I’ve been listening to Muse since high school 1999. I live in Indonesia. Finally got my chance and $$ to see them last July in Malaysia. For us down here, this is total luxury. We don’t get to see them even every 10 years! I waited sooo long!!!! So, I know the setlist is predictable, but it’s perfect for first experience. Hopefully can save more $$ to see them again somewhere someday. Thanks for this good insight.
Can't even comment cuz Muse doesn't really come to my country lol. My first reaction to any live rock band coming here is "holy shit they're coming?! Is this actually a dream?!", cuz we don't get them all that often. I think last time they came was ~10 years ago? I'm just glad Muse is still producing new music and doing live shows.
Yes my answer is long but ... hope you'll find it interesting and that you'll get my point. It's true that when you look at a specific moment and compare setlists every 2 days on the same tour, it may seem like it's not changing, but I'd like to make people realise that every tour has its share of surprises. During the WOTP tour (festivals included), they played Map of the Problematique, Resistance, New Born, Bliss, Citizen Erased, Pressure. Let's not forget The Gallery during the festivals too. And we can add songs like Space Demenation, Assassin and even Minimum with their appollo and cavern gigs. On the ST tour, there was the return of Take a Bow or Unsustainable, which had disappeared for a while before that tour and will probably disappear for a good while again. They also played songs like Showbiz, B&R, Bliss during their pre-ST festivals or gigs in south america. During the Drones tour, they played Butterflies & Hurricanes, Apocalypse Please, Sunburn, Blackout, Citizen Erased, Take a Bow, United States of Eurasia, Feeling Good, Blackout, Revolt, Defector and many more ... I think the Drones tour might be the tour with the most rotation in their setlists (just compare the 6 setlists at the Accor Arena in Paris, no setlist the same and rotation for each date). On The 2nd Law tour, there were also Butterflies & Hurricanes, Sunburn, Feeling Good, Stockholm Syndrome, and New Born with the roulette, Unintended, Guiding Light, Blackout, a bit of Dead Star, Map of the Problematique, and even Falling Down and Host. During The Resistance tour, there were appearances of Cave, Unintended or Ruled by Secrecy like you mentioned... Well, all this to say that yes, they often play their classics, and you sum up why perfectly. If they make a Stadium tour they must fill the stadium and they will not do it with the setlist you shown us at 17:40. But every tour has its surprises, and on every tour they bring back old songs (Resistance came out 14 years ago ...Black Hole came out 17 years ago .... Absolution came out 20 years ago, songs from these albums can be considered as old). They played Minimum and The Gallery in 2022, do you realize how crazy that is considering these songs came out around the 2001 area. Personally, I've been lucky to see them 9 times, once per tour since 2009 (and twice during the ST and WOTP tours), and I had the chance to see many of the songs I just mentioned (for instance Cave in 2009, Falling down and host in 2012, Unintended, Sunburn, Blackout in 2013, Apocalypse in 2015, and I had to wait 2019 to see Take a Bow or 2022 to see Map of The problematique because thank god yes they do bring back some old songs every time in their tour). Of course, if you go see them 9 times during the same tour in 2 months, yes, it's more challenging to have different setlists with surprises. Regarding the deep cuts they are best for small gigs like La Cigale (had the chance to be there) or Shepherds Bush. Just look at the reaction of The Groove when they played at Les Vieilles Charrues Festival in 2015 in France, the crowd reaction is just not there, because out of the 50 000 people in the crowd, there might be 1 000 true fans that know that song. Look at The Groove at their Webster Hall gig in 2015 when people knew what they were getting for, or at Montreux in 2016, the admosphere looks crazy ! And for the small deep cut tour well they done one before the Drones tour in england with crazy setlist and with fan knowing beforehand that the setlists will be crazy. So I believe they will do more small tour like that and since drones they got used to do small intimist shows before their big tour like the appollo and small theater show before the WOTP tour. So as you sum up perfectly, for the stadium yes we will have ordinary setlist and if you want some crazy ones put all your effort and money to go see them in small venues.
Very underrated comment. I think their setlist is great and every gig I've been at songs like supermassive blackhole have gotten a great crowd reaction. When I went to see them in 2012 people actually were sitting on the ground during sunburn. These popular songs are great and sure I would love to see butterflies live I also know that it's hard to fit it in the setlist. Maybe if muse did a tour without promoting a new album they could go more crazy with the setlists. Personal note, it made me sad that they took out the gallery from the wotp setlist.
A big deep-cut theater tour is probably just not gonna happen unfortunately. The fan favorites are more exhausting to perform, and they’re getting older. That’s just how it is. It’s honestly a miracle they pulled off SBE 2017, but I don’t think we’ll ever see anything that perfect again
Nice video. I’ll just say this. Perfect setlists don’t exist and will never happen. If you like their latest album, you’ll have a really good time. Also, everybody would be happy if they didn’t know about what they played yesterday/last week/month. So just do this. Go to the gig with no expectations. I agree though that could probably make a theatre tour. But you can only play so much. They have their lives too.
I saw them in Houston and I was surprised when they started playing Undisclosed Desire. When I got back home, I realized it was the first time they played it in the US in 6 years
A set from just the first 3 albums would be ideal for me. (minus Time is Running Out) I remember a noticeable shift in the shows from Black Holes on. They became more interested in engaging the crowd with anthems than tearing the roof off venues with riffs. You can't blame them I suppose. From that point on, a significant portion of the crowd were only there for the hits.
