amen Everyone needs to listen to something with a message. Something that means anything directly relating to them. Something that influences them to do the right(in some cases wrong) thing.
Well, the thing is, musicians are often role models beyond just their music. When people write songs that they don't represent in their own lives, it's just a melody full of empty words. That's the real drive behind enjoying musicians who write their own stuff. And if their personal lives didn't matter, then no one would care about how Britney Spears spends her own time. Bands like Anberlin really do have a message that they want you to hear.
and yes if his voice was entirely gone and he couldn't resonate, then he wouldn't be able to make a noise with his voice, now clearly he is making plenty of noise without controlling it because he is stressing his cords by requiring the volume of his voice to be dependent on his throat for resonation. instead of backing off and maintaining cords closure he doesn't. why? (ill give you a hint, its not because he likes sounding bad...)so here we are in the place we were and you still are clueless.
lol. wow, im impressed you observed that when you lose your voice, there is difficulty making sound. however, do you know why your voice will weaken when sick? it comes from the phlegm (snot)causing too much friction and thus talking or singing with a laryngal resonation is difficult becuase your cords can't vibrate fast enough to resonated loudly without coming apart (resulting in a loss of sound), now if he sang with less force put on the cords and started resonating correctly...
so clearly you regcognized what is wrong. im not really sure if you did but ill point out the main problem, he doesn't change registers and therefore he strains for those high notes that should be sung in head voice. and changing registers is very important.and i expect the fans to back him up, hell im a big fan of anberlin, but this performance shines light on somethings that need to be improved, majorly if i want to find someone who agrees all i need is someone who is educated on the matter...
wow... 1. singing isn't a subjective activity. its a pretty dang well understood physical process that doesn't require much interpretation. so yes if we are talking abut painting then you would be correct. however singing is limited to the constrains of the HUMAN BODY. there is no room to "create" a new way to sing...lol 2. true. but when they sound better than him... 3. the technical aspects of singing are still a part of the song itself. so choose to ignore it if you want...
what do you think stephen chritian would say to you if someone like you told him he needs to change the way he sings so his vocals have a better chance of not getting recked
the guy could use a singing lesson or two. watch his larynx (adams apple) move up and down, that means he uses the muscles in his neck to change pitch. he doesn't use any other register except chest. so to sing the high stuff he pushes, we call that "pulling chest".
see this goes back to what i was saying earlier... avid fans read a fair critique and instead of taking the critique for what it is... you all try and dispute it but you have no idea what your saying. so when i tell you he is singing incorrectly it would behoove you to understand i just might have a little more command of this subject then you or anyone else who has made a stupid comment that flaunts their lack of knowledge.
he's nervous. lol. you can tell. XDD scratching his head...lol. and the guitarist messed up on one chord. lol. this is great thou! :D i love his voice! :)
I understand what you mean completely. But whether or not it SHOULD happen, we are influenced by their lives. I guess the real point I'm trying to make is that their own faith is in fact very important, because it's the entire drive behind who they are and what they write. I think we kind of strayed from that, but I think it's where we started, right? It's just ignorant to take a very specific, important message and just pretend it's something completely different.
i agree with stven, singing from the throat when singing that high can strain your vocals very badly. and Nosh321, i don't think stven ever mentioned that he was comparing himself to anberlin, so don't go calling people wannabe when you really have no base for your allegations.
ok and now i know the whole story... and do you know why you made that comment? because you didn't know this piece of info... when you have connected all the registers and cordinated medial cord closure, you can STILL sing with out flipping into falsetto or pulling chest voice (which is what steven is doing in this vid). if he knew the correct way to sing, if wouldn't make a difference whether he was sick or not. and clearly, once again you didn't have any idea about that and made this comment..
he's dying to reach the high notes.. and the part where he should scream ''frieeeeends'' he chooses the lower notes unlike the song. how do they do otherwise in studios i dono
so read this carefully... steven sounds bad because he is not singing correctly, im not sure how he usually sings but this performance suggests that this lack of technique is pretty consist with his voice.even if he is sick, he should be able to sing and at least match pitch without pulling chest voice or inducing some other laryngeal strain. so this is the part where you say "oh now i understand, and i will considering this info before making a comment to save me some embarrassment."
classically trained eh? well this video does no justice to this extensive "training". you are a musician? im guessing a singer? how many years did you study voice? can you point what is wrong with Stephens singing in this video? depending on how you answer those questions, i will validate your comment or discard as another misinformed fanatic with no real argument...
that last comment says alot about your expertise of music. art is where technique is juxtaposed with passion. bob dylan has passion and he can't sing worth crap. you don't have to be a rockstar to know that, but you do need some degree of formal training and education to understand the importance of technique. and untill you've reached that intellectual plateau ill leave you with your "feel good" misinformed ideas of music. so please learn you stuff then we can talk.
Hey bro. He was sick, you can talk like you know what your saying and you can complain about someones lack of intellect but the thing you can't do is mock someone when you don't know the half of the story.
omygosh i totally agree about the fans. this band is a christian band; they just want to glorify God...the fans are making them all idolistic and i just think thats wrongg.
someone can sing incorrectly and still be popular. im not saying he isn't a great artist, but rather he lacks some fundemental aspects of singing. and you consistently deny that as if you knew what i was talking about in the first place. thats why i recomended you learn somethings before arguing with me about his vocal technique or lack thereof. all you've said is "hes a popuar singer". clearly i know that. but that doesn't give any substantial response in a discussion about singing.
ok being popular doesn't mitigate singing ability. just because the general population likes what they hear, they don't know squat about singing. to them it sounds good or bad. so being famous isn't impressive if you don't have technique. most people aren't informed enough to make an accurate judgment...because most people like you are diehard fans with no knowledge except for their love of an artist.thats why i didn't expect you to understand this critique.so you can't aruge if your uninformed.
and if you had any education on the matter, you wouldn't have made such a clearly misinformed comment. stephen does need it, you wouldn't understand that so i won't ask you to try. so when you have any idea what you are talking about, you are allowed to argure with me. until you are excused for the sake of your dignity.
Sorry I couldn't understand that poor grammar. Do you know what happens when your loseing your voice? Apparently not, so lemme reinform you... Loseing your voice comes along with being sick sometimes, when your loseing your voice there is no possible way you can sing right by far. But thanks for wasteing my time having to read all of that nonsense.
not true. first its "muscle" not mustle... and your voice is not a muscle, your vocal fold are two flaps of tissues. the only muscle involved with singing is in using your diaphram. which has nothing to with a sore throat... and (once again ignorance of the subject prevails over logic) you can still sing on pitch without straining when your sick. you won't be as loud but you cords can still vibrate enough to match pitch. this guys is straining to make a sound because he isn't singing right.
owe and i think you missing a key part of your incredible misuse of the English language when you left out the "n't" in wouldn't, which makes your supreme use of diction seem even more delusional and discrediting.
Seen Anberlin twice...the most recent this past Monday. They are awesome and emit such amazing passion when they perform.

