I'm so disappointed as a female player. Not necessarily because of the lack of males but because i know that they're going to start prioritizing male fan service over actual story and characterization. I've been a fan of genshin for awhile now and it actually makes me so sad.

That argument is always so stupid lmao, Zhongli and Kazuha are both male yet they sell very well. It all comes down to kit tbh, no matter the gender, no matter the design, no matter the lore, if a character has a busted kit im sure everyone want to pull for them
Hoyo thinks we are stupid. They use the lamest excuses when they dont want to do something. Remember the whole not adding endgame excuse because they didn't want to stress the players out? And yet the most stressful thing in this game is losing 50/50's and rolling on the weapon banner. But no, they are talking nonsense when they say male characters will drive the female players away? What? Bro they are just straight up lame. The only way to get them to do anything is complain, and complain alot, also don't spend money on their games.

If they did, no one would be playing the game, most people don't see them selves as the character, which is a bit cringe. i don't put my self in a video game character so i can easily play either one.
As a completely straight female, I agree with you. When a story focuses on only one gender for no specific reason, it makes the story monotonous at some extent.
Idk about my sexuality but as a girl i understand you. I love playing as cute girls and feminine guys because they resonate with me more than masc characters. However it's also tiring to see how most of gacha rpg female characters are just happy/non problematic obedient two dimensional waifus to attract male gooners with black and white morality. It's getting harder to enjoy an archetype (moe feminine characters) that primarily attracts scary and creepy fans :(
I've found Western and Japanese male players seem to have no issue with pulling male characters, but in China and Korea, where Hoyo listens more, there's a big aversion to them amongst the most vocal parts of the community.

the equal gender ratio was what made genshin stand out, it made the game have actual characters instead of others in the genre that only have waifus and husbandos.
Eh, I'd argue almost every single character in this game is too one dimensional to be described as having an actual personality, if that's what you mean. But still, it did make genshin stand out.

Which is dumb because the player demographic is almost evenly split to begin with. And it's not just female players pulling on male characters, both genders of all ages do. They pull BOTH.
Hoyo stupidly proves to themselves that players don't want male characters by releasing not much useful male 4* and very strong female 5*. When players favor those strong famale 5*(like Xilonen, Mavuika, Arle, Furina) Hoyo thinks that players want more females instead of weak Sethos, Ororon and yet to be released, but probably weak, Ifa. As a genshin player, I feel bored with the lack of male characters. Not that I hate female characters, but if I wanted to have only female characters I would be playing Honkai Impact instead of Genshin

most popular ships being mlm is js hoyo yaoibaiting and it's very much a tactic meant to keep the girlies interested. it's okay though, the game already has little to offer to straight female audience fanservice-wise, they gotta do what they gotta do 😭 but even their yaoi game has been weak since fontaine. afaik there's no big couple in natlan, neither yaoi nor yuri
As a bisexual, I mostly pull for male characters. I mean, I love girls but I hate how most of their stories are so... Bland. Some of the female characters feel like they are only there for fanservice. And that doesn't always apply to male characters (of course, there are exceptions). Personally, I only pull for characters I absolutely adore in terms of story and development
They also tend to have female characters that are amazing in the story but the moment they have their own sidequest they become “waifu #5” (like Nilou, my girl was done so dirty 😢) On the other side, male characters that flirt with the traveller are treated with more depth than the female ones, like Lyney.

I pulled for Kinich, unfortunately I knew about Ajaw more, BUT I found him interesting. I've noticed it's rarely when female characters well written. For example, Tartaglia had one of amazing story quest, his character is bad and good at the same time, it's..grey, like people in general. It makes him realistic. Or Baizhu, I like his character and story, I REALLY enjoyed his quest(and wanna pull for him) But what about most female characters? They're just...some of anime cliche? It's not bad, cliche can work, but...I can't say anything about Xilonen, seriously. Genshin is trying to attract more players so I think out of fandom popularity characters might be focused one more since they attract people. I think most people outside the genshin community know wanderer way more than Furina and Nahida. If you point at a picture of Wanderer many people will know him over Furina because he’s older (release wise) and has a possibly bigger fan base. Nahida isn’t that popular outside of genshin, I’ve seen more merch of Hu Tao and Klee than her
Slight correction about 404's info: it's not that they think male characters are making people quit/not join the game. It's that they pivoted to appeal to a HI3 audience (incels) as a reaction to the shrinkage in the gacha market. I guess they think that if they appeal heavily to the incels it will make up for the fewer new players by creating more whales. I kind of wonder if Da Wei's increasing influence on Genshin led to this...but I dunno. It's happening in all their games. ZZZ needs no explanation, Genshin only having Kinich in 2024, HSR went from 6 > 4 > 3 limited men from 1.X to 3.X. I am more and more convinced that Sumeru and Fontaine were peak of the game. Natlan is... strange. The story, locations and music are good, but the design! Design - is the main problem with Natlan and its characters!
AGREED 💯💯 sumeru and fontaine were literally amazing in all regards- had me so hyped up for the future of genshin, bc every player was eating good and the story was incredible. fast forward to natlan being completely disproportionate to the rest of teyvat… turning into a waifu simulator… the designs making no sense….. heres to hoping for a good snezhnaya 🥲

I'm seeing husbando enjoyers actually thinking about leaving, because they have too many pulls and no banners in Natlan that interest them yet. These leaks about the only confirmed upcoming male character being Ifa (4*) have caused the opposite reaction. Not to mention that Wriothesley holds the curse of being a man AND cryo so he hasn't had a rerun when almost everyone in Fontaine has, some even more than once. Some male 4* who are liked by female players have taken over a year to have reruns, like Kaveh and Heizou. idk what they're thinking, especially when their second biggest market, Japan, adores a lot of male Genshin characters (Kinich is really popular there because of his and Ajaw's VAs.) Even the Chinese incels' worst nightmare, Wanderer, keeps winning popularity polls in weibo. Personally, despite liking male characters a lot more I pull for characters of all genders, but it's reached a point where I've been getting a lot of accidental 5*s this year trying to get the new boys because, except for Kinich, they've all been 4*! It's even more vile when you think about it because you're not guaranteed, so husbando collectors will end up pulling on a banner forever since they can't get even C0 Ororon. I got 3 early Chascas. While trying to pull Sethos, I got one Nahida and one Dehya. I know, my own fault for building pity, but this hasn't happened to me before this often.