I agree. I love the stadium shows because I love the light shows and fire ( WOTP tour was the best show I’ve ever seen) but I do wish they played songs like showbiz and fury more often. A deep cut tour would be amazing
After seeing Metallica live, and hearing about their tour, I think Muse needs to do this exactly. Metallica played at every location for 2 nights, but also kept their gigs mostly to just the weekends without gigs in the middle of the week to make up for that time and energy on the 2nd nights. Their hits like Nothing Else Matters, Seek & Destroy, Master of Puppets, One, Enter Sandman, Fade to Black were all split between nights 1 and 2. Every night 1 had Orion, and every night 2 had Call of Ktulu. Muse needs to do this too. Their Orions and Ktulus have to be Citizen and Butterflies. I can see songs like Assassin and Reapers being swapped. Psycho and Supremacy would be my stage opening picks for nights 1 and 2. United States of Eurasia and Explorers would be a good piano swap. Starlight one night, Supermassive Black Hole the other night. Hysteria one night, Time is Running Out the other Futurism, Fury Uprising, Madness We are Fucking Fucked, Animals Muscle Museum, Showbiz this can keep going on but I'm just gonna conclude with Knights and Stockholm Syndrome as the 2 closing tracks. I would spend whatever it takes to go to my nearest gig for that kind of tour both nights.
They’re trying to cater to their entire audience and playing the favorites does that. WOTP in the US was my first muse concert and as much as I would’ve loved to hear some deep cuts, I would’ve felt disappointed if I paid so much money to not hear any of the their big songs. I think it’s completely idiotic to suggest they should cater their world tours for specific people from certain countries, especially when they had more intimate shows full of deep cuts prior to this tour, in one of which they played glorious, which to my knowledge, had never been played live. That being said, I would love for a deep cut tour with enough seats so that it doesn’t sell out within an hour of opening.
Great video, thanks ! A good idea they had was on the Resistance stadium/festival tour, when they asked the audience to pick the 5 songs they wanted to hear the most. However, they didn't play the 5 songs at each show and sometimes they even played none of them. Maybe if they closed the voting a lot earlier and restricted more the songs to pick (there were already some songs missing), it would have let them enough time to rehearse every picked song on the tour. (There was also a problem with hacking for some shows if remember well)
The last 4 times I've seen them I've missed bliss, which is the song that got me into muse and my favourite live. Breaks my heart every time... But I've got over it to a degree, these days I am just determined to enjoy them live whilst we've still got them!
Always loved them live, having seen them a bunch of times over the last 17 years - I think they’ve done very well to balance the need to play the hits, the classics, the new ones and trying to keep it interesting for regulars. Also pretty chuffed to say I was there for at least 5 of the gigs you’ve used footage of 🥳
A deep cut theatre tour would be a good idea in between there world tours. There fan base is definitely big enough now to do it. I just hope the US gets a couple shows because I know it has a less enthusiastic fan base than say France or Italy. But I can only hope that it happens. I know some of there older songs are tough for Matt to sing like Microcuts or Rules by Secrecy but he still remarkably can hit those high notes most of the time. Would love to see Space Dementia, Dead Star and Easily live. Let’s go!!! Great video Harry 🤙
Loved the video! I've been a Muse fan since The Resistance, seen them live 10 times so far (3 times on the WOTP tour alone). Every gig I go to is unique. Also, I have a disability which means I can only book accessible tickets. That tiny detail makes intimate shows practically unavailable for me. I try to but tickets for those, of course I do, but if I fail, I enjoy the ''bigger'' shows in exactly the same way. Also, I can confirm that they DO PLAY requested songs if you campaign for those well in advance of the show. It happened in 2016 when they played both Assassin and Citizen Erased in Poland - that was the gig of my life by the way 😃 Thanks again for the video👍
You're definitely right on the predictability of the set lists, I try not to tell people what's coming next as it would get very annoying for them, but I would love to be surprised and not know what's coming next. Obviously with what they're trying to do with stadiums they're putting on a journeyed show. Your idea of campaigning for a deep cuts tour would be fantastic!
idkw i can't watch this video. but well, i assume something happened behind the scenes, hence it affect their setlist. wish i could ask them personally. no offense but Muse got to be one of those bands/solo artists with the most difficult fans to be pleased. some things are necessary to be complained about but Muse fans are just.... *sigh. couldn't remember the exact gig but it's in UK when they played more Absolution songs for its 20th anniv. i can't believe i read fans were still not pleased when they played Butterflies - Apocalypse again (and a deepcut from OOS i think). like, wow! all the same setlist before and when there's a change, still not pleased? i know fans only want they make or play all stuff from OOS/Absolution over and over again but really... be grateful for a second, please. you'll never know when it'll be Muse last day. When that day comes, that's when you realise the meaning of "you don't know what you got till it's gone" Take a look at Michael Jackson fans in 2009. He was killed after doing the final rehearsal for his sold out farewell tour This Is It. can you imagine buying ticket to see your fave after his absence on stage for more than a decade and then the news break you saying he is no more? you guys are lucky Muse are still breathing and performing.
Great video, mate. Just watched their concert at Kuala Lumpur. The setlists they choose is very mainstream-y I think and this was my first ever concert I've ever been to. Also one and a half hour concert feels too short for me.
I was there, too! And Muse is my first concert I went to, I’ve been a fan since primary school. I’m still sad we got the shortest setlist (20 songs), compared to their show in Milan (25 songs)
@@bittersemisweet yup, it was the best and loudest night I've ever had. I was hoping for the rare songs to be played such as citizen erased and Stockholm Syndrome. But they still don't let me down with the performance that we got.
How many fans go to multiple shows on one tour? I reckon almost none. So variety between set lists within a tour is really not important and only something for the very hardcore online community to rant about. I'd love to see more variety in set lists between tours, but you can not expect them to play more than ca. 2 or 3 "deeper" cuts on a 90 min set list, if you look at the crowds that generally come to a Muse show - and that's fine, I really enjoyed every show I've been to thus far.
