I’m an outbound mechanic and was asked to set up repairing outboards in the South Pacific for resorts. All these resorts tried to save money but the result was outboard graveyards and the only outboard that survived was Yamaha! It’s pretty impressive to see a big Fijian pull starting with a rope on a 250!!! The worst outboard was Mercury by far. I knew an old fisherman from Suva that had 21000 hours on an oil injected Yamaha 2 stoke and although I’m back in Australia, I think it’s still going strong!
Haha, yeah I have family in Fiji and we are there quite often so I can 100% agree that all I ever see still running there is Yamaha's of just about any vintage!
I spent decades saltwater fishing with my uncle and he ran the same late 70's two stroke Johnson the entire time...he's gone now and so is Johnson...both make me incredibly sad. I still see my uncles old boat on the water, a painter friend of my uncle ended up with it a few years back, and the same Johnson was still going strong when I last saw the boat a couple years back. I myself now fish almost exclusively fresh water and have a 15 year old Mercury that, knock on wood, is still running strong. I will likely re-power in the next couple years and have my eye on Suzuki...their latest outboards seem to be very popular and dealers are starting to pop up around where I live.
Yeah man agree have ran so many if those old 2 strokes. And you can't go wrong with a Suzuki either. I think they can all be pretty good if looked after
Great comparison between brands, good info to know before repowering. For the small capacity outboards, namely 40hp, what brand would you recommend? I would think weight would be most important in this size. Thank you
Great informative video well done. Just wanted to mention about honda. As far as research and development. Honda built there V6 for a multi million sales car market. There research and development on that motor would have been massive to make a bullet proof long lasting, low maintenance car engine. Completely understand that Honda marine has not tried to reinvent an engine that had been completely sold in the car market and can be well used in the marine market as well. Really enjoyed watching your video. Just thought it was important to maybe mention that Honda well and truly have engineered the V6 for a reliable solid long lasting engine in cars and adapted it to outboard engines. Thanks Damien
I have honda Bf 250 and mercury verado 250 v6 supercharge model i really enjoy both outboard engine....i totally agree with your honest opinion mercury really made me headache haha....But still i really enjoy my first fishing boat which pair with 2stroke yamaha 60hp.😂 i love the old school Rev sound.
I’ll send you a photo of the outboard graveyards in the pacific - 90% Mercury - there was a joke about them but I can’t post that! It involved work ethic and colour. Also remember that there was no sales agents for Suzuki or Honda.
Great info mate! Considering switching to Suzuki from Yamaha myself for my next boat, so good to hear your thoughts on the major brands!! Will see though, have had no issues with the Yamaha!
Yeah no worries. I keep coming back to the Suzuki's myself. But the new Mercs over 200hp are tempting. Ultimately, exact specs, warranty and proximity to good dealers are important factors to also consider.
Very interesting reviews thanks! But - and maybe it’s changed since your review but re. Honda weight… The weight comparisons are a bit off for me. The Df200 is lighter than the BF200 by 70lbs - TRUE but the BF is a V6 and the DF is an inline 4 - so no surprise there!! BUT when you compare the V6s in Honda and Suzuki in 225 + the Suzuki seems to be heavier!
Recently I bought a Suziki 140 hp, before buying it I heard the reviews and I hear about the 6-year warranty however I live in Puerto Rico and here the warranty that you give me is only 3 years. Clearly I am communicating with the company Suzuki directly, if anyone knows the reason can tell me.
I think the plus 3 years is offered only in certain countries and it's not by Suzuki global, but the Suzuki wholesaler of that country. That's my understanding anyway....
Hey I honestly can't remember the exact one, if it wasn't mentioned on video or comments. Peter bobcat is the guy you want to talk to about proper set up. Prop, engine height etc.
Thanks for the info , i am considering repowering a older 530 Haines with a new 115. Wondering if you have any thoughts on the new Tohatsu I have a 1989 Yamaha 2 stroke on at the moment which has been a wonderful motor and still going well but my mechanic has been talking up the Tohatsu, but he is a Tohatsu dealer. October 23 thanks
I am looking at a second hand boat and it has a suzuki df140 2017. When I checked the gauge the operating hours is less than the trip hours (79 vs 84). What could be the explanation? Thanks!
@@BaitBallin I posted this question on a FB group and one person replied said quote "The total hours are the total hours - they are only accumulated when the engine is running. The trip hours accumulate even when the key is left on but the engine might not be running. Hope this helps??"
@@BaitBallin like always much appreciated mate! I am new to this game and I watched your channel for more than a year and watched almost all of your episodes. Your channel is very important like me. I am sure likewise for other viewers. This is very niche stuff you are doing. Thanks!
I used this 3 sylindred 526 ccm Tohatsu for 12 years a four stroke injection, that where a wery good engine, out year round here in Norway and reliable, but no i have this 9,8 on a 10 feet Pioner PE plastic outside my door because must have a light boat and engine to reach some islands through a channel. That little engine is impressive good but old teck inside , carburator, but that dont bother me, as long as clean fuel and oil, it goes and goes and already ab 160 hours since 2021 when new.@@BaitBallin

