I was supposed to see him live last year in August. He cancelled it because of health problems and it got replaced to February in this year. But this year it got replaced again, to August, due to his hip surgery. So unfortunate. A very sad loss. He wrote some of the funniest songs I ever heard in my life, and also some of the most sad I ever heard. He was an amazing songwriter. Damn Covid-19 took a great one away...
Us too. We had our Tree of Forgiveness tour shirts ready for the show in June in Calgary....looking on the bright side, we will always have his music!
I’m glad you found John Prine’s music. His 1971 album “John Prine” is as basic to my classic rock years memories as anything. Illegal Smile, Hello In There, Flag Decal, Paradise, Sam Stone, Angel From Montgomery,... so many great songs from the folky side.
John was a national treasure. I am a major fan of his. He will be sadly missed. R.I.P Wonderful video Larry.
Thanks for doing this one Larry.. I love John Prine.. his passing was so sad.. but his music will live forever.. All his albums are great..but I suggest his first self titled album and Bruised Orange.... great video...glen
My all-time favorite John Prine song is “Paradise” from his first, self titled album. It’s something that a lot of people will recognize once they’ve heard it, and a staple for bluegrass bands to play. It is one of the best environmental songs that I know of, and written from a perspective that most people can relate to, I think, without being preachy..
Thank you for looking at John Prine. I have been a fan for about 40 years, and it feels as though I have lost a friend. I was lucky enought to see him a few years ago. You should check out his first album, which is fantastic. Some of his greatest songs are on the album: Sam Stone, Hello In There, Paradise, Angel From Montgomery, Illegal Smile, etc. Listen to Sam Stone next. Your reaction today was terrific, thank you.
Laugh and cry. . . John Prine does that with much of his work. Check out Bruised Orange and The Missing Years, but really he's rarely put out a weak album. You have lots of great songs to discover. I miss John Prine already. We need his wit and wisdom more than ever. I hope he's smoking that cigarette in heaven.
So sad that he is gone. :(
This one of his i think you'll like and likely recognize.
He has written some great songs. Try the "Bruised Orange" album, or his debut album.
A lot of John's songs will make you both laugh and cry. Heck, he has some lines that will make you do both! The man was a genius. I found John's music about 20 years ago, but really got into it after our son was diagnosed with brain cancer. John got us through a lot of tough times in the hospital. Thanks for sharing this! I can tell you are a fan already!
I've never heard him before Larry but that song was great, very clever and very moving and I think you should do a review of more of John Prine's material, the man definitely has talent and thank you for introducing his music to me and to us,I look forward to hearing more of John Prine and more of your reaction to him, thanks again. Bob.
Please do more John Prine. If this got to you his catalogue will really, really touch you in the best way
I still cant believe he’s gone...this song kills me over and over again💔. I owe this wonderful man so much!
The lyric about...'smoking a cigarette nine miles long' harkens back to his smoking days, and later he would develop cancer and couldn't smoke anymore. I read somewhere in a late interview that John said he would try to stand as close to smokers to catch a whiff. He enjoyed smoking that much and then unable to, making the lyric more poignant. I've listened to John Prine since I was in high school, circa 1970-1974. I saw him at Appalachian State University in Boone NC in the fall of 1975. He came out with only himself and a guitar. The college audience expected a band and actually booed. Fortunately, the crowd quietened down and he played for approximately two hours. I don't remember if there was an encore, but if so, I imagine it would be 'Far From Me', off his first album and, hands down, my favorite song by John. He also does Steve Goodman's song 'My Old Man', which is a song that will make one both cry and laugh, all in one song - from a tribute album to Steve Goodman from the 80s.
His first album, self-titled, from 1972, get it if u can. Every song is wonderful and special. It has Sam Stone, Hello In There, Dear Abby, Paradise. He was only I'm his 20's when he recorded it, and what insights into the human condition for a young person. He was a veteran and working for the post office in Chicago when it came out. Sam Stone and Hello In There always kick me in the gut. Sam Stone about a Vietnam vet and his drug problem after being wounded; and Hello In There about senior citizens makes me cry everytime, even though I've listened to it since 1976 when my brother played the album for me.
Peace and be well!
What better song could a man write at the end of his life? John Prine was such a gift to the world.
"I Remember Everything"....his last song from his living room...youtube it...you probably already know it, but just in case...
This is a good discography to dive into, Larry. "Hello In There" is one of the greatest songs ever written in my opinion.
I am a Kentuckian so John Prine has a special place in my heart. He was so gifted - I recommend Sam Stone and Paradise. I love your review, thanks for giving him the respect he deserves for his life’s work.
Listening to this, even before he died, this song just shows he was at peace. He didn't want to go but he was ready. RIP John
Check out Sam Stone, paradise, Hello In There, Donald and Lydia which are all on his first album..Lake Marie, Jesus The Missing Years, In Spite Of Ourselves is a great song about a couple.. you will love that one. All the best ..glen
depressing song but a good one - "hole ihis arm . . " Damn
@@NaughtyVampireGod John wrote about the common man..sometimes with humour, sometimes melancholy,, sad. But always honest and relatable.
In spite of ourselves. All the best. Angel of Montgomery. She is my everything. Im still trying to listen to more myself. He was great
Love John Prine, he's sorely missed.
He's right, this would be a great swan song from John....until you hear his LAST SONG, "I remember everything" from his living room and on youtube.... He was the greatest....caught him in "75 and followed him through the chicago bars and all the way until his death...it's been hard to listen to his songs these days, I cry so much....I love watching the reaction shows because I see "me" back in high school...i was so lucky to hear him early and get to learn from him... Like Dylan said about Guthrie, "You could just live by his words and live a great life"....
Please... “My Mexican Home” ... “Take the Star Out of the Window” ... ‘Sour Grapes” ... too many amazing songs to check out. ‘’ Let’s Talk Dirty in Hawaiian” . I’m so jealous you get to hear them for the 1st time... but glad I grew up w/ him from the first album and saw him dozens of times & met him several and got to hang out some. A truly amazing human being . RIP John ! 🎸😇🎧
John Prine was and always will be remembered as one of if not the greatest song writers of all time. Really he didn't have a bad song but I recommend Don't bury me , souvenirs, & paradise for the new listener. Love you John will miss you always!
Dear Abby and Grandpa was a Carpernter are two more to add to that list.
I've just seen this video and have to say there are so many more you must listen to. Early 70's Sam Stone, Hello in there (covered by dozens of people) with Iris Dement singing in spite of ourselves (funny) and so many more. Please check them out you won't be disappointed.
You must listen to his last recording, "I Remember Everything", it became his only number one song recorded by him. I grew up with JP, his passing felt like a family member. BTW, I'm just down the 401 from you!
In Spite of Ourselves, Grandpa was a Carpenter, Sam Stone
Man. If this one gets you, just wait for Sam Stone, I remember everything, hello in there and Summers End. Destroys me every time.
You will be hooked. Try; Hello In There, Sam Stone, Summer's End , in Spite of Ourselves, Your Flag Won't Get you Into Heaven.
Great reaction! Can you do a 10 scary beatles songs?
Illegal Smile. Paradise. Dear Abby. Sam Stone.
Please listen to “Summers End”
Save me one of them 9 mile cigarettes, John. I may get there.
Nice video. I’ve never heard of that singer. I like his voice but not so much the song.
This is far from his best song but it reflects his sense of humor.