I ABSOLUTELY agree about husbando enjoyers, since I myself have pulled weapon event FOR THE FIRST TIME recently, just because I don't know where else to spend my pulls. The only character I really want to pull is Cyno, but I have most of the other chracters I wanted. I really think that if no new 5* male characters appear, my plan is next: 1) Wait for Cyno 2) Pull for weapons 3) Pull for constellations 4) Pull for any male characters and avoid pulling for female characters on principle Earlier I wouldn't spend any primogems on weapon or constellations bcs I thought I still have more nice guys to pull for, but THAT'S how bad the situations with guys is. That bad that recently I pulled my first 5* on weapon event, Neuvillette's weapon
@acheba_nitsa I'm actually a C2R1 Cyno main and his weapon is super worth it. If you're going next for him and you're also maining Neuvi, may I suggest trying to get Baizhu from the Liyue banner now if you don't have him already? He might disappear after 5.3 and he's pretty good in teams for both of them. I think he's a better investment for a future Cyno than his cons
It's so sad cause their so good at making both boy and girl characters, but their making less boys because they think their girl players aren't as important and they think most people only like characters of the opposite gender, but outside of the boys that only watch anime for the sexy girls that constantly have fanservice, the gender of the characters doesn't really matter if a character will be popular. As a lesbian myself i tend to actually prefer the boys in anime because the girls just aren't that well written but in genshin i love a lot of the girls and boys, i don't want genshin to turn into just another boring series that wants the money from boys that only want to sexualize the girls.

They have basically proven 404 right with the last live stream. In the silhouette teaser, everyone to the left of skirk is theorized to be a 4* (Iansan, Dahlia, Ifa) and everyone to the right of Skirk including Skirk herself would be 5*. They said so themselves they want to return to their roots, which is waifu games like HI3 and GGZ. Everyone else was just a nice bump of cash along the way to put Genshin into mainstream, but now that they don't need the publicity/growth anymore they are showing their 'true' colors.
Oh I also forgot their "we only listen to the real travelers" comment. It's pretty clear they think male Otaku are the real travelers and female players, "normies" and gays are not. This all despite the fact that Genshin only reached its current levels of popularity because of these players. Honestly no one is asking for men on waifu games like Nikke and AL, but a lot of people are unhappy with this rug pull in Genshin because they literally set the expectations themselves from 1.0

@@ErisNoir Tbh I still enjoyed the game in Fontaine and probably would've also defended them back then. But you can feel the shift towards the end of Fontaine/4.8 Summer and then more so as we go into Natlan. It's not just the ratio of characters either, its the world immersion, character designs, and impact to the story that comes along with the further skewed ratios. I'm also not a fan of the Nightsoul mechanic and how its more impactful to the meta than pneuma-ousia was, not even touching on powercreep and how crazy some constellations like Xilonen's are. I genuinely don't want to pull for that many Natlan characters, but skipping them inconveniences me not just in abyss but also overworld exploration becomes more cumbersome if you're a "have-not" (on my account every region 100% except for Natlan atm) Back in Fontaine if someone had told me that they wanted to scale down male characters further I would've said "Nah, this is probably the sweet spot between appeasing the CN ifmalenoplay players but also not making the game a generic waifu gacha either, they won't change the formula too dramatically" but after the change over from Cai Haoyu to Da Wei somehow the situation has further degraded beyond my expectations...

Also people don't just pull for characters that they're atracted to, there's a bunch of reasons for liking a character, i don't fell attracted to any characters so i mainly pull for the ones i like story-wise or for gameplay. If they think male characters don't sell enough (which is factualy not true but whatever), they should put more effort in their story and kit, literally every archon quest the characters with the most screentime are always women, and even as a woman myself, it just feels weird, it would be understandable if Teyvat was just lacking on male population, but why are the men so absent, i work in a female-dominated field and the feeling is completely different, because the few men that are there actually do something. And it feels like sometimes a male character that is important to the main story ends up being a 4 star (Kaeya, Thoma, Ororon), like can't Hoyo just give both genders the same treatment?

They can make a male character with the one of the coolest lore, yet the same character getting Powercreep by the other character who doesn't even have the good writing to begin with. Take example for Diluc, in lore, he was said to be able to beat an army of Fatui, The Harbringer even calling him a real threat. In reality he was getting powercreep by Hu Tao, who canonically is the weakest character in story.

I think doing this is genshin or HSR is genuinely a horrible idea. Like i can understand HI3 not having males. That's how the game started, That's how it was for years, and even if i wish i could play as Kevin or Otto, i won't judge. Same thing for ZZZ. The game has the coolest and most unique looking male characters in any hoyo game imo, but the target audience for the game has been very clear to everyone from before it even released. It's a combat game with a lot of fanservice MOSTLY aimed at men. So i expect them to only drop 2 or 3 males per version and won't really cry about it. On the other hand both Genshin and HSR have a waaay bigger female audience. And a more even ratio of male/female characters. Changing this is basically betraying your core audience. This is a dumb move clearly.

damn... it hurts to go from being absolutely in love with a game and playing it for hours every day for years to hating almost every single decision thats being made for it now. If somebody would have told me 4 years ago that I would now be considering to stop playing genshin entirely, I wouldn't have believed them, yet here I am.

I think that all comution in China to make Ororon a 5 star should have been enough proof that male characters are profitable. So I really don't understand Genshin decision on that. Maybe in the next region they will take that feedback, but we know that Genshin normally takes 4 years to understand some feedback... so we wait...

To this day, the video is known as "that one Kaeya edit" and it keeps getting views. If Mihoyo wants popularity, they should move according to the preferences of the general audience with the ability to get into trends and make content for the game, not some degenerate guys who can't even realize forced fanservice. The path they are taking will only provide short-term success, but Gacha games depend heavily on popularity and the support they get from the gamers. They are sacrificing what made Genshin survive for years.
That explains too why the designs are getting more and more like they were characters meant for ZZZ or Star Rail. ZZZ is already almost unplayable to me for the T&A pandering. I was already mad that many of the Natlan char designs don't suit Teyvat; this just adds more to that same irriation.
really? zzz is my first hoyo game so i may be completely wrong here. i'm a male liker so it might just be because i'm not paying much attention, but while yeah there are some big chests, nicole, burnice and the one cop character feel like the only ones that are pronounced enough to be pandering. (i think nicole is debatable because her design communicates about her character traits, as opposed to fanservice for the sake of it)

The more female characters they release, the less unique and interesting each female character becomes (and vice-versa). There are only so many different backstories and personalities that Hoyo can innovate before they have to start cannibalizing previous characters' identities in order to continue releasing new characters. I main Clorinde, but would fork over all my primo savings for a tall male character in heavy plate armor.
+1. Sadly, sometimes the quality just drops because how much female characters they release. Many female characters has the same personality and traits, sometimes it's just a generic waifu and that's it. I think that Sumeru was very good in terms of female characters and how everyone had such a different personality (males too) from each other. Natlan feels a little bland :(( Mualani being the generic bubbly and happy waifu, literally Yoimiya v2 for example. In my opinion, only Ororon and Citlali are very organic and they feel very fresh and full of life. Natlan lacks some interactions between characters, so maybe that's why Ororon and Citlali are so good.

