Holy shit...... I saw them in 1989 & and 1991 with this line-up. Memorial times, the best decade of death metal in the Netherlands. The best music in the 80's & 90's.
The best of the best.... Best album, dynamics, classical, technical, complex, sharp, aggressive, brutal but meticulously fine at the same time. Well produced within the analogical limitations of that era. Besides a pioneer true death stylish metal album in Europe
The 80s thrash was the best ever man.. I miss those days so much.. the best bands came out of the 80s imo.. pestilence, kreator, destruction, dark angel, slayer, death, king diamond, s.o.d, exodus, venom, Celtic frost, overkill, megadeth, anthrax, nuclear assault, Laaz rockit, armored saint, forced entry, forbidden, wrath, testament, Midas touch and Sodom were just a few of the bands that made alot of great memories for me as a young metal head back in the 80s.. I fuckin miss that shit man.. thanks for sharing this video.. it brought back alot of great memories for me.. take care.. Cheers from Cincinnati Ohio USA..
bobby spiess That's because they never wanted to sound like that era anymore. I praise technicallity over brutallity just for the sake of being brutal, it's an equilibrium between musicality and brutallity and I strongly believe Pestilence is one of the few bands that achieve this equilibrium. I love all of their eras.
Adrián Monge I can understand your point of view, although even "malleus..." shows technical finesse in many moments too, not only brutality. However, this album was ground-breaking .
I still have this album on vinyl and I think I need to bust it out again, because it's been a fat minute since I last listened to it. Marco was a fantastic drummer and this was just a taster of what was to come with the devastating follow up, "Consuming Impulse" (which is one of my absolute favorite DM albums). Martin's vocals were good here, but again, on the follow up? That amazing guttural howl he unleashed made this sound tame in comparison. For me, "Malleus Maleficarum" and "Consuming Impulse" are the best albums Pestilence made.
I read somewhere that Van Drunen lowered his vocals on Consuming Impulse because the screaming and shouting apparently gave him headaches, and the guttural style was easier to pull off live. Either way it's a killer transition.
I love the death metal of the late 80s, how it's simple and basically hard thrash played in a minor scale, and a touch faster than the thrash music of the time is how the death metal of today started, It might be a simple song but it is a brilliant song none the less.
While what you say is partly true about some early dm stuff, this shit here is not simple at all, that was pretty cutting edge and precise at the time.
The fast and annunciated vocals lends more force in this album than on consuming, it was a defining feature of the band up until that point. The slowed and raspy sounds more of a decaying process, but we came for the aggression when thrash and death metal were emerging... an edge frustratingly taken away thereafter until Possessed re-emerged in 2019
I think Van Drunen left in 91 or 92. His voice is one of the death metal greats. Pure anguish. Check out his next band, Asphyx, if you haven't already. Pretty awesome.
Sound off old school Thrash Metal Heads! I saw Pestilence in 1990 on the Death, Pestilence, Carcass tour! Still have the flyer and ticket stub. Who else was there?
Houston Texas, a riot broke out after Death’s Chuck walked off stage after only 2 songs in. Some one through water on him. Quite a few people went to jail that night, I made it out through the fire escape. Ha! Pestilence and Carcass kicked ass.
Playback, but nice to see them in their youth. This song was part of a compilation “Stars on Thrash”, that’s how I came to know Van Drounen’s Pestilence.
My 1st exposure to Pestilence , some guy made me this grainy copy of some Metal videos in the 80s, this was already there , never looked back ... Voivod´s " Ripping headaches " too . That VHS tape introduced me to so much great stuff . In hindsight it is odd we labeled this Thrash ... well , wasn´t until " Scream Bloody Gore " that the label " Death Metal " begun getting tossed about .
This is my fave Pestilence record...All out ballsy thrash with VanDuren on vocals! Great riffs, cool production!,
Van Drunen
Holy shit...... I saw them in 1989 & and 1991 with this line-up. Memorial times, the best decade of death metal in the Netherlands.
The best music in the 80's & 90's.
That's the original guitar player Randy Meinhard (on the right), so you couldn't of seen this line-up in 89 or 91 :)
@@jasonsolomon4745 yes there s Randy Meinhard here
Lucky bastard!!!
Wasn't Van Drunen already in Asphyx by 1991?
I discovered them after Mameli had taken over vocals, which was cool, but this is clearly the best version of Pestilence.
I wish that I had heard of pestilence back in the 80's, that was awesome.
The best of the best.... Best album, dynamics, classical, technical, complex, sharp, aggressive, brutal but meticulously fine at the same time. Well produced within the analogical limitations of that era. Besides a pioneer true death stylish metal album in Europe

I listened to all those bands back in the 80's as well and I miss those days.......
And Metallica that’s #1 don’t forget that

Classic shit. Love old Pestilence. 1st 3 albums are all great. Very underrated and had their own sound.
For me they got it all right on this track, great vocal style in particular.
Van Drunen rulez!
For me, Pestilence never reached the same intensity, after Van Drunen left. AND: the production maaan... :D
