Fun Fact: 14:32 Coffee Bean is present as an unlockable plant in the Chinese Version of Plants Vs. Zombies 2 and he has wings in that version of the game that are almost identical to the wings used in those placeholder graphics.
5:50 maybe when you use golden items the plants give you more money? and then for the golden plant food its possible that it would make the plants grow faster
The grey and red box is probably a testing for planting plants or mushrooms on tiles thats what I believe. That black wavy line is probably like the conveir belt instead of the water it kinda look like that.
How about you also do a lost bits series dedicated to the garden warfare 1 (or maybe the others) because there were two beta builds shown to people of the gw1 so maybe there's lots of content lost.
Thing is, that almost all games had a developing journey like this. PvZ is just one of the games that reveals enough unused content to have sucha big insight. :3
Some corrections I'd like to point out: 5:17: I should mention that the filenames for these were called "Caltrop_body(#)_stone.png" which "Caltrop" was also seen within the Spikeweed's regular graphics, whic possibly means that was Spikeweed's early name. 8:10: This is in fact an early diamond, but I'd also like to point out that the Slot Machine minigame uses this, as well as the DS version of the game uses this as the main diamond sprite. 8:21: This is the pearl seen from the Java version (aka the version of Insaniquarium from 2001) that is dispensed by the "Niko" tank pet which is currency in the game for levels, and based on PVZ using Insaniquarium's code internally, this would have also been used for currency as well at some point. I would say the build featured in the 2005 screenshot probably used it. 8:35: You are right about the turnips being implemented for a period of time (as seen in the 2005 screenshot), but this specific graphic was seen in the 2010 presentation in the July 2006 build when a plant is eaten by a zombie as this "afterlife" sequence or something. I would actually like to have seen this specific animation be remade into the final game as there is several little quirks inside PVZ that made it unique. 10:00: I was trying to argue with the people at TCRF about this being used, but I didn't get any response from when I last checked. I do know for a fact that this is from Insaniquarium and is in fact reused for the Zombiquarium and Aquatic Zen Garden by the top. 10:45: Notably, these are just rescaled Gargantuar hands and so are the legs that were also covered. 11:05: I also tried to argue that these are possibly not Zen Garden cursors and that these are used in the 2005 build(s) for growing the plants. The reticle crosshair cursor is also possibly not for Cob Cannon, but I do know this also was taken from the Java version of Insaniquarium for shooting at aliens. Perhaps these COULD have been later reused, but we don't know yet. 14:03: I did upload some concept art a little while ago that there was 2 different Blover variants in mind, one which would slow down zombies and one which was the Blover and had some other names such as "Guster," "Windclover," and "Blawver" to which the designed concept of Blover was seen with dizzy/hypnotic eyes while the regular "Clover" variant just had regular eyes. So perhaps maybe they either had those 2 variants in for the game or George Fan (the main game designer, as well as being the original concept artist and the guy who also drew the early crude graphics) and Rich Werner (the chosen artist for the game) just gave in and the Clover variant was scrapped entirely and redesigned Blover with the Clover appearance. I should also say that stuff is still being searched like concept art for example, and I found some a while ago and posted it on the site and I think you should check the Prerelease page again as there is SEVERAL plants that were not put into the game. 14:31: It is noted that in Rich Werner's concept designs for the plants when he was hired as lead artist, he also gave Coffee Bean wings as well based on George Fan's design. I guess the leaf did make more sense considering we don't info why George Fan gave him wings to being with. I guess that also can be a question to ask him during some sort of special occasion. 14:50: On the PVZ Wiki for PVZ2's concept art and prerelease material page, I DID see a screenshot of an alleged early PVZ2 screenshot that showed off Cob Cannon, but looks to have fit on a single tile. The same screenshot also showed an early design for a Gargantuar in George's "crude" art style for PVZ1. I would also like to say that I was in contact with a Beta tester of the game a few months ago and they were able to send me titlescreens of the Lawn of the Dead 2007 Halloween build, and the Zom-Botany build in full quality and uploaded them over to TCRF. I'm still on the hunt to try and get more info as best as I can, maybe get the resources out or potentially even get a prototype or two.
PvZ as a series is still so underrated. Garden Warfare 2, PvZ 2 and Battle for Neighborville, although they have a very dedicated group of followers, are still extremely underrated.
@@THGMR-ox7sd I mean in general for GW2, it could’ve had a much bigger player base if more people tried it because of how good of a shooter it is. Within the PvZ community, it’s probably a bit overrated
I think PvZ 2 and BFN are both cases of “If EA and Popcap would listen to the fans, it could be great, but instead they decided to just do their own thing which lead to a large portion of fans losing interest.” Essentially, fan input good, microtransaction bad.
The grid pattern was likely for testing the screen resolution of UI elements on various devices. If the resolution is correct, the pattern would appear normal. If the resolution is not correct the lines would create a moire pattern. Source: I've done this.
That "winged" coffee bean is also seen in some early official artwork for the plant too, and the fact that that specific piece of art comes up so often suggests that the design change was made last-minute.
6:37 this could be lines that the animation takes place on, for example: The red square is the pivot point and the lines signify the axis where stuff can move. Very good for making simple and smooth animations
I was playing through the old beta build and the explodo nut was there but when planted acted just like a wallnut (might have been a placeholder for the bowling mini game as you could have needed the plant unlocked to have it shown in conveyor belt levels) and the giant wallnut with no extra hp from what I’ve seen and doesn’t cover 2 lanes either
In the 2008 Bloom & Doom build, it's stated to be a plant that explodes when a zombie eats it. But after a zombie eats it, it does nothing. As the bowling game goes on development, the devs used the explode-o-nut for the mini-game. So it's an unfinished feature in the beta. The OG explode-o-nut has been later on revived as a PVZ2 plant.
Fun Fact: I, Zombie is actually present in the Chinese Version of Plants Vs. Zombies 2. Unrelated to I, Zombie, but the Chinese Version of Plants Vs. Zombies 2 also has a level editor/maker.
Here's a Fun Fact: The Unused Graphic for The Coffee Bean with Wings was Way Later used in the Chinese version of Plants Vs Zombies 2 which has the Coffee Bean as Version exclusive and they even made it look like Part of the Game
The rocks are used in a similar way to the unused theory in PVZ Garden Warfare 2, when you jump to a high area and a regular zombie can’t reach you, it will chuck a rock and run off.
14:18 In the Chinese version of PvZ 2, the Coffee Bean is used and has wings. It’s meant to wake up plants put to sleep by the Archmage Zombie (I think that is the name of the zombie) that appears in the Dark Ages.
3:40 I'm pretty sure they used the button graphics from Insaniquarium as placeholders for PvZ. Also we got the amazingly funny snorkle zombie minigame based on it, I didn't even know. xD

Notice how all of the old lane related stuff (the rocks, leaves, cannon reticle, etc) all seem to be equal height. It seems as if the lanes were originally going to be seen at a different angle, but it was later swapped out for a more over-head view, likely to make it easier to differentiate between them.
