As a chemical engineer I shall correct one statement: baking soda is a chemical , too. This is NaHCO₃, Sodium hydrocarbonate. It is not a poison, however. By pouring it into the soil the pH and the sodium content are getting unfavorable for some of the weeds , so they die out. So it mostly works.
Baking soda is great for roofs but you have to be careful changing soil ph in your lawn. Grass likes 6.2 to 7. You go over that and go too alkaline and you're gonna have problems.
Great video, thank you! Love that it is all natural and very low cost. Love how you said time to spray and pray, spraying is good and so is praying! Sure appreciate you making this video, it is very informative & I'm going to try it very soon at my aunt's house. Her and I are now on a mission to get rid of the moss...We WILL win this battle! 😎
You're mistaken sir. Baking soda IS a chemical too. People need to get it through their heads that chemicals aren't necessarily bad. The food we eat is ALL chemicals, albeit a very complex mixture thereof. Now cost is another thing entirely. Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) is way cheaper than iron sulphate or most all of the commercially saleable preparations!
Thank you. I’m going to try this. Last year I fell and broke my humerus bone on my right arm because I slipped in moss. I will be giving this a try. Thank you.
Chemical compound Sodium bicarbonate, commonly known as baking soda or bicarbonate of soda, is a chemical compound with the formula NaHCO₃. It is a salt composed of a sodium cation and a bicarbonate anion. Sodium bicarbonate is a white solid that is crystalline, but often appears as a fine powder.??????
Ever hear of a funnel? If you don't have one handy then you can use a makeshift one made out of a piece of paper or cardboard. Or perhaps cut off and use top part of a water bottle.
I'm sorry to tell you this, but sodium bicarbonate, commonly known as baking soda or bicarbonate of soda, is a chemical compound. It has the formula NaHCO₃.
I have one year-old baking soda in my fridge and freezer to remove odors. Is it still effective enough to be used as the moss spray or should I just buy a new box?
About 16 ounces. You can adjust the amount of water for how strong you want it to be. I found that to be the sweet spot to get the most bang for your buck. You can always adjust based on your situation.
@@BackyardLawnandGarden I have a fairly large area, and I hope the grass will take when I renovate in the fall, but I’m trying to do stuff now to get ready for that.
Yes, baking soda can also kill the grass. You would want to use this as a targeted application instead of a blanket application. Once you get rid of the moss you’ll want to take the necessary steps to figure out the underlying reasons that moss is present and then correct it.

I moved into a house where the owner didn't take care of their back yard. Most of the backyard is moss. Literally. It's even climbing up a tree and growing on the foundation a bit. One night I could have sworn I heard the moss cackling and saying that it's now coming after me. Is now the time to go to a wholesale store and buy baking soda in bulk? Or should I resort to a commercial product?
Either would work but given that you are trying to do your entire backyard, the commercial product would be easier to spread. At the end of the day, do what you think is best for you and your situation
I hate to be ‘that person’ but this is not a chemical free way to kill moss. Sodium bicarbonate (Baking Soda) is a chemical. It would be good to know of the long term effects on the soil from using this and whether it’s better or worse than using specific weed killers (which is what I guess you mean by chemicals). I can’t imagine it would be that bad though and bicarb is often touted as a cleaning product in a home, so it’s probably at least no worse. I wonder what miss killer is really made up of. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was something that was equally cheap as bicarb but stuck in a bag with some fancy branding so they can jack the price up. It’s certainly way cheaper your way and I’ll be giving it a go. Thanks for showing us!
100%, and also, are you going to put grass seed directly on top of the dead moss? Or are you going to scrape it away and put some good composted soil as a medium for your grass seed, in which case why are you bothering with the baking soda?
People are ignorant that “chemicals” make up EVERYTHING! Without chemicals there are no atoms or molecules. People are scared of the term, but they don’t realize what it even means!
For pavement or concrete I would recommend to use a pressure washer. Even if you used baking soda, eventually you’ll want to get it off. I’m not an expert on concrete but salts usually cause the most damage.
@@BackyardLawnandGarden ... Yes ok, I found out the hard way not to use ice melting salt on concrete, because we had a major ice freeze last end of December over 4 months ago. I believe melting salt is part regular table salt, with calcium & magnesium. We had a small concrete walkway where some of its upper crust got lifted off due to the salt. It looks sort of crappy now. I will test with baking soda. I have used pressure washer & I was looking for a longer term solution because they eventually grow back a few months later. There seem to be products that inhibit algae & moss growth, such as something called "Stay Clean" etc, so I will look into that. Another thing I need is some kind of slug/snail barrier & deterrent, that not makes them crawl onto the concrete so they just turn back. I want to sprinkle table salt but then that would also damage the concrete, just like the ice melt did. I don't want to kill them or else you're stepping onto dead squishy slimey slugs which you will track under shoe into your home.

Ok now lets save on the spillage, simply get a jug with a spout, put the baking soda into the jug then fill the jug, mix the ingredients and then pour into the bottle, put on spray lid and spray onto the moss.
That moss isn’t dead!! It turns black when it is. Slight yellowing is not dead. Just throw some 20% iron down and get the added benefit of a nice green up. You’re welcome