I wanted to comment something similar, but I think you put it perfectly into words. As a hardcore fan who spends more time than I should on the internet, I have my moments where I get salty about what I didn't get. I only heard about their 2nd Law concert in Phoenix(I live there and it's the only time I've seen them in tours) a few days after it happened, it had an excellent setlist and 11 years later that album is still in my top 4 favorites by Muse. I've only seen them 3 times. All in Phoenix; Drones, Simulation Theory, and Will of the People. What do I think of what I got? Well Drones was FUCKING INCREDIBLE for my 2nd concert ever, and first Muse concert. The stage setup is still the most incredible stage setup I've seen in all my concerts(I've been a more active concert goer these recent 2 years. At least 15 concerts in 2022 and '23 combined) As my first Muse concert I was grateful for the guaranteed songs too, Time is Running Out, Plug in Baby, Hysteria, Man with A Harmonica+ Knights of Cydonia, Starlight(Althought I felt teased, my first time hearing Prelude, not knowing it was paired with Starlight I was screaming in excitement for Survival) The beginning was magnificent with the Drones acapella setting us up for their arrival. Simulation Theory had an excellent arrival too with Algorith(Alternate Reality) and Will of the People was a bit underwhelming in comparison, seeing a clip we've already seen from their music video and trailer. They just kind of show up. These other 2 tours didn't quite have the groundbreaking stage as Drones, but they're still more impressive than what I see most artists do with just lights and TV screens. Anyways I am grateful for the songs I've gotten through these tours whether or not they were typical for the tour setlist. DRONES; Psycho sounded much better after Drones compared to their live Drill Sergeant audios which I'm not a fan of(I'm okay with the album version), Reapers, Isolated System+ The Handler Revolt, Mercy(better in Drones than Simulation with Matt on the guitar) THE GLOBALIST, not my favorite longer Muse song, but at the concert the visuals and everything was so perfect, it was the peak of the concert, I felt like they had that in mind when they wrote it. Apocalypse Please SIMULATION THEORY; both Algorithms, just like Globalist this feels like it was meant to be the highlight of the concert. Pray + The Dark Side Pressure Propaganda, at the very least the slide solo was a cool thing to see live Break it To Me, Matt proves he can do that vocal scale at the end of the chorus without depending on the auto tune affect, heard in the studio version. Houston Jam, I'll take what I can get with the tad bits of Futurism, Unnatural Selection and Micro Cuts. Same with the Metal Medley. Half of Stockholm Syndrome, half of New Born, the Assassin intro. Take A Bow WILL OF THE PEOPLE; Didn't care for this album much except Kill or Be Killed, Ghosts, Euphoria, Liberation, and Verona. So I got 2 of my preferred songs. But I did enjoy everything else in concert more than I would care to listen to these songs on my own time. Will of the People brought some fun dancy energy to Matt. I was surprised how much I enjoyed Compliance and Halloween in concert. Bliss, my first time getting Bliss at a concert so I'm grateful Resistance, probably a predictable song from a Muse concert but I didn't get it my other 2 shows. I actually enjoyed Behold the Glove, I hope Muse continues doing synthwave experimentation in their future. The Dark Side(Alternate Reality Instrumental) when it didn't happen during Simulation Theory tour, I didn't think they'd ever play the other version of Dark Side. Also Matt specifically showed a lot more energy than the previous 2 Phoenix shows, jumping for Kill or Be Killed Bliss and Hysteria. Doing the catwalk run in Plug in Baby. I list it all just to emphasize more, from the point of view of someone who has only seen them once in their 3 most recent tours, I still see a lot to be grateful for in seeing Muse live, in spending that money and going out to their concerts. I sometimes am guilty of complaining online about how I didn't get Butterflies & Hurricanes or Space Dementia but other people did, however, I try to see that more optimistically in a bigger picture. I should be grateful that Muse is still playing songs like Citizen Erased and there is still some realistic possibility of me getting those songs live in a future concert, especially if I commit to a deep cut theater travel. But if I never get these songs live, I have A LOT to be grateful for in terms of my live concert experiences with one of my favorite bands.
They'll never drop Madness. It's their biggest US hit next to Uprising. Personally I wish they brought the piano back... sometimes I feel like Matt has forgotten how to play it. Also, some Showbiz representation would be nice. Muscle Museum maybe?
Saw them for the very first time several days ago in Kuala Lumpur, I’ve been a fan since primary school, and Muscle Museum was my first Muse song. I think we got the shortest setlist (only 20 songs), compared to their previous show in Milan (25 songs). I’m still sad about it but they were perfect
Lol it’s a win for me and loss for everyone else, Muse put all my favourites in one setlist, Thought Contagion Undisclosed Desires, Verona, even went as far as putting my faves Apocalpyse Please and Butterflies and Hurricanes , I couldn’t ask for anything more, but I would just want Showbiz in there it’s missing for sure, they need to make it a regular, we shouldn’t have to be causing technical difficulties to get it , also Isolated System and Behold the Glove is boring, I like Matt using the glove at the start of Uprising though, however I like Dark Side, it’s towards the end of the concert and feels like a sitting down with Matt , also a lot of time wasted too despite the Setlist having a lot of my favourites, could easily fit 2 /3 more songs, I understand they need breaks but remove the wasted space and add The Gallery and Minimum back we appreciate them too
Let me try to make this short, but I'm a writer, musician, and music lover. It's NOT just MUSE with this problem, it's other long career, popular and "iconic" artists like The Cure and Taylor Swift. I once played in a Cure tribute and even in 2000, the setlists was a BITCH! They have popular songs, b-sides, ballads, technical, and acoustic songs. We didn't play every night, but eventually our setlist and encores stretched out so much, we had 1 opener, and made shows all ages! It was wild, we had lineup changes, we had no roadies, label, and poor security. I played Simonette for 7 years, but the band kept on until 2019. I missed MUSE in April, but saw The Cure in May. They played different setlist cuz the Seattle show shocked me by playing their most controversial song "Killing an Arab." It wasn't at the Portland show. Last week, my daughter's classmate saw Taylor Swift in Seattle; which I failed getting tickets to. Again, she's long career, several albums, and popular. Her Seattle show actually "moved the earth!" Some seizmic actually actually changed during the 1st night which is crazy! I know she's playing 3 hours straight and even in the rain. She also does 2 surprise songs on different nights; so, she probably has a setlist problem too. But, it's 2023. People are lazier and might have fear and panic in the air (Security was really strict for the MUSE show I missed). They had mobile tickets (didn't happen on the Drones Tour in 2015), gotta empty your water bottle at the door, no big bags, and it's now a NO CASH VENUE! Talk about psycho! So yeah, everyone's gonna have an opinion and everyone is gonna judge you no matter what, so just love the music and support your favourite artist while they're still here. We've lost too many musicians that attending shows or being in your own band isn't as exciting as it once was; which is sad... No time to edit!
