If you haven't watched Todd Terje's live set from the 2014 Oya Festival, I highly recommend it. The whole set is incredible (he performs with a live band) but he ends with this song and it's just endless joy!
I don't know anything about music production but Inspector Norse has always been a favorite track of mine. Watched this video and it's extremely rare that we get something like this. Clearly a very skilled musician walking us through this track and all of its special parts and moments. It made me appreciate it even more. You seem like an excellent teacher as well. Thank you for sharing this video with us. 10/10
I found him by accident when I was on a love heart ( I'm sure you know what I mean by that) and played the whole "it's album time album" and didn't stop moving the whole time. He is amazing. Can't get enough of him now.
This is so dope! If I was in that audience I'd be so hyped. Awesome rendition and incredibly engaging deconstruction. All the instrumentation was spot on, bravo!! 👏
That's because there is no microphone aimed at picking up the audience reaction. It seems like their is only one mic, which is only picking up the host. Also we can't see their reaction, which only exacerbates the problem
Ski has tremendous skills! This track is one of my favorites. I really enjoyed hearing Ski's version and would love to hear some of his original stuff. I bet it rocks! 😊
Music content aside, thank you for teaching me how to properly say 'Terje.' I'm one of those weirdos who insists on saying 'Moog' like 'rogue' because that's how it's pronounced in Germany, and I've often wondered how to say 'Terje.' Now I know!
Good God. This makes me want to sign up for this course sooooo badly. WOW. Wish the last section was done as slowly as the drum programming. (Would love to see a bit more of the synthesis elements too but hey maybe I'm asking for too much.)
Its definitely the G that’s the tonic. That’s the release of the harmonic tension when the b part kicks in. So the a part chords is b6 to b7 in the scale of g. Its pretty evident in the melody. Really nice to see the breakdown
Key signature is G minor (/Bb major) people, he's making it unnecessarily complicated with arguing for a mixolydian mode. Chords are VI -> VII (or IV -> V in Bb). Also, the modulation in playing G major rather than G minor is quite common, it's just to surprise the ear and feel more uplifting and it does not mean we have to consider changing the overall key signature to make sense of that modulation in the context of G minor.
Ski Oakenfull Sure, and it’s not like “the math is off” or anything :) But when creating melody and other arrangement parts for that looped progression it’s a bit more intuitive and straightforward to tell students to play as if in Gm - like how the synth melody/riff accentuates the high ‘g’ and isolated would feel like a natural minor melody, or if you were to improvise other riffs, play a one-note rythm guitar, or even jammin blues scale, all would work and feel natural in Gm. I feel arranging in mixolydian, or any other mode for that matter, it is most often very melody-related, more so than purely defined by chord structure - like the tune Scarborough Fair :). But ofc its just my opinion - otherwise it was a great educational video!
It would be great to see a follow up to this where Ski shows us what sounds are used/created for each of the tracks including the beat. Is there any chance the Ableton Project file including samples/sounds can be shared, please?
Hey, thank you again for the course, very interesting, by the way I love this song so much (as much as DeLorean Dynamite ahah) - juste I want to add that the MIDI link doesn't work actually, could you make it available again, please ? Thanks !
How do you make that Chord stab Sound??? I can't recreate that clarity and fullness with filter cut offs. Is it just an Ableton preset or a plugin? Thank you for any help or direction :)
Why didn’t you recreate the whole track only using the ARP like in the original? Surely this could have been used as an educational tool and example for sound design and limitations.
I originally recreated all the sounds using Ableton Live devices and only replaced the bass sound later using an ARP 2600 to show the synth. I agree that it would have been cool to use the ARP plugin exclusively, but also very CPU heavy to have 4 or 5 instances of the Arturia ARP plugin running concurrently! It also would have doubled the length of the presentation which was live.
Ski Oakenfull I get you. Perhaps one day you can get Todd Terje to do a complete deconstruction with you! That would be really great. Keep up the good work 🙏🏻
What track do you want to see Ski deconstruct next?
BICEP - ATLAS
The Aztec Mystic - Knights of the Jaguar
An LCD soundsystem song ( maybe 'someone great' would be fun to watch)
Juno Reactor - Mona Lisa Overdrive (preferably Matrix Reloaded version) please :)
Boris Brejcha - Schleierwolken
It's only the best song ever made that is not known by everyone I sometimes listen to to it 4 times in a row and it stil gets me happy evry time
Couldn’t agree more. Anytime I’m feeling down, I throw this on
I know right? It's such a happy track
Heard this tune for the first time yesterday in a coffee shop, had to Shazam it.
go to the live version
You can´t do anything else but smile when listening to Todd Terje!
It might not be humanly possible.
and dance :)
You can also drink !
Awesome thank you
Thanks for watching.

I've been trying to find it but the sound is scuffed. Do you have a link?

