In this excerpt from our Hand Puppet Detail and Finishing Techniques, Part 2: Eyes, Ears, Noses, & Facial Hair, world-renowned puppeteer and puppet builder BJ Guyer teaches how to straighten and also get different textures from faux fur after it’s been washed. Straightening puppet fur is helpful when it appears crimped, creased, or clumped - ultimately, it's not how you’d prefer it to look. Depending on your application, the techniques discussed can revive fur that is not ideal, ultimately giving it the look of realistic fur.
    BJ Guyer explains how to:
    - Brush Out Puppet Fur
    - Apply Controlled Heat to Faux Fur
    - Use a Heat Gun on Fur
    - Trim Fake Fur to Add More Texture
    - Test Different Creative Techniques on Puppet Fur

Goggles are also good to wear for treating and trimming fur. I find particulates can easily get in the air and in your lungs, but they can just as easily get in your eyes or on your hands and then you touch your eyes.
I know it can be another ‘thing’ to add in the process, or seem like overkill, but your health is all you’ve got at the end of the day sometimes. It’s important to take the cautious in your power to keep your body safe.
Thank you for sharing this with us, I always find dealing with fur and wigs to be overwhelming. A lot of the time I avoid projects altogether just because I’ll have to handle the stuff. This gives some really helpful advice

The most important thing to do to fur like this isto brush it while it is drying. This prevents the knotting in the first place.

Hi @Allmenshouldrespectallwomen, the puppet "fur" being used is all synthetic and no animal fur was used in this lesson. - Matt
