    Are you mixing heavy music with epic guitar solos and leads? This video walks through my simple strategy for getting lead guitars to stand out in the mix and have an epic, soaring quality.
    I use this exact same approach to leads & solos on almost every song I mix. This video demonstrates the techniques in two different songs.

    Easy way to get that wide chorusing effect on guitar: Get the free Mercuriall chorus plugin and set depth to max, speed to min and mix to 9 o'clock. Boom, done.

      Double tracking with pretty similar takes can really have an interesting sound for riffs. For metal I have recently really focused on trying to get riffs and chords together as a single guitar play myself weather is be with hybrid picking or just picking. I did it without thinking about doing it and I wanted to work on it more which is pretty cool. Having 2 guitar parts can be good for later if you are with a band and the other guutar player likes what you played and can play it. If I were to play one of my recently made songs live, having a backing track including parts for where I added solo overtop or having some rythm parts on a backing track is a good way to play solo I think. I believe that having backing tracks for some things is ok.

    I almost always use an L1 on vocals and guitars since I saw your video using it on vocals a while back! Using it sparingly towards the end of my processing chain makes that little bit of difference that goes a long way. Your EQ checklist also helped a ton on my mixes.

    Really nice tutorial. Not many youtubers are giving away tutorials for solos. I really wish you would make a tutorial on how you approach it on a super brutal mix. Would you do the same thing but more aggressive on the L1? Would go as far as using a transient designer to give a little bit of pick attack? I always struggle with mixing lead on a 240bpm mix with tremolo picking and fast heel toes kicks.

      More 1-2k boost and possibly more 5k+. Possibly slightly more compression or limiting but not much different that this

      @@hardcoremusicstudio great tutorial. Always helps that the source is really good as well so you're not trying to polish a turd 😂. That first example sounded pretty close before processing I must say. So it's that cumulative effect of just spacing it out and getting it up above the rhythm tracks and so on. Gentle nudges towards the final product. Great video as always.

    I'm new to mixing and I have a question for anyone who wants to answer: isn't the same process to duplicate the lead track and sligtly pan them Left-right (20%) and adding a different delay to each track? This is what I usually do. I'd just like to know if it's basically the same thing but done manually.

    One of the things I'm curious about and I've not really seen discussed is when recording / mixing guitar solos, is it typical to have delay applied to the incoming signal or will it get recorded dry and have the delays applied afterwards? If it's on the incoming signal, would you still use this widening trick on the track?

  • @accentontheoff
    @accentontheoff 3 года назад +2

    Probably a very basic question, but do you reduce the levels/volume of the other backing stuff (esp the rhythm guitar) during the solo. Or does the solo effectively raise the volume of the entire track. Thanks for the video!

    • @accentontheoff
      @accentontheoff 2 года назад

      @Liam Thanks. Been out of it, so not figured it out yet. So, from what you are saying - if the volume of the backing stuff is x before the solo, we drop it to x-1 during the solo and once the solo is over bring it back to x?

  • @nicholasmkt
    @nicholasmkt 3 года назад

    Wouldn't be better (or easier) to use a compresor instead of automating the solo volume? This is a doubt I have since automation is a such surgical process that the result may be similar. Thanks

    • @BurntMcgurnt

    when you add the delay on each side, aren’t you concerned that the solo timing is thrown off?

    • @hardcoremusicstudio
      @hardcoremusicstudio  6 лет назад +4

      Nope, it's subtle in the mix and just used to add width and space. As a listener you don't really notice the echoes, it just sounds nice. Also with synced delays like this (quarter note, eighth, etc) they tend to blend into the mix and don't throw off timing.

    I have a theory, but please feel free to poke as many holes as you like. Instead of adding more mids to a lead guitar solo, what if once you've identified the mids you want enhanced, subtract them from the rhythm guitars instead of adding more? That way it's creating more space, rather than fighting existing frequencies.

    I dunno . . . .Seems to me that making the level of every note exactly the same obliterates any playing nuance there might have been, but possibly there wasn't much to begin with. That's fairly typical of metal, but rock solos (think Garcia, Harrison, Clapton, Knopfler, etc.), so much of the guitar solos are right hand technique varying the attack and the force. Seems to me that this mixing approach would lose all of it.

    • @hardcoremusicstudio

      This comment is kind of funny to me because in terms of mixing heavy music, Jordan actually is very minimalistic in his approach, and that, in my opinion, is what makes his mixes SO good. He keeps everything sounding natural, though certainly enhanced. Most modern metal production seems to go immediately to making EVERYTHING sound SO huge and larger than life. So while it does sound good, in my opinion, it really lacks the "real"-ness that Jordan's mixes are able to produce so well.
