  • The Company of the WEEK is CRST Trucking for the way they treat new drivers to the industry. Having people sign a non-compete? That's ridiculous and in my opinion unenforceable. Barracks with 3 to a room? Truckers should expect better. CRST Transportation turns off the TVs at 11pm! What are we, 9 years old? Detention pay at $40 after 48 hours? Holy crap. Also, CRST is another company that wouldn't tell me the complete story. Just that is suspicious. Truck drivers should get their questions answered by the recruiter. I need to know about the medical in advance and how much it costs. Just another predatory company new drivers should be wary of. Any place that won't answer your questions is a big problem.

    When I first started looking for a company to work for... CRST was the 3rd consideration and when I spoke with the recruiter, she asked if I would like to get started filling out the application. I said I was still doing research and that I would let her know. She told me Not to do too much research or I will end up Not wanting to drive... Geez... I wonder WHY???

      Agree with BigE. I stumbled a crossed your videos by accident while watching other videos. You didn't come up in a search. I went through and watched most of your videos last night and gave you a thumbs up on all of the ones I watched. From what I understand the more thumbs up you get the more likely you will show up in a search. What you say not only makes a lot of seance, it echoes what I have come a crossed so far while looking for a company I want to drive for. Some of the companies I talked to have crazy requirements and/or refuse to answer questions or put anything in writing.

    I went to crst years ago. Those crooks wanted me to drive a rental car that they were paying for from the home terminal to California to pick up an abandoned truck.... Here's the kicker, FOR FREE!!!! They said thats the only way to get in your truck. I played along with it and got the rental car and took my black tail HOME. LOL that company should be shut down by the government.

      I just finished my 28 days and this guy is not 100% accurate. I don’t know when he did this review video but all new students as of August we were getting 110$ a week while in school so that comment he made about us not getting paid is false because I personally did get paid and so did the guys at the school.
      The only issue I have is benefits I was told I was going to get for being in the apprenticeship program and haven’t got yet and I don’t like how the recruiters get ghost on you after you are hired.

    I went thru their program! safety record is 7 people dead, 70 towed accidents, 190 police called accidents in one year. my partner wrecked the truck put me in hospital with serious injuries. CRST had me kicked out of emergency room left me on the side of a rural country hiway. refused to give me ANY medical care. had broken back in 3 places, 4 broken ribs, knee injuries and bleeding. It got uglier, their doctors told me there was nothing wrong and I should go back to work! They have multiple lawsuits against them. They retaliate against any one who complains. My take home pay for 168 hours a week was $238 a lot of people made less

    I'm paying out of pocket for training locally because I don't want to be financially beholding to any company I go to. CRST was one of the first places I scratched of my list. The no compete was the biggest thing, They also told me if I left within a year I would still owe them $6K even though I paid for my own training and would have a CDL - A when I showed up. I agree, CRST is a crap company. Crooked as well..

    • @nick22611
      @nick22611 5 лет назад +1

      I got a fair deal. This is something others can check into... My cost out of pocket is $1500 for a class that costs $4500. Now $1500 for some may be hard to do, but school would allow payments on the 1500, I paid it all at one time since I had the means. Only other out of pocket was the the CDL physical and the cost @ DMV to get a learners permit. The balance of $3000 was paid by the state I live in (Virginia). The only obligation, I have to obtain the CDL licence, that's it. If for some reason I flunked out of class (impossible) or I quit before getting a CDL I would be responsible for another (1/3) $1500.
      Now one may say, they don't have the means to come up with $1500 and that's totally understandable. However, there is one guy in my class that told me the state picked up 100% of this tuition. His financial situation is different from mine. SO. checking with the state you live in to see if you can get a grant or even a loan is something I would do before going to a company run CDL school. The school will be looking to lock you in to make the money back plus some. The state figures if you are productive you will pay more taxes as a higher wage earner.

    • @nick22611

    Just think...... people used to complain about Swift. They were a whole lot better even 15 years ago. Today drivers are in demand, a whole lot more so than 15 years ago. Any driver, new or inexperienced, the money and conditions should be better than what I went through. This is due to the economy! For your information, today I drive for an LTL carrier. Right now, they will hire you with no experience. Previously, they wanted three years of driving experience which you normally did have to get over the road. Drivers are more in demand now then ever! The last thing that I will mention is that I recommend a state run/ public truck driving school. This is for several reasons! A company run truck driving school, would be my second choice!

      This is a reply to Wilheim X's question. Hello Wilheim.... I was a Certified II trainer at Swift Transportation. I drove for Swift a total of 6 years and trained a total of 3 years. My experience with new students was that in general, they struggled just with the driving aspect with the job if they came from these more private schools verses public institutions or company schools. I came to believe that with majority of these private schools, "Everyone passed". That's problematic for several reasons. I also questioned if the majority of these students who came from these private schools would have been better drivers coming from different schools. Yes, my job was to teach students how to become better drivers. However, in a very short time I had so many other aspects about the job, the company, the career and the life style to teach new students. If they struggled too badly with their driving skills, then they were really behind the eight ball. Often, they never completed training or they ended up going home for good immediately after training was over. Otherwise, they may not have been successful when they went solo on their own. That is both a waste of time and money for the students, as well as mental anguish.

