- www.pointblanko... - We were very excited to welcome to the Point Blank studios dubstep DJ/producer High Rankin to go through some of his tracks in Ableton Live and start to build a new one from scratch.
Labelled as one of 'the scenes most eccentric artists', High Rankin's exuberant personality never fails to draw in the masses and cause mayhem on the dancefloor. After signing to Underdogs Management in the summer of 2008 he went on to release material on Herve's Cheap Thrills label and put the motions in place for the launch of his own label Suicide Dub. He's remixed tracks for the likes of Missy Eliot, Cypress Hill and Amon Tobin and also secured a publishing deal with Bucks Music Group.
He re-launched his label in June 2010 which has since gone on to release various compaliation albums and material from Zardonic, Temper D and Cliffhanga.

"some choppy vocal shit that is very popular with the youth of today" hahahahaa the mindset of a producer
Every key has a relative key that is 5 notes down from where that key is. They usually go very well together because they have the more notes in common than any other scale, so they harmonise really well.
Two things I learnt from this:
1) You don't HAVE to know every little thing about every little thing
2) Don't over think the process
I spent years learning about the tech side thinking its paramount, but its not, the music is. Anything goes, its creative, use presets and samples if you want, add window washing noises if you will.. Use your ears and just write tunes! I didn't take a single note in this video and I'm all the better for it.
Thanks Mr. Rankin you sir are a fucking demon.
The process of making a track and patches from the ground up was very useful to see. He clearly knows what he's doing but doesn't explain his choices very well. In any case it is great to see him composing 'instinctively' and clearly he's got a lot of experience at knowing what works when it comes to quickly creating patches.
russel howard works for point blank?
I am a Rankin Audio Customer... This was a pleasure
you have no idea how much respect i have for you guys after getting will on here!
I LOVE YOU High Rankin! Such an inspiration source!
True statement. Burial has his heart in it for sure, although he's making a totally different style. My statement might have been a bit generalizing... this dude's attitude towards producing just amazed me at the time!
The basses he uses from sample packs are ones he made and sells on loopmasters. He doesn't use other peoples bass samples packs. He just likes working with wav rather then midi when he is using things like growls and such. And having all your basses already processed and bounced out is easier then having to process them all for each new song.
there are so many phrases in here which would be perfect to sample before a drop... soooo many!
I like that stepper trick in massive. And very helpful talk and recommendations. Thanks!
I knew about he's sample packs, but not about the himself. Turns out the guy is hilarious! I'm not into dubstep, but watched the whole thing. Good job!
Loved this. Rankin is hilarious and great at what he does. More interviews like this, please!
I thought the production portion of this was quite dull, but the discussion during the second half was really good and informative.
Dont quote me but i think it is from Run Dmc - Peter Piper It breaks out into acapella for a sentence at the end of a phrase about 1/2 way in (we all know how the story GOs) Its on several scratch records or obviously you could sample it from the original
Hi Frnk, no the audience does not pay. The masterclass is 100% free of charge, the only condition being that you have to be a Point Blank student.
His tracks are sick, that's more important than some theory behind this (Although it is interesting...) And he can make it sound the way he want
crammed a hell of a lot in to an hour here, very nice!
thanks pointblank! this is GREAT!
Good video. Cool song in the beginning.
I'm bored of schools activity.Always ask me to do something that is not me!
Here i am,learning to control my mouse and keyboard to make some good music.
Ahaha XD Turn on the autocaptions XD Seriously, such a helpful hour! I would HAPPILY pay for this kind of tuition!
High Rankin, you are hilarious! :))) Nice tutorial @pointblankonline and High Rankin!
Thank you for this amazing upload. I really appreciate it.
Complete legend
LOVE MASTERCLASS THANKS
It's not my thing either really but you'd be surprised what you can take away from watching some things you dislike. There is usually always some kind of good nugget of info. It seems a few of these VIP artist masterclasses are simply the artist showing up to the studio and talking, without much prep beforehand. Anyway, we just bite the bullet and try to learn something with what is provided.
Not specially at dubstep, but all kinds of music its all about the structure, flow,Eq etc..skills you know.
