It should be noted that Admiral Rozhestvensky was vehemently opposed to this entire plan. In fact he proposed a plan in 1902 to strengthen the Far East fleet. And as far as training goes, this was pre-WWI, standardized training practices weren't really a thing in many militaries, and in addition they didn't consider the Japanese a real adversary, because they weren't European.

12:14 you're forgetting this is *pre*-soviet russia, and therefore a monarchist army. AKA really decentralized and training in them was usually the responsibility of the units commanding officer rather than a standardized thing like modern militaries, cause of course the nobles were chosen by god and know what's best for their men to learn. i mean look at pictures of the british in the american revolution and you'll see pretty much every regiment has a completely different uniform.
granted, by ww1 most militaries had ditched this but yknow, tzarist russia.

I wanted to try to say what you wrote wrong, but after thinking about it, everything you just wrote is wrong. "Ordained" by god was a thing that was used to justify the rule of kings etc. Not military commander. That's one point I wanted to correct you on, but after thinking, there is nothing to correct. It is just entirely wrong. In the ancient and medieval era, the right to rule was gained by strength. Monetary strength, strength of intellect, of your arms etc. That is why nobles were ones who led armies, why they were knights. Because their whole life was about training their body and their martial arts, so they would be able to defend their subjects. Later, when the "nations" were more or less formed and stable and muskets were widespread, there was not that much of a need for knights etc. and rulers had to justify their right to rule somehow, to ensure the stability of their nations (that is for example, why when French king dies, all the butlers in the palace loudly shout "King is dead, long live the king!" Because the interregnum, when there was no king, ment a time of chaos and instability. That was why they tried everything they could, to shorten the interregnum as much as they could.) So they were ordained "by God", through its priests. And also about the uniform standardization. I'm not sure how it matters in the topic of "monarchist army" and I don't know what pictures you've seen, but British army uniforms were red coloured by the end of 17th Century. But even the US army regiments wore very different uniforms. Just look at some regiments from US civil war almost 100 years after the war of independence. They don't just wore totally different colours, they wore even totally different uniform cuts etc.
I am holding my head while I read the utter nonsense you wrote. "Training was responsibility of the units commanding officer, rather than a standardized thing". Please, read a bit about military history, at least or Wikipedia, or somewhere.

Zinovy Rozhestvensky wasn't that bad a naval leader, particularly if you look at his previous postings and the accomplishments he had. For the Imperial Russian navy at the time, he was one of the competent ones who would discipline his crews. The main problem was the 2nd Pacific Squadron was built in haste and held together with duct tape. He did not have enough time to whip things into order. His previous postings were rather uneventful, he was recommended to the job due to his outstanding discipline he could instill in his crews and the lack of any monkey-business corrupt naval officers would get up to.
He kinda got the short end of the stick in this video due to the need for pacing and brevity. Most of the egregious actions of the fleet during the voyage like friendly fire, Rozhestvensky was actively trying to stop from the beginning. There just wasn't enough time for him to get things under control before undertaking a voyage to the other side of the planet. It's why he was so angry all the time, yelling + throwing binoculars at boats in the distance who did not respond to his signals. I think after the first leg of the journey, he's just get the offending battleships to pull over next to his flagship, just so he can yell at the officers in charge. He'd given up admonishing people in private, and just went ham probably realizing that they were are sailing to their doom if they didn't take things seriously.
About the lack of training, it really shouldn't be up to a vice admiral to run gunnery practice. Granted he is responsible for the person under him who probably IS responsible for the gunnery, but by and large, crews of military vessels should have ample training already. At the very least, they should have some skill with naval gunnery to hit unmoving civilian targets, not to run into friendly ships, and have some training in naval vessel reconnaissance and recognition. It's just that the squadron was cobbled together on the fly, and Russian discipline being what it is in the early 20th century, some of those ships had immense disciplinary problems amongst the officer staff.
Fun note: He survived the battle of Tsushima (albeit heavily wounded), and during the court martial in Russia afterwards, tried to take all responsibility for the failures of the voyage and subsequent battle to spare the rest of the survivors from punishment (which worked).

