Comparing Galactic Empires: Dune, Hyperion, Foundation

  • In literary science fiction, depictions of galactic empires are common. The trend was kicked off in the 1940s by legendary science fiction writer Isaac Asimov, in his Foundation series. The foundation series focused on the fall of an old galactic empire and the rise of a new one. The foundation books paved the way for other authors to create new fictionalized empires among the stars. In this video, I will be comparing the Galactic Empires, of the Foundation universe, The Dune Universe, from Frank Herbert's series, and the Hyperion Universe, from the science fiction series by Dan Simmons which was published from 1989 to 1997.

As a child, discovering sci-fi early (5th grade) in 1957, sci-fi took my mind to places I could not have dreamed possible. My mind expanded with each new story. When I read Dune every fragment of my existence was already traveling the stars. Dune drove me even further to a point where Earth was a distant memory. These feelings helped me see the continuity of the past and the possibilities of the future for mankind. As I got older I was saddened by the realities of life and the lack of vision I saw everywhere. Seeing mankind squander its potential renders my heart but I grasp hope today as I see men breaking the bonds of greed and envisioning a place for man in the stars. We need to reignite man's pioneering spirit and willingly embrace the future hardships this will expose us to so we can continue our journey. Thank you for the time you spend and your creativity on RUclips.

Hyperion was a trip. I still get the mental image of a husband and wife sitting in different rooms who look over at each other as their portals disconnect and they never see each other again. And falling through an unending sky for days. It was a fascinating series.
Dune was great, but I kinda hit a point where it started feeling like "Paul is the chosen one! No wait, Leto is the chosen one! No wait, Siona is the chosen one!" I love the Dune miniseries though.
And Asimov is just fantastic. His robot books are beautifully written and ask the reader what it truly means to be human by seeing humanity reflected in robots. Bailey and Daneel were wonderful partners and friends. But the universe building that Asimov does is incredible. He starts basically in a 1950's style earth and expands that out into a galactic empire which crumbles under its own weight and just stagnant bureaucracy. (remind you of anything?)

Dan Simmons on every level from the character arcs to how his universe worked did such a great job of establishing the "rules" and then shattering the rules without cheating. Brawne befriending Martin stands out. FORCE losing to the surprise "Ouster" overwhelming invasion but one small task force bravely sacrifices and discovers the real enemy and saving untold BILLIONS from slavery. And don't even get me started on Endymion and how horrifying Nemes was.

After reading Hyperion in 1990 I began to devour Dan Simmom"s other novels and short story anthologies. Since then he remains my favorite author. My favorite novel of his is 'Carrion Comfort.' It's the only novel of his that I've read twice. The idea that certain people are 'mind vampires' that can easily slip into people's consciousness, take over their bodies and use them as puppets to perpetrate vile and reprehensible deeds and then vacate them so that they take the blame or leave them as empty, mindless shells is truly horrifying.

    • @massivereader
      @massivereader 4 года назад +5

@@littlemrpinkness295 Yeah, there were several other galactic empires that preceded or were contemporary with Asimov's Foundation. That's why everyone easily understood the fall of the Empire predicted by psychohistory, along with it drawing from the historic Roman Empire. Poul Anderson's PolesoTechnic League probably better know now as the Technic Civilization tracked trading empires roughly based on the mercantile empires of old Europe as they expand, destabilize, then form an empire, face external threats and then decay due to a decline into decadence. This contains the excellent Dominic Flandry novels that trace the career of a singularly effective intelligence officer. Highly recommended!
Although some dismiss the Flandry novels as being imitative of James Bond, his character actually preceded the publication of the first of those books by Ian Fleming.

I can recommend the Lensman series by E. E. Smith. Older than Foundation, and a lot of giddy fun.

Hamilton comes up with new universes from time to time but several books of his are set in this Commonwealth universe (Pandora's Star, Judas Unchained, and the Void trilogy). Based on what you like, the series would be right up your alley. For me they are on the level of Hyperion and Dune (especially the 3 Void novels).

I really enjoyed Peter F. Hamilton's "Night's Dawn" trilogy, and I recommend it to anyone who likes the galactic epics in this vid.
It is only set 600 years in our future, but hundreds of star systems are settled under 'the Confederation'.
It has an interesting mix with the horror genre, but I especially liked its complex and realistic world building, where our species is beginning to diverge somewhat due to 'bitek' being utilised comprehensively by a portion of humanity but not by the majority.
I hope that this channel covers this series one day.

I've read a lot of harder core Sci-fi (...Greg Bear, Larry Niven... etc..) but I loved the Hyperion series. My one criticism is that the first "vignette" (it's structured like the The Canterbury Tales) should not have been - The Priest's Tale - . It's a bit of a tough read. It's revelations would have been better suited later in the narative. However, The - Soldier's Tale -... - The Poet's Tale - …. - The Detective's Tale - are awesome. Oddly, my favorite is The Consul's Tale: "Remembering Siri". That one kicked me in the emotional guts a bit.

I like 40k, but the empires in this video are driven by the original source material (the books) and they fit a certain style of story telling. 40k doesn’t fit that style due to the constant new material by different authors. IMO, Dune is to sci-fi what LotR is to fantasy. Comparing 40k to Frank Herbert is like comparing Dungeons & Dragons to Tolkien. They share themes but have completely different execution.

All that matters is how much one personally enjoys the lore and usually that will dictate how much time one is willing to spend on it.