I feel like theres that reason why we dont see a little boy playable model, all the childe characters we have playable are little girl models, i see this as a way to market towards creeps, yes there are creeps out there who like little boys but its quite strange we never had a playable child boy. This is the actual reason of why I have a problem with asian games in general. They generally don't think about audiences as a variety of people who share same interests but only a certain group of people that shares certain interests and traits of personality. And it might be profitable for them but that is very limiting for their creativity and the players options for a character. The same thing is happening in ZZZ, during the first release we got interesting male character designs: Lycaon, Ben, Billy Kid and Anthon. And yes there were still more female characters but the male characters attracted so much attention and they are some of the most popular characters in that game. But now we got more bland anime female characters and the only few male characters that we got in the new update are also bland as heck too. Especially Harumasa, gosh his design is so.... It just doesn't have any taste. The only exception is Lighter more or less.

Hoyoverse and other gacha game companies are playing safe and while it might be profitable now when you overuse the same formula all over again it just get tiring and as we saw with other companies you know that won't work in a few years or maybe months. Game developers need to challenge themselves and try to make at least something different. People love different things when done well, and that's why you need feedback from all your audience, not only the ones you want to pander. You know there are 2 new Gacha games releasing soon, Ananta and NTE, and yeah, they look cool but they feel like if they were spin-off or sequels of ZZZ not only how the characters look but also how the whole aesthetic is. They are not copying ZZZ since they were in development before ZZZ release, but you get what I mean. Playing safe for a long time will not end well because it's losing money over the same audience all over again. What if the audience changes their minds? What if there are not as much people that used to play these games as before? And what if they try to make a genuine feedback about the game and yet they don't accept it? Remember how we got 1600 primos for free at 5.0 because Hoyo had to revert a "fix" they did on Neuvilette that made him weaker and not able to do the "spin to win" anymore? They were certainly doing that to push sales for Mualani. I think this could have to do with the change on the devs leadership, with Da Wei taking over from Cai Haoyu. This brought many good things for gameplay, UI, general QoL, but maybe also did this to character design and writting.
I sincerely don't get how a game company refuses to acknowledge that the GAMEPLAY is a fundamental part for the sales related to a character. Some people pulled Kazuha because they liked the character since his model was leaked (me, hi). A lot of other people pulled for him because he's fun to play and because he's been the top tier support for years. Like, how can you NOT notice??

And the female audience are the most prolific content creators: nobody's got time to watch a YT video, but everyone has seen Genshin fanart and cosplays - those are mostly done by women. So they're alienating the most effective free ad makers they have....in order to make the game more popular? Wow.

It's also been obvious in the genshin community how characters like Childe, Scara, Xiao, Alhaitham, Neuvilette & Zhongli gets insanely popular. My guess is that they never intended to make things equal. They released a lot of male characters at the beginning to become mainstream, but I don’t think that was a long term goal. After all, they’re a group of otakus who have always liked the same type of anime girl. At this point players who enjoy to play with male characters have two options, quit the game, or accept the change and wait for the sporadic male character release. It’s kind of sad because Genshin had a lot of potential for uniqueness. I really like their male characters.
Mind you, 6/10 of the top selling characters of 2024 in JP were all men and tbe stats were likely similar in other regions too. Men DO sell well in genshin due to its mixed fanbase and non-gooner audience (or atleast not the majority). Hoyo really should be releasing more men.

I think that hoyo is going on a bad direction with the male 5 star situation, because it feels fo me that they want the game to be more played by people who only play with 1 hand. Lets hope they see this mistake and start relesing more males. At least kinich(the last 5 star male released) is really good and fun to play.

Yeah, as a woman I have zero issue pulling female characters. Especially if they're fun to play and have an appealing design. Would love to see more good male characters too though. But I also heard that Chinese weebs throw a massive fit over male characters being too handsome? That they don't make male characters flirtatious towards the _waifus_ because they can get really upset? Don't know how true that is but I've seen videos about it.
There was a girls front line I think? character that dared to talk to a male NPC and that raged the chinese fanbase. It was so massive that the game got review bombed and the devs had to change the npc into a female... Yeah its that bad...
This is why I didn't plat Genshin and Wuthering Wave anymore. Male characters deserve to get recognized. They usually release female because of se×ualize them, to get a lot of money from male players. What about female player who is straight or liking guys? Don't even get started with world design and storyline. How the hecc did Nation of War have Hotspring and the story is sooooooo boring for me.

It's funny that they think releasing a little bit of males will keep female players in the game. A bunch of us girls just fled to Honkai Star Rail instead because they are releasing way more guys and they have a good amount of screentime in the story too. Yeah, it's still the same company but at least we are supporting a different team.
I don't think HSR is doing any better in that department. Excluding the Trailblazers, it has 18/61 male character (out of 59 if you don't include upcoming 3.0 characters). It comes to about a cast of 30% male characters. In fact, it's actually worse than Genshin's current 37/90 (add +2 for upcoming Mavuika and Citlali). And for the curious, ZZZ's male roster sits at 7/28 currently. Though I wouldn't hold my breath yet since that game is only about 5 months old. The screen time of HSR males is definitely a lot better though. With Aventurine having his moment and Sunday ending up as the main antagonist of Pemacony alongside finally releasing as a playable character. Dan Heng and Welt being core members of the Astral Express also help with the male screen time side of things. Here's to hoping they don't drop that ball with Amphoreus, especially since one of the male characters looks to be a Kevin Expy, which people seem to be excited about (I don't know a lot about HI3 since I never played it).
@JAMllostthegame I havent played HI3 either and I dont think I want to 😅 To be honest, I am not really interested in characters with teenage guy models in Genshin other that maybe Xiao and Kazuha, so thats why I dont feel the disproportion as much in HSR. They only have Misha I think? Luka I think might still have adult model.
Its my own HC that they made HSR due to not being able to add playable male characters in HI3 lol, so I hold some hope that at least the writing for male characters in HSR should be good. Esp if they are expys. However, HSR male clothing designs is very conservative in comparison to their other games... lacking fanservice in that area.

