You know, I had no idea this song was about the betrayal of Judas, I just thought it was some story about a gay couple in the past or something like that lol. Idk, it just felt like there was some romantic undertones in the art.

Yeah, the romance is a play on the source material. The story this is based on, called "An Urgent Appeal", is based on the Biblical story but has some creative liberties taken. For example, Judas is obsessed with Jesus's beauty and doesn't believe in the afterlife or that he's the son of God, he just is obsessed with Him and wants to be His everything in a psychotic way. His idolization turns into hatred and then he is okay with selling him out and getting him killed.
It's an interesting read and there is a free link in the description! It's a pretty good Japanese to English translation!

@@Trickle_Official Do you have a source of Nalut actually saying that's what it was based on? It’d be weird if the song was based on a Bible story (or any story that isn't related to Project Sekai) since the commissioned songs for character focus events are always linked to the event story. Your translation is the only one I've seen that put in so many religious references, every other translation I've read fits with Hermit's story i.e. Mizuki's fear that their friends will eventually leave them and being afraid to get too close and be open about their identity, while Ena tries to break through that wall and convince Mizuki that she really cares about them and wants to stay together no matter what.
I love your vocals in this though, your voice is fantastic as always.
usually i dont listen to english covers cause getting the lyrics both being accurate, fitting with the rhythm of the original lyrics/music, and just generally flowing well is very hard and most people dont seem to get it good, but HOLY SHIT i loved this, it really feels like the same energy of the original, just in english with nothing compromised, i love it! keep up the great work man

Sometimes i forget that this was hermit mizukis commissioned song, but the composer is so talented i always love songs that sound upbeat but the story is tragic and i feel like a song like that definerly suits the theme the hermit set was going for

this is by far one of my favorite trickle covers of all time, i think. the translyrics are purely flawless, and perfect for his voice; the delivery, the low whispers at parts, the growl, the merging of “lower your eyes” just flows so well and his voice has such insane emotion. i love all the other youtaites deeply, but no other cover i’ve heard has done this song as much justice as this one. so perfect.

Ever since I’ve heard this song I’ve loved it, hearing you cover it was great! It sounded so good in your voice, it almost had a whispery tone in the verses which I really liked, almost like you were telling a secret, then in the bridge the strength and borderline roughness gave me a feeling of desperation, and all of the different vocal techniques you used came through and I was impressed! Or I’m overanalyzing… anyways another comment about the verses, I loved hearing you pop up the octave during the second verse in those parts. It took me by surprise and made me smile, I love hearing so many sides of your voice! Well done as always!!

before i read the short story this is based off of, i thought these two only loosely based off of judas and jesus... i thought based on the lyrics/video that the jesus comparisons with the witch girl was actually making her out to be a charlatan/fake, e.g. "you promised you'd set me free but never came back for me" and "i'll set us free both tonight" are rather lofty promises that the witch doesn't keep, and the maid's life only gets worse after the witch enters her life. i thought because she was being hunted the witch sabotaged the maid who was naïve and deeply in love (e.g. "i worship you) and so she didn't see the betrayal coming when she planted evidence on her (the black magic book)... and that the maid only had her burned in retaliation in order to save herself/get her life back
after reading the short story tho it makes a lot more sense.

Theres so many meanings in the visuals of the song, like 0:42 the witch girl is depicted as a vase of Lilies Of The Valley, which is one of Jesus's many names. Also at 0:50 (ish) the girl is shown helping a sick woman, she also wears the Christian fish earring. At 1:30 you can see a wine glass and plate, which im going to assume is from the Last Supper. Especially at 3:20 the exchange from Judas with the Pharasies; 30 pieces of silver for Jesus to be crucified. I could go on and on but i also want other people to find things themselves lol (Btw incredible cover, Trickle, another masterpiece 💜)

