To cap off 2016, Chick has written a super-hip new arrangement of our National Anthem.
In case you missed its debut for capacity crowds at the New York Giants' MetLife Stadium (80,000+ fans) and the New York Knicks' Madison Square Garden (another 20,000+), watch the video below.
Chick somehow found time to create this very Corea-ified new take in the midst of an unprecedented run of sold-out shows in celebration of his 75th Birthday, held at the Blue Note Jazz Club, NY (Oct - Dec '16). Undeniably the greatest jazz birthday party ever.
In our wild political times, the Anthem has taken on some new meaning. But the fundamental freedom of expression that our country was founded on, which is embodied in the spirit of jazz, shines through brightly on Chick's new arrangement.

This is the song for when you beat "America: the RPG", and the credits roll.
it always amazes me how Chick Corea can peel off layers of harmonies and melodies we all heard xillion times, and find excitement and surprise the listener, without harming the original composition. grand artist, master of balance. RIP.
So true..
The Legendary maestro Chick Corea 🎹
Better than Fergie
Love you Chick. A constant and beautiful inspiration. ~♡
Whoa... Did he perform that exactly the same both times?! I wonder which footage is actually of the recorded audio... Very nice and different interpretation though - you don't often picture jazz legends like Chick performing renditions of this tune!
ChillPhilJazz Recorded Audio most likely from the montage if in fact my ears are right from hearing a layer
For sure it has to be the Montage.
We hear the electric sampled piano version with some mixed strings , not the acoustic one.
I doubt that Chick could play anything twice the same way if he tried.
And no, not even three blind mice!
yeah but where them snazzy altered scales at?
He snug somr in there if you listen carefully. But he was not there to be pretentious, but to serve.
This is the first time I heard him resort to a Flat6 - Flat7 - Tonal Center Cadence.😁
perfect for the scenarios he was in..Creative yet still mainstream..Perfect as far as I'm concerned
Dude I'm feeling Joy and sadness! I grew up listening to this genius work his magic and am grateful for the incredible legacy and volumes of music he has blessed the planet with for so long. God is blessing Mr. Corea as he entertains the angels up above. RIP Chick! I think I'll listen to some Weather Report now.
Fantastic. A giant in music ..
He never ceases to amaze me
The best thing to start the year with :)
Freaking beautiful. RIP, Chick.
best version I've heard
Totally, Chick.....
Happy Birthday my friend... :)
Such a beautiful arrangement !!!
1:48 Notice in the background that basketball players were walking around while Chick was playing the National Anthem. Obviously neither their parents, nor their teachers, nor their coaches, nor their team owners ever taught them proper respect and etiquette which means standing at attention for the National Anthem of the country which made them millionaires.
Main Reason I won't go to the games
I love this arrangement! Brilliant!
I'm so lucky to have known him
RIP Maestro
So beautiful
Not sure...Was it in 4/4 ? Original is in 3/4. Seems like he's added a beat...What a loss to the music world...Can't believe he's gone !!
Corea playing US anthem on a Japanese piano
Duh, Chick's been a Yamaha artist for decades.
Not that ironic when you consider the melody of the US anthem is a rip of a British drinking tune.
RIP
Bravissimo CHick....Leonardo di maro RUclips jazz PIANIST COMPOSER RUclips
Chick Korea must now play the Korean national anthem
Amazing!
Thanks so much for the Inspiration over the years . Your truly a blessing to Our World !!!
Fantastic. Chick's the man.😎
God bless America, my home sweet home.
Beautiful Chick. And I loved seeing Tommy in there too :)
The man!!
No one will say it because it's Chic Corea, but that was not his best performance 😕

🌹🎹🐥🎹🌹
Pretty cool!
Chick is trying very hard not to use altered chords :p
Só grega!!
Genial!!!
lol i bet half the crowd didnt understand it. great work as usual from chick
Didn't understand the national anthem?
Peter Henderson seems like you dont understand comments
I did, it just seems really condescending to think that the entire audience couldn't "understand" a rendition of the national anthem.
because most of them are just common simpletons who would never understand chicks music
Lmao get your head out of your own ass
Great arrangement! So deep, emotional
Was this from a specific concert? All the photo's are of different events?
What chord was that last run based off of? Kinda diminished sounding
5 years later, if you still need the information, it's a run with the notes 1, #4 and 5, so its basically a lydian chord. You could add in the 3rd without harming the sound, so it's just a major chord with #4 added to it 🌞🌞🌞
Chick, I've listened to you for over 35 years, and for the first time I find that you're not picking the songs well.
Franklin Eduardo Arriagada Fernandez What's wrong with Corea playing the national anthem?
flailflailflail he has fernandez in his name
Meh this is a pretty bland arrangement for him. Wish he didn't play it so safe, could have been way more interesting.
You are correct, but the audience would not have "Gotten it" and he would have had a big controversy over it, right. He didn't want to do that, come on. He was thinking ahead.
It would be Fergie all over again if he took any risks
Did you hear about what happened to Stravinsky after his arrangement? Believe me, it's better for musicians not reharmonize the song too much. The public just wouldn't like it. This also happened with the 2012 Olympics arrangement. The apex of the song was lowered a bit and people called the arranger a traitor and a disgrace to this country because of that lowered note.
William Edmundson I mean Stravinsky was Russian and did it during a time we really didn’t like Russians. Not the same really
@@williamedmundson6626 the striking chord changes may be disturbing to the layman's ear
sound great , i had prefer he played the synthesizer,to fill more the spaces, piano is to dry
Chick plays liberace