I love seeing Muse live. They can put on a great show. My wife's also a huge fan. We even named our second child Bellamy (who happens to be autistic - relevant later). I've seen Muse live a total of 10 times. That's spanned 9 different venues including stadia and arenas, festivals and even the Teignmouth homecoming. The only occasion I've felt let down by the setlist was Glasgow 2023. It was 5 songs shorter than any other venue on that UK leg. The staging and effects were also significantly cut down relative to other shows. It wasn't advertised as anything less, but it materially was. Some other factors contributed to my disappointment: - It had taken months of preparation to be able to leave Bellamy overnight with my parents. - The rain didn't help. Although I've got even more respect for Matt's playing ability after seeing him perform with a dripping wet guitar. What really annoyed me was the announcement of additional (arena) dates the minute that leg had finished. After the band had told us those would be the only UK dates. Another night away from my kids this year isn't an option.
I agree - I’ve also seen Muse a few times now and it’s a family event for us (kids are 23 and 19 - they’ve both also seen Muse separately, daughter in Rome and Leeds festival, and son a few weeks ago at Rock Werchter in Belgium). In fact Muse Drones tour in London 02 was my son’s very first gig when he was 12 :-) But…as much as I utterly love them, and Glasgow was a great show, I definitely felt short-changed for the first time ever. And no Verona, which I was gutted about. However son was a happy laddie when they played Showbiz instead of KOC due to an issue at Werchter 😬😭
I agree that support acts should stay! I get annoyed with some classic artists that skip support acts. Paul McCartney, Elton John, The Eagles, tend to not have support acts, which is annoying. That said, I think ONE support act is quite sufficient except maybe when the headliner themselves are a fairly new band with a shorter setlist. Or a festival. But for an established act like Muse at a regular concert, ONE support act is sufficient.
Love the video. So, I'm a fan coming from musical theater... and I couldn't understand someone getting mad that when they saw Wicked twice it was the same show. I only bring that up since MUSE has production value similar to a Broadway show. It's still MUSE, just not something you go see multiple times in a single tour. Also, to be able to see a show multiple times within a tour is quite a privileged place to start from. So, I'm always a little eye roll on people who get "upset" they got to see a concert twice. All that said, I agree with your conclusion and I was SURE you were going u say you also went to one of the French shows!
Muse setlists are not that rigid for a hugely popular band. Look at Collective Soul, an old favorite of mine, I don't think they've changed 90% of their setlist in 20 years. Muse will occasionally throw in a few good old bangers. Sure there are songs I'd love to hear them play more than once every 5 years (Small Print, Escape, Futurism, Darkshines, Cave guitar version). But what I'd REALLY love Muse to do is play songs they've never played live. Shine is one of my all time favorites of theirs, it was even on their list for voting on that fan gig many years back, but hardly anyone knew it existed let alone voted for it. Host is another, sure they played the first 60 seconds of it that *one time*. Falling Away With You is another deeply desired track. Even Coma would be sick to hear. I hate when people say "I'm so hardcore, I want the DEEP CUTS like.. like... like CITIZEN ERASED! Or BLISS!" Like bro they have played those songs thousands of times live. It pains me to hear nobody talk about the forgotten songs I listed, and there are so many more songs like them.
I do hope for more setlist variety on whatever tour is next, but I didn’t think this US tour was bad in terms of variety. Also got to see them at the wiltern last year and saw sooooo many deep cuts which I think they should do again
coming from someone who loves just about every muse song (get out of here follow me) all their concerts ive been to have been fantastic. i do wish it had more of their older songs however
Apologies for a lengthy comment. Some great points here. I've seen them 23 times since 2007 and have definitely felt the 'staticness' of the band's sets since the ST tour. For me, it comes down to a few factors: - The band typically play between 1hr 30 and 1hr 45 minutes (depending on the venue), which for a band of their size is simply not enough. Most of all, their sets aren't getting longer (the WotP actually has less songs than the previous tour) despite ticket prices increasing with each passing year. Some of the set time is taken up with instrumentals, which is fair given that Matt's voice is showing inevitable (and natural) vocal decline due to age. I'm sorry but a band of over 20 years should be playing two hours of 'full' songs as a minimum. Instrumentals IMO shouldn't count as songs on the setlist but if they increased the time they were playing actual songs, throwing in 10+ minutes worth of breaks wouldn't feel as frustrating. I feel they should play all their songs live a half step down (like Metallica do) and not just a select few to give Matt some extra help. - A theatre tour isn't a bad idea in theory but fans who want to hear older songs/fan favourites shouldn't have to struggle to get tickets for intimate shows when the band could easily throw in two or three songs a night at an arena/stadium show. They were playing Dead Star, Sunburn and B+H regularly on the T2L tour to packed out stadiums, it is defintely possible without sacrificing the big hits and latest album songs. I feel that, even in a stadium, if 5% of the audience have been there since the early days then an old song or two really isn't asking for much. - Song choices. The band have an abundance of incredible songs that were released as singles and they still don't play them: Butterflies and Hurricanes, Sing for Absolution, Invincible, Muscle Museum, Hyper Music, I could go on. The band can't complain about casual fans not knowing these songs when they stopped regularly playing them years ago. I still love the band to bits but I think the band need a complete re-think of how they approach their song choices in the live environment.
