I'm revisiting these before a NEO draft at Mox and just want to note how much I appreciate the childlike glee you guys put into the discussions. Really keeps me stoked on what's fun about the game.
The UG ramp/multicolor deck is definitely fun, but I think there's also a sneaky "hidden" deck in those colors. Tempo/ninja with Fang of Shigeki, Network Disruptor, Skyswimmer Koi, any blue or green ninjas, even Coiling Stalker, and a card you can get pretty late, Saiba Trespassers. It's a deck that can really pressure people and stop them from doing much and you can build it with only commons and uncommons. And if you get a few good rares or mythics it can go off. Anytime I first pick Tech Wrecker, I keep this deck in mind just in case. It's so much fun to play. Loving this format overall. There are so many interesting interactions and fun builds. Almost every color combo can play different styles.
Yeah that was the main takeaway for me so far in the format. Almost every color combination has either an aggro option or a more controlling option, you can build the main archetype of the color combo or something different, you can mix and match a lot of good 3 color combinations... This set has just so many enablers and cool combos even at low rarities that also crosspollute archetypes quite well that it's really a deckbuilder's paradise. In the games I still have to figure out what kind of deck my opponent is, even when I know their colors already.
Excellent set so far, loads of ways to do sweet and powerful stuff. Definitely big upside not having a bunch of unbeatable bombs as well. Didn’t play much during the previous sets because the gameplay was terrible, this feels very refreshing and well designed.
50:16 I think the reason Imperial Oath is as high as it is has less to do with the card itself and more to do with the deck that uses it. In my experience, it's never used in a traditional white deck but instead as a finisher in Bant Saga control decks. Essentially, the game is already deterministically over by the time it is cast.
Hey come on now Luis's Unregistered Hyper-Cam 3000ZX-no regrets is a quality bit of kit. It's vintage, and we all know that's his jam. Anyway I don't know if I want to see his frequent nose rummaging in HD. #everybody picks their nose
I very much agree with Marshall's opinion in the context of the Dragon spirits and that if you fall behind in this set you're not screwed. They play Ao and you're line ok better get busy, they play troxyll and you're like fml
I love the design of most vehicles overall, but I do agree with Marshall that there really hasn't been a good middle ground with them, at least not recently. We've gotten some fantastic ones that have been very strong in both limited and constructed such as Esika's Chariot or Reckoner Bankbuster, but there are also a whole bunch of them, especially in this set, that haven't performed well at all. I've got a feeling that vehicles may make another substantial reappearance in The Brothers' War set, hopefully there we will see the archetype become more playable, at least in Limited.
Black Red with 2 of the RB skull artifacts is almost impossible to lose with, imo. especially if you throw the 1R 2/2 in as well that can make 3/1 haste tokens. Ridiculous value and really only loses to fliers or boardwipes.
also really like how good one drops have become. even like 2 years ago you were doing fine if you just never ever played a one drop, now they are really overtaking 2 drops even. also vehicles i think just arent great designs for limited. the fact that they cant be interacted with at sorcery speed really makes it very swingy, either they arent worth the effort of crewing or just run you over unreasonably fast
That's why it's a heuristic, not a hard-and-fast rule. It's meant to serve as a rough guideline for beginners, helping them to draft a deck that, even if not the best in the format, at least affects the battlefield and can hold its own.
KETO has the same value as BREAD to me. I was surprised when the said bread was so bad, then proceeded to suggest something incredibly similar. Best way to draft is and always has been pick cards you want to play with, cards that synergize with those cards, and then cards that fill holes in your deck.
I've gone 1-2 twice in this archetype. I think another issue weakening the deck is a lot of the removal is enchantments. I've had someone do 3 arrests to my creatures and they still lost overall. It's a slower deck in a somewhat more speedy format. If the good vehicles come, it's worth trying though.
My experience has been this is a find the bomb format. I’ve lost to Jin several games already where I had no chance due to auto counter spell and quickly overwhelmed with double everything. Got an answer - cool, got two? Maybe I’ve just been unlucky - variance happens - but I was so excited by this set and so put down so hard it has deflated me completely.
20:40 the funny thing is I had Mythic blue dragon P1P1, but I picked Blossom Prancer over it and had 0 regrets. Win rates on 17lands also support this. In fact, checking the data again, Atsushi is the lowest of the mythic dragons and beaten by several good commons, so... I'd be careful about saying "windmill slam 1st pick".
I'd be careful about following data off a cliff though. Mythic rares are often overdrafted or forced into decks that can't support them. Kairi's (Blue mythic dragon) "Games not draw WR" is 49.9%, while blossom prancer's is 53.8%. This is a larger difference than their Game in hand win rate, and suggests to me people are playing Kairi is a situation where they probably shouldn't be. P1P1, I still think Kairi's the better pick. Also supporting this is Kairi's "Average last seen" of pack 1.25, while blossom prancer is 2.94. Nobody's passing Kairi, even when they should in pack 2/3.
@@donanderson3653 I mean sure, following data off a cliff is bad, but is so is following the Rarity Symbol off a cliff lol. Kairi is an impactful 6-drop that does something when it dies. Blossom Prancer is an impactful 5-drop that does something when it ETBs. They're definitely both in consideration, and with green being such a strong colour overall, and the sheer number of Enchantment synergy decks in the set, I'm happy to go with Blossom Prancer.
@@WontonTV Sure, you shouldn't blindly draft every mythic, but this isn't "Hidetsugu Consumes All" we're talking about here, it's Kairi. It's undeniably a bomb, and I think the comparison of "Well, they're both impactful on the board" sort of flattens the difference in their power as creatures. Kairi is a 6/6 flier with okay protection. The ward 3 actually can help a lot vs. 4 mana removal like twisted embrace and tamiyo's compleation, which are some of the only cards that remove it. As a 6/6 flier, almost nothing can trade with it, and green struggles to fight it. It also completely ends the game in ~3 turns if it's not answered. Blossom prancer is a 4/4 with reach. If the board is stalled, playing blossom prancer just further stalls it. It also has no protection, and isn't terribly difficult to fight. It's an efficient 2-for-1, but nothing more. Obviously they're both good cards, but I think the difference in their power is pretty obvious, and I'd be careful about an analysis that starts and ends at "Well blossom prancer's GIH win rate is better, so I better pick it".
I've conceded about 5 times to that dragon coming out alone. Sometimes you just can't deal with it. I would never first pick Blossom Prancer over it P1P1. It's hard to handle with ward, flying and a massive 6/6 body with death triggers. They don't compare although Blossom Prancer is awesome and is a great value.
MID was really great, not sure which one is better though. still mad MID has such a short time while VOW, which imo was waaaay worse lasted so much longer
Just finished another premier draft where “Covert Technician” absolutely over performed. I think that card is a fair bit better then you guys gave it credit for in the set review. There is a good amount of 1 & 2 drop artifacts you want to play anyway and since you are actively looking to play 1 drops getting this down as early as t2 is not out of the question. Also a 2/4 is pretty hard to block efficient early on, so getting in 2 or even more hits is possible and then the game is basically over. Highlight was slamming this T2 of a dockside chef, cheating in a virus beetle, getting in another hit T3 cheating in another beetle,...