    • @Isolder74

On top of everything he wasn't even given a full load of ammunition for his fleets and not issued the extra ammunition he would have needed to do any actual gunnery training until he was almost to Japan.
Firing off most of their ammunition at ghost torpedo boats and fishermen did not help with that.

  • @mobiuscoreindustries
    @mobiuscoreindustries 2 года назад +172

In reality the admiral was probably the only competent member of the entire expedition. His ship was the only one that was well behaved (comparatively) and well drilled.
But literally everything around him was the definition of incompetence put onto sea. From Russian peasants that often had never seen water up to this point, corrupt and lacking admirals that he could not smack down due to their connections to the Russian court, Inadequate ships at the best of time, some being nothing more than aristocratic pleasure vessels with guns bolted on them. He even had to go into radio silence to try and shake up his "re-enforcement" of truly geriatric vessels that were barely sea-worthy.
That last part may have actually doomed the expedition because the wave of new vessels were slower and delayed the fleet by several months. If they weren't slowed down they could have actually caught the Japanese fleet mostly in port and spread out where they could have achieved their objective or at least be capable of diverting to friendly ports.
With the Japanese navy at sea and fully aware of their presence there was nothing they could do but fight an absolutely one sided battle.
On the flipside this battle is likely the reason why Japan became so confident about their naval capabilities and likely caused them to vastly overstretch their abilities, leading ultimately to their defeat in the next world war.

    • @patbracken
      @patbracken 2 года назад +12

Japan was already overstretching their abilities in this war. They were upset with the Treaty of Portsmouth because they thought they should get more after their string of victories, completely disregarding that they had exhausted their reserves and supplies. Meanwhile, Russia had more men just sitting in Poland preventing rebellions than had fought the Japanese.
So yes, this war made them dangerously overconfident.

Admiral Rozhestvensky wasnt really that bad of an admiral. However, given the situation there was litthe he could do. A lot of sailors were sent to far east squadron, and places in baltic sea fleet were filled with conscripts. For many russian sailors, that was first time they saw sea. Admiral was opposed to this plan, as he predicted supply issues and difficulty in linking up with far east squadron, however he was overruled and told to go ahead. A lot of officers ignored admiral's orders, and there was little he could do because they were aristocrats, something he already got in trouble before when he tried disciplining other officers. Finally, admiral was forced to his fleet a large amount of obosolete cruisers, which were pretty useless in modern combat and constituted unnecessary drain on supplies and forced fleet to lower speed as they could not keep up, but again admiral was overruled.
So, to conclude although this voyage was a disaster i would exonerate Admiral Rozhestvensky, as he was given flawed plan he was opposed to, and was prevented by superiors from doing anything to improve situation.

I have to be fair to the admiral.
    1. He is thrown into this mission with the majority not being trained navy sailors many of them only being at best fish fleet sailors and at worst regular peasants.
    2. The mission goes around the most circuitous route it possibly could.
    3. These men were supposed to be urgent backups in the war with Japan. If they had to get there as soon as possible, when was the Admiral supposed to find time to train them?
A bit of info missing from this account is the question of Did the other ships have to go through the admiral for permission to open fire on other ships? If not, then he was plagued by imbiciles captaining the other ships and it is no wonder he is described as having anger issues. The only incident we have a time on is 20 minutes against the British fishermen. If these Captains and their men were this idiotic, then I can see it taking 20 minutes for him to get them to stop.

Two awesome things about Theodore Roosevelt
1- he once was boating out west on a river and some guys stole his boat. So he got an axe, cut down some trees, built a new boat, and chased the theives down without hardly any sleep to drag them off to be arrested.
2- he did try to run for a third term after Tafts first term- he had previously stepped down due to a promise he made not to continue his presidency since he had served the majority of two terms after president McKinley was assassinated. During a campaign speech he was talking about his new party when he was shot- and then proceeded to take an hour to finish the speech before going to the hospital.
Unfortunately he and Taft split the republican base vote letting Woodrow Wilson of all people become president.

