So I made some iphone/tablet folding stands

  • The kids have these Amazon Kindle Fire tablets. Not a patch on an iPad, but during the periodic sales they’re about a tenth of the price.
The first thing I did was to mock up some ideas in SketchUp, they were okay but not really what I was looking for. I liked the idea of one based on a Viking Chair, but I wanted to make something smaller and that would fold away when not in use.
The idea I came up with is based on a plate holder I’ve seen in the past, only more rudimentary. So I started by making a cardboard tablet to get the measurements off and then a template to trial the idea.
    Seemed to work well.
It’s lockdown season so perfect time to use up some scrap wood and this small part of jointed pine furniture board seemed ideal and I started by sanding off the previous varnish that was on it. Starting with a 60 grit and working up to 220.
I thought I could use my rough cardboard template to draw the outlines but it turned out really rough. So I use that to work out the measurements and transfer those to a 2d drawing in Word - and print it out.
This turned out well because I could arrange the 6 pieces on the wood before gluing them down.
Following that I used my Aldi scroll saw to cut out the shapes as close to the lines as I could without going over. Just before the final cut it saw broke - I don’t mean the blade, it’s just not cutting. Perhaps a belt has slipped. But I carried on.
In order to make sure they were symmetrical I taped them together in their final pairs for the final sanding and shaping. Masking tape on one side, the template still on the other I superglued them in place.
At first I decided against the belt and disc sander because of the amount of dust it makes and my collection isn’t there yet.
…however after hand sanding for a short while I saw sense and fired it up.
Some incredibly hot work later I split open the matched pairs, numbered them on the bottoms to stop any confusion later and removed all the paper and tape left on them. And then did some final sanding.
Not the most ideal solution I’m sure but I wanted to match the colour of each stand to the colour of each child’s water bottle and decided to use some cheap kids poster paint.
The idea here is not to actually paint the wood as such, but to load up the surfaces with paint and after it’s sunk in a while wipe it off again. To stain the stands with the pigment in the paint.
I did this twice for good measure.
Again in the spirit of using things up, I applied a few coats of Chestnut Acrylic sanding sealer to protect the paint work. With some of their Acrylic lacquer over the top. I’ll see how it stands up to abuse.
At the start of this I considered attempting some fancy joinery to hold the two parts together, but for practicality I decided the better option would to attach the two pieces with some hinges. At this point a professional would probably inlay the hinge, but for me it went on the surface.
Using some squeeze clamps to hole the pieces in place I used superglue to hold the hinges in place so they would be already in their final positions for drilling and screwing in place.
As a final touch I decided they could use some rubber feet. In the past I needed two feet for a guitar pedal… so purchased about 50 and had plenty for this project.
And they turned out well… functional not pretty… but then the kids might destroy them 😊
    Thanks and goodbye

Hehe! It's amazing how quickly hand sanding gets old isn't it!
Nice little project and I guarantee they will last longer than the plastic ones. Nice work sir.

Nice simple solution and I like the idea of poster paint as a stain 👍

Nice design! Especially like how small they get when folded away. Will try my own version when I get the time!

Go for it! Don't need a lot of wood for it.

whoever breaks the stand, loses the tablet privileges. (don't try that for real, don't have kids myself but your life might turn into a continuous nightmare)

Cool, I'm checking that out right now. The dust they make really does put me off using it.

You are right about the dust but I love mine!