But they're getting older, u cannot expect shows to be over 2 hours that's a crazy thing to do considering how much effort they put into playing each song
Yh this tour, yes on paper it’s 25 songs which is reasonable, it becomes not when you see interlude , drill Seargent, dark side alt , isolated system , behold the glove is all part of that, can easily fit on 2 more in place with that , I get they need breaks but why not add the gallery and minimum instead or a rest piano song like sunburn or hoodoo , which takes like literally a quarter of their time of the current rests
The problem is that they already did a "deep cut theatre tour" in Fall 2022 and they didn't do it right, only a few deep cuts and the more the tour was going, the less deep cuts you got, just look at the NY setlist... A real shame. I know they didn't advertise it to be a deep cut tour but that's what fans wanted and were asking for.
@@birdsuit The Psycho Tour was designed to test new songs (Psycho, Reapers, Mercy, Dead Inside) but it was full of deep cuts and fan favorites. And they didn't promote the album. The only new song they played in the US during this tour was WAFF. Liberation came later with the EU leg. So this tour was not a deep cut tour, not a "test of new songs" tour as only 2 new songs were played, what was it then ?
@@TheBurningBandit yes there is a difference. psycho tour was before drones actually released, when more diehard fans would go so they could see the band. the fact that the album hadnt released meant less casual fans would actually go. I mean if you're clearly so bored of the band you only care about deep cuts now, these are the brain worms you get
@@birdsuit Ok, the tour is after the album actually released, the band say in interviews that they're gonna use this tour to try out new songs : why only play 2 new songs ? Your argument about casual and diehard fans doesn't make sense as this theatre tour was preceded by a festival tour, so casual fans already went to see the band before (if they wanted to). The theatre tour is necessarily meant for the diehard fans, the ones who could fight with jammed websites and resellers to get a ticket. And the band clearly knows what the diehard fans wanted when they announced this theatre tour. I'm not bored about the band at all, went to see them 4 times during the last 2 years (not in theatres btw). I just genuinely don't understand the purpose of this tour as it offered pretty much no added value compared to their standard shows. And according to the prices some had to pay to get their tickets, I find it quite problematic.
You are right setlists must be a nightmare because of the geniuse of the 9 albums, I am a Muse hard core fan since a long time now if I want to make a list of my favorites songs it is more than 50 and even this I must cut bangers, finally I separate slow tracks from rock or hard ones, this is the evidence that Muse are 3 geniuses and no other bands are like them they are above all and Matt Bellamy's creativity is awsome amazing and his voice is another chapter of his mastery plus the piano play., they are so different with the others
17:21 Overall, this set would sit damn beautifully with most all old school and dedicated fans. This would be one for the books for sure. Personally, Resistance doesn't belong there, and I'd bet I am not the only one that got pretty sick of Unnatural Selection when going through the Resistance era. I think United States of Eurasia would be brilliant in the slot of Resistance and is a much better song. Remove Unnatural Selection to keep both Citizen Erased and Butterflies in the set. I would not even consider replacing Glorious with Invincible even a single time. And I would just shift Showbiz from being the first song of an encore to being either the last song of the main set or the last song of the first encore so that it can get the full, extended Ashamed outro like they did back in 1999-2000. That would be primo placement for me.
muse should definitely see this watch this. I agree with many things, but, to people who haven't got the chance to be in many muse shows, and just want the "muse experience".... those setlists aren't that bad...
For the gig in ireland i managed to create a spotify playlist that was acruate 21/23 songs just because they threw in absolution anniversary songs (the crowd lost their mind for). I really shouldnt be able to do that for a band with their discography Compared to say pearl jam where every single set is different. We also only had the one support act, when doors are at 6pm and the gig is over by half 10/10:45 its fairly casual compared to other large bands. Fact that some of the biggest reacted songs havent been played live since 2016 is fairly indicative that even newer fans like the music they make outside of their major mainstream.
Thank you very much for this incredible video! I think it will be very difficult to do a literal deep cuts tour, my hopes are for teo or three by request shows in the next year, and yes a better setlist. I will be very happy if they would include songs like Muscle museum or showbiz again, in a rotation slot if they want, but almost you rend the show unique with all these rotations
This is such an interesting video !! Really well researched, muse have been my fav band for 6 years now, honestly idc if they only played their most popular songs live I’d still have a bop. I went tk their 2 London O2 shows in October for WOTP and they played a few from absolution & OOS, still waiting to hear citizen erased live tho rip
Have been to see them a few times and don’t really mind the repetition. They are so established, I would think a smaller theatre tour wouldn’t appeal as much to them. If they are travelling away from loved ones, they should maximise their return.
The 2nd law stadium tour still the best show I've seen out of 20 odd shows. Production spot on and set list was great included dead star, blackout, Unintended and good spread from all their albums. Also was very refreshing seeing knights of cydonia in the middle of the set
Great video, I'm a big Muse fan, been listening to them since 2006. Theres so much they could do with their setlists, songs they've never played before etc.
Awesome video, clearly put tons of work into it. A deep cut tour is an absolute bucket list thing for me. I basically want to see Bliss and Falling Away With You, that's not too much to ask, is it?