Like Welt and Dan Heng are pretty much always involved (and Sunday will too, I hope) Sampo had a random cameo, Dr.Ratio involved in Penacony, Yanqing in recent Loufu quest/event + Luka, Argenti literally everywhere, etc. In Genshin I feel like theres a lot less of that, they would normally bring someone for like 3 lines and forget about them for years (Remember Keaya in the Danliefs Sumeru quest lol). We had Childe show up in other nations I guess and Itto, but that's about it. And as much as I love Itto, I'm sorry but all those events were just filler and not important at all.

The male banner do not sell that well at all. The only male banner in top 10 grossing are Ventis first banner and that is only because of launch. They do ok but to say they sell as good as the female banners are just wrong.

Nathan's lack of 5 star male is really disappointing. Xbalanque had great potential, I'm sure, a fiery pyro dragon sovereign character alongside Mavika. Male characters sell pretty well, too, and Genshin can craft excellent male characters, too, in terms of design, story, and gameplay. They're just too focused on females with lots of revealing skin when even star rail's female designs have more covered, majestic gowns and dresses. I hate this new Genshin, feels like cheap tact bait. Star rail even has awesome male characters that do just as well as their counterparts. Genshin, unfortunately, has let me down.
Star Rail also has a problem with female designs. I can say it... but not at the level of Genshin (Mavuika's design is the biggest disappointment I've ever had) but, in penacony at least the vast majority of male characters they released ended up being Meta, which in Genshin in recent times only happened with Kinich...

Hoyo needs to stop listening to the vocal minority no matter how unhinged they are. Genshin is a 'for everyone' game and that's why it was and is so successful. Part of the problem is that they keep making every male a DPS, and people who prefer female characters also complain about too many DPS. The player demographic is almost even, 48% female, 52% male. Women pull on everyone. Most of the guys pull on everyone depending on the character and design. They go majority female characters and Genshin is going to drop off hard.
@brightlight8852 90% of their revenue doesn't solely come from the players who want waifus only or prefer female characters. More of the CN playerbase likes both, and most of the more popular characters...are male. Da Wei on the other hand prefers waifus and openly said so. They're being taken to task by both CN female players and male players. More so female players because the drop in Genshin mobile revenue in CN matches up with Love and Deepspace revenue gains. They aren't shy about being Hoyo players tired of being starved. 35-90mil dollars is not a small chunk of change to lose to another game.
As a straight female player, I have one main desire: I want characters in Genshin Impact to have more depth and intrigue, similar to honkai Impact 3rd‘s Elysia, Kalpas, Raiden Mei, Aponia, Su and Kevin. Currently, I struggle to connect or feel engaged with any characters in Genshin, as they come across as rather shallow...
@zerotodona1495 I tried playing HSR when it first came out, but I lost interest after the Chinese region. However, I've heard about the Flame Chasers getting expies in the game, and the trailer was epic, so I'm considering giving it another chance.

@@eliseflowery i admit that Xianzhou Loufu is kinda mid in term of character. But don't just stop in Loufu, because after that is Penacony, which have the best character in term of writing (for my opinion), at first i thought Penacony was based on Elysian Realm, turns out i was wrong, Amphoreus is the one who took inspiration of Elysian Realm. And because HSR is bold enough to kill their actual character, i can feel that we will get same experience as Elysian Realm in Amphoreus.
I believe actually the "blame" can be attributed to the loud minority who would completely bash male characters for getting closer with some female characters in certain events. It's baffling. But I don't think they want to receive any more backlash. Think about it. Last time, Scaramouche/Wanderer got "close" to Nahida. Some folks in China literally started unaliving small cats that looked like scarameow and posted online about it in dark web forums or some BS like that. Or how there are [according to them] "no close interactions between traveler and the other female characters" and yet other male characters do have closer interactions [when they don't, they sound delusional] Or even hell, most recently, people once again bashed Wanderer for getting close to and having more "screen time" than say Navia or Nilou in the recent summer event! 💀 I believe that this is just hoyos' response to this kind of "extremist" backlash. It bloody sucks. But I don't want to necessarily 100% blame hoyo for that when there can definitely be other unconsidered variables involved and not mentioned. ETA: I don't even like Scaramouche/Wanderer [I find his ahh annoying asf] but if there are extremists like that, damn well I know most people want to comply or compromise before sh*t hits the fan even harder.

Actually releasing less male characters will make female players quit, I quit already and moved to WuWa but even there they started releasing less male characters so I'm also considering quitting this game. If I can't enjoy playing with characters that are visually appealing to me, then I will not play.

I recommend Ash Echoes. For now female characters can show interest in other male characters (as fangirls, but still), you have both male and female characters being written as characters rather than generic stereotypical fanservice, and, still for now, the devs promised to release more male characters in the future.

I don't play this game, so I can't really comment on the situation, but it kind of reminds me of what happens in light novels and even other web novels. They really make females a focus more than the males. If a guy has a harem, it's all girls. If a girl has a harem of guys, she'll ignore them and go for the girls. There are other examples, but as a straight chick, it's always frustrating. They always throw that crap in after the sample portion, too. Girls? I wanna see men! lol

I’m a female player, and Theres a whole stigma in gacha games to even have male characters, so that’s probably why. Although, that’s not true for genshin, as times have shown, genshin brings people who enjoy the male characters. So, this is entirely illogical. Genuinely baffling. In fact, from what I noticed I see more female genshin players then males, it’s probably not that big of a difference between ratios of male to female players. It’s not like people hate playing male characters, we know that.
Not hating playing as male characters does not apply for Asian male gamers. Almost every. single. asian. male. genshin players living in Asian country like Korea hates male characters lol I've seen some guy saying should he pull neuvillette or not cuz neuvi is a guy and he doesnt wanna pull for male character. it's soooo upsetting. i started playing the genshin for kaeya (even though he's a 4 star) and he's the character that kept me playing the game for four years and counting. then came more male characters like albedo, itto, baizhu, neuvilette, etc., all of which i love and are some of my fav characters, even though i do like the girls more. it's so peculiar why hoyoverse is doing this, especially since when they do release a 5 star male character, they're almost always well written and everyone eats them up. i mean, look at neuvilette! i've yet to see a person that hates neuvilette or doesn't appreciate some aspect of his lore, kit or design. i'm beginning to think hoyo are starting to lean more into fanservice than ever before with how they're releasing almost exclusively 5 star females now, because arguably a good chunk of the player base is basement-dwelling 'waifu collectors' that pay hoyo's electricity bills with how much they spend on female 5 stars. it's just really sad.
I honestly find this issue kinda sad, I started playing cause of Kaeya. My first ever five star was Childe. Sure, there's lots of females I also pulled for, but I quite literally just c6'd my Neuvillette on his rerun because of how much I love him and his character. Hell, one of my male friends asked me to help him build Ororon because he thought his tattoos are nice and he wants to play him. My play time in Genshin has been dropping with each patch because they just barely give us new male characters or reruns for them. I've regretted not pulling for Wriothesley ever since he came out cause I genuinely like him too :')
Where are some characters that didn´t rerun for over a year? Where are any new character models? Why are there motorcycles and a 8bit cannon? Their whole release policy is utterly fucked for a while now.

