Root isn't great at 1 but it's a great multiplayer game. To contrast that at solo you may want to pick up a game like Ark Nova, super fun puzzle but also amazing at more players.
Root, oh my god. I borrowed this box from the library and I just didn’t want to have a 4 hour learn and play experience. It’s overwhelming to say the least about the rules. A trulyexpert game, maybe in 3 years…
Root is amazing but since the android and ios app came out i have found no reason at all to bring it to the table. The digital version solves all movement mistakes and any other small rules that are easily forgotten. Have you played the digital version? If so what do you think?
We love the digital version, but I still think the tabletop version warrants frequent play. It's just such a great way for 4 or 5 people to spend a couple hours. We host weekly game nights though so, it makes it easier to table consistently.
I absolutely prefer the tabletop version but I play the digital pretty often and with a few friends as well. I have it on android and steam. Once we get a discord channel together in the future I'd be down to play some Root with ya.
Interesting thoughts on Root player count. I really didn't like adding in Hirelings but did so because playing with 3 without isn't great. I think 4 is the best player count, followed by 5. 5 just makes the game slightly longer for me. Its a shame... Root is my favorite game as well, but just so hard for me to get to the table!
We table Root a bunch! I don't think all hirelings are made equal, but it's a fun aspect to worry about at 3. I just loooove Root at 5. If everyone knows what's going on, it's ripping fast, too! I think playing with the same group consistently helps though, and we do play it in streaks.
Love the list but I’m surprised Twilight Imperium isn’t on there. The intensity and ever evolving strategy of negotiation and inevitability of war makes it get more intense every game. The expansion only made each faction more balanced. Heck there is a popular podcast and entire fan base of meta discussion on it. Not for everyone but definitely my favorite game of all time.
Twilight imperium is amazing but very difficult to co-ordinate and play. The expansion, while adding balance, also introduces some more time to the game as people get more options for actions etc. It's a phenomenal game but the time commitment makes it a bit too hard to table (for us)
I agree. I figured if they put voidfall TI would for sure be top 3 on one but is never mentioned. All people ever complain about the game is the inability to play it (which I totally agree since you need at least 2 other players willing to spend 6+ hours on it). However that doesn’t mean it isn’t an amazing game. My #1 and only gets farther ahead every time I play it.
@AdamSchliesmann Part of what makes games amazing is actually playing them! We love TI, John more than Jeff, but the inability to table it and the commitment makes it so much harder to justify over just playing Voidfall. :) such an outstanding game though.
Only played dune once (I won) but didn't like it at all because just playing cubes and completely forgetting the theme! I was not on Dune at all! Never again!
Nemesis, fun? More like a grueling 6 hours IMHO. I also played Lockdown and it was basically the same thing… 6 hours of getting beat down and then losing. Pass.
Great list but, can we all just stop ripping on all the older classics like Risk , Monopoly, etc. etc. etc.. I would love for one of these list makers to have like, Sorry, in their top ten. They are games handed down from generations and still enjoyed to this day. Anyway, sorry for ranting. Great list.
Thanks for commenting and watching. I don't think it's unreasonable to say games have improved over time. I think you can appreciate the classics while being thankful of the advancements.
The classics are miserable to play compared to today’s best of the best. The industry has come so far. what we as viewers are interested in when we watch these videos is opinions on great games that we may not have heard of.
Risk is 100% in my top 5 games of all time, and will stay there there until I die. The memories I have of playing risk as a teen, I own 2 normal editions of it, as well as 8 other versions of risk I love it so much!!!
The same type people who have ruined board games ruined D&D. The classics are great but not to 25 year olds who play exclusively with other people in the age bracket who seem to think a game needs a weight of 4.5 to even BE a game. You can talk people into playing Risk or Sorry. Ask a neighbor or your uncle to play Gloomhaven or Wingspan. Nope. And on top of it...they carry on about mechanics when the actual premise of the game is boring AF. Root isn't even a game IMO....it's hideously hard to learn or teach. How is that even close to being fun??? These people hate Talisman or Dungeon which are both FUN games anyone can play. Not everything in life has to be as complicated as a nuclear reactor. It's a different ball of wax for a group of game enthusiasts to get together for Root than a household to play Risk. I think if they want games that hard....great but not all people do.
We have very different tastes in games, but I enjoyed your positive energy and enthusiasm!
Well we appreciate that!!! What would a few of your faves be?

@AdamSchliesmann Part of what makes games amazing is actually playing them! We love TI, John more than Jeff, but the inability to table it and the commitment makes it so much harder to justify over just playing Voidfall. :) such an outstanding game though.
Dune at 2 players sucks IMO. I can see how one could overlook its greatness having never played with 3+ players.
As can we. We are just pushing for a redo!
A lot of cult of the new here, oldest game is Inis from 2016 and all the rest are 2018 or later
Well, we both started playing board games after 2018, so that would make sense!
Only played dune once (I won) but didn't like it at all because just playing cubes and completely forgetting the theme! I was not on Dune at all! Never again!
Sorry to hear you didn't enjoy it. It's more about the politics of dune than the wars, honestly
Nemesis, fun? More like a grueling 6 hours IMHO. I also played Lockdown and it was basically the same thing… 6 hours of getting beat down and then losing. Pass.
Sorry you feel that way. I understand it though, taken seriously the game can be super frustrating.
A few good ones, but mostly just nope.
Do you have any suggestions we didn't list here?! I'd love to hear your favorites!
@@ChitsandCardboard Concordia, Underwater Cities, Netrunner.
Zzzzzzzzz
Reminds me not to go to a club game hosted by you fellas.
Very pedestrian selection.
Not a wargame present.
Not a single one.
Root is a war game, technically! As is pax pamir which was in our Top 20. Sorry to hear these games weren't for you!
I've got another label to bestow on your Top 10...
"LAME"
Thanks for watching anyway man :)
Top 20!!! Shouldn't this video be called Top 20 Board Games Of All Time....?!!?
We did another video for 20-11!!!
Sorry I lied… 7 other versions 😆