Dude, this has surprisingly been my favourite video of yours that I’ve watched. Didn’t even have your big muff involved 😂 In all seriousness though, very good observations. I also do the premeditated song guess at their shows haha. You could be on to something with the deep cut theatre tour, but yes it’ll need the will of the people on a big scale. Keep up the great work man and I love that you actually went to France 😂😂
I believe their shows lack any kind of surprise. They seem like robots at some point. I would prefer if they got rid of the heavily choreographed light shows they often offer and focused on delivering a better performance when it comes to the music. The setlists are almost identical in terms of structure, length, song choices, and audience interaction. Every move seems calculated, so the feeling of watching a live band is lost. There are no unique experiences. They have become as predictable as their latest albums. I don't understand their preference for continuously playing songs like Supermassive Black Hole, Uprising, Dig Down, etc., when their audience is truly tired of them. I can understand it in a festival setlist because the audience is diverse, and they need to try to entertain everyone, but the setlist remains the same, with the same length, structure, and song choices. It's really tiring from a fan's perspective. I also don't understand how they themselves don't get tired of repeating an act that leaves no one satisfied. Their concerts are expensive and really short for a rock act. Maybe it's because in my country, Argentina, local or international rock concerts usually last no less than 2 hours and have around 25 songs. I understand shorter acts at festivals, but in their own concerts, it seems unreasonable, considering they charge the same or even more money. After all, it's about music, not a light show. They have a great live sound that they don't know how to properly accompany with what really matters: their songs and the interaction with the audience through them. The audience asks for something that they don't seem willing to give, because for almost 20 years, they haven't offered unique, singular, different shows that make you feel like you're experiencing something special and wanting to see them again. I don't intend to compare, but there are much older bands that reinvent themselves and never repeat setlists like The Cure or Radiohead. I don't ask for a radical change (which possibly won't happen), but it's sad to see a band slowly fading away. A separate paragraph to detail how apathetic their music has become since The 2nd Law. I see the beginning of the change in Black Holes & Revelations, where they opted to use more pop-like structures and melodies, but they no longer take risks, and there are no more songs flirting with progressive elements. I see a band that is only interested in belonging to the mainstream, as it happened with Coldplay. Their lyrics are empty, not only because the themes repeat, but also because the content is always the same: "Us vs. Them" without pointing to anyone or anything specific. The metaphors are childish in many cases.
Unfortunately, it's not just Muse who play the same songs all the time. Rammstein's 2023 tour contains the same tracks throughout the tour, there are no changes
With their headliner tours I think they’d benefit from playing more fan favourites over the radio hits, but for example if they play a festival they would be better off with hits instead. With their tour shows, especially at the price, a lot more hardcore fans are there to see them so they know more of the deep cuts and fan favourites, I’m biased but songs like Citizen Erased should come back a lot more, maybe MuscleM, and of course… BLOCKADES GOD DAMN PLAY IT haha
Personally out of all the albums I'd really like to see them keep in at least a couple from Showbiz, it was raw, simple (by Muse standards) and wall-to-wall belters showcasing Matt's voice without requiring backing tracks and supporting live artists which is something modern-day Muse rely on far too heavily in my opinion. Whilst I love some of their stadium fillers they are after all a three pieces and it'd be nice to hear a few more tracks each gig that showcase how much talent they've got doing just that over increasinly Jean-Michelle Jarre levels of overdubs and theatrics. Not that I've got anything against JMJ but Muse are in a unique position to really mix it up between massive stadium numbers and more intimate performances in a way few bands are and they don't seem to capitalise on that nearly enough in my opinion.
Great video, I can see your strong efforts to get the best setlist out of great muse songs from the perspective of an old fan. My personal preference would be without ANY songs from the last two albums (ST is a big mistake), and any combination of old songs with Showbiz at the end. Showbiz is such a unique song even among the bizarre muse songs with its dark silent mood in the beginning.
I can't understand why Madness i hated this much. I went to the concert in Milan this july and Madness played live is just on another level compared to the studio version or to other songs played live, like Verona. I like Verona as a song, but played live it loses too much, while for example Time is running out becomes somehow much better live.

They have nine studio albums thus far so I would simply love to get two song per album per show plus whatever else they want to use as filler.
My perfect setlist 1 Exogenesis: Part 1 (Overture) 2 Bliss 3 Mk Ultra 4 Dead Inside 5 Darkshines 6 City of Delusion 7 Sunburn 8 Butterflies and Hurricanes 9 Thought Contagion 10 Supermassive Black Hole 11 Map of the Problematique 12 Psycho 13 The Handler 14 Easily 15 Dead Star 16 Showbiz 17 Assassin 18 Unintended 19 Stockholm Syndrome 20 Citizen Erased 21 Uprising 22 The Small Print 23 Animals 24 New Born 25 Knights of Cydonia
For me it's not even the setlist but their overall sound that sucks, especially the drums sound, I hate it since about 2013, the snare is too bassy and his cymbals have little to no sustain which make any heavy song sound not heavy at all (take the Mayan show for instance, compare Assassin at LA 2008 and Assassin in 2015, it's night and day).
Pearl Jam manage to play stuff from their entire career/discography in every show, and every show has a unique setlist. Matt could do the same if he wanted ro.
Muse really down when begin use shits and noise influences like Slipknot or metal shits like that. Its impossible imagine that a band that created Apocalypse Please really uses a lot of crap influences for new stuffs. Was playing old decent things like creat this horrible songs like Will of the people, Wont Stand Down and another bullshits
Muse is not the same it was. They got sold out to Baphomet. Very dark stuff. No more freedom. Musics completely changed, its not created by the same people anymore. They used to sing "They will not control us, we will be victorious". They are being totally controlled now. Not a single original thing anymore. But again, what happened to them is beyond dark.
Thank you so much for this video, brilliantly constructed! Where do I sign up to the by request show? Muse fan since 2001, saw New Born live and I was addicted. I have been 3 times in last few years and whilst I was impressed with the spectacle I was somewhat underwhelmed and deflated with the setlist. Frustratingly, I don't see Muse has having much of an identity anymore and have lost sight of what made them truly great; energy, great riffs and that 'over the top' element. The song 'will of the people' is an embarrassment IMO.
Yaeh.. been there too. Waiting for 16 years. hope muse can comeback again with in future..
i saw them in Milton Keynes and it was mental. idk wtf these guys are on about. they should be thankful they're still around tbh
Which country are you from if I may ask?
💯%
muse post BHAR sucks.. deal with it..