This might sound silly but as a male i like to see myself through the character, i like playing cool male characters and imagine them as being me inside the game but I can't do that with female characters no matter how cool they are i just can't relate to them and most of the time i only pull because of the meta (and sometimes the story)😅
Same man, Alhaitham is my favorite character in the game because he’s nerdy and buff which is just like me; the fact that I can’t see myself in a female character just makes me never want to pull for a female main dps

I'm so disappointed as a female player. Not necessarily because of the lack of males but because i know that they're going to start prioritizing male fan service over actual story and characterization. I've been a fan of genshin for awhile now and it actually makes me so sad.

most popular ships being mlm is js hoyo yaoibaiting and it's very much a tactic meant to keep the girlies interested. it's okay though, the game already has little to offer to straight female audience fanservice-wise, they gotta do what they gotta do 😭 but even their yaoi game has been weak since fontaine. afaik there's no big couple in natlan, neither yaoi nor yuri
As a bisexual, I mostly pull for male characters. I mean, I love girls but I hate how most of their stories are so... Bland. Some of the female characters feel like they are only there for fanservice. And that doesn't always apply to male characters (of course, there are exceptions). Personally, I only pull for characters I absolutely adore in terms of story and development
They also tend to have female characters that are amazing in the story but the moment they have their own sidequest they become “waifu #5” (like Nilou, my girl was done so dirty 😢)
On the other side, male characters that flirt with the traveller are treated with more depth than the female ones, like Lyney.
(warning: no offense to characters whom I can mention, I respect their fans. Be prepared)
That's why I didn't pull for female characters in Natlan(including Mavuika and Citlali, I skip them. However I hope their quests will be good). Cause they're... weakly written(okay, Chasca might be better, but she's not in my taste). I pulled for Kinich, unfortunately I knew about Ajaw more, BUT I found him interesting.
I've noticed it's rarely when female characters well written. For example, Tartaglia had one of amazing story quest, his character is bad and good at the same time, it's..grey, like people in general. It makes him realistic. Or Baizhu, I like his character and story, I REALLY enjoyed his quest(and wanna pull for him)
But what about most female characters? They're just...some of anime cliche? It's not bad, cliche can work, but...I can't say anything about Xilonen, seriously. Meanwhile about Arlecchino I can say way more because her character is interesting
In other words, I wanna many female characters having not one sided personality, but something.. deeper? I don't need something hard, I just wanna feel something for characters, emotions, how they behave situations, not just "she's hot lol". I wanna PERSONALITY, not another question after character story quest: "and that's what I'm getting my 120 gems for?"

Genshin is trying to attract more players so I think out of fandom popularity characters might be focused one more since they attract people. I think most people outside the genshin community know wanderer way more than Furina and Nahida. If you point at a picture of Wanderer many people will know him over Furina because he’s older (release wise) and has a possibly bigger fan base. Nahida isn’t that popular outside of genshin, I’ve seen more merch of Hu Tao and Klee than her

Slight correction about 404's info: it's not that they think male characters are making people quit/not join the game. It's that they pivoted to appeal to a HI3 audience (incels) as a reaction to the shrinkage in the gacha market. I guess they think that if they appeal heavily to the incels it will make up for the fewer new players by creating more whales.
I kind of wonder if Da Wei's increasing influence on Genshin led to this...but I dunno. It's happening in all their games. ZZZ needs no explanation, Genshin only having Kinich in 2024, HSR went from 6 > 4 > 3 limited men from 1.X to 3.X. Perhaps this is a company-wide shift. :/

I am more and more convinced that Sumeru and Fontaine were peak of the game. Natlan is... strange. The story, locations and music are good, but the design! Design - is the main problem with Natlan and its characters!

I'm seeing husbando enjoyers actually thinking about leaving, because they have too many pulls and no banners in Natlan that interest them yet. These leaks about the only confirmed upcoming male character being Ifa (4*) have caused the opposite reaction. Not to mention that Wriothesley holds the curse of being a man AND cryo so he hasn't had a rerun when almost everyone in Fontaine has, some even more than once. Some male 4* who are liked by female players have taken over a year to have reruns, like Kaveh and Heizou. idk what they're thinking, especially when their second biggest market, Japan, adores a lot of male Genshin characters (Kinich is really popular there because of his and Ajaw's VAs.) Even the Chinese incels' worst nightmare, Wanderer, keeps winning popularity polls in weibo.
Personally, despite liking male characters a lot more I pull for characters of all genders, but it's reached a point where I've been getting a lot of accidental 5*s this year trying to get the new boys because, except for Kinich, they've all been 4*! It's even more vile when you think about it because you're not guaranteed, so husbando collectors will end up pulling on a banner forever since they can't get even C0 Ororon. I got 3 early Chascas. While trying to pull Sethos, I got one Nahida and one Dehya. I know, my own fault for building pity, but this hasn't happened to me before this often.

I ABSOLUTELY agree about husbando enjoyers, since I myself have pulled weapon event FOR THE FIRST TIME recently, just because I don't know where else to spend my pulls. The only character I really want to pull is Cyno, but I have most of the other chracters I wanted. I really think that if no new 5* male characters appear, my plan is next:
1) Wait for Cyno
2) Pull for weapons
3) Pull for constellations
4) Pull for any male characters and avoid pulling for female characters on principle
Earlier I wouldn't spend any primogems on weapon or constellations bcs I thought I still have more nice guys to pull for, but THAT'S how bad the situations with guys is. That bad that recently I pulled my first 5* on weapon event, Neuvillette's weapon
@acheba_nitsa I'm actually a C2R1 Cyno main and his weapon is super worth it. If you're going next for him and you're also maining Neuvi, may I suggest trying to get Baizhu from the Liyue banner now if you don't have him already? He might disappear after 5.3 and he's pretty good in teams for both of them. I think he's a better investment for a future Cyno than his cons

It's so sad cause their so good at making both boy and girl characters, but their making less boys because they think their girl players aren't as important and they think most people only like characters of the opposite gender, but outside of the boys that only watch anime for the sexy girls that constantly have fanservice, the gender of the characters doesn't really matter if a character will be popular. As a lesbian myself i tend to actually prefer the boys in anime because the girls just aren't that well written but in genshin i love a lot of the girls and boys, i don't want genshin to turn into just another boring series that wants the money from boys that only want to sexualize the girls.

