Ketner's was the original store where Ralph Ketner started Food Town, later named Food Lion. Corporate offices are there in Salisbury. Also Elizabeth Dole still has a home on Fulton St. A famous old movie star had a home there also, Sidney Blackmer. That Dairy Qeen is open year round nowadays, use to close for the winter months. You absolutely have to visit Spencer Shop's the way you love trains, it has a full roundhouse and museum. Take care and keep em coming.

    At 14:42, that looks like Wrigley's chewing gum, Spearmint maybe. They had Spearmint (white label), Double mint (green label) and Juicy Fruit (yellow label). I think they also made "Big Red" chewing gum which was a cinnamon flavor. They used to advertise Big Red all the time back in the 80's on tv during football season.

    That sign on the side of the building for spearmint gum, I could see the "Y" at the end of the first word and it was "Wrigley's" As for what you thought was a storm cellar, you were half right. It's an entrance to the cellar. Those doors were for delivery trucks to make their deliveries to the store without interrupting the customers in the store. New York City and Philadelphia still has many of those delivery entrances however theirs are flatter and people walk over them. Some when you open the outside door has like an elevator to bring the merchandise down to the cellar.

    The blue building that comes into frame at 0:24 is the former Belk-Harry department store. The Belks of Charlotte partnered with the Harry Brothers in 1902, one of the earliest examples of the unique arrangement Belk constructed with many other Southern merchants to leverage buying power and standardize merchandising. I'm so old that I can recall when the only place you could get a "soda", in the South, was from a soda fountain (think soda jerks) at places like Woolworths. If came in a bottle and was nonalcoholic it was called a "soft drink" or, depending on how old a person was or how "country" they were such bottled drinks like Pepsi, Coca-Cola, RC Cola, etc. were also referred to as "belly washes"....Since I'm a '54 model myself, and was heavily influenced by grandparents, aunts, and uncles who sprung from the late 19th century, I grew up calling such bottled drinks by both names. In fact, folks back in my youth at least, were able to tell you were not native to the South if you referred to a bottled nonalcoholic drink as a "pop" as it was a pronoun AND adjective that was associated with folks from "up North". I have to admit that even today, at 67 I get a bit rapped around the proverbial axle when I hear anybody use the term "pop" when referring to a soft drink not dispensed from a fountain of one kind or another. But then I also know WHY "pop" came be referred to as "pop".

      @@TheDailyWoo true. Although I assume Amazon would have killed em soon anyway. Fun fact: we at Borders knew that Barnes & Noble spied on where Borders was shopping for new locations and would try to build there first, so we'd pretend to be looking in really terrible places and BN would take the bait!

    "Use to describe your surroundings. Your street is your neck of the woods, but so is your region: if you live in New Hampshire, you might describe the entire New England area as your neck of the woods. The phrase comes from the sense of as a strip of land. In Britain, this refers to land with water on both sides, but early Americans used it to mean "a settlement in the woods."

    Is the Cheerwine we get in FL fountain machines the real deal? I’ve heard it was different. Anyone know for sure?

    • @DisAmy33
      @DisAmy33 2 года назад +1

      It is the real deal but with all fountain machines you know how the formula can taste different depending on what their settings are, I find it’s hit or miss, for Cheerwine especially it seems to be really more particular because of I think of the flavoring… The carbonation to syrup ratio has to be just right! I think it’s best out of a bottle, can or of course glass bottle!

Western Steer steakhouse and Mom 'n Pops restaurants from Claremont NC comes to mind, too - they both used to be common in the southeast, with MnP being similar to Cracker Barrel.
