When I turned 10, long time ago, my Mom invited me to the movies and immediately I said Gorgo but the my older brother made a big fuss because he wanted to watch a Disney movie about a seal named Sammy and, as always, Mom yield and never saw the movie,that is, until today. King Kong broke loose in New York and climbed Empire State Building, Ymir in 20 million miles to earth went to farm, cirucus and Roman Coliseum, Octopus in It a Came from beneath the sea attacked Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco, Flying saucer movie blew up the White house and Capitol. Giant Gila monster and 50 foot woman were in small towns.
Me too especially when the monsters don't mean any harm they just want to be left alone we humans always ruin everything exploiting everything all for the almighty buck I saw gorgo when I was 8 years old at the theater scared the heck out of me when the big one came out of the water and crushed that house that night in my bed it was raining outside and I was scared as hell thinking that gorgo was going to step on my house God was I scared I am 69 years old now and that scene of gorgo stepping on that house still scares me LOL
@@albertrandall6388 I had the same EXACT issues, but with the original Godzilla!!! That had a rainstorm progressing, in it too. I never saw that scene, you're describing (and I grew up with it), and through all the years, until this time. That WAS, quite a disturbing part.
Of course none of the "man in the monster suit" movies seem real. They aren't the monster movies of today where the sky is the limit. These movies like Gorgo, Godzilla and others have a certain charm of their own. To a kid growing up in the 60s and 70s, these movies were awesome and exciting. I love them to this day!
I remember seeing this movie when I was a lot younger and found it action packed and thrilling. Even today after 60 years, I still enjoy it. And with a happy ending for the monsters. Thanks for posting it. Joe S.
Man was this a great film! I "saved" watching it for when I could sit down and really enjoy it, and I'm so glad I did! What's amazing is this movie is over 60 years old and, I gotta say, a lot of the effects hold up! I mean, its not fooling us, but they are very respectable! And Gorgo always looks like a man in a suit, but that's just part of the fun! This is a great movie and I'm so glad I finally took the time to watch it.
I saw this classic at a local theater back in 1961 when it was originally released! Loved it then.... still one of my all-time favorites! I have it on both DVD and BluRay, still own the original Charlton comic edition with Steve Ditko's incredible art and have a model of the title beastie, itself in my collection. How I wish that one of the studios would remake this movie with today's technology! Bring back GORGO!
The models were well made, and the camera special effects was state of art for 61, this movie must have been expensive to make, and not just another giant monster movie back then

Saw GORGO in the Cinema, as a boy in '61 and loved it, along with "Dinosaurus," a year earlier. Also, "The Time Machine" (1960) is a great one with an all-star cast...........including Rod Taylor.
The Time Machine is one of my favorite films too! And also "Journey to the Center of the Earth" the one with James Mason and Pat Boone...although the dinosaurs in that film were pretty tacky...

"This towering apperition from before, the dawn of history". Always liked 'Gorgo', since I was a little boy. It's the little boy, friendly Godzilla-like, giant lizard, picture!! This is basically, the Irish Godzilla of it's day.
This is a well made movie. The way the monsters move, the cityscape set, the depiction of people trying to escape, everything is similar to Japanese monster movies. You do a lot of research on Japanese tokusatsu films. Did a Japanese film company cooperate?

There were scenes in Godzilla where the man in the suit looked pretty good. When he was approaching the power lines, was one that comes to mind. Gorgo wasn't too bad in a few spots either, but no, man in a suit, monster, can compare to Gorgo, or his mother, with the ears. First thing I noticed the first time I saw it. They even wiggled a few times. Outstanding.
Hurrah for the monster...! I saw Gorgo in a movie theater when I was only 11 and at the end of the movie I was jumping on my seat of joy watching her getting away with her little brat.

@@jonesy4588 I heard somewhere that the reason why the director allowed Gorgo(na) to live was because he had gone to see some monster movie with his llittle daughter and the monster was killed in the end and she had started crying for the deceased monster. So he decided to make another monster movie in which the monster would live. Kudos for that little girl, she rendered a service to millions of us.

The director of Gorgo was also the director of The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms (1953), which inspired Godzilla (they don't like to admit that) and then Godzilla inspired Gorgo. Always wondered how the Brits felt about seeing London Bridge and Big Ben (which survived World War Two) destroyed on screen in an American monster movie. I was surprised they never made a sequel although there were about 20 issues of Gorgo comics, issue one being an adaptation of this movie. Issue one was reprinted in a 1966 comic called Fantastic Giants.
It was a co-production of the United Kingdom, United states and Ireland, it was filmed at Borehamwood studios Hertfordshire England and Bulloch Harbour near Dalkey in Ireland, the cast and star Bill Travers were English, not everything was made entirely in America.

It does seem kinda ridiculous that NOTHING would work. I know that some animals have thick skins, but you can still take them down with heavier weaponry.
Personally, as a Londoner, I loved it. I never saw it as an American film, as others have explained it was a co-production anyway. As a kid I just thrilled at seeing places I knew well being smashed by my favourite kind of film star... a giant reptilian monster :) I've been a big fan since then and am so glad to see Gorgo getting some recognition after all these years (a whole load of new merch is on the way). Hopefully he'll be back on the big screen one day!
It's funny that this movie and another one called Konga were 2 giant monster movies filmed in London and that a lot of the major fighting took place near Big Ben but unlike in Konga where the famous clocktower was still standing and the climax of the film in the movie Gorgo the tower took a direct hit from missiles and the rest of it was toppled over by the title Monster along with half of London including it's famous bridge giving a whole new meaning to the song 'London Bridges falling down London Bridges falling DOWN'.

Yes this flick is campy and silly. But let’s not forget this is Englands first shot at a this genre, and the miniatures are excellent, even better than the Japanese godzilla miniatures
It's 3:03 a.m. in Winnipeg here in Canada. I've gotten up really early so I can organize my last 3 (4?) years of income tax receipts, but I think I'll watch "Gorgo" instead.

Now in my late 60's it was a bit boring, but somewhat interesting. That big mom of a lizard was certainly pissed that her baby lizard was kidnaped to be used for profit. Can't blame her for that. But all and all a happy ending.
What I find cute about this movie is that Gorgo destroys half of London and every major city landmark but she wisely stays away from Buckingham Palace and Downing St. 10. It seems "she" had managed to get thoroughly informed about local social and political sensitivities before getting on with her rampage.

A fun movie with a "Monster" budget ... Awesome !
Stunningly better than 1976 King Kong. Brings home it isn't how you do the effects but how well you do the effects.

I just started watching the credits, and I'm already scared! 😂 : NOW I remember: I saw this movie when I was only 9 years old. Thought it was cool. And EVERYBODY smoked in those days.