They have basically proven 404 right with the last live stream. In the silhouette teaser, everyone to the left of skirk is theorized to be a 4* (Iansan, Dahlia, Ifa) and everyone to the right of Skirk including Skirk herself would be 5*. They said so themselves they want to return to their roots, which is waifu games like HI3 and GGZ. Everyone else was just a nice bump of cash along the way to put Genshin into mainstream, but now that they don't need the publicity/growth anymore they are showing their 'true' colors.
Oh I also forgot their "we only listen to the real travelers" comment. It's pretty clear they think male Otaku are the real travelers and female players, "normies" and gays are not. This all despite the fact that Genshin only reached its current levels of popularity because of these players.
Honestly no one is asking for men on waifu games like Nikke and AL, but a lot of people are unhappy with this rug pull in Genshin because they literally set the expectations themselves from 1.0

@@ErisNoir Tbh I still enjoyed the game in Fontaine and probably would've also defended them back then. But you can feel the shift towards the end of Fontaine/4.8 Summer and then more so as we go into Natlan. It's not just the ratio of characters either, its the world immersion, character designs, and impact to the story that comes along with the further skewed ratios.
I'm also not a fan of the Nightsoul mechanic and how its more impactful to the meta than pneuma-ousia was, not even touching on powercreep and how crazy some constellations like Xilonen's are. I genuinely don't want to pull for that many Natlan characters, but skipping them inconveniences me not just in abyss but also overworld exploration becomes more cumbersome if you're a "have-not" (on my account every region 100% except for Natlan atm)
Back in Fontaine if someone had told me that they wanted to scale down male characters further I would've said "Nah, this is probably the sweet spot between appeasing the CN ifmalenoplay players but also not making the game a generic waifu gacha either, they won't change the formula too dramatically" but after the change over from Cai Haoyu to Da Wei somehow the situation has further degraded beyond my expectations...

Also people don't just pull for characters that they're atracted to, there's a bunch of reasons for liking a character, i don't fell attracted to any characters so i mainly pull for the ones i like story-wise or for gameplay. If they think male characters don't sell enough (which is factualy not true but whatever), they should put more effort in their story and kit, literally every archon quest the characters with the most screentime are always women, and even as a woman myself, it just feels weird, it would be understandable if Teyvat was just lacking on male population, but why are the men so absent, i work in a female-dominated field and the feeling is completely different, because the few men that are there actually do something. And it feels like sometimes a male character that is important to the main story ends up being a 4 star (Kaeya, Thoma, Ororon), like can't Hoyo just give both genders the same treatment?

Take example for Diluc, in lore, he was said to be able to beat an army of Fatui, The Harbringer even calling him a real threat. In reality he was getting powercreep by Hu Tao, who canonically is the weakest character in story.

I think doing this is genshin or HSR is genuinely a horrible idea. Like i can understand HI3 not having males. That's how the game started, That's how it was for years, and even if i wish i could play as Kevin or Otto, i won't judge. Same thing for ZZZ. The game has the coolest and most unique looking male characters in any hoyo game imo, but the target audience for the game has been very clear to everyone from before it even released. It's a combat game with a lot of fanservice MOSTLY aimed at men. So i expect them to only drop 2 or 3 males per version and won't really cry about it. On the other hand both Genshin and HSR have a waaay bigger female audience. And a more even ratio of male/female characters. Changing this is basically betraying your core audience. This is a dumb move clearly.

damn... it hurts to go from being absolutely in love with a game and playing it for hours every day for years to hating almost every single decision thats being made for it now. I think that all comution in China to make Ororon a 5 star should have been enough proof that male characters are profitable. So I really don't understand Genshin decision on that. Maybe in the next region they will take that feedback, but we know that Genshin normally takes 4 years to understand some feedback... so we wait...

One of Genshin Impact's greatest advertisements that successfully pulled so many people into the game wasn't even done by Mihoyo itself, but instead a Kaeya Alberich edit by a fan. To this day, the video is known as "that one Kaeya edit" and it keeps getting views. If Mihoyo wants popularity, they should move according to the preferences of the general audience with the ability to get into trends and make content for the game, not some degenerate guys who can't even realize forced fanservice. The path they are taking will only provide short-term success, but Gacha games depend heavily on popularity and the support they get from the gamers. They are sacrificing what made Genshin survive for years.

really? zzz is my first hoyo game so i may be completely wrong here. i'm a male liker so it might just be because i'm not paying much attention, but while yeah there are some big chests, nicole, burnice and the one cop character feel like the only ones that are pronounced enough to be pandering. (i think nicole is debatable because her design communicates about her character traits, as opposed to fanservice for the sake of it)

The more female characters they release, the less unique and interesting each female character becomes (and vice-versa). There are only so many different backstories and personalities that Hoyo can innovate before they have to start cannibalizing previous characters' identities in order to continue releasing new characters. I main Clorinde, but would fork over all my primo savings for a tall male character in heavy plate armor.
+1. Sadly, sometimes the quality just drops because how much female characters they release. Many female characters has the same personality and traits, sometimes it's just a generic waifu and that's it. I think that Sumeru was very good in terms of female characters and how everyone had such a different personality (males too) from each other. Natlan feels a little bland :(( Mualani being the generic bubbly and happy waifu, literally Yoimiya v2 for example. In my opinion, only Ororon and Citlali are very organic and they feel very fresh and full of life. Natlan lacks some interactions between characters, so maybe that's why Ororon and Citlali are so good.

I feel like theres that reason why we dont see a little boy playable model, all the childe characters we have playable are little girl models, i see this as a way to market towards creeps, yes there are creeps out there who like little boys but its quite strange we never had a playable child boy. This is the actual reason of why I have a problem with asian games in general. They generally don't think about audiences as a variety of people who share same interests but only a certain group of people that shares certain interests and traits of personality. And it might be profitable for them but that is very limiting for their creativity and the players options for a character. The same thing is happening in ZZZ, during the first release we got interesting male character designs: Lycaon, Ben, Billy Kid and Anthon. And yes there were still more female characters but the male characters attracted so much attention and they are some of the most popular characters in that game. But now we got more bland anime female characters and the only few male characters that we got in the new update are also bland as heck too. Especially Harumasa, gosh his design is so.... It just doesn't have any taste. The only exception is Lighter more or less.