The new Merc V6 + V8s are game changers, extremely popular
Agree
Haha, happy to hear an honest opinion for Mercury, lowest resale value. 100% agree, the most unreliable engines ever created

No worries thanks man I didn't know that!!!
I have 2006 Honda 225 very smooth and quiet.
Thank you! Never owned anything but Evinrude 2 strokes from back in the day. I am considering a repower to Suzuki and that brought me here.
Yeah, as a long dfi fan....once you change you will literally never go back and the Suzuki's are a Nice Choice.

Well said! Yep I'm going Yamaha next. Expensive but rock solid reliable
Just one thing with Mercury, you better make sure you have 3-4 of them minimum, they are prone to breakdown LOL
Well yeah, I don't mind the new V8s etc but you won't see me buying one personally.
Florida haulovers are 80% Mercury and the Mercury 450 Racing is very popular despite the owner not racing.
Yeah I do love the new Merc V8s. Might have to get one on next boat. But in my size range would be 300hp max

Yeah my point was U need to carefully check every model. Some are ok, some are super heavy for their HP rating. Both those 225s are heavy.
Thank You great review
I prefer the short version on Facebook hahah
Good job 👍
Yeah more accurate also!

Yamaha all day
Absolutely
Mercs in my area, north east US are the same price as all the rest
Great review, what 4blade pro did you get for your DF200?

Can't say I've heard a bad thing about them. Just make sure there is a decent warranty. I'd be wanting 5 years min
Had to laugh with the v8 chat. Blows my mind why people want that noise. I’m more impressed when you can’t tell if the engines on or off
Yes me also! Pro xs is absolutely not for me
My first boat had a Etec on it and it wasnt much good thirsty and noisy so any 4 stroke would be better than a Etec.
Yeah if you think etec was noisy, mate the optimax bloody almost burst your ears!
@@BaitBallin i defiantly dont agree. optimax engines are up there with the best. fuel consumption and power is unreal.
Depends which model....and much noisier than etec for sure.

Honestly have no idea! I'm stumped. Either way hours are low so should be good to go

I went on the Suzuki Australian website to see if I can get a contact. There was none. Strange! The global website has a contact.

What are your thoughts on tohatsu 2 stroke?
The DFI Tohatsus are under rated and were basict very similar the optimax. Limited HP range didn't help them.... But for a cheap engine, why not

Ciao sono fantinelli Stefano mi avevo comprato barca è avevo anche un motore mello ahanno portato via
Yamaha is expensive because they are the best 😂
Yeah I've got one on the way shortly
@@BaitBallin l just put a 250 sho on my 7 metre ally fishing and diving boat and the performance and fuel economy is awesome 👍
Get a 115 mercury you won't be sorry

Well then they are a smart bunch!
