When the interviewer is accustomed to being the center of attention, it can be a problem. What we don't always realize is that the producer is constantly whispering in their air to "ask this" or "bring up xyz" and "break here for a commercial". Now, I don't know what the issue was here with Dr. Drew who can, at times, be narcissistic and other times appear to be present, listening and compassionate. Interviews like this often have a kind of agenda of topics they want included, and it's all about making money, not necessarily about providing viewers and listeners with a feeling of our expectations being met. The most skilled interviewers not only ask poignant questions, they listen and wait for the best moment to do so. Dr. Drew is a psychiatrist (medical doctor who writes prescriptions, not a psychologist who offers therapy) first, and you can see he is not a true pro in this realm.
Drew is stopping Sammy to comfort him. He sees and hears he's hurting himself feeling guilty for things he said in the book. Drew himself says the book didn't read like Sammy felt pain dishing dirt on EVH for substance abuse. I read the book and Dave Roth's book. Highly recommend. Also check out Rudy Sarzo's book Off the Rails about Randy Rhodes. Slash has a good book.
Probably a tactic to agitate him and maybe get a good sound bite and some dirt. "I don't think what you already said is dirt." Alleviating his feeling of guilt for telling the truth while simultaneously agitating him. It's a sly little tactic.

One of the hardest things some of us have to overcome is that people don't care as much as we think they do or care as much as we do for them. At least that's what I'm going thru in life now in my mid 50s. When I was 17 my uncle was in his 40s then and I'll never forget what he told me back then. He said someday you'll do good to have one friend. I thought then he was crazy. Turns out he was right.
Don't worry Sammy, you didn't say anything about that '04 tour that the concert goers didn't already know. My wife and I were at one of those shows and (unfortunately) saw Eddie's behavior first hand. He was crying onstage, talking gibberish into the mic, and just making a lot of noise where the solos should have been. Both of us kept saying "something's wrong". Glad to hear he's doing better now.
One thing that Sam was always known for was being friendly, cool and personable. I remember seeing people talk about that on TV, even when VH was at #1, in the Hagar years.

I have been very distraught about losing Ed. I can't imagine how Al's taking it. Never a finer musician in the rock era than Ed. If he'd made 100 more records I'd have bought them all... Especially if Sam was on them!

I was at their 2004 reunion show in Vegas and yes Ed didn’t look well and he played terribly too. His playing was off key and his solo just sounded like he was improvising nonsense. The band looked frustrated as well as Alex. He struggled that whole show with Ed. I think Ed was drunk the whole show, REALLY DRUNK. Was embarrassing to witness.

I was at their 2004 reunion show in Vegas and yes Ed didn’t look well and he played terribly too. His playing was off key and his solo just sounded like he was improvising nonsense. The band looked frustrated as well as Alex. He struggled that whole show with Ed. I think Ed was drunk the whole show, REALLY DRUNK. Was embarrassing to witness.

I agree with some of the comments here. Classic Dr. Drew interview. The entire staff of celebrity hosts on HLN have the attitude of censorship!. Sammy is telling his true impressions, he is being honest and open and "Einstein complex" Drew wants to control him!. The audience gets robbed of the truth. WTF!