Hoyoverse and other gacha game companies are playing safe and while it might be profitable now when you overuse the same formula all over again it just get tiring and as we saw with other companies you know that won't work in a few years or maybe months. Game developers need to challenge themselves and try to make at least something different. People love different things when done well, and that's why you need feedback from all your audience, not only the ones you want to pander. You know there are 2 new Gacha games releasing soon, Ananta and NTE, and yeah, they look cool but they feel like if they were spin-off or sequels of ZZZ not only how the characters look but also how the whole aesthetic is. They are not copying ZZZ since they were in development before ZZZ release, but you get what I mean. Playing safe for a long time will not end well because it's losing money over the same audience all over again. What if the audience changes their minds? What if there are not as much people that used to play these games as before? And what if they try to make a genuine feedback about the game and yet they don't accept it? Remember how we got 1600 primos for free at 5.0 because Hoyo had to revert a "fix" they did on Neuvilette that made him weaker and not able to do the "spin to win" anymore? They were certainly doing that to push sales for Mualani.
I think this could have to do with the change on the devs leadership, with Da Wei taking over from Cai Haoyu. This brought many good things for gameplay, UI, general QoL, but maybe also did this to character design and writting.
This is exactly what happened. Da Wei works on honkai titles and this, prefers females only. Which is irritating..

Also the ratio of male to female players is not that skewed, it's 55/45, I'd say Genshin probably has the most female players than any other game (aside from the ones that are specifically catered to women). And the female audience are the most prolific content creators: nobody's got time to watch a YT video, but everyone has seen Genshin fanart and cosplays - those are mostly done by women. My guess is that they never intended to make things equal. They released a lot of male characters at the beginning to become mainstream, but I don’t think that was a long term goal. After all, they’re a group of otakus who have always liked the same type of anime girl.
At this point players who enjoy to play with male characters have two options, quit the game, or accept the change and wait for the sporadic male character release.
It’s kind of sad because Genshin had a lot of potential for uniqueness. I really like their male characters.

It's funny that they think releasing a little bit of males will keep female players in the game. A bunch of us girls just fled to Honkai Star Rail instead because they are releasing way more guys and they have a good amount of screentime in the story too. Yeah, it's still the same company but at least we are supporting a different team.
I don't think HSR is doing any better in that department. Excluding the Trailblazers, it has 18/61 male character (out of 59 if you don't include upcoming 3.0 characters). It comes to about a cast of 30% male characters. In fact, it's actually worse than Genshin's current 37/90 (add +2 for upcoming Mavuika and Citlali). And for the curious, ZZZ's male roster sits at 7/28 currently. Though I wouldn't hold my breath yet since that game is only about 5 months old.
The screen time of HSR males is definitely a lot better though. With Aventurine having his moment and Sunday ending up as the main antagonist of Pemacony alongside finally releasing as a playable character. Dan Heng and Welt being core members of the Astral Express also help with the male screen time side of things. Here's to hoping they don't drop that ball with Amphoreus, especially since one of the male characters looks to be a Kevin Expy, which people seem to be excited about (I don't know a lot about HI3 since I never played it).
@JAMllostthegame I havent played HI3 either and I dont think I want to 😅 To be honest, I am not really interested in characters with teenage guy models in Genshin other that maybe Xiao and Kazuha, so thats why I dont feel the disproportion as much in HSR. They only have Misha I think? Luka I think might still have adult model.

Its my own HC that they made HSR due to not being able to add playable male characters in HI3 lol, so I hold some hope that at least the writing for male characters in HSR should be good. See, even though like ppl said in the comments HSR still has less male characters, they at least bring back old ones for the story... Like Welt and Dan Heng are pretty much always involved (and Sunday will too, I hope) Sampo had a random cameo, Dr.Ratio involved in Penacony, Yanqing in recent Loufu quest/event + Luka, Argenti literally everywhere, etc.
In Genshin I feel like theres a lot less of that, they would normally bring someone for like 3 lines and forget about them for years (Remember Keaya in the Danliefs Sumeru quest lol). We had Childe show up in other nations I guess and Itto, but that's about it. And as much as I love Itto, I'm sorry but all those events were just filler and not important at all.

The male banner do not sell that well at all. The only male banner in top 10 grossing are Ventis first banner and that is only because of launch. They do ok but to say they sell as good as the female banners are just wrong.

Nathan's lack of 5 star male is really disappointing. Xbalanque had great potential, I'm sure, a fiery pyro dragon sovereign character alongside Mavika. Male characters sell pretty well, too, and Genshin can craft excellent male characters, too, in terms of design, story, and gameplay. They're just too focused on females with lots of revealing skin when even star rail's female designs have more covered, majestic gowns and dresses. I hate this new Genshin, feels like cheap tact bait. Star rail even has awesome male characters that do just as well as their counterparts. Genshin, unfortunately, has let me down.
Star Rail also has a problem with female designs. I can say it... but not at the level of Genshin (Mavuika's design is the biggest disappointment I've ever had) but, in penacony at least the vast majority of male characters they released ended up being Meta, which in Genshin in recent times only happened with Kinich...

@@-mika18- Guys i'm writing this to every comment i can. We can actually make Hoyo understand we want more males by directly writing to them through the "feedback" section in the game's menu. I've seen players and Hoyocreators doing this also, and the more we are, the more attention we can get. Let's raise our voices! Please just give it a try

Hoyo needs to stop listening to the vocal minority no matter how unhinged they are. Genshin is a 'for everyone' game and that's why it was and is so successful.
Part of the problem is that they keep making every male a DPS, and people who prefer female characters also complain about too many DPS. The player demographic is almost even, 48% female, 52% male. Women pull on everyone. Most of the guys pull on everyone depending on the character and design. They go majority female characters and Genshin is going to drop off hard.
You can't call the group that gives them 90% of their revenue, a vocal minority.
@brightlight8852 90% of their revenue doesn't solely come from the players who want waifus only or prefer female characters. More of the CN playerbase likes both, and most of the more popular characters...are male. Da Wei on the other hand prefers waifus and openly said so. They're being taken to task by both CN female players and male players. More so female players because the drop in Genshin mobile revenue in CN matches up with Love and Deepspace revenue gains. They aren't shy about being Hoyo players tired of being starved. 35-90mil dollars is not a small chunk of change to lose to another game.
As a straight female player, I have one main desire: I want characters in Genshin Impact to have more depth and intrigue, similar to honkai Impact 3rd‘s Elysia, Kalpas, Raiden Mei, Aponia, Su and Kevin. Currently, I struggle to connect or feel engaged with any characters in Genshin, as they come across as rather shallow...
Have you tried star rail? The guys get time to shine in that.
@zerotodona1495 I tried playing HSR when it first came out, but I lost interest after the Chinese region. However, I've heard about the Flame Chasers getting expies in the game, and the trailer was epic, so I'm considering giving it another chance.

