Bruce had a very contentious relationship with his father and this is about a son leaving the family home to move away and make his own decisions.

Springsteen wrote the song in 1977 along with the songs from Darkness on the Edge of Town. He played the song during the tour for that album -- as seen here Houston, Texas 1978 -- and then put the song onto his next album, The River, released in 1980. "Papa, now I know the things you wanted that you could not say \ But won't you just say goodbye? It's Independence Day" -- Was Papa dying or refusing to hang up the phone? Springsteen wrote another song, "4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)", about what Americans call "Independence Day" and released it on his second album, The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle. The song is more well known today as "Sandy".

He just said « I wrote during the darkness album » meaning during the « Darkness on the edge of town » album which was released in 1978. It was his fourth record. The song was on « The river album » with minor changes.
