  • The 11th New York Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment of the Union Army in the early years of the American Civil War. The regiment was organized in New York City in May 1861 as a Zouave regiment. Their commander was by Colonel Elmer E. Ellsworth, a personal friend of Abraham Lincoln. One of the most unique things about this unit is its was Drawn from the ranks of the city's many volunteer fire companies. The Zouaves' first major combat experience occurred during the First Battle of Bull Run. The 11th would loose 177 men at Bull Run, with 35 men killed, 74 wounded, and another 68 missing and presumed captured.

I love how the reaction of the 11th to hearing there’s a fire in DC was “fire! We’re well kick it’s ass”

My mother's great-uncle was a Zouave in the 10th New York Volunteers. He was wounded at the 2nd battle of Manassas and died at the King Street Hospital in Alexandria. At the time the Union army occupied Alexandria.

I portrayed a soldier of the 11th NY at the Manassas battlefield park for their 150th Anniversary events (reenactment/encampments,etc.). I wore the 2nd issuance uniform of the red shirt, federal blue trousers and i had both a red fez and the trademark red kepi. Boy it was so hot that weekend. bags of ice were my best friend, lol. Was 115 in the shade on friday and saturday.

That’s really cool! Those uniforms don’t do you any favors in the heat that’s for sure. Can only imagine fighting a battle on top of it being that hot.

The Zouaves are at the origin of the Ottoman units in Algeria in North Africa after the French conquest of Algeria, France experimented with the system of light troops or (Voltigeur) or skirmisher

One of my ancestors was the farrier for the 11th. That also means he was in combat when he wasn’t shoeing horses. His last name was Burlingame. You hardly ever hear of the farriers in the Civil War, but they were some of the most important soldiers.

Oh gosh that’s so cool to know. Farriers were absolutely one of the most important jobs. Especially since most supplies were transported by horse/wagon. Thanks for sharing.

I believe my 2nd great grandfather was in this regiment. Is there a list of the names of the men somewhere that I can verify his service?

I’m sure there is. Have you tried the New York historical society?