To bring up the religious references would be pretty much sacrilegious, but boiled down I had a person I was very fond of that made a really awful decision and had to recently cut them out and this song helped me make the hard decision to actually do that. (Apparently it's specifically by a short story by Osamu Dazai written from Judas point of view.) The witch dressed in white (divinity) and red (love, passion, blood) is associated with Jesus while the maid whose outfit has yellow accents (betrayal) is associated with Judas.
More details:
0:04 and 3:26: The three candles light up and then are blown off at the end, this might allude to the promised resurrection 3 days after the Christ's death.
0:05: The Witch's earring is fish shaped; fish was an early Christian symbol. Her walking to the stake might be a nod to the carrying of the Cross.
0:08: The maids are the Apostles; Yellow Maid/Judas is the only one averting her eyes
0:33: There are holy halos above all of the chairs except Yellow Maid's, the same way Judas is the only halo-less Apostle in religious art.
0:34: The flower in Yellow Maid's spot is a branch of Judas' tree, named as such because Judas hung himself from it. It also shows up in the official Spotify/ITunes/... thumbnail with several nooses hanging from it.
0:40: The Witch's halo is large and bright-she is the most divine figure.
0:41: White lilies are one of the symbols of the Virgin Mary (and of course also of yuri)
0:45: The Witch is shown helping a bed ridden girl, probably a nod to the Miracles.
Each time the Witch is shown in patterned silhouette, it's with a Christian cross pattern.
0:58: Since the genders are bended here, the young man is probably taking the role of Mary Magdalene, with this scene being a nod to the time she washed the Christ feet with expensive perfume.
1:45: The Last Supper. The Witch is seen holding a wine glass, surrounded by the Maid's and doves (the Holy Spirit) are flying around.
2:25: Continuing from the Last Supper, Jesus did tell his disciples that someone among them had betrayed Him. Here the Witch is probably calling out Yellow Maid's betrayal.
2:28: Yellow Maid is selling out the Witch to the local religious authorities like Judas did to Jesus. Note that she doesn't wear her maid outfit anymore.
2:34: The burning flames imagery is apparently from the Dazai short story
3:00: The 30 silver coins
3:02: The traditional depiction of Judas betrayal has him wearing a yellow hood.
3:07: The betrayal. Showing who the authorities should arrest through a normally positive gesture (kissing/dancing) and the victim accepting it willingly, despite knowing it's true meaning.
3:28: If the above reference was too subtle

12/11/2021-EDIT: Okay scratch that "apparently based", the MV is definitely based on "Kakekomi Uttae" by Osamu Dazai (which you can find in English under the name "An Urgent Appeal"). This short story is all about Judas very strong and very complicated feelings towards Jesus: even if he acknowledges that Jesus is human and faillible, he still love him regardless, but due to that it is a love that is more romantic and possessive in nature. Judas wants his help acknowledged (1:51), wants his Lord undivided attention, once asked Him during a walk along the sea if He would give up everything and live with him (1:07), and when He seems to show attraction to Mary Magdalene (0:54), he admits that rather than being jealous of Jesus for getting her attention, he feared that she would steal Him. As all of those things accumulate, as well as moments like chasing the merchants from the Temple, Judas feel like he has to kill Jesus by his own hand and then kill himself, as that the only way he could be in peace with him. RE-EDIT: In the end he ran away to sell the Christ once He pointed him out as the traitor during the Last Supper. (2:40)
Going back to the MV, I feel like the witch hat kind of symbolize the ability of our two protagonist to stand as equals, something that Judas goes back to regularly in the short story. Starting from 2:11 the Witch does not wear her hat anymore, letting her and the Maid have the same height. In particular, the betrayal dance scene reminds me of this line: "Ahh, what fun. I feel so good. Tonight will be the last night for me too. Sir, sir, please take a good look when I stand next to him tonight. Tonight I will stand as his equal. I won’t fear him. I won’t abase myself to him. I am the same age as him. An excellent young man just like him.".

I was raised Christian but didn't really form an understanding of and start actually studying my Bible and trying to form a relationship with God until about 4 years ago! He is good, man, even when people (like myself) are not.

@@Trickle_Official yea it wasn't rly an animation it was more like moving a character a little per frame o__O some aot thing. actual animation would be closer to what i do i guess. i just think it's cool u r honest bout how ugly it is keke. i think u jokingly got sad about it bcoz after it got released i said "hey aren't you the person described that made this very ugly animation".
usually i'd be more timid and give feedback but it looked very much intentional so yea.
i think it was done in MS Paint, all the frames also had the selection tool of MS Paint in there.

@@Trickle_Official eitherway speaking of animation i can make some animation for u if u want but i only do creatures in my own style. lately been starting a series of creatures with full mechanics descriptions too of people from some utaite server i got close with.
some people got reaaally angry with me because well ykno how group gossip spreads most likely, couldn't give them their gift :(
but it's fun to look at the differences in cover artists within this genre, since it's pretty much usually the same song they sing it's a lot easier to detect differences between each version.
since i attempt to apply the personality i detect from the person to the creature the variety becomes more obvious. idk if it's something u rly want to have but yea you can talk to me if so, u needa be sure u want it bcoz i have a big list of humans and it costs a lot of effort. also needa know your favorite holiday for such and how you'd like your species to be called.
no idea if i'll actively use them for a video game but it's relaxing thing to work on bcoz the other tasks are really draining.