Everyone needs to listen to something with a message. Something that means anything directly relating to them. Something that influences them to do the right(in some cases wrong) thing.
anberlin rocks !!!!
i love how core these guys are. they don't use all the auto tune crap like most bands
that is badass
Effing awesome.

The song includes both "violins" and "violence". It's a play on words, sound and meaning.
Joey is fuc*** awesone!
and yes if his voice was entirely gone and he couldn't resonate, then he wouldn't be able to make a noise with his voice, now clearly he is making plenty of noise without controlling it because he is stressing his cords by requiring the volume of his voice to be dependent on his throat for resonation. instead of backing off and maintaining cords closure he doesn't. why? you dont have to use vulgarity cos i did a mistake..
see this goes back to what i was saying earlier... avid fans read a fair critique and instead of taking the critique for what it is... you all try and dispute it but you have no idea what your saying. so when i tell you he is singing incorrectly it would behoove you to understand i just might have a little more command of this subject then you or anyone else who has made a stupid comment that flaunts their lack of knowledge.
i really like this version so i did a cover of it by watching feel free to check it out.
haha i love joseph's chubby fingers
he's nervous. lol. you can tell. XDD scratching his head...lol. and the guitarist messed up on one chord. lol. this is great thou! :D i love his voice! :)
did i make a fun of the song? did i?.. like i said previously it was mistake.. i know you're a big fan of anberlin..
its acoustic, its always different
I will fight anyone who rags on his voice. I will join anyone who runs after him with a pair of scissors and hair color correction. And a sandwich.
I understand what you mean completely. But whether or not it SHOULD happen, we are influenced by their lives.

@X101Andy its not like i was hating on them. grow up. btw, tht was 9 months ago. honestly

cheeky bastard!!
News flash, that's just two regular dudes up there, it's not supposed to be flawless.
I miss O-rock, now they have sonny or whatever.
he's dying to reach the high notes.. and the part where he should scream ''frieeeeends'' he chooses the lower notes unlike the song. how do they do otherwise in studios i dono
Hes breathing wrong but its still really good :).
*oh*
The singer looks like Marty mcflys dad on back to the future!
so read this carefully... steven sounds bad because he is not singing correctly, im not sure how he usually sings but this performance suggests that this lack of technique is pretty consist with his voice.even if he is sick, he should be able to sing and at least match pitch without pulling chest voice or inducing some other laryngeal strain.

"oops my bad" (not the real words)
classically trained eh? well
this video does no justice to this extensive "training". you are a musician? im guessing a singer? how many years did you study voice? can you point what is wrong with Stephens singing in this video? depending on how you answer those questions, i will validate your comment or discard as another misinformed fanatic with no real argument...

lol sounds like hes outa breathe on this one..
but great voice anyhow
omygosh i totally agree about the fans.
this band is a christian band; they just want to glorify God...the fans are making them all idolistic and i just think thats wrongg.
yes i am soooo jealous of that strained, off pitch sound. let me tell you about my deep jealous for not being able to sing inncorrectly....
yeah seriously...
someone can sing incorrectly and still be popular. im not saying he isn't a great artist, but rather he lacks some fundemental aspects of singing. and you consistently deny that as if you knew what i was talking about in the first place. thats why i recomended you learn somethings before arguing with me about his vocal technique or lack thereof. all you've said is "hes a popuar singer". clearly i know that. but that doesn't give any substantial response in a discussion about singing.

haha. not as tall though

The song is really good, but how he sings now :/ I'm not really impressed

something funny?

his voice is suckin right there. he is usually good. not so much there.
