Thanks for this. I have trouble breathing through my nose even when not in water and I feel much more comfortable exhaling through my mouth. Its good to know that this is an acceptable way of breathing when swimming as all other videos I watched always advocated exhaling through the nose.

BAHAHAHAH, Jan I love you. You have trouble breathing through your nose when your not in the water, LOL. I feel your pain on underwater not trying to breathe through your nose. It's hard. Finally, someone making some sense... this guy in video accepts and teaches an alternative helpful way which I haven't tried though. I've seen some videos where kids have their mouths open smiling and all underwater... how are they still living lol like seriously. The swimming breathing concept is no joke...

I have septum deviation so I can exhale only on one nostril which is a problem when swimming so I need to learn how to properly exhale on mouth

0:35 Bad argument! :) The volume of expelled air doesn't depend so much on the opening, but on the chest muscles plus the diaphragm. Actually, they determine the exhaling speed.

personally, I think the concept of breathing out through the nose is (in most cases for the average person learning swimming to get fit not racing/competing) highly overrated. The average non-swim background person has much better control of their lungs through their mouth rather than the nose, and forcing out only thought the nose can lead to panic and make it hard for someone to find a rhythm. The "drag" created by breathing out form the mouth is MINIMAL, especially if you arent competing
