps, the rating would've gone up.....

@@rsybing agreed, the new l&o is so clean and overproduced… I’ll stick to watching the og l&o in the 90s!
This was the pilot episode, so yeah the budget lent itself to being more gritty. Even the rest of the season 1 episodes look more "clean" than this.

Not every. Shows like the Twilight Zone, The Outer Limits, and Alfred Hitchcock Presents came first when it came to launching careers.

What style hat is Moriarty wearing in the scene with the reporter at 1:20?
This channel uploads clips from old episodes of L&O and SVU, but why are there no clips from Criminal Intent?
I would think it's harder to clip C.I., since, instead of 50/50 Law and Justice, it's 50/50 Law and Crook.