You’re correct! They didn’t do that! THEY DID EVEN WORSE THAN THAT!😂🤣😂🤣 Oh this is going to be a TREAT!
Also, I’m glad you guys are learning about this fleet, because I would have recommended the “Voyage of the Damned” video by Drachnifel…but it is very lacking in visuals and his explanation is more thorough, with VERY dry, British sarcasm. Wouldn’t make for a good “reaction”. I’ve never seen this video myself, so it’s a first time all around, lol.
EDIT 1: No no NO, Don't diss Rozhestvensky! That man was the best they had for the task at hand! He was prone to getting pissed off, but his sailors RESPECTED him for that, because he was disciplined, and they KNEW the only reason he didn't beat the absolute dog-snot out of his corrupt, inbred, snobby, blue-blooded noble "Peers" is because he'd get shit-canned in a nano-second by the Russian court! He was the only competent person in this entire shitshow! (and on that note, F--K the Kamchatka!)
EDIT 2 at about 9 minutes: Yeah, that was pretty much the attitude of Rozhestvensky, my dude. He wasn't herding CATS, he was trying to control coked up, vodka soaked howler-monkeys, which HAD to have included revolutionaries and saboteurs who were trying to make things worse in the fleet. (Just because the communists overthrew the Czar later, doesn't mean there weren't revolutionaries working towards those goals before then, you know?
EDIT 2 at 10 minutes: 😑The Vice-Admiral didn't give the crew *permission* to go grab animals while they were in Madagascar. He was bedridden sick, and his second-in-command had a STROKE from the stress and was half-paralyzed. The idiotic crew of the fleet took advantage of that to grab animals, drugs, and every STD known to mankind while they had the chance...
EDIT 3 at 11:34 Finally the Kamchatka is brought up. That "repair ship" was THE very epitome of dead weight throughout the entire journey. *IT* was pretty much solely responsible for every single "DO YOU SEE THE JAPANESE!?!!?" panic that happened throughout the entire journey, from beginning to end, with the crew constantly lying about stupid crap. It disappeared for 3 days at one point and came back claiming it fought off an ambush of 3 Japanese destroyers by itself. Rather than got lost and shot at a bunch of fishing boats AGAIN. (which were all unharmed because the Kamchatka's aim was so freaking bad).
I'm sorry for the ranting. College Graduate with a BA in history and sometimes when historical tales get simplified in a way that blame is spread where NONE was deserved (the admiral) it gets me fired up.😅
End of the Video: Final notes just to clear things up and point out that Vice-Admiral Rozhestvensky was the ONLY non-clown in this entire circus. And that includes the captains of the other ships in his fleet, and the nobility “supporting them” back home.
The Baltic fleet, AKA Second Pacific Squadron wasn’t just bad sailors. There were 2-3 ships that were NOT “old” in that fleet. All the rest were old, or ancient, or out classed, or Russian Nobleman’s yachts that had been donated, with some guns tacked on. (donated because those nobles probably had bigger and more modern luxury yachts by that point)
The reason for no training for the crew; the fleet was supposed to be in a hurry, and thus needed a light load. So Russian command DIDN’T SEND ENOUGH AMMO TO TRAIN WITH. The fleet had “enough bullets for ONE major engagement” and that was IT. So it was Rozhestvensky taking a risk to TRY and make his fleet of screw-ups not embarrass themselves when the real fighting started by getting some training in.
Also, Kira, you’re kind of right about people trying to get rid of Rozhestvensky. Because he was one of the ONLY people in upper-command who wasn’t a corrupt, incompetent screw-up. It was dirty cops getting rid of the only squeaky clean policeman in the entire precinct. On that same note, since there were plenty of a-holes commanding the other ships, Rozhestvensky took an opportunity at one point to get rid of the worst and send their asses home. One of those guys responded by going, “Oh yeah? Well how about I send you a “””helpful””” 3rd fleet of ships so old and useless that we didn’t even consider them to be sent with YOUR fleet?😈” Rozhestvensky didn’t want to drag the warboat equivalent of an Alzheimer’s ward with him, so he wasn’t even sending messages of his position back to Russian high command. Unfortunately, that 3rd “fleet” caught up to them in Madagascar, which is why he probably called for that last chance training exercise.
Something which stuck out to me is that Rozhestvensky was one of the prisoners captured by the Japanese. (took shrapnel to the leg while running around his ship, helping load and fire the cannons while his ship was being shot to hell) and the Japanese leader gave him props because the Japanese KNEW how badly the Russian fleet was behaving, and he gave kudos to Rozhestvensky for trying to fulfill his duty despite that.
I found the quote, from Admiral Tōgō to Rozhestvensky: "Defeat is a common fate of a soldier. There is nothing to be ashamed of in it. The great point is whether we have performed our duty."