"Lets quantize that shit" loving the technical terms :)

high rankin should deffo become an english teacher when hes done with dubb. wish he was my english teacher
I know your not the actual producer but can you tell me whether the synth at around 8:58 is looped? Would be really helpful :) Great video very intertaining as well as informative, high rankin is one of the best xD
High Rankin made it himself. He printed 100 and they've all sold out!
i must said this is a good tut for making bassline's using samples
+1 on the Drum and Bass scene, there used to be hu our in the early days...then money and pretence.
I make house music now, it has got exciting again and people in that genre have fun and women are sexier.
Forget how to wobble and resampling, it's all about mixing and structure. Took me a while to sink that in lol.
were this shool is located???
usa or uk ??
very very well said, thank you!
His t-shirt is epic
Where do you think he gets those samples to create samples from bruv? Thin air.. He's used drum samples from other packs and processed and combined them in his own way, same as everyone. As well as creative mashing from bass and synth lines. Its a combination of them all to create his own flavour of samples.
I wish his voice was at the same level as the music. :( lovin it so far other than that
The song at 2:00 is High Rankin - Keep Rocking btw..
this video encouraged me to but ableton live thanks for the tutorial :p
WHAT EQ tool is that at the beginning. I love the visual for it!
They all look so wide eyed and nervous lmfaoo
I keep trying to swat away that spider in your picture lol
Cameraman in love with front row bird.
this was helpful! thanks!
Very well said sir.
High Rankin is cool, I saw him in Kiev twice
"Hey bro ,nice tune.Listen to mine"
HAHAHA.
He seems like such a nice guy
Intro music:
High Rankin & Tigerlight - Day To Die
Haha, love the Modern Talking joke at 20;30 ish
4.32 ALLOT OF GUFF RUNNING AROUND HERE! HAAAA p.s BIG UP RUSSEL HOWARD!
"Some choppy vocal shit that is very popular with the youth of today." Hahaha yes!
Watch out we got a high rankin imitation
"The intro will be written, then it's a case of putting some farily obvious dancefloor dubstep on the back end of of it" - hahahahahahaha
I'm a producer and have a moustache too. Do I deserve attention of that stunning lady in the front seat? Such a beauty..
Yep I made that sample pack for Elite Sounds in 1998. It is no longer available. It was bought from me in 2005 but the company is no more.
Might be the best shirt ever. I want it, but I feel like I'd be copying you.
Hell ya! wow thanks!!!!!
He's from Brighton, which explains that.
Well I wouldn't say that's every producer. One man doesn't define the entire scene
Where's Gordon ramsey skulking round back with a portable oven cooking Jamie O's tiny chocolate balls.
Mike Green don''t worry dude, i got the reference...
29:29 SHIT JUS GOT REAL
I gotta agree with you, he's a good producer, nothing said, but seems like he was 0% prepared for a class
i feel the exact same way..lets be friends. whats your soundcloud? and or whatever you use
Cool!
cant believed no one laughed when he said get ur modern talking. hahahaha
Ah, thanks!
Why didn't you do the audio feed in stereo?
05:31 Xavier from Justice in the crowd! :D
love the ridiculously proper accent!
Great Video! I just wish i was able to hear what the students were asking..
he used the bass growl sample's from his own sample pack.
15:02 everyone is like UHH Wtf IS going on here !
I guess I should run this video to my compressor bus eh? lol
"Let's make some bass noise.....so you're going to get your modern talking" LOL
how did he curve the automation at 27:33? can you only do that with fades?
whats the song at the beginning and at the end!!!! Im dying to know!!!!!!!
Damn, dude is literally Russell Howard MK2, for real. BBC must be cloning their presenters.
whats the name of the song he shows in the beginning??
keep rocking, free download on high rankin's soundcloud
Hahh I'm not mad. You actually seem a lot nicer than most people on here :)
How did he get his "Go" Samples?
I stay in the UK - I know what he means. You ever visited London?
DMGAudio EQuick.
You can get it for £74.99.
I prefer Fabfilter Pro-Q. Similar interface, but better. (more expensive, £140ish)
Looks like an old version of a Fab Filter EQ but i could be wrong
What's the name to the song in the intro?
Do anyone know what the song he starts talking about is called ?
Need Hip Hop Courses !
what is that bass sample and where can i get that
Does anyone know where he got the "GO" Vocal Shout from? I need !!
i'm a current pointblank student? is there anywhere i can download this?
What's the song at the start called ?
he is great
how old is he, anyone?
where is that
What's the song at the start?