    When I went through, it was twenty cents a mile. I took my written on Wednesday, the following Wednesday was the in cab test, Thursday road test, license on Friday. Monday trainer, instant team from day one, no fifty hours of supervision. Jumped ship a few weeks later, ran into the contract wall. Paid for my freedom with $5000. Which is what most would pay for CDL school. They had no autos then, but I still hear the grinding in my dreams! There were people who had never driven anything with a stick. Overheard a trainer talking to another about home time. He said "Yeah man I'm on my way home. I hope the rental has a GPS. because I'm not good with maps ......." I got my first map when I was 12, and I rode my bicycle all over that map! Four weeks in that dorm I couldn't do it again. Two weeks was boredom hell. Full grown men couldn't use the bathrooms and showers like adults. And you need $500 to $1000 pocket money to be comfortable, don't even think about their food. But there is unlimited free coffee! Mark, CRST is worst than state penitentaries (prisons); meaning, atleast in prison, you get 3 meals a day, two guys per cell, television might go off at 9; however, you can watch your own television( un- limited within your cell), a pay allowance is given ( commissary), until you start working within the prison, and as soon as you start working, you will get pay for every minute you work/worked , etc.; meaning, I thought we only become slaves, once a person gets convicted/ pleads guilty, and is sent to prison ( According to the Constitution).

      They are at most, the companies are just not paying it forward. I drive local out of a shipper who pays $50 per hour for any detention after 1 hr. Which is rare except Fridays. But I have talked to many drivers who said they received no detention pay when detained at my shipper. The trucking outfits are just keeping the money because they always bill it or have it in the rate conformation.

    My friend went to.their Cedar Rapids school. He said the food was NOT sufficient. A hotdog may be considered a meal. They had a shuttle that took students to Walmart once or twice a week. But students didn't have money, so many of them stole. I had to send him food his last week. Don't expect to be sufficiently fed.

    I have woeked for CRST . Any trucking company that offered trucking school is crap. It is the blind leading the blind, and now they are in need of trainers that all you need now is 6 monthes of drive time and yu can be a trainer, No winter driving and you can teach a new student how to drive. This is crazy. If you can try to get your CDL on your own and found a good company to work for , If not and you have to go through one of these companies make sure to ask a lot of questions, like does your trainer have winter driving experience. Good luck to all those looking to get in the trucking world.

You will be a more confident driver at the end of the course. They will take their time with you and answer your questions.They also helped me get a job at the end of the course. Going to a trucking company school is highway robbery avoid it.

    To be fair ... compared to Stevens they were great. When I was starting I was making 1500-1800 a week, once you get in a truck that is . For the record I would never go back . It was bad at the end where I was driving 4 days sitting 3 . But In 2016 it did not matter as I ran as a scolded dog. I missed Monday ... was driving . ;( I will say ... for a new training school not sure what companies are better . I guess the lesson is all starts suck ! Thanks for the info man !

    kinda curious what you think of PTL cause I currently work for them and I've never had a major problem with them YET. I am new, started with CRST in April, did my month training, trainer wanted to hire me on as a sub contractor n sell me his truck (he's 20 yr exp) but his wife talked him out of it. I went through school on the GI Bill so i wasn't under contract.
    Just FYI CRST DOES have a different school to be trained on a manual from day 1. It's out in Keenesburg, Co and it's called Careers Worldwide. Absolute amazing school. Instructors are cool as hell. Your week class is in houses, you share rooms, I had just 1 guy, others had 3. Very cool time there no limits on TV or anything.
    So I came to PTL. I just had a break down (clutch) and though i sat for 6 days (paid) and ended up having to go to a diff truck since that one was retiring in 2 months anyways everyone was real nice and cool about it and made all efforts to get me back down to my old truck to get the rest of my stuff (just got new truck today, not a bad wait)...
    Again, just curious what you think of them.

    • @BDSmithTrucking
      @BDSmithTrucking 5 лет назад +1

      @@TruckingAnswers well like I said, personally I have only been driving since March. Did 1 month with CRST so far my experience with PTL has been great. I haven't really had any issues with them other than sometimes the weekend FMs seem like that haven't got even the slightest clue.
      I took a big pay decrease coming here to PTL. CRST has a military pay program and started me at either 43 or 45 I can't remember.
      PTL I started at .38 but I'm making more money than I did with CRST.
      OVERALL I'd have to say PTL is about an 8 to 9 as far as what I expect. Again I could go in depth more about the reasons why but I've already written a lot. Haha
