just another piece of advice that I used to fight my way through college with ADHD, if you are frequently getting sidetracked when writing an essay, go to your local (or on campus) library's quiet area, and if you can't think of anything to write, go do a quiz or another essay that is due until you think of an idea for that essay, I got many assignments done in advance because I would take advantage of my downtime by doing another task that was due.

@@Daryl_Phillips_ it 100% is real, stop spreading misinformation....
it is not just a mindset, it's frequent hyperactivity, short or irritable atttention span and of course socio occupational dysfunction.
that is not your mindset, that is your mental health.
My ADHD makes me frequently leave essential items at home on my way to work, like my notebook to even sometimes i go out the door without car keys.
Just because you do not see signs of ADHD doesn't mean it's not real
You likely have a lesser variant of ADHD that do not face the same problems as me.

a tip i recently heard about adhd (or rather symptoms of adhd, but works on me and i have enough symptoms that they diagnosed me with it)
hypractivity is the result of fear of boredom, and often escapism or dissociation. if you can bear to be in the moment and bear being bored, youll decrease your need to distract yourself. problem is, the harder your life is, or the less you accept your current situation, the harder this is to do. but remember, even if your life is "shit", people can thrive in every situation. there are 8 year olds who lost their parents in the gaza war who skip happily across the street because theyve been told their parents body has been found and will be burried. in my opinion being aware of your surroundings, even if they're bad, is better than shutting yourself in a pile of distraction, because then you can't interact with anything that's real and you can't make real changes
ironically this is once again the mindfulness meditation advice repackaged, but with lower stakes, because typically they talk about 30 minutes of meditation or something, but thats basically impossible, with adhd ill be proud of you if you can do 30 seconds

If small steps were all it takes to break procrastination, then procrastination wouldn't be a thing.

Doing things in small steps is pretty much the corner stone of psychology. CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) in some way, shape or form is part of pretty much any effective psychological treatment. Of course there is more to it than that since if it worked for everyone there wouldn't be a need for anything else.

This is so true. Every time I procrastinate and finally do something much later than I should have, I realize that the only real obstacle was starting it. The thought of starting is always the scariest part because once I begin, the work unravels and keeps flowing. This applies to everything for me-whether it’s doing my job, tackling chores, practicing piano, or drawing. They all start as “let me just do it for 2mins” and a whole hour passes and I still go on. But until this video, I did not realise I could consciously do it. So thanks!

I recently started going to the gym. Not necessarily working out, just going to the gym. I tell myself that even if I just sit on my phone for half an hour, that's fine. The trick is what I do when I get there. Once dressed up and on the floor, I tell myself "I'm already here, so might as well get a couple reps in" and then it just kinda happens.
Tricking myself like this has resulted in me doing more strength training in the last 2 weeks than I have in the last 4 years combined. What's most surprising is I actually find myself somewhat excited to go. Fingers crossed I can keep this going :)

The first task is the hardest, but once the stone is rolling, it's getting more and more momentum.
It's like "Jeez. I have no dishes. MIght as well wash them and free the sink", and once you're done, you clean the surfaces, realise you also have a lot of clothes to wash and throw those in the washer. And before you know it, you have done the dishes, the washing, cleaned and tidied and maybe even started working on a DIY project in your garage with all the momentum.

That was me today. Couldn't get work done for like two weeks, and all of a sudden, today I did a bunch of housework all at once. First the dishes, then taking out the garbage and recycle, laundry, and some cleaning. It felt like it went by in a matter of minutes and by the end of it the momentum was very strong indeed.

What helps me: Start working on your task right when you wake up. Try to reduce or eliminate distractions-yes, even music that motivates you. Focus solely on the task you need to complete or continue, without any external "stimulation." When I start or continue my project this way, I can stick with it for a good 2-4 hours of quality work before moving on to something else. Let the time compound. It's unrealistic to expect yourself to work 8 straight hours without a break, but i get it.