@@eliseflowery penacony is really good!! Most players think that aventurine's story quest was AMAZING and by far my personal favorite. Also sunday's was really great but very short
@@eliseflowery i admit that Xianzhou Loufu is kinda mid in term of character. But don't just stop in Loufu, because after that is Penacony, which have the best character in term of writing (for my opinion), at first i thought Penacony was based on Elysian Realm, turns out i was wrong, Amphoreus is the one who took inspiration of Elysian Realm. And because HSR is bold enough to kill their actual character, i can feel that we will get same experience as Elysian Realm in Amphoreus.
I believe actually the "blame" can be attributed to the loud minority who would completely bash male characters for getting closer with some female characters in certain events.
It's baffling. But I don't think they want to receive any more backlash.
Think about it.
Last time, Scaramouche/Wanderer got "close" to Nahida. Some folks in China literally started unaliving small cats that looked like scarameow and posted online about it in dark web forums or some BS like that.
Or how there are [according to them] "no close interactions between traveler and the other female characters" and yet other male characters do have closer interactions [when they don't, they sound delusional]
Or even hell, most recently, people once again bashed Wanderer for getting close to and having more "screen time" than say Navia or Nilou in the recent summer event! 💀
I believe that this is just hoyos' response to this kind of "extremist" backlash. It bloody sucks. But I don't want to necessarily 100% blame hoyo for that when there can definitely be other unconsidered variables involved and not mentioned.
ETA: I don't even like Scaramouche/Wanderer [I find his ahh annoying asf] but if there are extremists like that, damn well I know most people want to comply or compromise before sh*t hits the fan even harder.
Although if anything, pandering to such folks will only empower those psychopaths and invite more of them to join/ normalize deranged behaviors 🕴 it's fucked up from hoyoverse's side too
the sad thing is that you’re right. it’s understandable why they would cater to that audience more, in a vain attempt to “receive less backlash”. if only they were aware by them giving that extremist audience more power, they will only have more consequences to face in the future. it’s practically no longer hoyo’s game if they’re going to let THAT audience take the wheel and continue shaping it to their liking.
Actually releasing less male characters will make female players quit, I quit already and moved to WuWa but even there they started releasing less male characters so I'm also considering quitting this game. If I can't enjoy playing with characters that are visually appealing to me, then I will not play.

I recommend Ash Echoes. For now female characters can show interest in other male characters (as fangirls, but still), you have both male and female characters being written as characters rather than generic stereotypical fanservice, and, still for now, the devs promised to release more male characters in the future.

as a husbando lover and a girl who feels strongly about these topics, it lowkey pisses me off not gonna lie. genshin's fanservice was not quite as outrageous as other gacha games sometimes were, which is why i stuck to it for a long time because i could collect my husbandos but the sexualisation of women is just...neverending rn. i mean we all saw this coming because they just wanna make as much profit as possible and the fandom consists of 80% gooners, but still? i almost completely lost interest in this game when practically no other male characters were released after neuvi and wrio. i guess equality was never a possibility lol (in this context, i mean equal fanservice of both genders in the game)

I don't play this game, so I can't really comment on the situation, but it kind of reminds me of what happens in light novels and even other web novels. They really make females a focus more than the males. If a guy has a harem, it's all girls. If a girl has a harem of guys, she'll ignore them and go for the girls. There are other examples, but as a straight chick, it's always frustrating. They always throw that crap in after the sample portion, too. Girls? I wanna see men! lol
In china, those players will go crazy if male characters added too much they will go crazy and even send assassins to hoyo devs. Example: Wanderer got a lot hates in china and they could report to their government, hi3 apho is also example for making male chars

I’m a female player, and Theres a whole stigma in gacha games to even have male characters, so that’s probably why. Although, that’s not true for genshin, as times have shown, genshin brings people who enjoy the male characters. So, this is entirely illogical. Genuinely baffling. In fact, from what I noticed I see more female genshin players then males, it’s probably not that big of a difference between ratios of male to female players. It’s not like people hate playing male characters, we know that.
Not hating playing as male characters does not apply for Asian male gamers. Almost every. single. asian. male. genshin players living in Asian country like Korea hates male characters lol I've seen some guy saying should he pull neuvillette or not cuz neuvi is a guy and he doesnt wanna pull for male character. They also call this game as "(diseases that they think gay people gets) game", cuz there are plenty of good looking or pretty guy characters and that makes them uncomfortable cuz it is sexualizing men lol its funny cuz the sexualization on female characters in genshin is just insane

it's soooo upsetting. i started playing the genshin for kaeya (even though he's a 4 star) and he's the character that kept me playing the game for four years and counting. then came more male characters like albedo, itto, baizhu, neuvilette, etc., all of which i love and are some of my fav characters, even though i do like the girls more. it's so peculiar why hoyoverse is doing this, especially since when they do release a 5 star male character, they're almost always well written and everyone eats them up. i mean, look at neuvilette! i've yet to see a person that hates neuvilette or doesn't appreciate some aspect of his lore, kit or design. i'm beginning to think hoyo are starting to lean more into fanservice than ever before with how they're releasing almost exclusively 5 star females now, because arguably a good chunk of the player base is basement-dwelling 'waifu collectors' that pay hoyo's electricity bills with how much they spend on female 5 stars. it's just really sad.
I honestly find this issue kinda sad, I started playing cause of Kaeya. My first ever five star was Childe. Sure, there's lots of females I also pulled for, but I quite literally just c6'd my Neuvillette on his rerun because of how much I love him and his character. Hell, one of my male friends asked me to help him build Ororon because he thought his tattoos are nice and he wants to play him. My play time in Genshin has been dropping with each patch because they just barely give us new male characters or reruns for them. I've regretted not pulling for Wriothesley ever since he came out cause I genuinely like him too :')

This might sound silly but as a male i like to see myself through the character, i like playing cool male characters and imagine them as being me inside the game but I can't do that with female characters no matter how cool they are i just can't relate to them and most of the time i only pull because of the meta (and sometimes the story)😅
Same man, Alhaitham is my favorite character in the game because he’s nerdy and buff which is just like me; the fact that I can’t see myself in a female character just makes me never want to pull for a female main dps
