I Found Mold in My Basement! - New Insulation, New Drywall, New Pretty Paint! - Thrift Diving

  • I knew we had mold in our basement, but I didn't know how extensive the problem would be when I opened up the basement wall next to the exterior door where water has been leaking into our basement for years. Thankfully, the problem wasn't TOO bad, but still required an extensive repair.
See how I did DIY mold removal in my basement, installed new insulation, installed a new basement exterior door (because the old one was rotted along the frame), and replaced the drywall. I also painted the walls a gorgeous Temperate Taupe.
NOTE: Take precautions when dealing with mold. Wear the appropriate masks rated for mold spores. Turn off your HVAC system to prevent spreading mold spores around your home. Call a professional to help if you need it! :)
NOTE: Use a stud-finder and other necessary tools to make sure you're not cutting into wires or pipes. Turn off electricity first if necessary for cutting in your drywall.

(Just for future reference/knowledge 😊 Definitely NOT criticism!)
Buy a bottle of "Mold Control". We've had to clean up mold in our bathroom before. Usually home improvement stores have this. It doesn't have an overpowering odor like bleach does. It comes in an easy to use white spray bottle. No scrubbing is required. All you do is spray directly onto the mold spores. Mold loves dark, damp areas. After you cover it in Mold Control place a fan in the room to help circulate the air and dry that area up. Also, get a light source. The brighter the better! Shine it directly on the mold for as long as you can. Then basically you just babysit it for a few days reapplying the Mold Control to spots that are being stubborn. My husband is a Firefighter/Haz-Mat tech. When the environmental company he works for has to go clean up mold they buy cases of Mold Control. If you do the above combined steps, like they do, it will get rid of it. 🙂
**Side note: PLEASE NEVER EVER scrape or sand black mold! I know it may seem like a good idea to scrape it off to get it to go away. For jobs that require anything like that my husband has to wear a heavy respirator mask to do so. Scraping black mold makes it angry and disperses its spores and can make you really sick! I'm not trying to scare you. I am also a firefighter. Taking care of people is what I do. I would rather you be informed than sick.**
Best of luck, now go kick that molds butt 😉

However, this inspires me. I've had companies give estimates and they quoted me at $15k min and all the while I'm thinking, that with the right equipment, safety precautions etc., I just *might* be able to do it myself or bring on a team and a much cheaper rate. Thanks for the inspiration and motivation! = )

Although I will say, I do work for a restoration company and deal with water damage and mold everyday, the class taught us that bleach does not kill mold it actually feeds it!!! I suggest using a product called benefect, u can get it on Amazon and it’s a botanical product it kills mold, viruses bacteria’s etc this product is made from lemon oil and thyme oil and is totally safe to use in hospitals, daycares schools safe for children pets and elderly, never use bleach!!!! But all in all doinf this video wearing the PPE and properly at that!! I love seeing that!!! Most videos don’t show that and it’s very important!!! Good job!!

HAHA, I don't mean to scare you! :) A good piece of advice is to be wary of homes that have water intrusion. We knew there were water issues when we moved in here, but I think the inspector downplayed its importance. So just make sure that when you buy a home, look for signs of water: water stains, musty smells, poor grading around the home that makes water travel to the low spots of your house, bad gutters and downspouts that are dumping water next to the foundation, etc. Make sure the homeowner addresses any problems with water before you move in. You'll save yourself a few headaches! :) Oh--and have you seen my questions list you should be asking when you buy a house? Here you go! thriftdiving.com/10-questions-to-ask-before-buying-a-house/

We bought a house once that had a wide open attic.. just huge, but they hadn't finished it. So we did, when I say we, I mean my husband and I drywalled and insulated then he left me mudding and texturing. I, 7 months pregnant, got the bright idea to hand texture the ceiling with swirls. :) Hours and hours of standing on a stool with my arms above my head swirling one way then the other just because crazy hormones made me want a plaster swirl look ceiling. Not saying it wasn't pretty, but never again.....lol My bedroom was beautiful though.

Thank you so much for this video! My husband and I are new homeowners and our sump pump failed and the basement flooded. We were doing a flood cut and found nasty black mold. This video will be so helpful as we do our own repairs, cleaning, and remodel!

I loved how you tackled the problems encountered. Great work and spirit! Wonder woman you are! Being an owner of a very ld house taught me one thing: "there are no small fixes in old houses". Always, always, always, plan at least 2x as much time even if you are trying just to change a tap ;) I am looking forward to the next episode to see what else you have done there. Lots of love from Sardinia!

Major props to you for sharing the failures! Awesome job with the repairs, I run a fishroom and I’m preparing myself (watching RUclips videos) to replace one moldy section I forgot to paint (wise me, thinking I would do it later)
    All the best!

Hi Serena, Our 1st house was built on a slab of cement.. the ground wasn’t leveled away from the house, when my friend & I gutted a bedroom, outside wall, mold, live ants/hundreds of thousands.. 😮😧😦😶.. after sucking them up with the shopvac & cleaning up the disgusting mess, I pressed right onto new Sheetrock all around the room, window etc.. man, I sure was glad that job was completed.. wow.. Our 1st house was learning curve for 2nd home.
We built a cape cod modular, finished upstairs and basement, main floor was finished.. Hubby an I did 95%, it cost way too much to hire, this way, we could afford the things we wanted an made our dollar go much farther. I learned how to do all that an even laid a hardwood floor..
I think your much better at using the power tools than i am ☺️. You are doing a fantastic job around your home ! 💜 I subscribed immediately as I love DIY projects. ☺️ You’re a delight, pretty, wonderfully honest, all traits of values that I adore..
Take care & God Bless, Chris-Raleigh NC

WOW - when you say it is not really the way to do this (by cutting out the bottom plates of wood) -you do a fantastic job, and it certainly looks well done to me. I cannot believe how perfect the sizes you cut out, fit, right down to a mm. Well done you!!! I can understand your frustration with the door not fitting right.

I use to help my step father who was a builder. He would have been impressed with your work and perseverance. It's always a minefield, taking on a job like that, as you never know what's hidden behind those painted walls.

It’s been a daunting task but watching you do this big repair mostly on your own makes me feel a bit better about my own repair work that I’m preparing to do. I can’t wait to see how you fix up the rest of your basement!!!

You can totally do it, Alex! Trust me--it's nerve wrecking when getting started, especially if you're not sure of how to tackle it, but once you keep going and see the progress you're making, you gain the confidence. You can't see in the video but I was nervous as heck as I was removing the drywall! I didn't know what to expect and if I had the ability to correct it. Whew! But I did it and you can too! :) Keep me posted in how it goes!