@@dafunkyshit ah thank you - I appreciate it but I meant the entire set he had. I've seen the Inspector Norse part and it's awesome :D
18:42 and beyond.. you could play this melodie all by itself for 3 minutes and people still wouldn't get bored of it.
This is the best song ever made.
so glad for this class right on time during this quarantine
First thing I thought when I heard this song was "this is a masterclass in song production"
Clearly I was correct.
Can’t believe i found this tutorial. This track is a gem and still to this day will gives me goosebumps and make my body move invulnerability 😂
This is the track that always gets impromptu dance parties going in my share house. Then the rest of the album.
Superb job by the tutor. Doing that flawlessly in front of a live crowd, bravo.
You should of seen my happy face when I received your notification video .. "Inspector Norse" is one of my favourites tracks ♥️♥️
Should be the national anthem for the world
One of my fav tracks of all time...beautiful!

I got to see Todd Terje on shrooms a few years back in Brooklyn.
Still one of the best nights of my life
😭😭👌

Ski is the consumate pro. Amazing and that track is a stone-cold classic.

une pure merveille
Any more other than this was ahead of its time and hit just every emotional nerve. Magic 🪄
The most underwhelming audience response to a fantastic track

One of the best tracks ever made! 💯
One of the best tracks ever! My soundtrack when i leave from work.

So many people still pronounce 'Moog' like a cow would.
"Inspector" may well be the best music video I've seen
Thank u so much!!!!
Much love for Sky!!

Best feel good song ever
Todd is the man
Not gonna lie, the only reason I came to this video was just to hear how Todd Terje's last name is pronounced, but that was a great video!
love the Ski Oakenfull lessons. Always excellent choice of tracks deconstructed
Lotus' cover of this song brought me to know the brilliance of Todd Terje
I fucking love this beat. When I die I want this to play on my funeral.
Ski u r such a super nice and humble person, I hope one day I can shake your hand, I'm sure u r an awesome man. Greetings from Rome :)
Wonderful, thanks !
Hats off !
Pretty hard to do this live
Wow! such a lovely and precise deconstruction. Thank you so much Ski. Always a pleasure to watch and learn from your videos.
thanks for the midi files. mighty fine of ya.
Really excellent job, and I use this track in my lessons as well
that was wonderful! the build up, music theory and the ending with involvement of one from the audience. pretty things, thanks for that :)
ENTIRELY!! ON THE ARP!!!! NO. FUCKING.WAY. Amazing!
Fkin' love this track
Amazing. I love this series.
Fantastic video, love it!
my favourite dance tune. all time.

magic is happening!

Absolutely
That video was cool AF, I wish every video had as much preparation go into it
Those beautifyl jazzy chords.....

MT Although I agree that calling it G minor may simplify the understanding, I feel the key centre (tonic) as F. I deliberated over this however!

that guy is so damn good..
thank for reminding me that I will never be able to produce any tunes :))
that was awesome!! love inspector norse
21:10 : shazam recognizes it as the original. Well done again! COngrats!
This track reminds me of "Drop the Pressure" from way back in the day
Totally!
Genius as always mate. great deconstruction
Brilliant track & vid 👏💙😍
Great song
Holy s**t amazing job. Stripping down Terjes structures makes it look pretty clean and simple actually - but also kinda takes away the Terje Magic...
But, that IS the magic! :)

Underrated comment.
Is Paul a member of Hot Chip, this is the question
this is so awesome :)
18:45 now you're talking!
Great video
I don't know how long this took to prep but holy this guy in talented.
thanks a lot ))
awesome videooo !!! :) :)
00:27 "Todd Terje's Inspector Norse...has anyone heard this track?".........DEAD SILENCE.....
A shame Because he’s AMAZING!

Very Disco and synths
Legend !
Brilliant!
Great breakdown / deconstruction of an amazing song! How to download the project MIDI files?
yessssssssssss!!! I fucking LOVE this album!
Playing this song is actually better than doing drugs.. 🙃
was no one else astonished to hear Todd Terje's name said out loud and consider for the first time that the 'j' is not pronounced?
It *is* pronounced, just not in the way it's pronounced in English ;) In Norwegian, "j" is pronounced more like the "ye" sound in "yeah"
That's its pronunciation in all germanic and northern languages so no
What is the preset used for the chords? ARP? Melody?
How do you make that Chord stab Sound??? I can't recreate that clarity and fullness with filter cut offs. Is it just an Ableton preset or a plugin? Thank you for any help or direction :)
Wondering the same thing, is it also the Arp 2600?
Nice one :-)
ufff how could i have mised this one
missed a couple bits but nice way to do it in front of an audience
Was the Ableton project file ever shared of this?
Please deconstruct Shook - Milestones!
magic

For the B section arperggio looks like you're playing G9 -> Cm9 or do I see it wrong?
This is amazing content. Thank you! So all the sounds were still generadted by the soft verison of ARP 2600?
legend!
perfect

Rita... You had one job. Lol
And you did it well. 😜😊
