I had a 2015 Ford Escape SE for almost 5 years. It died on me in mid March 2022. Now I drive a 2020 Ford Escape SE in black. It is so sharp in black. I do feel comfortable in a Ford Escape because of the size of the vehicle. I used to drive a 2005 Ford Focus ZX5 SES. When I was driving my 2015 one that I felt liked driving a Focus again. I just loved my 2020 Ford Escape.

I have the 2018 SEL FWD 1.5 and I love it. The 2020 is growing on me but we bought the Escape because it was a smaller SUV. A little bashing of the older platform but that’s ok. 2013-2019 just means the later models have some of the kinks worked out.

Dude seriously, wish you were at dealerships everywhere.... no one has the fortitude to show vehicles like this anymore.... all dealerships do is sell you a car your interested in, fake the pre inspections, give you a shitty car wash that puts scratches, swirl marks, and scuff marks all over a brand new Fing car, then sell it to you ripping you off.
Love the energy, motivation and emotional connection you have showing and selling your inventory..

*HUGE DISCLAIMER:* This only applies to vehicles that recommend premium (93/91) or midgrade (89), but require at least regular (87). This does *NOT* apply to any vehicle that requires premium, as using regular (87) in those engines will lead to very bad engine damage. I don't know of an engine that *requires* midgrade, but if you found one, then use at least midgrade in it, never regular as it could still lead to damage.
So with all ecoboost engines, the manual says 87, but all MPG and performance test are done with 91, and they just detune the engine to run on 87. Just like a 5.7 hemi can run on regular and a 6.2 ecotech can run on regular but recommend midgrade and premium respectively. If you run this thing on 87, you're feeding a forced induction engine very combustible gas. While its certified to run on it, even the manual says to immediately switch to high octane (91+) if you start getting knock. It also states that in hot weather or if you are actually putting the engine under load to switch to high octane. While computers can compensate somewhat for using lower octane gas, it still amazes me they get away with advertising these engines are 87 capable when they truly are not. This is coming from a guy who has seen multiple forced induction engines get damaged from 87 octane.
Okay say the little ecoboost scale similarly in fuel economy changes from reg to premium the same way the 3.5 in the f150 does. According to AAA (link below) the f150 gets 5% better fuel economy with premium. So lets take the 2020 with a 1.5 ecoboost awd. It gets a combined of 28 mpg. So this is tested with premium. Over 10k miles a year, on premium averaging 3.10 a gallon you would spend 1,107.1 in gas. Now in the test they got a 5% increase going from 87 to 93, so going reverse would mean 100/105x28 and you would get the epa rating for the same engine on regular gas. At 2.50 a gallon with 26.6 mpg, that would be 937.5 dollars. The difference in annual fuel cost would be 169.6 dollars and now you eliminate the risk of knock under load or in the heat.
Side note, I know fuel quality has nothing to do with octane rating, but most 87 fuels have higher ethanol blended in compared to 91+. So while the physical octane rating has nothing to do with carbon buildup, the higher octane fuels have less ethanol and more detergents to keep it clean, since high octane fuel goes into higher stressed engines, so the gas station companies mess around with it less.

I sold and traded in many Ecoboost Fords. I have not seen one that had engine damage because of lower grade fuel. Ford actually has a very advanced knock detection system that can advance or retard timing on per cylinder basis within one combustion cycle. Engine destroying knock usually happens for 2-3 seconds and that's very many predetonations.

8:00 Prop rods work fine, last a long time.
Everything wears out eventually. Struts last maybe somewhere between 3 to 10 years or so. Prop rods between, what, 30 years to forever? Anything Ford can do to improve reliability (and erase the image of "Fix Or Repair Daily") is fine with me. Not to mention the cost difference. Save the struts for Titanium Escapes, Edges, Lincolns, IMO.

Does the 2021 Escape driver seat sit the same height off the ground as the 2019 Escape driver seat? I'm not talking about clearance of the vehicle, I'm trying to make sure if I go with a 2021, that I'm not lower to the ground when driving. The 2020 and newer Escape's just resemble more of a car look and don't appear to sit up as high as the 2019 Escape.