As James Clear explainmed in his book Atomic Habits, there is such a thing as designing enviroment and overalpping habits. When you stard your day with something small, and you are willing to see this as your success, the harder things are going to be much easier. For example you could making your bed and having a morning routine. I start my day by taking a shower, brushing teeth, and doing streching exercises for about 20 minutes - and i literally see these activites as one my goals and responsibilites. Then, when I start my workout at ghym, or i go work, I find it much easier. TTry designing your enviroment, and overlapping habbits my friends.

These ‘symptons’ removal advices still applies. As someone who is largely aware of the concept behind inertia, these distractions will still haunt you from time to time and it you give in, you’ll be stuck in it again.
Why? Pavlov’s experiment says that you can associate a certain emotion with a certain activity. Productivity = not fun, social media & games = more fun. Brain: I want to do things that are more fun.
It’s the same rule behind dieting, if you buy the junk food at the grocery store, you already lost the battle. If you truly want to stave off procrastination, learn to see your hardwork as a good and happy thing, remove anything that you feel like is taking up too much of your time and is making you have post-clarity (ie post game clarity).
Be always aware of the rule of inertia, Pavlov’s experiment and the (unnamed rule) of getting rid of anything that is harmful to your cause. Fall into good habits and schedules, if it gets stressful, pick one month, say: ‘I’ll let loose this month’ and go feral. You must keep schedule, routines and good habits, be aware.

the quote at the end really opened my eyes; never has a quote made me sit down and think so much. i always get in my own head about things, and tend to overthink a LOT, which leads to lots of procrastination. the beginning of the video really described my life right now perfectly-- i know exactly what i need to be doing, i've gone through the most optimal plan for success in my head over and over (almost always planning it out instead of doing the task), yet the climb just seems way to steep to be possible. recently, i've started to realise that i tend to give up way too early. if i even sense a little bit of a chance that i might not succeed, i let myself fail instantly. this video really opened my eyes. ive never really commented on a video before like this but i just really want to say thank you for opening my eyes so much and helping my brain. sorry im sorta ranting lol but im really really really thankful. thank you. also the editing was really good :)

We are doing these to let ourselves be free without forcing it upon ourselves. That is the key, the reason why the 2-minute rule and reducing the stakes works is because we are allowing ourselves to be a little lazy in an accepting yet ignorant manner. As Carl Jung once said: Whatever you resist, persists. Similarly, whatever you force upon yourself to do, your mind has a tendency to give an more equally stronger persistence. In Newton's Words: For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.

I love how short the video is. Perfectly in line with its demographic; the procrastinators/ADHD people. I've seen tons of videos having the same topics as this one and it's usually 20-30 minutes long which is ironic since even such a simple task of watching them is a hurdle mostly affected struggle with.
We cope with our inability to focus by focusing on other stuff which in turn leaves us to focus again on something entirely different, so watching a 20-30 minute video that talks about your insecurities and flaws is somewhat not effective on grabbing your intended audience.

It's a big project to make a game, so I started trying something new. I would load up my project and say "I'll just make a few sprites today." This would quickly balloon into an hour or more of work without realizing. It feels good to be back into it again, doing what I love

Man, that's helpful. I am an artist, and my friends always told me that I'm lazy. I have too much potential, and all I would do is draw anime characters and to not lie they are simple, so I'll draw more complex things. I'll do my best thanks bro

Finally, a video like this that isn't just waffle for 10-15 minutes. This seems like something that might actually work. I'mma go find out

It's so simple and yet so true. Don't try to do something that takes weeks at a steady pace in just one day.

Hi, thank you for the video. Short and clear.
    P.S.
Did you yourself procrastinate for a long time, before making the video?)

Easiest solution: Wake up at 6 am (with enough sleep) and get ready then start before 6:30 am .

Hhhaah . Never works. One might get up early and then watch videos or stroll around and get nothing done . Its not that easy

I was doubting this video at first, but decided to watch it and found it is true. I've found that if I start small, I have enough inertia to keep moving forward and complete the entire task.
