First of all, nobody owns right to the word 'genocide.' And people are not protesting Israel of Jewish people, but rather what Israeli government is doing in Gaza which is committing genocide against mostly children. As a matter of fact, the majority of organizers of student protests are Jewish students.

Well hard not to be moved to protest when there's a genocide going on. I would also say that a very large amount of big and successful protest movements in history have had spurts of violent confrontation same with this one although overall it is quite peaceful. (Does that excuse violence, no, but it doesn't either disqualify the protests or what they are fighting for namely an end to the injustice and violence against the Palestinian people)
Yeah, Israel shoulda just took it on the chin after they were attacked. The arab colonizers would love that. And the Persian wannabe colonizers are jealous. However...this is a Big 'But"! There is absolutely ZERO justification for targeting Jewish students and other people who are here in this country. Actually, they shouldn't be blocking ANY student, staff or Professor who are trying to get to their classes and meetings. The right to free speech that they are using to justify their actions does NOT give them the right to harm anyone else. Prevent other students (Jewish or not) from going to their classes, taking finals, trying to finish up their work so they can graduate is most definitely harmful to them! Many students have taken this as an opportunity to do whatever they want and psychologically, crowd mentality is clear. They should've sat in protest and missed their own classes etc. They NEVER had the right to block other people from doing what THEY wanted to do. This isn't an all or nothing proposition. And, the situation is not black or white.
I think we can assume that students are mostly reacting to what they see on the news and, yes, social media. We are shown bloody Palestinian children crying under piles of rubble. We are shown babies starved to death in hospitals. These kids react reflexively and usually aren't bothered to try to find the whole story. I agree.. if kids...anyone..wants to protest....doing so peacefully is the ONLY way that other people will hear our message.