"Perfect setlists don’t exist and will never happen" - with the existence of Shepherds Bush Empire 2017 gig, I disagree
I saw them in Houston and I was surprised when they started playing Undisclosed Desire. When I got back home, I realized it was the first time they played it in the US in 6 years
A set from just the first 3 albums would be ideal for me. (minus Time is Running Out)
I remember a noticeable shift in the shows from Black Holes on. They became more interested in engaging the crowd with anthems than tearing the roof off venues with riffs. You can't blame them I suppose. From that point on, a significant portion of the crowd were only there for the hits.
my 2 fav songs are in bh&r tho (Take a Bow and Glorious) so i kinda agree with you but first 4 albums
As a pwoper fan I’d just be happy to be there…
But alas, if they would,
PLEASE PLAY ALL OF SHOWBIZ 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Hysteria one night, Time is Running Out the other
Futurism, Fury
Uprising, Madness
We are Fucking Fucked, Animals
Muscle Museum, Showbiz
this can keep going on but I'm just gonna conclude with Knights and Stockholm Syndrome as the 2 closing tracks.
You are spot on here. #deepcutstheatertour needs to become viral and maybe then, MAYBE our tired voices would be heard. Excellent video, thank you!
Weren't they already did the "deep cuts" theater tour before the album tour?
It happened in 2016 when they played both Assassin and Citizen Erased in Poland - that was the gig of my life by the way 😃
Thanks again for the video👍
Maybe we can go together
I see you yesterdays right
WAFF isn't that popular, but it's a showstopper live. I hope it stays.
I'm French and I'm not so sure that the best fans of Muse are the French. Italians are awesome, just watch live in Italy
On peut s'accorder pour dire qu'on à la fanbase la plus organisée en tout cas
@@MrMuse14French are the best fans by far. Italians are just more passionate as a nation
Make it happen. 30 year anniversary next year
idkw i can't watch this video. but well, i assume something happened behind the scenes, hence it affect their setlist. wish i could ask them personally.
no offense but Muse got to be one of those bands/solo artists with the most difficult fans to be pleased. some things are necessary to be complained about but Muse fans are just.... *sigh.
couldn't remember the exact gig but it's in UK when they played more Absolution songs for its 20th anniv. i can't believe i read fans were still not pleased when they played Butterflies - Apocalypse again (and a deepcut from OOS i think). like, wow! all the same setlist before and when there's a change, still not pleased?
i know fans only want they make or play all stuff from OOS/Absolution over and over again but really... be grateful for a second, please. you'll never know when it'll be Muse last day. When that day comes, that's when you realise the meaning of "you don't know what you got till it's gone"
Take a look at Michael Jackson fans in 2009.
But they still don't let me down with the performance that we got.
kan.. pastu orang hype lagu2 lama je. lagu baru semua buat tak tau huhu. at least from their latest album and drones
Awesome video essay on my absolute favorite topic by someone who clearly knows what he’s talking about. Good sruff
I went to there show in Bern, although they play not many of my favorite songs it was still the best concert I’ve been too.
I went to 3 during the WOTP tour and I know a lot people people did the same or a lot more than me on the Muse Discord.
At least 15 concerts in 2022 and '23 combined)
As my first Muse concert I was grateful for the guaranteed songs too,
Time is Running Out,
Plug in Baby,
Hysteria,
Man with A Harmonica+ Knights of Cydonia,
Starlight(Althought I felt teased, my first time hearing Prelude, not knowing it was paired with Starlight I was screaming in excitement for Survival)
The beginning was magnificent with the Drones acapella setting us up for their arrival.
DRONES;
Psycho sounded much better after Drones compared to their live Drill Sergeant audios which I'm not a fan of(I'm okay with the album version),
Reapers, Isolated System+ The Handler
Revolt,
Mercy(better in Drones than Simulation with Matt on the guitar)
THE GLOBALIST, not my favorite longer Muse song, but at the concert the visuals and everything was so perfect, it was the peak of the concert, I felt like they had that in mind when they wrote it.
Apocalypse Please
SIMULATION THEORY;
both Algorithms, just like Globalist this feels like it was meant to be the highlight of the concert.
Pray + The Dark Side
Pressure
Propaganda, at the very least the slide solo was a cool thing to see live
Break it To Me, Matt proves he can do that vocal scale at the end of the chorus without depending on the auto tune affect, heard in the studio version.
Houston Jam, I'll take what I can get with the tad bits of Futurism, Unnatural Selection and Micro Cuts.
Same with the Metal Medley. Half of Stockholm Syndrome, half of New Born, the Assassin intro.
Take A Bow
WILL OF THE PEOPLE;
Didn't care for this album much except Kill or Be Killed, Ghosts, Euphoria, Liberation, and Verona.
So I got 2 of my preferred songs.
But I did enjoy everything else in concert more than I would care to listen to these songs on my own time.
Will of the People brought some fun dancy energy to Matt.
I was surprised how much I enjoyed Compliance and Halloween in concert.
Bliss, my first time getting Bliss at a concert so I'm grateful
Resistance, probably a predictable song from a Muse concert but I didn't get it my other 2 shows.
They can definitely get away with dropping Madness in EU.
Some other factors contributed to my disappointment:
- It had taken months of preparation to be able to leave Bellamy overnight with my parents.
In fact Muse Drones tour in London 02 was my son’s very first gig when he was 12 :-)
But…as much as I utterly love them, and Glasgow was a great show, I definitely felt short-changed for the first time ever.
I’m waiting for small print. Waiting verrrrry patiently.
You'll never get to hear it live, lol.
@@i.am.you.11 dont jinx it
I do hope for more setlist variety on whatever tour is next, but I didn’t think this US tour was bad in terms of variety.
For me, it comes down to a few factors:
- The band typically play between 1hr 30 and 1hr 45 minutes (depending on the venue), which for a band of their size is simply not enough.
