"他[...地]打篮球。" can describes his attitude or mood on playing basketball. Eg. 他很认真地(seriously)打篮球。他很快乐地(happily)打篮球。"很好地" is not clear about his attitude or mood. But "打篮球打得很好"is a clear evaluation on how well he plays basketball.
Can I say "她学习学得很努力。"? The normal sentence is "她学习很努力。" How do I know exactly when to use 得? You say 得 describes how well someone does something but I still don't get it. Can you make it clearer?

发现=find，discover（visual sense）
发觉=perceive，realize，feel（perception，emotion，feeling）