We were looking for a new car and liked the Escapes. We looked at and test drove the 2020 and the 2019's. The 2020 was nice but we didn't like the front end, the center screen got washed out by the sun a few times and the engine lacked power going up a few hills. We ended up with a 2019 SEL Escape awd and have not been disappointed. Just a fyi.. We traded a 2016 Toyota Rav 4 on this. Ride, seating and handling so much better in the 19 Escape. Let's keep telling Ford they have to bring the new generation Focus and Fiesta hatchbacks. When it's time for me to buy my next car, it has to be a Manual Transmission or I ain't gonna buy it! For me, it's manual or nothing. And the Focus and Fiesta hatchbacks are my favorite cars. I still can't believe they decided not to bring the latest and greatest generations to the U.S. It's so sad.

      Raiti's Rides,
"... bring back the Focus ..."
I love the 2014 SE Sedan (manual trans + Sport Pkg) I bought new, but it does not surprise me that Ford gave up on trying to sell their cars in this market.
      - They really shot themselves in the foot (if not someplace worse) with that DCT fiasco.
      - So few people in the U.S. want manuals any more (ST & RS ='manual only, as they should be IMO).
      - Can't compete with Toyota on reliability, nor Toyota and Honda in so many areas ...
      - More and more buyers (my wife included) seem to want SUVs/Crossovers, NOT sedans, AND those tend to be more profitable.
Glad I got mine when I did, and I hope it outlasts me so I don't have to figure out what to replace it with. (Anything else on my short list today will cost at least twice as much as my Focus did.)

I liked your review because when you took each Escape on the road it gave a good indication of how each performs. Overall I have always liked the previous Escape and even the one before that. At this time there are many Escapes when the lease expires and some good deals on Certified Fords. I am starting to like the new generation but I do not know about having a 3 cylinder engine. I wonder how reliable that will be over the years. Additionally given the problems Ford had with its dual clutch transmission used in the now thankfully departed Fiesta & Focus how will that hold up.? I remember when my friend rented a Focus and I have to tell you that the transmission on that vehicle was awful. Coming form a Saturn SL 1 automatic with its infamous Saturn "slam' the transmission on the Focus was even worse. It still amazes me that Ford for all their vaunted engineering could not be bothered to design a transmission that worked properly & was just as bad as one in an 11 year Saturn

Know how you can tell a 2017 Escape S from a 2018 & 2019 Escape S? The 2017 has silver headlights while the 2018' and 2019's are black. The 2017 and 2018 came with a CD player while it was deleted from the 2019's.

My local dealer got a bunch of Escapes on the lot now. Was just there last night to get an oil change. They had a 2019 parked next to the 2020. Nether had a roof rack so I could get a good idea of the overall height. My biggest surprise is that they both looked the same (roof) height. I thought the whole idea was to make the new Escapes more car-like and I thought the new one would be lower. Or is it just the ride height is lower on the new model? The interior looks better in person (I could only look in the window). Overall, it looks better in person, but still vanilla-plain. The first thing people look at when buying a new car is the styling. Doesn't matter how good the mechanicals are, that is the first thing people look at. Don't understand why Ford played it so safe with the styling, compared to what Hyundai/Kia are doing for example.

@@RaitisRides The sales must be taking off. Just saw another on the road. That's 2 so far I've noticed in the past couple of days. I'm sure I missed some since I wasn't specifically looking for them. I think it is going to sell well, but right now I think some buyers are perhaps holding off, waiting for the baby Bronco to be released soon as it will have a more rugged look. If I hadn't just bought a new 2018 last year I'd probably be buying one of the 2020's. The Persian green is an odd color. Looks more like a blue than a green under most light conditions. It will be one of the most popular colors though, I'm guessing.

Great review (as they all are). Darn, now I'm favoring the 2020 but didn't want to pay new car prices. I do hate that infotainment center placement on the older Escapes though. And, as a short person, the A/C vents in the 2013-2019 Escape are too high -- they will not direct to just my body and not my face.

I've got the 2018 escape AWD 2.0t trend in Australia they pull hard off the mark at 250hp
does the new escape have gear paddles like the trend I have, only down fall is the fuel economy in the 2018
I don't like in the 2020 the info screen looks like all the other suvs (Kia) if only they could have it pop down or fold away out of view when not needed