Fantastic. I fully agree with you!
I agree
But they're getting older, u cannot expect shows to be over 2 hours that's a crazy thing to do considering how much effort they put into playing each song
@@nicki9995 tell that to Paul McCartney, who is 81 years old and still pulls a 2h+ show.
Very good video ! Brilliant job
We need to see that deep cuts tour in 2024 ! :)
The problem is that they already did a "deep cut theatre tour" in Fall 2022 and they didn't do it right, only a few deep cuts and the more the tour was going, the less deep cuts you got, just look at the NY setlist... A real shame. I know they didn't advertise it to be a deep cut tour but that's what fans wanted and were asking for.
uhm, the theatre tour was designed to promote the album and world tour? why else would it have been right after the release of WOTP.
Their best era in terms of sound and performance was 2004 but in terms of song I would say 2006 coz I love so many songs from BH&R
For the gig in ireland i managed to create a spotify playlist that was acruate 21/23 songs just because they threw in absolution anniversary songs (the crowd lost their mind for). I really shouldnt be able to do that for a band with their discography
Compared to say pearl jam where every single set is different.
Great video ! Love the way you presented and I agree with majority of the staff you said
Thank you very much for this incredible video!
I think it will be very difficult to do a literal deep cuts tour, my hopes are for teo or three by request shows in the next year, and yes a better setlist.
I will be very happy if they would include songs like Muscle museum or showbiz again, in a rotation slot if they want, but almost you rend the show unique with all these rotations
genuinely great video man! a deep cut tour would be the stuff of dreams :))))
I would love to see a deep cuts tour. And I would love to see a setlist that ends with Bliss like on Hullabaloo
Have been to see them a few times and don’t really mind the repetition. They are so established, I would think a smaller theatre tour wouldn’t appeal as much to them. If they are travelling away from loved ones, they should maximise their return.
Wow the amount of work you into this video is amazing. Incredible, thank you for sharing!! ❤🥹
Even if it was formulaic, I'm not going to lie, I had a blast at the WOTP show in Milton Keynes last month
If they ever did a deep cut UK theatre tour, the demand would be greater than a stadium tour... 😂
I'm a muse fan, I can't wait to see muse's concert in Kuala Lumpur, I hope muse can play (newborn) (unintented)✌✌😊⚘🥰🥰
It's been like this since at least 2009.
That’s a Crossover i never thought of. Nice to see Lau’
Have more songs on a cycle such as Pressure/Thought Contagion/Break It To Me for a Simulation Theory song.
Get rid of Behold the Glove.
Unfortunately, it's not just Muse who play the same songs all the time. Rammstein's 2023 tour contains the same tracks throughout the tour, there are no changes
EUPHORIA? NUH UH THEY SHOULD PLAY EUPHORIA
It's the same for Green Day, they simply stopped playing great songs from 21st century breakdown
Love Lau, she's cool as F.... Been subbed to her for years... Great musician also...💯
Cool video... New subber
🔥🎸🔥
Not to flex or anything but we got Citizen Erased at Mexico City :p
Weren't they already did the "deep cuts" tour before the album tour in several country?
I am 100% onboard with that Deep Cuts tour idea.
Not that I've got anything against JMJ but Muse are in a unique position to really mix it up between massive stadium numbers and more intimate performances in a way few bands are and they don't seem to capitalise on that nearly enough in my opinion.
thank god map of the problematique is here to stay 😭 i know that song is too good to leave from the setlist !!
Kill or be killed is a beast of a song!
Incroyable Lau !!!!
♥️🔥
I went to a muse show at a festival last summer. Only dissapointed that they didn't play Mercy and Invincible.
The one who said "anything from the last few albums" should prehaps stop listening to Muse... Just sayin'.
current shows are boring??? saw the will of the people tour and no concert will beat that
Omg watch the war of the people tour at the 02 Oct 2023...it was mind blowing. Don't know how I stumbled on your video but it sucks😊
My only problem is to get access for tickets shows so difficult to obtain if someone has a solution I'll take it
Muse if you are reading this... if you do a deep cuts tour I will quit my job and buy tickets for every show
Imagine that it should be a setlist for someone that will be able to go to only 1 concert. Thats it.
Love her getting angry hahahaha
Nahhh.. I don’t f’ing care 😂
Cool video man.
That would be an epic set list. Get Stockholm Syndrome in too.
I stopped watching as soon as you said anything bad about The Warning.
It's his opinión. That's it. No everybody is going to like the same thing
My perfect setlist
1 Exogenesis: Part 1 (Overture)
2 Bliss
3 Mk Ultra
4 Dead Inside
5 Darkshines
6 City of Delusion
7 Sunburn
8 Butterflies and Hurricanes
9 Thought Contagion
10 Supermassive Black Hole
11 Map of the Problematique
12 Psycho
13 The Handler
14 Easily
15 Dead Star
16 Showbiz
17 Assassin
18 Unintended
19 Stockholm Syndrome
20 Citizen Erased
21 Uprising
22 The Small Print
23 Animals
24 New Born
25 Knights of Cydonia
For me it's not even the setlist but their overall sound that sucks, especially the drums sound, I hate it since about 2013, the snare is too bassy and his cymbals have little to no sustain which make any heavy song sound not heavy at all (take the Mayan show for instance, compare Assassin at LA 2008 and Assassin in 2015, it's night and day).
17:14 Invincible should NEVER be placed/played above Glorious
Pearl Jam manage to play stuff from their entire career/discography in every show, and every show has a unique setlist. Matt could do the same if he wanted ro.
Muse really down when begin use shits and noise influences like Slipknot or metal shits like that. Its impossible imagine that a band that created Apocalypse Please really uses a lot of crap influences for new stuffs. Was playing old decent things like creat this horrible songs like Will of the people, Wont Stand Down and another bullshits
I was thinking that Dig Down was the low level of the band. But the song Will of the people was even worst. This band die