Part of me wonders if the crews of this fleet were doing all of this because they knew they would be doomed when they reached the Japanese, and instead were hoping to cause enough trouble that the Tsar would learn about all of it and say "forget it, it's too much trouble" and order them back to the Baltic before they got themselves blown up.

I’ve read that Russians and Japanese used different explosive compounds for their ammo. The one used by Russians was more stable in use but very difficult to store, so by the time they arrived to Japan, a huge chunk of their ammo were duds from the moisture. Meanwhile, the compound used by Japanese was easy to store but wasn’t very reliable in combat, and there were reports of their ammo exploding in barrels during the battle.
This was before TNT came around which was both easy to store and was stable in use

The admiral was actually the second most competent man in the Navy. The MOST competent had been killed in battle weeks before they left.
    As for the training issue:
    1) the sailors were conscripts from the interior, where the only body of water they had seen before that was maybe a river.
    2) as they said at the very beginning, the Baltic freezes most of the year, so they never HAD the chance to train for most of the year.

there are only two things the video didn't bring up which was the Admiral coming up with names for ships that really annoyed him (and I am not gonna post them as they were extremely foul names XD ) to which when he got extremly enraged he would go to the outer most parts of the bridge and shout insults at the offending ship across the 5 mile distance. The other thing was one of the officers brought the crew of his cruiser a crate of cigarettes from Madagascar only for them to find out they were laced heavily with opium and they had to fight the crew to get rid of the offending cigarettes

One thing to note. THe idea of a Japanese fleet in the north sea or atlantic wasnt THAT far fetched. Japan did not have the industrial capacity at the time to mass produce warships, so like many navies, the Japanese bought their ships from England (who was happy to sell older designs to far off countries to fund their brand new ships). So there really could have been Japanese flagged ships in that part of the world. The hysteria, comes from the idea that England would have allowed Japan to sail an entire crew and full load of ammunition over to load the ships coming out of the shipyards and just start harassing european powers.

I should point out that, while all the yukks are real, this story isn't just a comedy but a tragicomedy. The 2nd Pacific Squadron, which was, in fact, the worst fleet on the high seas, was doomed to meet one of the best. "Curb-stomping" hardly begins to describe what jappened to our poor Russkies.

It gets dumber with the details no in this video. Few military muck ups can compare to the First Crusade (Extra Credits did a delightful series on it, one of their earliest), but the Second Pacific Squadron of the Russo-Japanese war comes closer than most.
Though the Admiral was probably one of the strongest links left the Russian Navy that wasn't already at Port Arthur or tied up in the Black Sea. Yes he had rage issues, but he was fair, known for well drilled and disciplined crews, and he had very low tolerance for corruption. That he didn't just lash out more at the trash he had to work with is honestly impressive. He did have some new anger management quirks by the end of the voyage though. The video honestly does his efforts to reign in this sailing shit show a disservice. He tried to call off the sense shooting on the many occasions it happened.
Also, the Kamchatka alone accounts for like... 10% of the annecdotes about this debacle.
Trust me, it all gets crazier and more depressing.
